How many died -- civilians and soldiers -- during the war, which as it turns out is quite a lot. Poland lost 16% of it's population, and all the estimates used here are the lowest. All data from Wikipedia.

It's worth noting the irony in those casualty numbers listed by nation: 5.7 million of 11 million European Jews--well over 50%--are included in those numbers, but at that time, those nations didn't see or treat resident Jews as full citizens. 3 of the 5 million Polish deaths were Jews murdered by the Nazis. The Poles didn't acknowledge this after the war (nor do they have a stellar record of how they treated the few surviving Jews who tried to return and claim their property). They were anxious to claim them as evidence of how much they suffered (and they did, indeed, suffer), but that obscures how the Jews actually fared in Polish society generally when they were alive.

If Ukraine were independent at the time, it would have had the highest percentage of deaths per population.

Interesting list, and showing how USA came relatively unscathed out of the war in terms of percentage lost, despite its important contribution, whereas the Soviet Union suffered terribly. A pity the large number of romany deaths are rarely given attention.
