Capcom's History of Screwing Fans
We all played this one, you know what it's about.
8 playable characters. Sabin Kenobi's rating:
Added the 4 previously non-playable bosses to now be playable. Made it so you could fight two of the same characters (ie. Ryu v Ryu) against each other. Also had "updated graphics" and "redefined gameplay" if that really means anything.
Faster gameplay and a few new techniques. Some update... apparently this was only released in response to the bootleg copies of the Champion Edition that began circulating... seriously? Sweet! So the fans had the right idea back in the day: rather than let Capcom screw us by releasing a more "complete" version of Street Fighter II let's just bootleg it! Hooray!
Updated graphics and 4 new characters. Also apparently added new basic and special moves, as well as updated old ones.
Brought back the fast gameplay. Added "super combos" and also brought in Akuma as one new character.
I realize this is a collection of all previous Street Fighter II games but let me explain why it deserves to be on the list. It didn't simply port all the SFII games onto one disc, that at least would be understandable because we gamers like our classics. They modified the SFII Turbo to allow players to select characters from all five versions.
Updated to HD graphics and "rebalanced" gameplay. Also added new music by OverClocked ReMix which is actually pretty cool but not worth any kind of price tag.
Includes both Street Fighter III: New Generation and it's sequel Street Fighter III: Second Impact. Obviously not much needs to be said since it was two separate games and then they even sold it AGAIN packaged together. 2nd Impact only added 3 characters and "adjusted" gameplay from New Generation.
Added 5 new characters, big flipping deal.
The first of the EX games, weren't as popular and from what I've read are not considered part of the Street Fighter canon... like anyone can keep THAT straight with how many games they've made.
So the EX series almost doesn't make this list because Capcom might have actually made a valiant effort to make substantial changes in the subsequent sequels. However, EX2 added 7 characters but also excluded 6 from the previous game. It added guard breaks and excel combos.
Added several characters to the roster. Took out the guard breaks and put in surprise blow ability. Biggest feature was having 4-player battles with 2-2 tag teams.
Sabin Kenobi's rating:
Was a bit of a different spinoff than Marvel Vs Capcom series.
Added 4 new characters. Made "minor changes" to the gameplay. Added an "easy operation" system for beginners.
I hate to put one of my favorite series on this list but Capcom doesn't just screw their fighting game fans.
Sabin Kenobi's rating:
Added Vergil as a playable character. Added a previously omitted boss fight with Jester. Rebalanced the difficulty and improved gameplay and a turbo mode. Added a continue system and a survival mode with 9999 levels.
Sabin Kenobi's rating:
A serious reboot of the series; first of SF series on next-gen platform.
Sabin Kenobi's rating:
Added 10 new characters and 5 new stages. 4 new gameplay modes and "tweaked" re-balance of the gameplay.
Sabin Kenobi's rating:
Available as DLC to Super Street Fighter IV or you can buy it on a disc. All characters receive "tweaks" to re-balance, some get new super moves. Added 2 new characters.
A series previously immune to Capcom's greed. There had not been a re-release in MvC's history.
Sabin Kenobi's rating:
Unfortunately those of us who were optimistic that Capcom would stay true to the MvC history and it's word (look it up, Capcom promised all updates and new characters would be DLC) were wrong. Capcom tried to get sympathy and use the tsunami and earthquakes as an excuse for UMvC3 being on a disc instead of the previously planned DLC stating that because of the earthquakes and staff health issues they just figured it was easier to do a disc release than DLC. That's bull, how is printing and shipping a disc EASIER than doing something completely digital? Please don't buy their bull and don't buy this game, Capcom is scamming their customers more-so than ever with this title.
Ultimate MvC3 will feature rebalanced gameplay, 12 new characters, and one new game mode. Sabin Kenobi's rating:

The protagonist in the new Devil May Cry doesn't look right at all. Apparently Hideki Kamiya doesn't like him just like the fans.
I just don't understand why Capcom wouldn't let Keiji Inafune complete Mega Man Legends 3.
And I'm really, really confused as to why you're so upset about Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 not being DLC. I, myself, would much rather have a physical copy of the game and the new content than have to buy DLC for it. What they're doing is what basically every "Game of the Year Edition" that's come down the pike for the last few years has done. Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits games these days are $30. The downloadable content for the game would likely be totaled at more than $20 or so if you got it all (I'm guessing. Too lazy to look, but that seems to be about the average for most games). Capcom's re-releasing the game at $40, which is probably cheaper for new fans than if they re-released it as a Greatest Hits game and had people download all the DLC on top of it. And I'm not sure why you felt the need to give the game one star when you haven't played it -- it's not out yet...
Considering your love for Final Fantasy, I'm curious on your stance of Square-Enix re-releasing games from that series constantly (including the re-release of FFX coming up) with only minor additions to each one. Isn't that screwing over fans of the series, too? And Square-Enix likes to hike their prices on these remakes up from time to time, too. Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II on the PSP come to mind in that regard.
Not trying to bash you or start an argument or anything...Just trying to figure out your stance, 'cause I don't really understand your logic here much at all. Again, no offense is intended...Just looking for more detail as to why you feel the way you do about this.
First of all, 12 characters (most of which suck) and 1 game mode is NOT worth $40, $20 as a download would be better but still pushing it with me. Which brings me to my next point: Capcom PROMISED that all additions to MvC3 would be in DLC format. They went back on this which is even more upsetting since they said they wouldn't. So that kind of betrayal really makes this sting. Thirdly is that if I've already dropped $70 bucks on this game for the Special Edition, I don't want to spend ANOTHER $40 ($110, plus tax where I'm at is like $120) for BASICALLY the same game. Not to mention that Capcom has basically admitted that the game was not finished, there were glitches and problems, and there are unfinished characters on the disc. Welcome to $60-70 beta testing for Capcom. The fact that it's coming out only 8 months after the first one is also a clue of the fact that they KNEW what they were doing. You CANNOT release a game, get enough feedback about what's wrong with it, FIX it on a "new" engine, finalize it, and get it packed and shipped (all those discs and cases have to be made you know) in 8 months. I've worked in the gaming industry doing testing and I can tell you that's total bull. They planned this re-release before the first even came out because they knew it would make them more money.
Minor re-balances could be done through a downloadable update, characters could be sold individually or in packs as DLC, game modes should be added for free. Think I'm asking too much of a game company? Go see what EPIC games did for Unreal Tournament III on the Ps3 version (not Xbox or PC) they gave a HUGE update for FREE.
Personally for me, Cacpcom was easily my favorite gaming company when I was a kid with megaman and they always did Disney games like Ducktales and Darkwing Duck. Now, they couldn't really piss me off more. Between UMvC3 and DMC being outsourced to Ninja Theory who is royally screwing it up I am 100% done buying Capcom games. I've already sold my copy of MvC3, it wasn't that good anyway and I have MvC2 downloaded on my Ps3, that's all I need.
As for FF games with updates I actually don't know what you're talking about beyond the GBA version of FFVI having an extra dungeon. And I bought that moreso because it's FFVI that's portable and I can take it on the go, that's more of a selling point, I actually haven't even done the extra dungeon in that I'm so lazy! The only "re" releases of FF games I've bought are that and FFIX on the PSN for the same reason, I can put it on my PSP and play on the go.
And I think you're being cynical saying that they had planned this re-release in advance. Many Greatest Hits titles come out 8-12 months after release, so perhaps they planned a greatest hits re-release like they did with Devil May Cry 3, which isn't a rip-off, but they actually took the time to make some improvements and add new stuff to the game before they shipped it out again at the $20 price tag. Will that cause some folks who played the original get upset 'cause they want to buy the new one? Probably. But in the process, they're creating an opportunity to bring in completely new fans and potentially widen their fan base.
Square-Enix re-releases a TON of their Final Fantasy games, particularly 1-6. Most folks don't think of this as a bad thing, they look at it as fan service. People liked the game, so they re-released it with a new dungeon added in, or with some FMV movies blended in, or with updated graphics. I've never heard anyone show this much frustration towards Square for putting out Final Fantasy IV on PSP, when they've already bought the Super NES, GBA, and DS versions. I usually just see folks shrug their shoulders and say something along the lines of, "That has some extra stuff in it, but I've already got three versions, I don't need a fourth."
Every game company out there is money-hungry. They have to be in order to stay alive in the video game market. They key is balancing the focus of making a profit and making fans happy...And while you may not like 'em, Capcom is actually a company that listens to the fans of their product a large percentage of the time. They'll never make a decision that everyone loves, but nobody can or ever will. There will always be at least a few folks unhappy with a direction that any company takes. But when you look at a company like SquareEnix, they have had fans begging for nearly a decade for both a new Chrono game and for a PS3 remake of Final Fantasy VII, games that they own the licenses for and can make at any time, but for some reason or another, refuse to do so...And then at Capcom, fans were begging for a new Marvel vs. Capcom game after second one...And they had to go out and acquire licenses that they didn't, and still don't own, which ultimately lowers the profits they make from that game...It probably took a lot of time and effort at the negotiating table to get the rights to use Marvel characters, and as a result of the deal, a percentage of the profit is going to Marvel, not Capcom. This game is not a big money-maker for Capcom unless they sell a TON of the product (or unless they somehow got a really good contract with Marvel for that game). It was more of a fan-service that they were hoping they'd be able to at least gain a little profit from rather than lose money on...At least, that's how it looks like to me.
I guess there's a fine line between what some folks consider to be fan service and what some folks consider to be a rip-off. Neither of us really have any insight as to what goes on in the Capcom meetings (A game tester is an outside contracted worker...they're not told a whole lot of anything. I have friends that work at Microsoft and Nintendo both as game testers and higher up...You'd be amazed had the differences in their knowledge of the goings-on in the companies between the two job titles) but we're basing our arguments on what we see in their releases. Capcom usually (but not always) stays on the fan service side of things, from my point of view...But, that's just my point of view. Doesn't mean I'm right. :)
And sorry for the long rant, sir. Sometimes I get a bit long-winded.
I suppose you're right though, it is a fine line between fan service and disservice. Personally I see UMvC3 as a serious disservice; if you see it differently then be my guest to buy it but just know they'll have another version out in the next 6-18 months that you will have to pay at least another $20 bucks for.
Marvel vs. Capcom 3 = $30 right now.
DLC that has come out since the original release that will be included in this game = $24
The estimated cost of all those characters and new game mode if it was DLC = $20-25
That's about $74-79 right there. It's coming out at $40...And you don't see the value?
Plus, you said you sold your copy...Which means to play the DLC, you'd have to buy the game again anyway. This would save you, and folks like you who sold their copy but wanted to play the new content money. It's almost half price, actually.
They've already released $24 worth of DLC, so I don't see much to complain about as far as them promising to release DLC for the game. Also, for right now, releasing downloadable content for a game nearly a year old would probably be a bad business move...Think of how many people have played the game and moved on already. You, yourself said you had already sold your copy. What's the point of releasing DLC if nobody is playing the game to buy it? If they had made all the DLC already, but thought that it'd all go to waste, the logical move would be to put it on a disk in a glorified "greatest hits" bundle. That way new folks and returning fans that got rid of their copy can jump in at nearly half the price.
This'll be my last response, 'cause I don't want to beat a dead horse, but every company makes decisions for a reason. Money is definitely a factor, but if it wasn't, the company wouldn't be around very long, would it? The important thing is fan service...And you might complain that they didn't make it DLC or whatever, but the fact is that for you, or anyone else, who liked the game and wanted more, they're giving you more at a fraction of the cost if you were to buy it all again. Complaining about the format that it's given (especially when it all adds up to be cheaper -- and it'll be a physical copy that you can keep forever instead of data that you'll lose in ten years when the next-gen consoles are out and all of this gen's DLC is deleted off of the store servers) is something I'll really never understand.
Here is my math that IS fact:
Marvel Vs Capcom 3 day of release: $60 ($70 for us suckers who bought the SE)
DLC 2 characters, shadow modes (which suck btw), and everything else: $24
ULTIMATE Marvel Vs Capcom 3: $40
TOTAL: $124 (plus tax)
END FACTS.
That's a lot of money for not a lot of product. But there I go again valuing what I think something is worth. I could go on, I can be as long winded as you Ape, if not longer ;) but I'll end with that because that's how it is for us losers who bought the game on release day. Yes, those who didn't buy it until recently for only $30 or didn't buy it at all, I'm sure it'll be a great day and great deal to get UMvC3 for only $40 but I just wanted to give the perspective of someone who bought it day 1.
Mega Man X6 (PS1)
Keiji Inafune intended the X series to end with X5. It really should have. X6 reeks of being rushed, money grubbing garbage; it was made in a mere six months and was localized in a mere week (the VA is still in Japanese) to make it out in time for the 01' holiday season. Additionally, the story really adds nothing to the series overarching narrative.
Mega Man X7 (PS2)
X6 was a mess and they thought making it 3D would fix everything/anything? I couldn't imagine playing $50 for this.
Mega Man X8 (PS2)
Okay, so the game is decent but why would you end a game this late in the franchise on a cliffhanger? Thank you for that one Capcom.
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (PSP)
The Day of Sigma video is cool (although that could have been released as an anime I would have bought it even sooner) but the fact is this game didn't need to be remade. Thank GOD it didn't sell as well as they hoped; the last thing we needed was the whole freaking series to be remade. I love Mega Man/Mega Man X but enough is enough!
Mega Man Legends 3 (NDS)
I shouldn't have to explain this one... but I honestly feel it's partly Nintendo's fault for the bungled 3DS launch.
