Well then, you'll be waiting a long time my friend because these films have a hefty gap before the next installment!

Enjoy the long wait!

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks to a suggestion by MissWis; I've also added films with the least amount of time between sequels.

Parameters

- - The gap for longest must be at least 15 years.
- - The gap for shortest must be less than 8 months.
- - Forget about Direct-to-Video/DVD!
- - Don't even bother with suggesting remakes or reboots.

Rocky Balboa (2006)?

Great list! :P
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 17 14:04
Thanks Kris.

I'm afraid Capone Rising counts as a prequel and is not eligible for this list.
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 17 14:20
Ah... Sorry!

What about John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981) and Escape from L.A. (1996)?
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 17 16:06
Thanks again Kris. Good spot.
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 17 16:47
But wouldn't you say that Star Wars Episode III is sort of a prequel to Episode 4 (Even though it goes years in the story/plot)?
Then "The Untouchables" would be -23 years :P
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 17 16:50
It was a joke. It won't happen again. :-)

MacGyver (2011)

Can I also suggest 21 Jump Street (2012)? It was a TV-Show back in 1987 Which stretched over 5 seasons: 1987-1991...
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 18 2:31
Awesome list.

You could also go the opposite way, and figure out the shortest time between sequels, like with the Matrix 2 and 3, and the Kill Bill movies. Could be cool.
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 18 10:22
MissWis: That would be cool! :P

Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)
Posted: 3 years, 7 months ago at Nov 18 16:28
Yeah, less than a year at least. Say 8 months or so?

Its bog standard for a sequel to come out a year-to-two later. Look at Lord of the Rings and the Saw franchise for example.

Ahh... okey, then i now the limit :P

Awesome idea!

How about some other large sequel gaps for upcoming films:
Beverly Hills Cop III & IV (2012) - 18 year gap
Ghostbusters II & III (2012) - 23 year gap

Plus, if Mel Brooks EVER makes a "History of the World: Part II" that would certainly make the list, haha.

AND if George Lucas makes "Episode VII: The Fallen Hero", which he says he wont (but we all know he's lied about type of thing before), but it's expected to be released in 2017 - that would be a 34 year gap!
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Feb 25 6:08
All perfect candidates but they need to at least have a poster or be in pre-production. Otherwise I could put any would be sequel on here.

Thanks for the vote.

LOL the starwars thing made me laugh. Bravo!

We mustn't forget that many of these sequels are absolutely horrible.
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Mar 1 20:27
When its confirmed it'll be added.
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Mar 16 7:18
A few possible additions:
There's a 34 year gap between The Maltese Falcon and The Black Bird.
A 33 year gap between National Velvet and International Velvet.
A 16 year gap between 2001: A Space Odyssey and 2010.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 12 18:26
Also, 30 year gap between Scenes from a Marriage (1973) and Saraband (2003).
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 12 18:32
Just thought of another: 27 years between The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) and The 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse (1960)
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 12 18:42
...and for the shortest time between releases there are The Tiger of Eschnapur and The Indian Tomb, released 1.5 months away from each other in 1959.
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 12 19:25
Clerks (-06) ?
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 12 19:37
Sorry about the spamming, but if you're willing to consider adding Disney sequels here (yuck), then there's Bambi (1942) and Bambi 2 (2006) with a whopping 64 year gap :P
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 13 11:25
Wow, didn't expect there to be such a gap between the Godfather Part II and the Godfather Part III

Amazing list
Posted: 2 years, 8 months ago at Oct 15 11:12
I know you are getting a swarm of suggestions; but there are a few more I would like to see on here:
Odd Couple and Odd Couple II - 31 years.
Superman II and Superman Returns - 26 years
Predator and Predators (predator 2 doesnt count) - 23 years

Does Peter Pan and Hook qualify? if so, that's about 38 years. There's also a 24 year gap between Slap Shot and Slat Shop 2, though I think that one went straight to DVD.

There's also 34 years between these two:

and its by the same director too ;)

Also, The Limey (1999) can be viewed as sequel to Poor Cow (1967), as the film has flashback footage to scenes from Poor Cow.

The Wachowski brothers were hoping to make a sequel to the Speed Racer movie, however, the movie did not make enough money at the box office to justify a sequel. Unfortunate, as the movie was quite good, actually.

the lesson from this list is, careful what you wish for.
