UPDATING EACH DAY./WORK STILL IN PROGRESS

With a lot of help from this Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_remakes, I've decided to try and list and rank every remake that I've seen. List is ranked in a best to worst order. So best remake on top, worst on bottom. You know the deal.

Be aware that there's been a while since I've seen some of these films, so my notes might be a bit lacking. But I do hope that the overall content of this list will make up for some holes.

The Remake
Been some years since I saw it, but I honestly, absolutely loved it when I saw it the first time around, and considered it to be one of the best films I've ever seen. And I still think it's a tremendous achievement on so many levels. Storytelling, visuals, directing and acting. It's a masterpiece.

vs.

The Original
Not seen it yet.

Remake of: Yôjinbô

The Remake
A Clint Eastwood classic. A western classic. The film that really launched Eastwood's career, and spawned the way for what's now known as "The Man with No Name"-trilogy. This remake of an Akira Kurosawa film is an exceptionally well-made and extremely entertaining spaghetti western.

vs.

Insomnia (2002)
Remake of: Insomnia

The Remake
Christopher Nolan's remake to the Norwegian film is an excellent example of how to do a remake. By taking everything that was good in the original, keep it, improve it and add your own touch to it. That's exactly what Nolan has done to Insomnia, which is a criminally underrated film.

Benefiting from a surprisingly chilling performance from Robin Williams, Insomnia is an atmospheric thriller that does a very good job in exploring the characters psychology.

vs.

The Original
The original is one of the few good Norwegian films that I've seen. As with the remake, it's an atmospheric thriller that benefits from its great use of North Norwegian landscape, and an exceptional performance from Stellan Skarsgård.

It's in terms a more haunting film than the remake, but slightly inferior to it because it doesn't have that Nolan touch on it. If that makes any sense whatsoever.

Remake of: The Hills Have Eyes

The Remake
This is a film that worked surprisingly well for me. Mainly because it worked more on an action thrill-ride than as an actual horror film. But I found to be extremely entertaining and kick-ass.

And one of the greatest assets of this film is that it's actually emotionally engaging. It's very easy to sympathize with the lead character. You want him to succeed. You want him to live. You want him to get his family out of there alive. That's something that rarely happens in films like this, and when it does, it ought to be celebrated.

vs.

The Original

Heat (1995)
Remake of: L.A. Takedown

The Remake
Heat is an excellent epic crime drama. A carefully and skilfully constructed cat-and-mouse game between two of the finest actors in the history of cinema, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Heat is just so damned well-made.

The action in it is terrific. The performances are outstanding and the dialogue in this film feels extremely authentic. Heat is an excellent film made from an excellent script, with almost every key ingredient in place to make it as good as it is.

vs.

The Original
I've rad that Michael Mann disowned this film, seeing as the studio went in and edited it down for TV, or something. So not that likely to check it out.

Evil Dead (2013)
Remake of: The Evil Dead

The Remake
Some people are likely to dismiss this film just because it happens to be a remake of a very much loved horror film. Well, those people need to get their stick out of their ass. This 2013 update of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead might lack some of the comedy that the original had, but it makes up for that by delivering a true gorefest that pleased me highly.

Evil Dead is just bloody entertaining, suitably scary and very thrilling. It takes us on a roller-coaster ride of blood and gore, and shows us what horror films are really capable of once they decide to just don't give a fuck.

vs.

The Original
While it's really Evil Dead 2 that's considered to be the "real" horror/comedy out of the Evil Dead-films, the original does have something truly humours about it, despite it actually going for true horror. And that's why it's so great and charming.

It's a completely different film than the remake, which is why I can enjoy them both equally well. Their funny, but in their unique way.

Remake of: Pour elle

The Remake
I really like this film for one simple reason. The performance from Russell Crowe and the fact that I get so much sympathy for him. He plays such a sympathizing character, that I'm able to easily suspend by disbelief for the far-fetched plot and just go with it. I'm really engaged in the film, and I really want him to succeed with what he's doing. Once a film has managed to pull that off, I'm sold.

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
Remake of: 3:10 to Yuma

The Remake
This is a darned good western. Outstandingly entertaining with equally outstanding action scenes that are fuelled by some excellent performances from Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. A good western with two of my favourite actors in is like a dream that's been realized.

This is a great film because it's more about the characters, rather than the actual action itself. The action serve as a necessary solution for the characters, causing the viewer to be more emotionally engaged in the scenes. And when you're emotionally engaged in what's happening on the screen, the film has won.

vs.

The Original
I've not seen the original yet. But it's by many people considered a western classic, and the overall rating of it is high enough for me to consider a watch some day.

Fright Night (2011)
Remake of: Fright Night

The Remake
I've not seen the original, so I can't really compare them or anything like that, but based on what I've seen in this remake, I would say that one shouldn't dismiss a remake immediately. This was an extremely fun and well-crafted film. A true blast.

It's smart, stylish, funny and it does occasionally manage to handle suspense quite well. Lead by a number of good performances, particularly from Colin Farrell (who I usually don't like) and David Tennant, this is the kind of vampire film they should make more of.

vs.

The Original
Like I said, I haven't seen it. But if it's equally entertaining as its remake, I'll see pretty soon.

Cape Fear (1991)
Remake of: Cape Fear

The Remake
Whenever great director decides to do remakes, people usually moan about them not doing something original instead. And while that might have been better, the result of great directors doing remakes is often surprisingly well. That's the case with Cape Fear. One of many Scorcese/De Niro collaborations.

It might lack a bit for it to be as great as other collaborations of those two, but on its own, this is a very exciting thriller with an astonishingly good performance from De Niro. Dark, gritty and possibly provoking. This is a film that holds nothing back, and is only let down by a ending that doesn't hold the same quality as the rest of the film

vs.

The Original

The Departed (2006)
Remake of: Mou gaan dou

The Remake
I don't think I'm the only one who think that the only director who could have completely nailed this film was Martin Scorcese, and he certainly did manage to create a very good remake. The film that finally gave him his Oscar.

Now, it's not as good as many of Scorcese's other efforts, but that says more about the quality of what he does, rather than the quality of this film. It's cleverly scripted, wonderfully acted and entertaining throughout its entire running time.

vs.

The Original
But even if The Departed is an excellent remake, the original is still the better film, in my humble opinion. I just find it to be slightly more thrilling.

The Remake
Peter Jackson is the right man for big, epic action films and he completely nailed this 2005 update of King Kong. Tremendous action scenes, terrific special effectd and solid performances are all central things in a film that's only brought down a level because it's a bit overlong.

The Remake
Don't think anyone was more suited for this material than David Cronenberg. The man seems to be completely fucked up in his head, and at times, that's exactly what this film feels like. It's utterly bizarre, but still tremendously fascinating.

It's also emotionally engaging, because Cronenberg doesn't dismiss the human element of this film. Instead of just going for weird horror, he perfectly captivates the romance in this film. Adding a whole new layer.

The Mummy (1999)
Remake of: The Mummy

The Remake
A more modern Universal horror film, and not really a true horror film. The remake of The Mummy is basically a display in special effects and a ludicrously over-the-top action film. But what an entertaining action film it is! It's a film that, probably, could be ripped apart, but it's a true guilty pleasure of mine.

It's also a film I have a nostalgic feel towards. It's a feel I saw a lot when I was much younger and dumber and I've always enjoyed it for what it is. A fast-paces roller coaster ride with plenty of action. It might be slightly outdated now, but then again, so are most films on this list.

vs.

The Original
Without doing any particular research on it, I do believe that this film had a higher budget than many of the other Universal Horror films that came out around this year. Because it's a film that's technically strong for its time, and the sets and costumes are brilliant. It's also a film that's loads of fun to begin with, even if it's a bit similar to Dracula.

But it does eventually start testing my patience and the end is a huge anti-climax that doesn't exactly reward my patience. But mummies are enjoyable and Boris Karloff is wonderful as a mummy.

The remake of The Karate Kid, that probably should have been titled The Kung Fu Kid, is a surprisingly good film. Featuring good performances, particularly from Jackie Chan, beautiful cinematography and real emotions, The Karate Kid is quite good.

vs.

The Original
I might be spitting in the church here, but I like the remake better. The performance from Pat Morita is excellent, but I don't think that the film has the same amount of heart and emotion, that the remake surprisingly managed to capture. I might be a bit fucked up here.

Piranha 3D (2010)
Remake of: Piranha

The Remake
One of those instances where the remake is much better than the original. The premise is utterly stupid and trashy, and the people involved knows that. So how do they make this good? By making it as trashy as possible.

It's basically just an orgy of blood, gore, nudity, tits and piranhas. And it's a hell of a lot of fun.

vs.

The Original
Unquestionably spawned by the success of Jaws, but while it certainly borrows things from Steven Spielberg's masterpiece, Piranha is a completely different film. That's just not as successful. It just doesn't take off. There are moments here that could have been really great if they were to be taken some steps further, but there's some restraint in this film that drags it down.

It basically should have been trashier and more hilarious. It's amusing at times, but not often enough for me to fully appreciate this film. It should have gone full out with more deaths, gore and nudity. Things we want to see in a film like this. But hey, that's why we have the Alexandre Aja remake.

The Remake
This is a refreshing zombie film, despite being a remake. People might say that slow walking zombies are scarier, but I would argue with that and say that it's scarier when the actual zombie is faster than you. Slow walking zombies is more of a comedy thing.

So, Zack Snyder provides a film that's quite unusual when compared to everything he's directed, but it's an effectively entertaining zombie film that he's dished up and among his finest work.

RoboCop (2014)
Remake of: Robocop

The Remake
Many people are likely to completely dismiss or hate this remake of the Paul Verhoeven classic. Many people are going to disagree with me on this, but that close-mindedness is a bit foolish. This 2014 version of Robocop is how a remake should be done. It does keep the basic premise of the original, and sends it in a completely different direction with its own ideas. The original is certainly more humours, satirical and better, but this is a very different Robocop and it works rather well as it is.

The first half of the film is very interesting. The training of Robocop, and how they're creating him is actually very competently made. And it sets up for some solid commentary. The aspect of a corporation trying to market Robocop and robots is quite fascinating. There are also some emotional moments that works quite as well. The action is also solid. And it's refreshing to see an action film that manages to avoid pumping in many unnecessary action scenes. So the action does never get tiresome, and it's very slickly made. I see a lot of people typing angrily on their keyboards because of the PG-13 rating, but the truth is, this version of Robocop didn't need the R rating. And the reason for that is quite simply because it's a very different film.

The sad truth is however that no matter how good this remake is, and it's quite good, many fans of the original are blindly going to hate it. So the film doesn't really stand a chance against those people, and many of them are likely to overlook the qualities in this film. But, with an open mind, I don't see why you shouldn't find the new Robocop entertaining.

vs.

The Original
The original is quite simply a more exaggerated film. It's much more satirical, and more comedic. Which is why its ridiculous over-the-top violence works so well. It's a pure action comedy, and it works brilliantly as just that.

The Remake
This remake is a bit slow to begin with. Not particularly interesting durin its opening minutes, but once the real drama starts, it ends up being a quite intriguing film with some compelling drama.

The film is fuelled by some terrific performances from its three leading roles, and particularly by Natalie Portman (who's very hot in this film) and Jake Gyllenhaal, who also have some great chemistry between each other. This is a film that requires great acting to work, and luckily, it does have that.

This remake is a pure blast of trashy entertainment. Nudity, imaginative kills and plenty of gore. Everything I need in a film like this. Extremely underrated. Extremely funny. I do wish that I had seen it in 3D, so that I would have gotten the cheesy 3D effects, as well.

vs.

The Original
The problem I have with the original My Bloody Valentine is that it feels surprisingly free of gore and blood effects. For an early 80's B-horror/slasher film with the premise of a valentine's day killer, it's surprisingly non-violent. Which was a bit of a turn-off for me.

vs.

The Original
The first time I saw it, I didn't care for it at all. After having seen it again now, I find myself appreciating it a lot more, even if I'm not too convinced of it. It's a film that I like more for what it did to horror as a genre, rather than as its own film.

It does have some great moments of horror, though. Like the first encounter with Leatherface and the chase scene towards the end. Those are two genuinely frightening scenes. And I do like the really gritty feel of the film, much thanks to some documentary style camera-work.

But I do feel that it drags on to long in many scenes, causing those scenes to feel more comedic than terrifying. For a film that's as short as this, that's a major flaw.

The Remake
Highly underrated horror film! While I haven't seen the original Korean film, but I honestly enjoyed this one. Alexandre Aja is proving himself to be a highly capable horror director, seeing as he also directed the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, which is another pleasure of mine. He does manage do create enough suspense, and mystery around the plot. Creating a surprisingly entertaining film, with some cool death scenes. Kiefer Sutherland does a great job, and it's quite easy to sympathize with him.

It does have flaws, of course. The backstory is the major one. It's pure and simple not good enough, and that leads it up to a somewhat disappointing ending. (The final scene is really effective, though.) Yet, this was a pleasant surprise.

Halloween (2007)
Remake of: Halloween

The Remake
Making this remake a better film than John Carpenter's classic was an impossible task, so director, Rob Zombie, did the only thing that was right. He added his own touch on it by delving into the psychological mind of Michael Myers. Which worked all right. But its nonetheless the gory rampage of the second half that works best. Simply because it's entertaining.

It's never scary or atmospheric. But as an alternative, more action-oriented version to the original, it works fine.

vs.

The Original
John Carpenter's classic is a traditional example of how often "less is more" in order to create suspense or horror. Halloween might, today, never be truly frighting, but it's easily a successful and suspenseful slasher film. Carpenter does know how to use his iconic villain, in the fact that we always sees him lurking around and the combination with his iconic musical score is a winning formula for this film.

So, Halloween is never scary, but it's a really good example of how to create a moody, atmospheric and suspenseful horror film. It's also a perfect film to see at Halloween, and is easily superior to its remake.

The Remake
Only remember it being decent enough.

vs.

The Original
I've not seen it. Which is odd, as it's a Wes Craven film. But this film is actually a loose remake itself, of a Swedish Bergman film.

Maniac (2012)
Remake of: Maniac

The Remake
Never seen the original, but there were a lot of intriguing and good things in this horror remake. The most obvious thing is that basically the whole film is shot from Elijah Wood's POV. Which is a nice little gimmick that's handled perfectly, and creates suspense in a whole different way. The first 40 minutes of this film is exceptionally well-done.

But the film starts to struggle when it tries to go into the maniac's past, trying to provide some sort of explanation for why he's doing the things he's doing. It feels unnecessary and drags me out of the films. Particularly as those scenes feels just like an excuse to show some graphic sex. I do also believe that things turns overly comical towards the end, and that it doesn't match up with the overall tone the beginning of the film had.

The Original
Have not seen it.

Remake of: Friday the 13th

The Remake
I seem to be in the minority of it, but I actually liked this remake (possibly more of a reboot?) a lot. I even consider it to be possibly the best film in the franchise (not that's too hard).

What I liked about it was that it was just gory, trashy and entertaining horror film with several nice kills and nudity. It knew it was trash and played along on it. When a film does that successfully, then I'm willing to swallow it whole.

vs.

The Original
The original Friday the 13th is a bit duller. The reason for that is very simple. Jason is not the killer. But his mom is. While that probably works as a decent twist, it makes the film less enjoyable for me.

But there are enough moments of good, old-fashioned slasher-horror here to pass the time nicely.

Remake of: Fingers

The Remake
This French remake is in my eyes divided into two separate stories, that certainly connects with each other, but only one of those parts are really interesting in my opinion. And that's his relationship with his piano teacher. The other part just comes across as your typical gritty-crime-drama, and is not as interesting for me. All though seeing as how that part of his life affected him and his piano playing was neat.

The ending is also leaves a rather bad taste in my mouth, as I feel that none of the parts really sum up to anything satisfactory. But this is a visually great looking film with terrific performances, and some excellent music. Worth a watch.

Remake of: A Nightmare on Elm Street

The Remake
The remake is solid. Jackie Earle Haley delivers a very good performance as Freddy Krueger, and seeing as Robert Englund didn't reprise his role, I would say that this is the best thing we could get with this film. It plays a bit darker than the original, and the many sequels. Playing a lot on dark humour, which very often worked on me. It's one of the better films in this franchise, but it's simply solid.

vs.

The Original
The original is not only one of my favourite horror films of all time, it's one of my favourite films in general. In horror terms, it's absolute perfection. Occasionally scary, sinister, menacing and funny, but always bloody entertaining with unique kills and plenty of gore and blood. Robert Englund's iconic performance as the arguably greatest horror villain ever, Freddy Krueger, is just the icing on the cake.

The Remake
The problem that I remember having with the remake is that I found it to be quite similar to the original. Sharing the same strengths and weaknesses.

Was never blown away with when I saw it, and I barely remember anything from it. I can imagine that it will improve upon a re-watch.

The Thing (1982)
Remake of: The Thing from Another World

The Remake
I've always enjoyed the fear, paranoia and isolation that's present in The Thing, as well as its practical effects. But I guess I'm in the minority of thinking that it's overlong and at times rather dull.

I do like the Norwegian the beginning, seeing as I understand his very broken attempt at shouting in Norwegian. It's amusing.

The Original

Predictable, and somewhat silly. But Jason Statham and Ben Foster is a cool duo, and this is without doubt an entertaining film. It is a Statham film, and you know what you're going to get.

Awesome job!! Awesome presentation!

Will be even better once you're able to gradually fill in some of those question marks.

I like what you've done here, man. And as the astute observer pointed out before me, this list will look even better with the blanks filled in.

Personally I prefer all of Romero's films over their remakes. The originals of Amityville Horror, Cape Fear, Fright Night, Yojimbo, Death Race 2000, and Clash of the Titans are all well worth watching too regardless of whatever their ratings are.

Thanks for such kind words. This list has so far (still much more to be added) made me realize that I've missed a lot of good films, so I'll certainly get rid of as many of those blanks as possible.

This is a great list, but I don't get why you've added a few of these movies if you have no plans on seeing the original.
Posted: 2 years, 10 months ago at Jan 7 7:24
Time and again, originals are better than remakes. Hollywood has a history of ruining international films with remakes. Yojimbo, King Kong, The Italian Job Sleuth, Day of the Jackal are worth seeing. Wings of Desire too but it won't suit everyone.

Even if I haven't planned on seeing some of them, I could still end up doing so. Besides, this is mostly just a list ranking remakes.

Great job on this list.

I would recommend watching the original the Mechanic. It is better than the remake.
