@ Blu-ray

What I have left after seeing this film is that it had some rather good ideas and that it was slightly macabre in its own way. There is also no denying that it's quite original compared to many other horror films, still, originality ain't everything you need to make a good film.

I do appreciate a film that doesn't spoon feed you with the answers to every questions it raises and I'm fond of films that'll let you interpret them as you'll like. But this was just too much for me. It completely lost me during its last half. There might be some artistic value and odd meaning here, but when everything suddenly turned crazy and weird, unexplainable things happened, I stopped caring. Might be better if you can figure out what the heck is going on.

"We've gotta find some proof that Madeline O'Malley really exists before this place closes down."

@ Blu-ray

A slow burn horror film with an ending that truly pay offs and made me go get my own asthma inhaler. While I didn't particularly care for Ti West's The House of the Devil, I found myself enjoying this film a lot. It's a carefully paced and calculated film that rewards ones patience with one of the most intense and terrifying climaxes I've seen in a horror film.

One of its best strengths lies however in its characters, who actually feel like they're real people. And while it might not happen a lot during the first hour, watching these people talking to each other is entertaining enough. Some scenes might be a bit unnecessary, but my overall impression is that this is a rock solid horror film with a delightful setup to a scary finale.

"Monsters are cowards. You stand up to them, they run away."

@ Blu-ray

It starts off promising, establishing a well-suited atmosphere and some really nice cinematography. I also found the premise to be rather interesting, as I liked the idea of this 'Hollow Man'.

But, the dual story with the Spanish boy, mother and priest eventually turns into too much of an distraction from what eventually becomes the main story, with Clive Owen. And the several twists and turns are generic, dire and predictable, making this a film that could have have been much more.

"You know what they do to horses that can't be tamed, Johnny? They geld them."

@ Blu-ray

The remake of I Spit on Your Grave can be separated into to similar halves. The first half is about a bunch of locals torturing and raping this girl, while the other half is about said girl getting her revenge. What we have here is therefore a film that never changes its setting during the entire running time. It's nearly two hours of torture, rape and sadistic violence, without any hint of a plot or story.

For me, it did get too much eventually. Not necessarily because I thought it was too violent or graphic, it's not really that, actually. But I found it repeating itself over and over again. The first half is just an hour long rape that easily would have been just as effective in five minutes. This might be just me, but I think that if you're going to have a rape-sequence play out that long, you'll have to much more graphic and cruel than this. But that's just me and I might be a little sick.

Then there is the last half, which is slightly more varied than the first half, but it's basically just jumping from one torture sequence to the other. I do also feel that it comes out of nowhere. As I said, there is no story here and no emotion to the 'victim'. Therefore, I find it hard to engage into her actions, making the last half meaningless.

If anything, it's a well-made film if you are too judge it by sound, cinematography, gore effects and acting. It looks and sounds ugly enough, but seeing as it is what it is, I think it should have been much more gruesome.

The Presence (2010)
@ Blu-ray

There is not a single piece of dialogue in this film the first 20 minutes. Instead we get to see Mira Sorvino wandering aimlessly around, doing absolutely nothing. Then there are insanely many fade-to-black transitions between every scene and Shane West as a ghost that does nothing but stand still and glare. An interesting approach for a horror premise, but it's unbearable to watch.

But then, Justin Kirk appears as a useless boyfriend and the film does for a little while suddenly turn into a romance with so stiff acting and wooden dialogue that it makes you wish the whole film could be silent. A second ghost is later introduced, who's great plan is to break up the happy couple, but by then, I've got no interest left in this film. It's a slow burn film, yes, but there is no reward waiting for us. Instead, we're taken on a painful trip.

Cinderella (1950)
"Oh, well. What's a royal ball? After all, I suppose it would be frightfully dull, and-and-and boring, and-and completely... Completely wonderful."

@ Blu-ray

I didn't really like Cinderella. It's a generic Disney fairy tale-princess film that sticks to its winning formula, which is to be expected, but it was surprisingly bland. It's lacking spark. Cinderella is a rather boring princess that wins the heart of a boring prince. Their relationship is lacking the magic that has made so many other Disney films successful.

It does also very, very often feel like I'm watching a Tom and Jerry film, as the first hour is loaded with cat-and-mouse action sequences. I did not like those scenes. I've never been fond of Tom and Jerry, so this was not to my liking.

@ Blu-ray

Stop this. The only worthwhile film in this franchise is naturally the first film and now I'm sincerely hoping that this will be the end of a franchise that's ended up being nothing but recycled ideas used over again, and again.

Apart from some very few amusing moments, this is basically a complete bore from start til finish. Definitely more enjoyable for very young kids than for me, but I couldn't relate to, laugh at, care for or bother about anything in this film.

"I'm gonna murder that kid."

@ DVD

An unoriginal rehash of the original film. It's pretty much the exact same thing, except the change of location. It does even repeat several of the same jokes that were partly successful in the first Home Alone film.

That doesn't mean it ain't entertaining, though. Because it is exactly that for the most part. But it can't hold up against the first film, simply because it's lacking the little freshness the first film had.

"This is my house, I have to defend it."

@ DVD

The greatest part about this film is when the burglars try to break into the house and hurts themselves upon the many, dangerous traps created by Kevin. Everything leading up to that is actually a bit so-so.

The thing is, it's not particularly funny until you see the burglars getting their ass kicked. Every scene featuring Kevin's family is tiresome and seeing Kevin strutting around alone in his own house, without anything actually happening is rather boring. But man, it's so worth it in the end.

"First of all, keep him out of the light, he hates bright light, especially sunlight, it'll kill him. Second, don't give him any water, not even to drink. But the most important rule, the rule you can never forget, no matter how much he cries, no matter how much he begs, never feed him after midnight."

@ DVD

Gremlins is a true holiday classic. A terrific horror-comedy that while never being scar or particularly suspenseful, is hilariously funny during its entire running time. It might be a bit uneven genre-wise and it feels a bit slow whenever the Gremlins or Gizmo ain't on the screen, but honestly, I don't really care! It's a wonderful B-film filled with several hilarious moments.

It's also so insanely cute at times. Gizmo is so cute and fluffy, with his adorable design and amusing sounds. I'm in love with that little creature.

"But you know, the thing about romance is... people only get together right at the very end."

@ DVD

An usual Christmas film for me. I've seen it several times now, and one thing really occurred to me now. It has an insanely high rewatch value. Naturally, it's full of weaknesses, like way too many characters, making it impossible to develop all of them and that it's a bit too sweet or that the kid in this film doesn't act his age. Still, that doesn't bother me too much.

It's just entertaining all the way through, showing several amusing moments. It also manages to get me right into Christmas mood, which is perhaps the greatest thing about it. It's not many films that I've seen that manages that so easily.

Death Race 2 (2010)
"You see that? That's a stupid bitch."

@ DVD

The previous Death Race-film with Jason Statham was no masterpiece, but it was occasionally bloody entertaining. It was fun trash. This prequel is also very entertaining at times, but unlike the last film, this one is a bit more frustrating and it has more to do with the cast than the actual action.

The thing is, there are some very cool actors in this film, who is completely wasted. Ving Rhames is terribly boring. Sean Bean is barely used as a very poor villain and I don't know what the hell Danny Trejo is doing. There is also the little issue that Luke Goss doesn't have the charisma that Statham has, making him not so much of a cool leading role in a film like this.

"There are many strange legends in the Amazon. Even I, Lucas, have heard the legend of a man-fish."

@ DVD

There are many things about this film that's completely wonderful. The most obvious thing is the actual design of the costume for the creature, which is unbelievably cool. I also dig the musical score that appears every time he's on the screen. He might be a little bit overused, but he's so cool that its forgivable. There are also some very nice photography in this film, particularly the underwater scenes, which are gorgeous.

It might feel a bit long towards the end and I'm also slightly disappointed by the ending, which felt rather anticlimactic. And then there is the thing that none of the actors stick out. I barely remember them, but again, why should I? The creature is enough to make this a rather entertaining film.

This film didn't work for me. It was just bad, without having any charm whatsoever. Its biggest and most obvious issue is the first 30 minutes, which includes Dracula. John Carradine ain't Dracula. His Dracula is just a silly, laughable plastic bat. There's no menace around him. He's just a silly fool that serves absolutely no purpose and he's gone just as quickly as he arrived, taking half the film with him. What a waste.

Then there is the second half, which is full of inconsistencies, both plot-wise and logic-wise, resulting into a rather confusing mess of a second half. And yet again we get to witness an anticlimatic ending. What's the point of having Frankenstein's monster there if your just gonna keep him in the background til its like five minutes left?

"He is not insane. He simply wants to die."

@ DVD

Oddly enough, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man is at its best before anything about Frankenstein is included into the film. Up to that, the film is quite good, brilliantly mixing camp and creepiness together with atmosphere. Then it falls apart like a house of cards.

We get to witness a completely bonkers musical number that seems eagerly out of place, but that's not the worst thing. It's that Frankenstein's monster is a complete letdown. Because of editing, he appears more like a deranged sleepwalker than a dangerous monster. The ultimate showdown between the Wolf Man and Frankenstein's monster is also disappointing, ending in a huge anti-climax. Good beginning, starts getting weaker towards the middle and the ending is bad.

"You can run, but you can not save your hides!"

@ Blu-ray

Going into this film with very low expectations after the dreadful second film might have made this more enjoyable than it actually I was. I was positively surprised. It's a dazzling and energetic film that at times is genuinely funny, making it the best film in the franchise.

The best thing in these films have always been the penguins and they are as awesome as ever, but luckily, the creators of the film seems to have noticed how poor and unfunny the rest of the characters was. They are upgraded this time around, making them slightly less awful.

"And maybe there's no peace in this world, for us or for anyone else, I don't know. But I do know that, as long as we live, we must remain true to ourselves."

@ Blu-ray

Stanley Kubrick's epic sword 'n' sandal film is a brilliant piece of filmmaking filled with great action, intelligent dialogue and several well-crafted characters with some great performances by the actors. It's a huge film and one that needs to be seen.

As most old, classic epics Spartacus runs over 3 hours and one can't help but feel that some parts could have been cut out or trimmed further. Still, I guess it is necessary for these epics to include some extra footage.

"Now, be a good boy and put the gun to your head."

@ Netflix

A cut above other direct-to-video releases in some sections, particularly acting, as this film was surprisingly well-acted. While being very direct-to-video in other departments. The wolves, for instance, looks awful. Despite the familiarity to other demonic-kid films, the premise of Whisper is somewhat intriguing.

The problem with it is that it squanders most of the good things about by getting sillier for every minute, until it reaches maximum level of over-the-top silliness the last 20 minutes.

@ DVD

Pretty darn stupid and not enjoyable in any way, oddly enough. The main problem about this film is that it takes itself far to seriously. Judging by the premise of this film, this should be a fun slasher film. It's not. Because it takes itself to seriously by trying to get under the skin of the killer. The first half of this film is a tremendous bore, devoted to exposition, explaining every detail about the killer's childhood and so on. I don't need that in a film with this silly premise.

Once the killings finally starts happening, they are ruined by the fact that there are no purpose to them. They are just random killings that appears out of nowhere. With the exception of one kill that involves a moose head, none of the kills are thrilling, amusing frightening. It's just lazy and boring.

Just to be done with it, Nicolas Cage is an underrated actor that just happens to star in some slightly poor films at times and Seeking Justice is not among his best, despite it being mostly entertaining. For it is entertaining. It's simple, stupid entertainment.

While it is a entertaining film, the pacing is still uneven at times, particularly in the middle. One also can't skip the fact that this is a generic thriller with the usual predictable, ludicrous twists and turns that ultimately ends like most films in this genre do. The bad guy dies.

Found this one together with Bionicle: Mask of Light and thought "oh well, I might as well just see it, since I've already bothered with the first film." My reaction to it is quite similar. It's a short, straight-forward film that focuses more on giving as much action as it possibly can during its short running time. Which is natural for a film of this kind, I guess. But it bores me.

I guess you probably got to be a fan of the universe in order to get anything meaningful out of it. That you already need to have established a relationship towards the many, many different kind of characters we're presented with. If you don't have that, you'll see nothing but toys fighting each other.

"Feed her, feed her!"

@ Netflix

Alright, let's start by saying that if you, for some reason, don't have a slightly weird pleasure of watching "sick", "repulsive" or "disturbing" horror films, then this film ain't for you. Even if it ain't as "sick" as the hype led me to believe. It's gross, yes, but I've certainly seen far worse. It's more the idea of the premise this time that's disgusting. In the film, it actually just looks laughable.

The thing that's odd about this film is that it had some kin of artistic approach to it that I kinda liked. It was actually directed with some elegance. I also found Dieter Laser to be amusingly over-the-top. It's not a good film, but in this genre, there are far worse films out there.

Inception (2010)

"Dreams feel real while we're in them. It's only when we wake up that we realize something was actually strange. "

@ Blu-ray

Copying my note about the brilliant Inception from my 2010 Films - Top 10 list.

Well, what can be said about the mighty Inception? Christopher Nolan's complex masterpiece ain't only my favorite of this year, but it is also my favorite film of all time. I've watched it several times, and I constantly see something new in it. The originality, the acting, the score, the photography, the visuals and the multi-layered action. What's not to love here? Nolan creates a new world, and I lose myself into it. Every time.

It is one of the most beautiful, emotionally affective, and thoughtful films ever to be created. It's an example of how you can create a grand blockbuster, but yet create something that requires a brain. Inception restored hope for summer blockbusters, and this is a film that deserves a deeper treatment than what I'm giving it at the moment. It's spectacular.

"I've always said, "If you can't find a friend, make one.""

@ DVD

I just have to say that I ended up laughing several times during this film. Simply because it was so incredibly bizarre at times. Angela Bettis is perfect in the role of the weird and lonely, and to begin with, rather innocent girl. She's so odd and awkward that couldn't avoid chuckling whenever she tried to interact with other people. But that's by no means a bad thing. This film was a pleasant surprise.

It takes its time and starts out as a psychological drama. But then, with creepy elegance and careful precision it evolves into Dario Argento horror film. Which is clearly the inspiration for this film, as one of the characters is a fan of him. This is Carrie with a touch of Argento and Frankenstein, and its really good.

@ DVD

It does most certainly have its heart in the right place, and the potential to create a very cute and warm film that manages to touch some important subjects are truly there, while still being an amusing film for children. And it is most likely a very enjoyable film for children. It's very imaginative, whimsy, colorful and there is even a scent of emotion here. But I'm only halfway there. It's not developed enough for my taste.

Because it feels tremendously rushed. There are several elements that never gets explored or expanded enough. Jason Bateman's character feels unfinished. His relationship towards any of the other characters ain't developed enough and the film ends far to quickly. Natalie Portman's character is also rather boring.

"Bilbo Baggins, I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure."

@ Cinema HFR 3D

Outtake from my review:

"At last. Finally are we back in Middle-Earth. After several years in development hell, Peter Jackson takes us back to one of the most beloved and magical worlds in cinematic and literature history. Jackson did justice to J.R.R Tokien's The Lord of the Rings roughly ten years ago and the expectations for The Hobbit couldn't be any higher. Jackson decided to split The Hobbit into three separate films, including some other stuff Tolkien wrote, as well as Jackson's own artistic choices. And what we have here is the first film, An Unexpected Journey. The first step on this magical journey. For fear not, this is not the Lord of the Rings fans The Phantom Menace. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a magical film. It's not necessarily as good as The Lord of the Rings, but it's exactly what I hoped it would be. It's a whole different journey and it's a good one.

Opening up with Ian Holm returning as old Bilbo Baggins, as he tells the tale of how the dwarfs lost their home, Erebor, to the dragon Smaug, which is quickly followed by Elijah Wood returning as Frodo, talking to Bilbo. It all takes right before the opening scene of The Fellowship of the Ring. And from there I'm mostly sold. The opening prologues might occasionally feel a bit strange and overlong, but it's impossible to deny the impact it immediately stroke me with. I was back in the universe instantly. It's a powerful way to open the film and it got the exact right amount of majesty to it. The nostalgia, seeing it's about ten years since I saw this world at cinema, kick right in as well. Giving me a huge grin on my face, one that lasted through the entire film."

There is no doubt that Tarsem Singh is one of our best visionary directors today. The Fall was a gorgeous film filled with some of the most unique and impressive looking visuals I've seen and Immortals does very often feel like its a painting by one of the greatest artists during the old days. The visuals are majestic and this is one of those rare films you should see in 3D.

Shamefully Singh seems to have completely neglected the story, dialogue and the characters this time. Meaning that whenever there ain't some awesome fighting scenes, Immortals is mostly boring. But its visuals makes it worth it.

Traditional Disney in every way. It follows the formula of earlier Disney tales closely, never taking one step away from it. The result is a film that never surprises, engages or feels memorable (like the other Disney films). It's simply not fresh enough to justify it's existence. Changing the color of our heroine ain't enough to acquire freshness.

The songs are also strangely unremarkable. I didn't like them, can't even remember anything from them. Which is a genuine problem with the whole film. It's not a film I'm going to remember. The Disney formula might provide with some nostalgia, but this is a film that's played to safe for its own good, reducing it into mere mediocrity.

Ugh. This is not my type of film at all. Earlier this year I hated on Saludos Amigos and this is probably a sequel to that film. It's then safe to say that I did not care for this film at all. There is a somewhat cute moment with a penguin early in the film, but besides that, there is absolutely nothing in this film for me. It doesn't entertain or amuse me at all.

@ Blu-ray

I'm a huge fan of stop-motion and the animation in this film is terrific. Every puppet, set and detail is masterfully crafted and flawlessly animated. That's why it's such a shame to see it getting wasted in this film. It doesn't deserve its own spectacular animation. Because, despite what one might think, a good story is still more important. The story in this film isn't engaging on any level. It feels like a short film that's been stretched out to a feature film without actually adding anything worth adding.

The vocal talent in the film is also severely wasted on small roles that never gets any chance to shine and Hugh Grant is miscast as the Pirate Captain. There are however some funny moments in this film, and there are some amusing subtle jokes hiding in the background. But one shouldn't really have to carefully look in the background of a film to find enjoyment?

Visually gorgeous, delightfully free of tacked on humor, bizarrely weird, filled with depth and at times strikingly beautiful. This is a film that does many things right and reminds us of why we love Studio Ghibli. It's a very cute film. Yet, it's altered by some issues that keeps it from being among Studio Ghibli's greatest films.

The first and foremost is the pacing. At times it feels incredibly slow, which shouldn't be necessary in a film in this genre. There is also the fact that music doesn't suit the film and it feels out of place when it appears.

Brave is by all means a decent film, but when compared to what Pixar has dished up previously, it's safe to say that Brave is a major disappointment. It is however their greatest looking film so far. It's visually stunning and Merida's hair is very impressive.

I do like the first 40 minutes, which I find very enjoyable. I liked the direction the story was heading and I laughed quite a few times. Then it suddenly changed when the mother got turned into a bear. Comparing it to Brother Bear was unavoidable. I instantly thought it got much more tedious when that happened, and despite it pulling itself back up towards the end, it failed to reach true greatness.

A Norwegian thriller that's at its best during the first half. During the first half it's an intense, well-developed psychological thriller that keeps me wondering about what's actually going on. It's perfectly cold and distanced to some well-created characters and it features some great acting (not the kid. He's terrible.)

But it suddenly turns into half-baked ghost story that doesn't make any sense at all because it opens several plot holes. It's if they suddenly decided to change the script and genre in to something completely different. It doesn't work.

Christopher Nolan's first film about the Caped Crusader is, while not reaching up to number two and three, still a masterpiece. Nolan resurrects Batman in a way that makes us easily forget that Batman Forever and Batman & Robin ever existed. He brings in some very much needed realism, darkness and smartness, creating an action film that is equally entertaining as it's emotionally captivating.

This is how you reboot and create an origin story. It's a film that's perfect in nearly every department. It's a film that never forgets the true essence of the greatest superhero of all time. It takes its time, it builds up the characters and creates an universe that stays true to the Batman we want. All hail Nolan.

Stumbled across this while looking in some old boxes and felt a sudden need to see it for nostalgic reasons. I used to enjoy the toys when I was a young boy and it's pretty clear that this is a film that's only for children that plays with the toys or adults that are fans of the universe. Seeing as I haven't touched the toys or seen them in many years, I can say that it isn't for me any longer.

It's naturally a short, straightforward film with a simple plot and plenty of action. But it does feel tremendously boring because none of the characters are allowed to grow. They're all given a slight personality, but they're all dull. It's also confusing to know which one is who at times. I do also feel that I'm not properly invited into the universe and I feel a bit confused at times. The animation itself might have been decent in 2003, but now it's just looking bad.

I thought it was alright. It's not particularly good, but it could have been a lot worse. I guess I liked it better because I was watching it with my girlfriend, but that's just a speculation. I thought it were funny sometimes and there were some cute moments.

But it's completely shallow, generic and over-stuffed with characters, whom few of them are given any significant treat of character development. I do also have a hard time believing that pregnancy is accurately portrayed in this film.

It's basically Twilight without the vampires. It features an awfully uninteresting love triangle, a poor script, laughable CGI and plenty of boredom. It does have a enthralling atmosphere to it, but it's ultimately wasted in the end.

It does very often feel very campy, much thanks to the wolf, but also because of Gary Oldman. His performance goes absurdly over-the-top on nearly every occasion, making Red Riding Hood slightly better than what it actually is.

"I thought we would be safe forever. But forever isn't as long as I'd hoped."

@ Cinema

I've never hated these films, I think people are being way to harsh on them. Of course, they are not particularly good films, (except the first film, yeah) but they are not that terrible. They have their share of stupidity, yes, but there are also some occasionally sweet and entertaining moments in them.

The last film in this franchise had the possibility to be quite solid, but there are unfortunately some problems with it. The most obvious one is that there ain't really a lot happening in here, except for the final battle, meaning that you didn't really have to make two parts out of Breaking Dawn. It could also have dived further into Bella finally being a vampire. They've just swept through it.

This is going to sound a bit weird, but the greatest and worst thing about this film lies in its ending. The final battle is awesome. While I was watching it I was constantly taken by surprise as important "heroes" got their head ripped off in a brutal manner. It made me go "Oh shit" and I was really enjoying myself through the entire battle, which actually lasted a while. Then there just had to be what's most likely the biggest cop out in recent history. The whole battle was just a vision. Fuck off, what an anticlimax that turned out to be.

I did really want to like this film more, after all, I'm weak for Kristen Stewart and she is much more enjoyable as vampire Bella than human Bella. But that final thing about the ending just pissed me off. Luckily, there are many cute moments here to begin with and some parts of the ending are awesome.

My third time seeing it and I still find myself enjoying it very much. It's constantly entertaining all the way through. I love the way it makes fun at modern horror films, and I'm severely enjoying the whole meta-thingy. The scene with the cops discussing which one of them is likely to die first is brilliant.

My trouble with the film lies in its ending. I do wish that they would have skipped the final scene at the hospital and ended the film with Jill being carried away to the hospital. But oh well.

Such a beautiful film about warmth, humor, love and loneliness. It's a wonderfully playful film that skillfully manages to combine warmth emotional feeling, naive humor together with a touch of darkness, as it touches several dark themes. Such as depression, loneliness, obesity, suicide and mental illness. Which is why it's so much more impressive, and it gives its emotional ending real power.

My only problem with this film is its pacing issues, occasionally it feels a little longer than what it actually is. This might be a result of its simple narrative, which can feel a bit repetitive at times.

@ Blu-ray

It's a decent film when it comes to action and there are loads of neat visuals, despite them being slightly overused at times. The acting is also great, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law have a great chemistry together, while Jared Harris is terrific as Moriarty. Shamefully, Noomi Rapace is wasted in her role.

The thing that keeps this film from being as good as the first film is that it's completely lacking the same sense of mystery. This just feels like an ordinary action film, there's not much Sherlock Holmes left here.

After some bad direct-to-video sequels without the original cast, one would think that by bringing them back, the film would automatically be much better. Wrong and if you think that, you're living in a fantasy world. Because it's the same damn thing over again. Apart from some chuckles, Stifler doing Finch's mom, this is just as unfunny as the direct-to-video sequels. It's tired and predictable, and bringing back the main cast doesn't change that.

It might have been possibly worthwhile if I had a nostalgic feel towards it, which I guess is the only reason some people would like this, but I don't have that blessing. So for me, it's safe to say that the original cast is back, but the film fails to do anything new with them. The only difference between this film and the other, bad sequels are the cast.

Copy/paste my note from one of my other lists, as it still stands very much valid.

Another Marvel film that is very entertaining. The action in it is great with spectacular special effects. It also features one of the best ensemble casts so far in any Marvel film with the talents of Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba and Stellan Skarsgård. It's entertaining nearly all the way through with the "fish-out-of-water" elements being the most enjoyable ones. Still, it doesn't manage to be among the very best Marvel films. Which is simply because of Hiddleston's villain Loki. He is done justice in The Avengers, but I find him to be rather poor in Thor. I don't never really see him as an actual menace in this one. Then there is all the other evil thingy's that doesn't really appear to be any threat whatsoever.

And, this is basically just for the whole Avengers-stuff. I don't think Thor fit's in to be honest. While the film does nicely blend in with the other Avengers-films, I do have a hard time making Thor's inclusion believable. I mean, he is a God. I know it is all fiction and etc., but he's a God. I'm just struggling a bit with that. Oh well.

"My sister sent me a postcard. All it said was, "Come to Paris. It will be good for you." Forty-eight hours after I arrived, she and everyone I'd met were dead."

@ DVD

I think I've found a contender for the most annoying and stupid character in film history ever. When a film that is basically all about one character messing around alone in some tunnels, at least make that character somewhat likable. And it doesn't help that Shannyn Sossamon's acting is completely off as well and seeing as she has the whole film on her shoulders, it shouldn't be necessary to say that it totally collapsed.

The premise of using the catacombs for a horror film is interesting, but the films is infused with a hyperactive sense of style that wears out its welcome almost immediately, the headache-inducing visuals only shows one of the movie's many, many problems along with an unlikable lead character. The plot is weak, the dialogue is awful, it's sloppily filmed, it's lacking suspense and the final twist is one of the silliest things I've seen in a while.

It remains a solid, old-fashioned blockbuster. It's very entertaining and works well as an origins tale and it's filled with good performances. Chris Evans is surprisingly appealing in the leading role and Tommy Lee Jones is always a blast. Still, it is Hugo Weaving that really makes this film. He is absolutely wonderful as the villain. He is just as menacing and sinister as he should be. For me, he is easily one of the best Marvel villains so far.

What keeps the film from being true greatness is that it's really nothing special or different. The action is great, but it is never anything that's totally extraordinary in it. It's just some very solid entertainment that I keep enjoying. However, one should never underestimate solid entertainment.

It's fast-paced and I've definitely seen much worse. But this is still one of the least memorable films I've seen in a while. The visuals might be great, but the plot is boring, the fight scenes are lacking edge (could really have used some blood, this was way to adjusted for children) and the characters are dire.

I'm usually very fond of this genre, which is probably why I'm not giving this film a lower rating. It's a very bad film, a true failure, but it's entertaining at times for what it is.

I actually used to hate this film, now after seeing it again, I don't really remember why. It's actually quite decent and at times really good. I do particularly like the middle part of the film towards the ending. I think the action there is quite good, with the alien chasing people in the corridors. I do also like the relationship between Sigourney Weaver and Charles Dance. Shame that his character got killed early.

But there are some huge problems here for me. There are way too many characters here, and few of them are given any personality at all. We know that all of them are ruthless murderers, but at least give them something before you kill them off. I do also think that the ending is terrible. When "the company" starts busting in. Not particularly because she dies at the end, but I just think it's silly and cheap.

Unfortunately, there are some silly things in this film that ruins it a lot. There are too many unnecessary side plots and supporting characters that serve absolutely no purpose to the main plot.

Yet, the film is entertaining enough to make me partly forgive some other flaws as well. Like the weak character development on our lead, the stupid police and a drawn-out ending.

Previously I found myself liking Aliens more than Alien. Now, I find myself liking Aliens less than Alien. It might be because Aliens is more of a pure action film and doesn't focus as much on terrifying suspense as Alien. But that doesn't mean it isn't good. Alright! Racking up the movies! Even though as the giraffe says, the overall quality has left something to be desired. Hope you start working some better films in the rest of the way!

Sounds like you've wound up at exactly my impressions of Scott Pilgrim. I thought it to be a very overrated movie at the time of its release.

And your comments and overall impressions of The Ward are spot-on.

Hmmm, it appears I rated The Singing Detective a 7/10. Gosh, I forgot that I even saw that movie. Wonder what redeeming value I saw in it... *shrugs*

The biggest question about the film is why the hell is Owen Wilson's character getting married to that bitch? Why haven't he left her and her family already?

LOL, I laughed really hard at this. I think we're very much alone in our opinion on Midnight in Paris, though I agree with you that the Academy's nomination is heavily based on the fact that it was made by Allen, and that they would've ignored it otherwise.

Aw man, that sucks about Ghost Rider 2. (or whatever it's called) Like you, I actually enjoyed the first one- Campy fun is a great way to put it. So I had modest hopes that this one would deliver. Guess I'll give it a rental sometime.

Yep, Troll Hunter is one of those movies that makes a case for the found-footage genre not being completely useless. (Too bad that for every ONE Trollhunter there are about TWENTY The Devil Inside-s.) Clever, fresh, fun time and I may have to give it another look sometime soon too!

Ouch. Definitely enjoyed House of the Devil more than you did. But looks like we felt pretty much the same toward Dream House. I'm VERY interested in checking out the Awakening. Somehow that movie slipped by my radar and only came to my attention a week ago.

Rubber seems to be one of those movies that is very polarizing. Even among people who enjoy strange, off-beat movies. As you obviously already know, I didn't take to it as well as I hoped. Nice to have my opinion validated though- thanks for the quote.

Okay, well I'm gonna have to figure a way to see The Avengers this week. I didn't think I was especially excited about it at first, but most reviews are pretty darn positive and I want to be able to weigh in on all the conversation swirling around the movie.

I see some people have complained about the rhythm in it , that Burton doesn't manage to combine the comedy, drama or spooky horror in it. That's bullshit if you ask me. He does it superbly.

Ha! Glad to hear this. Hopefully I'll enjoy the movie every bit as much as you did!

Double Indemnity is just so fucking good, isn't it? Watched that one a couple months ago and was blown away. Glad you saw it and loved it!

What the hell is Liam doing in that movie? I just don't understand...

I'm very much on board with your feelings about It's a Wonderful Life and I've always felt it's a bit overrated as well. Appreciate seeing some honest, if less than glowing, feedback on that one.

Very cool that you've revisited Burton's Batman films. I'm rather tempted to do the same, but I don't think I have time for it now. Maybe in December when I focus more on the films on my shelf.

Also I see you've been revisiting the Harry Potter films. I've only seen 1 through 5, and while I love the books I was never able to say the same for the films. I thought Prisoner of Azkaban was far too rushed & thus diminished the impact of Sirius's death, which was a big issue for me at the time & led to my abandoning the series for a little while. Of the first 5 I thought Goblet of Fire was the best. I may eventually give in & watch the last 3 films, but honestly I'm very content to avoid them in favor of re-reading the entire series instead.
