The Best RPGs I've EVER played...

1. Chrono Trigger - Nintendo DS
Oh, my God. What can I say about Chrono Trigger that hasn't already been said by a million other people on Listal or anywhere for that matter!? It's the best RPG game I think I will ever play. I can't imagine how any other game could topple this. The first time I played this was during June of 2005 and it took me about a week to beat it. I played for hours and hours and it pretty much consumed me to the very end. I was compelled upon completing it to go back and get ALL the other endings as well which was 12 and I got them all and was not disappointed in any way. I received the DS version of Chrono Trigger from Dante for Christmas this year and I admit I cheated my way through it this time but it still took me 45 hours to get through the damn game and I played it off and on pretty constantly for about a month! I'm still waiting to play Chrono Cross and I hope that it's as good as Chrono Trigger. I've heard great things about it but I guess I'll be the judge of that myself whenever I play it...

Update:
I finally played Chrono Cross and despite all the good things I heard about it the game just wasn't as good as Chrono Trigger to me. Don't get me wrong it's an enjoyable game and I wouldn't mind going through it for all the endings but I just wasn't compelled to really do as much with it as Chrono Trigger. I guess I was hoping for more but like I said it was still enjoyable.

2. Okage: Shadow King - PlayStation 2
I got this as a gift for Christmas from my parents back in 2001 along with my first PS2. This was really the first RPG I ever played,(A Link to the Past was officially my first but I was a bit young to know what I was doing with it at the time I played it). Okage I feel hasn't received a lot of attention as being a great RPG. That saddens me. This game has a great story, characters, music, locations, extra material and should be played by anyone if given the chance!

3. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - GameCube
Got this as a pre-graduation gift back in May 2007 from my mom. I found out about this awesome game from Dante who was also playing it at the time. I got it for $20 bucks at Wal-Mart and played it over the course of about maybe 2-3 weeks I guess. It's a damn long game and well worth the time put into it. I still gotta play the N64 Paper Mario game. I hope to do that eventually because this game was amazing!

5. Super Paper Mario - Nintendo Wii
Great game as well but not as good as The Thousand Year Door.

6. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars - Super famicom and SNES
I originally rented this as a kid back when it first came out but had no idea how to play RPGs at the time and I mostly played games like Sonic the Hedgehog or regular Mario games at that time. It wasn't until about 10 years later I'd say that I got this at a local video game store for about 45 bucks and went home and played it over the course of a few days I believe. Damn good game I gotta say! I went back and re-played it with Dante over this past summer and did the extra stuff this time I didn't do before.

7. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - Nintendo DS
Another great Mario RPG game that I enjoyed. It's a good game and is pretty challenging. My biggest gripe with this game is the fact that the developers made Luigi into a complete joke...

8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Fo... - Game Boy Advance
My dad had the original Link to the Past on Super NES and I played a bit of it back then but my gaming skills weren't really good enough to keep playing plus I was like 6 or 7 as well and like I said with Super Mario RPG I mostly played Sonic and Mario platformers at that time. I just beat this back in September for the first time actually! It took me about a week or so and I had to look a few things up online to progress a few times but I FINALLY beat this masterpiece! I wanna go back and play the first Zelda game now on the NES because of this and play Zelda 2 after that as well!

9. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons - Game Boy Color
Me and brother got both Ages and Seasons at the same time. I had Seasons and he had Ages. Seasons was the first Zelda game I really played. I played A Link to the Past on the SNES but never got anywhere with it at the time. I loved the story line of these games and the fact that you had to have beaten both games to gain access to the REAL final battle with Ganon. I went through both games and when I finally beat Ganon I felt fucking accomplished!! I want to buy these games again and go back and re-play them!

11. Pokemon: Red Version - Game Boy
When Pokemon Red and Blue first game out in America I was about 10 years old. At the time Pokemon was a HUGE fad amongst people my age and everyone it seems at the time had Pokemon Fever. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing someone wearing Pokemon apparel or talking about it! So, when me and my brother got our copies of Red and Blue, which I think was on my 11th birthday I guess, me and him quickly became addicted to raising and catching Pokemon. I had Red and he had Blue and I don't think I ever played Pokemon Blue. We got really into Pokemon at that time and began collecting all the figures that were out and he collected the Pokemon cards up until he was like 15 years old. I even made some friends with this game at the time it was new. Pokemon Red will always be remembered by me as a great game.

12. Pokémon: Yellow Version - Game Boy
My favorite Pokemon out of the 151 Pokemon was Pikachu. Now they have added so many more Pokemon that it's ridiculous! I haven't really cared about Pokemon since I was like 12. Anyway, when Pokemon Yellow came out I fucking wanted to get my little hands on it so badly!! I believe I got this for Christmas when I was 11 years old. I wanted to get the Pikachu Gameboy Color as well but I never got that. I loved this as much as the original and sometimes even more because of Pikachu! I really loved Pikachu back then and A LOT of other people did as well. Nintendo definitely knew what they were doing when they made this game!

13. Pokemon: Gold Version - Game Boy Color
This was really the last Pokemon game I wanted to play. I got this for Christmas when I was 12 and my brother got Pokemon Silver. I loved this game as much as Red and Yellow and I even grew to love the additional Pokemon they came up with. I also got the Pikachu 2 hand held pet that you could gain points with and trade the points I believe via the infrared connection to the Gameboy Color and receive special prizes by doing it! I was pretty big on the Pokemon at the time but I just grew out of it and other kids came along and picked the games up and a new generation took the place of ours. Some people to this day,(one being a friend of mine), are still Pokemon crazy.

I haven't played a great deal of RPGs but I have played enough I feel to make this list! I hope my tid bits of information and opinions are interesting.

At least you've played Okage Shadow King.

Meh...Okage Shadow King and Chrono Trigger are the only good games on this list. In *my* opinion, at least. :)

I honestly was not that impressed by Chrono Trigger, personally. Chrono himself bugs me for some reason.

Then again I prolly missed the Chrono Trigger train back when I was playing Earthbound lol :P

Got my vote mostly because of the Pokémon's stories :3
My childhood = pokémon
From the gameboy games to the toys and cards, I used to have everything haha

Seeing Super Mario RPG on this list got you my vote practically by itself. Excellent game.

I see you liked the Paper Mario games on GCN and Wii; did you manage to play the original on N64?
Also, have you played TLoZ: Link's Awakening on original GameBoy? It was a really well done game, and high on most Zelda fans' list of best Zelda titles.

@ Stomphoof: Chrono was probably the most insipid character in that nearly flawless game, but that was mostly due to his lack of vocal (well... 'written') interaction with the other characters.
That aside, agreed -- Earthbound NEEDS to be on this list, as it was probably the best and most 'under-hyped' RPG on SNES.

I have recently found out about Earthbound. Having read about it and seen screen shots I've become interested in playing it. I haven't had the chance to play the original Paper Mario on the N64 yet. I do want to play it though. I haven't played Link's Awakening on the the Gameboy either...I'd like to play it though along with the other Zelda games.

@ D.Burd - Earthbound is one of the most amazing RPGS I have ever played. I want them to release it on the Wii Virtual Console so bad :(
