This list is really about what got me into gaming in the first place - the well written roleplaying game. Well-written dialogue, realistic character development, and an original plot meld gaming and literature into a new art form. I first experienced this effect at 10 years old on Christmas morning as I took on the role of a poor lost soul named Terra and her quest for identity. Playing Final Fantasy III (as it was called then) was truly a beautiful experience that redefined what a game could be. This list is a testament to the best games of this type that I've come across.
