I'm picking this one as my predicted winner cuz I think the Academy want a clean sweep kinda win this year. Picture/Director match, we haven't had one in a while. And they most definitely want their fuzzy-wuzzy 'washes down like peach schnapps' queer-eye for the movie guy kind of victory this year. Y'know, get some of the stink off of last year's fuck-up by Bonnie and Clyde. This is the victory they WANTED Moonlight to have... "let's see if we can get it right this time shall we?"

Because every critics' choice poll panel won't shut the frack up over this one...

It sounds like the typical generic indie crowd pleaser, that every Best Picture year has at least one of to fill a quota. Consider it this year's Little Miss Sunshine?...

The Post (2017)

First, you hire Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks.
Then you get Steven Speilberg to direct.
double check!
Then you make the movie about politics 'n' war and stuff. And you make it total crowd pleasing.
hehe, TRIPLE check!
Then you throw in some dramatic music, slap an uncomplicated title on this bitch and call it a day!

I've been hearing a lot of mixed reactions to this one. The trailer did nothing for me. But, most movie fans these days seem to get rock hard over Del Toro, and let's face it... kind of like Peter Jackson or... God willing, some day, Tim Burton... Del Toro's one of those creative mad monster movie geniuses that everybody's on pins and needles over, waiting for the Academy to finally RECOGNIZE something of his!

Now HERE'S something that sounds interesting to me. Yes, it's yet another war movie and war is bad, and people die, and boo hoo hoo let's all sing Sarah MacLachlan songs and be friends.

Like it or not, war movies are hot! (You can thank Spielberg for that one) and this one is done by the Batman guy. Ah hell, I still haven't seen it yet, but common, it's got death-defying weirdo panoramic IMAX visuals. Lots of explosions and exotic landscapes. Not enough character depth? Well who has time for that anyways, common Nolan make something explode and then have the actors, brutally crawl through [fake] blood and guts across a beach covered in unknown sharp pointy things. Then hit us with those textbook bombarding synth bass over the soundtrack.

...okay, I got carried away there for a sec. All I'm saying is that when I finally get through sampling all these, Dunkirk sounds like the one I might actually stay awake through.

The only one of these I've seen (so far), and although it's kind of cool to see it getting attention, I wish more films like these really would, it's also kind of unsettling.

I just don't think it was really Best Picture kind of material? Or, if it is, I really didn't think the Academy would show it this kind of love, especially considering it looks like a glossier, fresher, more intelligent Scream installment. An MTV studios kind of production. The only thing I can think of to explain why it would be getting Best Picture buzz would be the Academy is working some kind of angle???

And, if you're a truther like myself, that's really the unsettling part...

Darkest Hour (2017)
Because what Oscar race would be complete without a lil' history revisionment?

This year, it's the life and times of Winston Churchill. Here, Atonement director Joe Wright, GLORIOUSLY glosses up ol' Winst. to make him look like some kind of patron saint, when in reality he was a tyrant, a scumbag, and a braggart. He was one of the first military leaders in modern history to break the acknowledged rules of engagement by attempting to starve the German citizens to death on order to serve his own agenda(s).

If that sounds too cynical, I'm just saying: Hollywood has a habit of RE-writing history [through film] and every Best Picture race seems to have at least one.
