Best Picture 2014...
222 8 8.31. Boyhood (2014)
2 7.4 7.72. Selma (2014)
789 8 8.13. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
111 8 8.54. Birdman (2014)
78 7.7 8.25. The Imitation Game (2014)
'Overrated', still an interesting bit of history that needs to be told.
I just didn't quite find anything overall 'profound' about the movie. Didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. And I'm sure left out quite a great deal of information, that would have made the Alan Turing story much more complex than people realize...
Films that are either lacking a trailer or don't sound appetizing. I significantly 'doubt' their chances - to clarify, only for professional reasons. My personal taste is ALWAYS likely to differ from what the Academy swallows every year *sigh*...
79 6.8 79. Big Eyes (2014)
Interesting. The kind of world my mom came about in. She had to deal with a lot of this male egotism herself. I think she'd like this movie.
The packing of the picture itself I don't think will be enough to convince the Academy of Tim Burton's -long overdue- Best Director consideration, but may be enough to warrant this particular category. This may be his strongest -'professional'- effort to date (y'know, like "A History of Violence" for Cronenberg) but something tells me though that's entirely the wrong approach. Where's the darkness? If Burton's to be taken professionally serious, it should be for what brought admirers about; "Scissorhands", "Beetlejuice", "Ed Wood", "Nightmare Before Christmas", ect...
Look at me telling Burton not to betray his art - fits with "Big Eyes's" motif...
239 7.9 8.310. Gone Girl (2014)
73 7.3 7.211. Inherent Vice (2014)
72 7.2 7.412. Foxcatcher (2014)
HANDS DOWN! Probably the favorite going in to this year and so far the most likely to win. Very atmospheric and observational. I found it very disturbingly absorbing. Mostly though, it contains some of the best acting of the year and that's probably what gives it it's leverage to perhaps pull off a sweep!...
275 8.1 8.913. Interstellar (2014)
What d'ya know - it is the "Contact" of the 21st Century! Although not quite living up to the expectations I had for it - it's still pretty scientific and worth of praise.
Sadly though, my gut instinct tells me this is gonna be more of a 'personal choice' for folks rather than professional opinion. I think it's worth getting to the Best Picture category but not sure it has the juice to get it the 'win'. But still a worthy cinematic spectacle!...
55 6.4 6.314. Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014)
In spite of the white Moses, still worth watching -although, relating to the Bible in name only (Moses as a 'pragmatist'? Where does Hollywood come up with this shit!- but still, resembling old school "Gladiator" Ridley - and I like how it was done as a bidding tribute to his now departed brother Tony.
Sounds like there's something personal behind the lavish production?...
Just call it a hunch, but every year the Academy seems to include something that almost seems like an after-thought to the mix. This could be is for this year? Y'all know how sneaky those December releases can be...
36 6.7 7.215. Unbroken (2014)
America LOVES their sentimental distractions. And this looks like a nice one. Set to come out around Christmas time. What a nice, warm cozy picture to settle into - to make Americans forget about the loss of basic civil liberties, starving third world countries. The epidemic of 'white supremacy' in modern culture. Or any of the potential global disasters that may be occurring at the time of this film's release?...
24 7.1 7.116. Kill the Messenger (2014)
This is the one "I'm" most excited to see. Based on the ALL TOO TRUE story of the CIA's illegal involvement of narcotics and backdoor arms dealing in the Iran-Contra affair. I wonder how much of the TRUTH is actually gonna be IN this movie.
How much, will no doubt determine how much the Academy loves it this year of that I have no doubt. Baaaaa...goes the sheeple!
32 6.5 6.617. The Homesman (2014)
160 6.1 6.618. Into the Woods (2014)
MASS Princess Programming right on cue. What is Disney's obsession - or for that matter what is the obsession of the public?
I have no doubt (since it's been hyped so bad) that it will mostly likely no doubt get the Big Nominations. I just personally don't feel all that enthusiastic to see it. *gag*
