Honorable Mentions

Games I played in 2012 that I thought were fun but not enough to scratch the top ten.

... - Other

One of the few enjoyable sand box games to come out outside of Rockstar recently since Just Cause 2. It was a good length in terms of playtime and its story was entertaining enough to make you stay. The combat system and the drive by chase mechanics are very fun but the gunplay mechanics are really awkward and rest of the gameplay are a tad bit boring and repetitive.

Max Payne 3 - PlayStation 3

The sole reason why I didn't put Max Payne 3 in the top 10 is because the gameplay felt quite repetitive and the AI was completely unfair. I still found the game fun because of its slow motion mechanic and the narrative style was very entertaining.

The latest game from Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is probably one of the good JRPG's to come out in 2012 and is a hell lot better than Final Fantasy XIII-2. Seriously, why does that piece of s**t Final Fantasy XIII get a sequel? Digressing, The Last Story is a fun JRPG in terms of gameplay mechanics and level up system though it is let down by its slightly ludicrous story.

First of, farewell to 38 Studios, the developer of this very fun action RPG. The game's three button combat system is second to none in comparison to other RPG's, particularly a game with similar three button combat *cough*Fable*cough*. The crafting system is surprisingly deep, there is a good variety of weapons and there are a lot of quests at its disposal. It is only let down by its standard level story and some of the quests are not very interesting and can become quite repetitive.

Assassin's Creed III - PlayStation 3

Ooooooh... I was really contemplating on putting this one on the list but I remembered that I considered this game the weakest in the main Assassin's Creed line. Now don't get me wrong, this game is still good and is still fun to play. I consider it weak because there isn't any variety in the missions, especially in the assassination missions in the main quest and it is marred by technical issues from lags to bugs. Oh and the ending sucks ass. On the good side, the hunting and crafting system is great, the naval battle gameplay is the best I've ever played in a game, the side quests are very interesting and beneficial and the combat, though very easy, is a lot of fun.

Hotline Miami - PC Games

I never imagined that NES looking games can get this violent. Hotline Miami is an addicting and surprisingly strategic top down action game with a very rousing soundtrack. It doesn't crack the top ten because it does have its unfair share of difficulty spikes and it's quite annoying that you die in one hit and have to start again, especially when you get killed by the last enemy.

Spec Ops: The Line - PlayStation 3

This is the surprise gem of 2012. Spec Ops: The Line is an ordinary military shooter with adequate gameplay which has a decent 4-6 hour play time. Now, I generally avoid military shooters, with the exception of Battlefield, because it has become so generic in terms of story, gameplay and content. Spec Ops: The Line shines from telling a dark, thought provoking and uncompromisingly harsh story using its gameplay brilliantly as a narrative instead of just a tool to control the pace and this makes up for its adequate gameplay. As I played through the game, I felt like crap because my character did something horrific and its gameplay and pacing never lets us forget.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - PlayStation 3

A ridiculously difficult yet enjoyably addicting strategy game. While the AI and its mechanical rules can be downright unfair and sadistic like the AI having a free turn or being able to shoot through high ground walls and corners, winning a session always feels worth it and makes you keep coming back again and again. The strategy gameplay feels balanced and as all good strategy games, it makes you think. Its customisation of your soldiers is surprisingly effective in terms of camaraderie. It is always the most heart breaking and annoying thing whenever your best soldier, who you have been painstakingly customising to the fullest and have a sense of connection with dies at the hands of aliens and if you are playing Iron Man mode, you can never get him/her back.

Mass Effect 3 - Xbox 360

Oh how I wished to have this game at the top of my list but sadly, that is not the case. I have a long history with the Mass Effect series. Mass Effect is the first game I had and played on the Xbox 360 and Mass Effect 2 is, in my opinion, a modern video game masterpiece and probably my second favourite game ever. When Mass Effect 3 was announced, no game has ever driven me to an excitable hype. Yes, the ending did ruin it for me and no, it did not meet the expectations set by Mass Effect 2 but if the ending was great and it did meet expectations, it would've been higher in the list. It has some noticeable downgrades like an incompetent journal system and the dialogue conversations were considerably downplayed. That aside, Mass Effect 3 is still a very good game. It has the best gameplay mechanics in all the series as it mixes both aspects of its predecessors in a balance and coherent style. The story, before its disappointing ending, was still as riveting and complex as the first two and had many stand out and downright emotional moments that for me, a long time Mass Effect fan, is bliss to experience.

Torchlight II - PC Games

A tremendously fun and very indulgent point and click action game. Killing hordes and hordes of enemies and collecting a lot of gold is very satisfying, especially when you gradually get stronger and stronger by its very intricate and varied skill system. Having 4 classes actually makes the game a lot tighter in terms of content but still delivers more than other big budgeted games for a small price.

Borderlands 2 - PlayStation 3

Unlike films, video games tend to have better quality when a sequel comes along from a new intellectual property and Borderlands 2 is a great example of that. I did not like the first Borderlands. It had a dodgy hit mechanic, unimpressive customisation and downright boring single player campaign. Borderlands 2 has significantly improved all the problems I had with the first one and all the better, exceeded and expanded what is good about the first one. It delivers a truck load of content at your heart's desire with a great customisation system, large variety of weapons, an amazing 4 player co-op feature and a plethora of endlessly entertaining quests.

Guild Wars 2 - PC Games

I consider Guild Wars 2 the video game deal of 2012. Not only is it endlessly content packed that matches most of MMORPGs today, when you buy the game, it is yours forever. No subscription fees whatsoever. It is very overwhelming how much stuff this game offers and how it gets everything right, from its fluent and balanced level up system, very interesting monthly events, varied classes, an intricate and highly tactical combat system and the amazing world vs world mode, going to war against a different server. All of that without a subscription fee.

Far Cry 3 - PlayStation 3

This game and Borderlands 2 proves that shooters don't have to stick to a script and becoming a generic first person shooter adding to the saturation today. Far Cry 3 is an immensely entertaining open world shooter that offers a lot of content just from its single player. Its gameplay has a satisfying open minded feel to it, having a vast array of weapons and each having its own customisation, a very interesting skill system, a fun hunting system and a brilliant crafting system, all of them encouraging you to explore the world. The story is quite compelling to match and Vaas, one of the main villains is probably one of the new great game characters.

Dishonored - PlayStation 3

To me, this is the best assassins theme game of 2012. Not Assassin's Creed 3 but Dishonored. While short on story in terms of length and depth, Dishonored shines in its level design and intricate gameplay. Play it however you want to play it with either full frontal brutality or inventive stealthing to complete a mission and it keeps itself fresh with a disposal of interesting and fun powers and tools that can be used for navigating and killing.

FEZ - Xbox 360 Live Arcade

I am a giant sucker for indie games, especially the ones that involves puzzles. Fez is probably the best puzzle based game I have played since Portal 2 and a great homage to the pixelated, old school games of our childhood. Its graphical style gives a sense of nostalgia and the gameplay relies on puzzles that are based on an ingenious hybrid of 2D and 3D perspectives and its brilliant level design and encouraging sense of exploration adds to the uniqueness and endless fun to the game.

Journey - PlayStation Network

Journey is a one of a kind game where in an instance, simplicity is its own beauty. While the gameplay itself is simple, Journey instead goes with giving an experience. I know that the word "emotion" has been thrown around when people talk about this game but that's what makes it so much fun to play through again and again. The visuals and graphics are the best I have ever seen in any game, the soundtrack is amazing and in the entire runtime, even though running short of less than 2 hours, you will always be in awe at how beautiful this game is.

No game in 2012 has been so emotionally involving and riveting than Telltale's The Walking Dead. While I've never read the comic, I think this is far superior than the television series. It is unlike a zombie game where you just kill an endless number of them but instead focuses on character and story. It has a very unique cell shaded comic book graphical style and the gameplay is a standard yet very interesting point and click adventure game but it's the game's emotionally dark, tragic and harsh story, unforgettable characters and the difficult decisions that you have to make are the reasons why this is the game I enjoyed playing the most in 2012.
