Yes Minister (1980)
The Best British Political satire that even Maggie T had a soft spot for and used to watch. Witty, clever, smart, thought provoking, amusing, relevant, timeless ...with a wonderful duo of Nigel Hawthorne, Paul Eddington and the lesser rated , but brilliant Derek Fowlds as the civil servant stuck in the middle between the minister and his civil servant.
A wonderful, political sit com about the trials and battles of a minister trying to pursue policies and legislation with a wilful, conservative and incredibly smart civil servant that blocked his every move. For some time, I've been told this was the way of things in Whitehall before the 1990's!

Ground Breaking satirical series using puppets and voices to portray and mimic celebrities, people in the news and most importantly; Politicians. Spitting Image was iconic because it set a new bar for comedy; that politicians lives and personalities are not exclusive to comedy. It gained popularity and was debated heavily for being too harsh in its send ups. British Prime Minister, John Major was a famous target and was forver given the media image of a grey, man eating peas because of the sketches on this show. They also did a famous, hilarious sketch of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan having a romantic affair!
A series I always remember on tv growing up in the Eighties.

Running from 1990-1998. A wonderful comedy,satire about a newsroom with journalists battling the newsroom leader, Gus Hedges to print serious journalistic articles that press issues, while he wants sensationalist stuff that will sell papers and keep the owner happy. Lots of parallels with Rupert Mudoch today or even Maxwell at the time . Incredibly well written, witty, smart and spot on.

2005 -Present Winning various awards; BAFTA's, British Comedy Awards andglowing reviews. A modern version of 'Yes Miniser' taking into account the explosion and take over of Spin Doctors in politics and in Civil Servic delivery in the late 1990's under Tony Blairs Government. I worked in party politics for a while after I graduated and can vouch that it can be like this (although politicians dont have a sense of humour)!
It doesn't quite have the edge on Yes Minister though;

Da Ali G Show (2003)
Running from 2000-2004, Ali G (Aka Sacha Baron Cohen) cleverly managed to go through nearly every political issue , duping and fooling 'clever' people along the way. (He famously fooled Labour Politician Tony Benn, into misunderstanding what he said)!
The 'bling' and clothing and language fooled people into thinking he was making a joke out of Black Culture, but he was in fact making a joke out of the system, authority and ignorance it's self. Clever stuff.

Running from 1979 -1982 and launching the careers of Rowan Atkinson, Mel Smith, Pamela Stephenson and Griff Rhys Jones. Lots of satirical sketches on celebrities, politics and news items. The show was originally aired before the 1979 General election, but was taken off for being too 'poliitical'. Gave birth to a new breed of satire where politicians were scrutinised.

Following the sordid, dirty tricks and goings on of Tory MP, Alan B'stard! It showed up how utterly chauvinist, sexist, class distinctive, unequal and elitist the Tories are and the double standards of Conservative politicians in Westminster. It really summed up the Tories in the Eighties and people made al sorts of links with real politicians (Alan Clark)!
Starring the wonderful, Rik Mayall.

With Bremners fantastic impressions of celebrities and politicians and Bird and Fortunes side sketches satirising the real complexities, hypocrisies and real questions relating to key issues and politicians, this show really hits the mark. At times accusations of poltical bias have crept in, but all satire should make people question politics and politicians and Bremners own politics is irrelevant.

Running from 1986-1988, it was a another well executed follow up to Yes Minister. Jim Hacker , (played by Paul Eddington) unwittingly, finds himself in a game of internal party politics and whitehall manipulation and becomes prime minister to Sir Humphreys delight, as he can run the civil service through the cabinet office and Number 10.
Some interesting episodes where Jim plays Humphrey at his own game and wins!

Following on from hosting Saturday Night live and The Man from Auntie, hosted the Ben Elton show. His left wing attacks and rants made him appear militant and extreme, but he got his message through and attacked the establishment.

Great list! Ahh, the nostalgia. I'm loving The Thick of It but I agree with you that Yes Minister remains the true classic with its focus on slippery mandarins rather than knee-jerk fears of incompetent spads and sinister spinners.
