Best albums of 2004

It's a concept album about witches & sounds like nothing else I've ever heard. It's one of my favorite fall/winter albums, perfect for Halloween and late nights, and it solidified Liars spot as my favorite current band.

Their first album with then-new lead singer Greg Puciato finally helped me find my way into The Dillinger Escape Plan's music. Because he has more vocal range than original vocalist Dmitri (who just screamed through every song), that allowed Dillinger to expand their range of sounds and influences to create a far more interesting album than their debut. And everything they've released from then to now has been very rewarding.
Favorite song: "Phone Home" the giraffe's rating:
Favorite song: "War All the Time" ("This Song Brought to You By a Falling Bomb" ranks 2nd)
the giraffe's rating:
If you bought & loved their debut, this one's just as great.
Favorite song: "Shreds of Boa" the giraffe's rating:
My introduction to mclusky after seeing them perform live in support of it. Shortly after, they broke up & went on to form 2 other bands (Future of the Left and Shooting at Unarmed Men). Were Future of the Left not carrying on their sound & spirit I'd really miss mclusky.
Favorite song: "forget about him i'm mint" the giraffe's rating:
Favorite song: "Surrender (A Second to Think)"
the giraffe's rating:
One of the most under-appreciated albums of the 00s.
Favorite song: "Act Right" the giraffe's rating:
Favorite song: "Ghost of Corporate Future"
the giraffe's rating:
Favorite song: "The Creature" ("The Cockroach" ranks a close 2nd)
the giraffe's rating:
As you may be aware, almost all of the music on this album is done with human voices, which makes for a unique listening experience. Apparently most people dislike MedĂșlla, but I love it for its originality (not to mention the fact that Mike Patton and Rahzel are present on a few tracks)
Favorite song: "Where Is the Line" the giraffe's rating:
APC's covers album provided the perfect soundtrack to the year Bush won re-election, and was the first to feature vocals from guitarist/songwriter Billy Howerdel. Their version of "When the Levee Breaks" is the sole weak spot (IMO), but they made every song on here their own rather than simply recording faithful versions (which requires no real talent).
Favorite song: "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?" the giraffe's rating:

Bush winning was an outrage. That guy should have his house invaded without due warrant, be thrown in a detainment facility, and be waterboarded until he sputters out what the heck was going through his head when he decided to run for president.
On eMOTIVe, "Passive" is probably my 2nd favorite song. And yeah, I don't get all the hatred for it from critics...so weird.
Haha agreed! Though I'd say until he sputters out an apology for everything he did in office.
While I don't own that Dillinger Escape Plan album, I did buy a copy of it for my girlfriend's nephew last Christmas. He's a 16 or 17 year-old fan of all things loud, but most of the stuff that he apparently listens to is new stuff that I know nothing about. So... we took it upon ourselves to put together a loud & influential care-package of sorts. NIN's Broken was also included, along with a Napalm Death cd and haha, something or another by Mayhem. Last I heard, DEP and Mayhem went over the best... go figure.
So between the last list and this one, Blood Brothers is definitely growing on me. Their one of those bands that my younger brother (who's way more hip than me) was telling me about some years ago that I (stupidly) never did anything about.
Awesome that Eyedea & Abilities made your list! Holy shit can that guy throw down some rhymes. I don't know too much of his stuff, but anything I've ever heard has been pretty impressive. Don't know if you've ever heard of Heiruspecs, but they're another great St. Paul Minnesota hip-hop act. Both MC's are awesome and their notable for being a kick-ass live 5 piece band. A Tiger Dancing is the album I own, and it's pretty damn good!
These lists deserve more time than I generally have, and likewise it's becoming pretty clear that most of these artists deserve more attention than I've ever given them.
I'm digging the tunes and digging reading about your tastes!
The first album by Kasabian self titled-..
