1. The Gladiators
seen 3 times, 1st time in 23/05/1997 in Le Mans, France

Note: My first concert. I sat the whole time in the back with my mouth wide open... It was awesome! I will never forget it. I became hooked up right away on the Reggae music which I didn't know well at the time.

2. Bushman

3. Laurent Garnier
seen twice, 1st time in 19/09/1998 at the Techno Parade, Paris

Note:
Back then, Laurent Garnier was (maybe still is?) a very famous techno DJ in France. I thought it was pretty good.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (2 ratings) 7
4. Carl Cox
seen in 19/09/1998 at the Techno Parade, Paris

Note:
Back then, Carl Cox was considered the best techno DJ in the world. His set was awesome.

The funny thing is that I was in Paris with a friend to see the Techno Parade. We totally miss the parade (I know... Stupid!) but we manage to see the big party in the Paris town center (50 000 people). It was awesome with Garnier, Carl Cox, Manu Le Malin... The most weird thing is that I lost my friend pretty early and I spent the whole party on my own and then the whole night with some total strangers in Paris trying to look for an after-party. Eventually, I slept in some total stranger's car. It may sound weird but I had a great time!

5. Israel Vibration
seen twice, 1st time in 12/11/1998 in Le Mans, France

14. Tryo
seen in 26/06/1999 at the Garance Festival in Paris, France

Average listal rating (2 ratings) 6.5
15. Lee Perry
seen twice, 1st time in 13/11/1999 in Le Mans, France

Note:
This guy is a legend. In the 70's, he produced all the biggest Reggae artists including Bob Marley. 30 years later, he is now a singer (if you can call it singing...) wearing strange clothes, smoking big joints and doing some weird stuff on stage. I was not really thrilled...

29. Derrick May
seen in 30/11/2000 in Cambridge, England

Note:
A legendary techno DJ from Detroit. Before him, there was this live band called Digital World or Digital Work and it was utter sh*t. My friends were getting restless and just wanted to leave the place. I told them to wait. And it was worth it... Finally, he started at 23.00 and the place went completely upside down. From a boring show, it became a huge party. A killer set.

Average listal rating (2 ratings) 6.5
30. The Wailers

A band from Holland quite famous there back then. One of the biggest surprise as I had never heard of them before seeing them live. The Festival had just begun and they nailed a great show. It was just very impressive.

Like Aswad above, I wasn't expecting much but he did a great show, even better than Aswad. Very impressive. The audience was also very very enthousiast and the atmosphere was great. Combined with Aswad, one of my favorite festival experience.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (98 ratings) 8.2
38. Emir Kusturica
seen at the Festival Bebop'n Roll in Le Mans, France

Note:
I really love Kusturica's movies but his music is... just Ok. When the gig was done, my buddy went to shake his hand and I just stood there, 2 meters from him, thinking "why should I shake his hands? Am I going to lie and tell him I loved his concert ?!?".
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (1 ratings) 9
39. Zenzile

One of the few female reggae singer. A great singer and a great show. It was a delight to see her both times.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (1 ratings) 9
45. David Rodigan
seen in 12/04/2002 in Le Mans, France

Note:
After Sister Carol (see above), we were supposed to see David Rodigan. He was supposed to be some big shot DJ. Whatever...We hade never heard of the guy but new experiences are always welcome. Suddenly, a guy who really looks like Homer Simpson (seriously... check the pic on the left...) comes on stage. Me and my buddies were thinking "it must be a roadie or a DJ assistant or whatever...". But NO ! It was freaking David Rodigan himself !!! So Homer Simpson is now a DJ ?!? It can't be good... Indeed, it wasn't good... it was f*cking sensational !!! The guy started to put some LPs and after 5 minutes, the place got completely crazy with people shouting, dancing, jumping all around. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G !!! Easily the most surprising show and one of the best I have ever seen.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (2 ratings) 7
46. Sizzla
twice, 1st time seen in 29/06/2002 at the Garance Festival in Paris, France

Note:
Back then, Sizzla was the biggest Reggae artist. So, I was expecting something huge and I have been waiting for years to see him. Eventually, it was...ok. The guy has a great voice but he is just shouting most of the time. A pity.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (1 ratings) 8
47. Capleton
seen in 29/06/2002 at the Garance Festival in Paris, France

Note:
One of the biggest Reggae artist in the 90's. Not bad but as Sizzla (see above) too much shouting for my taste.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (1 ratings) 8
48. U Roy
seen in 29/06/2002 at the Garance Festival in Paris, France

Note:
A pretty good show.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (192 ratings) 6.8
49. Iggy Pop
seen in 19-20-21/07/2002 at the Festival des Vieilles Charrues, Carhaix, France

Note:
I always liked his music and it was pretty cool to see him, topless and wearing jeans as usual. I don't know why but with my friend we decided to go as closed as possible... and we did it! We went to the front row. But in the last 3 meters to the stage, there were 100 people involved in this combination of heavy fighting/jumping/dancing and the temperature was like 60 degrees Celcius... I think we spent 1 minute there and then we went back a few meters into the safe zone... Still a pretty good show.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Average listal rating (440 ratings) 7.6
50. The Cure
seen in 19-20-21/07/2002 at the Festival des Vieilles Charrues, Carhaix, France

Note:
In the music department, I usually don't like anything from the 80's. This band is however the exception and I always liked their music. The crowd was huge for this concert and I remember that lots of people were shouting at them, urging them to play their hit songs and guess what ? They didn't do it!!! They mostly played some obscure songs from their new album. I though it was just awesome. Great music and great show.
johanlefourbe's rating:

Before I started to ONLY watch movies, I used to do other stuff... When I was a student, me and my buddies will go pretty often to concerts, especially Reggae Festivals.

Getting there... Actually, about 30 acts are missing here but they are too "obscure" for Listal... Maybe, I will add them in the future.

If you're curious about my other interests beside movies, please check this list : Before I ONLY watched movies...

Like 95% of these I've never heard of, but reggae is quite awesome and wow Iggy Pop? Nice!

Excellent list man. I'm a little jealous that you've seen Iggy & I haven't. Hopefully one day that will change. Love the note for Pink Floyd haha.

Great list. Lots of people I haven't heard of so very cool :)

You've seen the Skatalites 3 times to my zero! Grrr.
Posted: 2 years, 5 months ago at Dec 2 8:42
Great list!

From all these guys, I have seen only Asian Dub Foundation. That was in WOMAD 2001 in Athens. I have the same impression as you. The sound was too loud and, for this reason, a bit irritating for me. The music of the band is pretty good though.

I only know five on the list and of them I've only seen Iggy Pop :P
Posted: 5 months, 2 weeks ago at Dec 2 19:54
I have only seen one band from your list, Toots and the Maytals. I mostly went to rock concerts when I was young. For some reason, I missed the Pink Floyd concert that most of my friends attended.

I am not suprized you were disappointed with The Wailers. By this time, they have lost all the original talent that had made them so seminal. Of course Marley and Tosh were no longer with the band, but I am not sure about Bunny Wailer. Like I said, I like Reggae, but I don't follow it as closely as Rock or Country.

Michael Prophet, he sings that song, you are a no good, you are a no good for me. I love that stuff, awesome to see him live.
Posted: 1 month, 1 week ago at Apr 11 10:58
@Frank, I checked your song on your youtube. Indeed, great tune!! Michael Prophet has one hell of a voice that's for sure.
