23. The Deer Hunter (1978)

The Deer Hunter has been criticized for being jingoistic by the critic Jonathan Rosenbaum.
Waving its snout in your face, it asks you to suspend whatever precious intelligence that you have in exchange for a good cry about what nasty old Vietnam has done to poor beleaguered America.

If you view the final scene as ironic or an example of flag-waving, you can interpret the film as being anti-war or staunchly pro-war.

30. The Thin Red Line (1998)

While most war films are "anti-war," they are always anti-war from the point of view of the winning side. They say, "War is hell, and we won." Shouldn't anti-war films be told from the point of view of the losers? War was hell, and they lost. - Roger Ebert

My favorite anti-war films and watch-list.

Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, and The Fog of War aren't clearly anti-war or pro-war.

Please recommend any great antiwar or pacifist films.
★★★
Duck Soup
Peace on Earth
I'm not interested in seeing these movies:
Three Kings
A Farewell to Arms

great list but, Harakiri (1962) ANTI-WAR ????
Posted: 1 year, 1 month ago at May 10 11:37
Harakiri is critical of the Bushido (Samurai) code; according to Roger Ebert, the pacifist director also made the Human Condition trilogy critical of the way Bushido influenced Japan's actions in WWII. In the ending, when the protagonist destroys the idol of the samurais' ancestral idol, it's revealed to be completely hollow. It's not a stretch to think of Harakiri as a film criticizing military worship.

Many great choices, such as Come and See and The Great Dictator. I was about to suggest All Quiet on the Western Front but it was already there. :) What about Platoon or The Pianist?

A Donald Duck at War Short should be on this list.

Could Three Kings be considered for the list?

Godzilla. The original, uncut 1954 Japanese version, not the edited American version with Raymond Burr.

I am surprised but no Catch 22 nor A Farewell To Arms nor Lost Horizon

"I am Cuba" could be anti-war.
