1. Dragon Ball Z (1989)
Sequel to Dragon Ball (1984), its probably along with its predecessor the most popular anime worldwide. Until the end of Freeza Arc i would rate it a perfect 10, but by the end it wasn't as great as in the beginning.

2. Berserk (1997)
Great anime full of medieval battles, plot twists and most importantly great character development. Has the perfect atmosphere and OST for the plot. Its one of my favourites of all time.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 75  Average listal rating (48 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 7.7
3. Gintama (2006)
This is one of my favourite humor shows ever. Funny characters, tons of absurdity and reference comedy. The shows doesnt mind making fun of itself. In fact they love to do it! Im still hoping that they're trolling us again and the anime went on another hiatus and it's not over.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 138  Average listal rating (82 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 7.6
4. Great Teacher Onizuka (1999)
Very light but great anime. It has great morals, very funny scenes and an awesome main character. Its the type of anime that you can re-watch many times and its always fun! One of my favorites with no doubt.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 707  Average listal rating (423 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.9
5. Cowboy Bebop (1998)
It's a very original work that has one of the best soundtracks i have ever seen in a anime. Interesting characters, great fights and good plot make it a must see.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 993  Average listal rating (616 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.9
6. Death Note (2006)
Death Note has in its intelligent plot its strongest suit. The authors know exactly the formula to keep you hooked during most of the episodes. The art is very appropriate for the plot and the atmosphere of this show is great. The last third of this show was not by far as great as the first two but still watching the whole show along with the OVA - Director's Cut Complete Conclusion Rewrite: The Visualizing God - is a great experience.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 656  Average listal rating (463 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 8.6
7. Dragon Ball (1986)
An anime that marked my childhood and a very popular anime worldwide. Not as strong in the beginning as it was by the final arcs in my opinion.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 167  Average listal rating (77 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 7.8
8. Baccano! (2007)
Thi first time i watched this show i wasnt hooked and stopped watching it after a couple of episodes. But after a few weeks i gave it another chance and i don´t regret it at all. It's original, very funny (Isaac and Miria :D) and has a huge number of interesting characters. One of my favorites now.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 165  Average listal rating (82 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.8
9. Black Lagoon (2006)
A very realistic (for an anime) action show. Its has great gun fights, romance and it revolves around modern day pirates which is a very original theme. I really liked this anime, probably more than most people, but still there´s no doubt that its an above than average show.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 226  Average listal rating (99 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.9
10. Ergo Proxy (2006)
Very original art, great character development makes ergo proxy one of my favorite adventure animes. The art matches the plot and it has a great opening.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 291  Average listal rating (154 ratings) 8.6  IMDB Rating 8.6
11. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (2009)
Usually in all reviews you read about an anime there is always someone saying that the manga was better, and i usually dont really care about those comments whenever i read them. But with FMA the manga story was way better and this series proves it. FMA Brotherhood is very superior to the 2003 version and im glad they remade it.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 160  Average listal rating (63 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating 8.3
12. Monster (2004)
Monster takes you on a great journey of mistery and investigations. The character development is very good and the plot is intriguing enough to keep you hooked. There aren't enough animes of this kind in my opinion.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 551  Average listal rating (339 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.5
13. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
I dont like mecha animes very much, and the main reason is that there's a ton of them and they still keep appearing from nowhere nowadays. But Evangelion has a very deep plot that revolves around existentialism, and interesting character development and a few twists that make it a very good show.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 241  Average listal rating (139 ratings) 7.6  IMDB Rating 8.1
14. Rurouni Kenshin: Wandering Samurai (1996)
This another series of my childhood. Its my favourite samurai themed anime. The show is good overall with some great arcs and some not that great by the end. If you like the series i highly recommend the OVAs with are masterpieces in my opinion.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 424  Average listal rating (256 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 8.1
15. Elfen Lied (2004)
This anime managed to have a great impact on me somehow. The story isn't that original and the characters weren't that interesting but the way the story develops and the brutality of some scenes got me hooked. It's an anime packed with violence both physical and psychological.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 21  Average listal rating (13 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.4
16. Bakuman. (2010)
From the same creator of Death Note, this anime is about two boys that want to be successful mangakas. A great story with a simple plot, great characters and a lot of imaginative ideas for mangas. Very solid anime.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 251  Average listal rating (134 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 8.2
17. Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006)
This series was recommended to me for being similar to Death Note. I didn't find it similar at all. It has a intelligent plot, especially during the battles, interesting characters, and mechas. If you are expecting a Death Note clone, it may not fullfill your expectations. It is a very good anime overall.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 73  Average listal rating (42 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating 8.2
18. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (2008)
Second season of code geass. Epic ending!
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 70  Average listal rating (27 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 7.7
19. Steins;Gate (2011)
I never expected to like this show as much as i did when i started watching it. Its a very funny show with an interesting cast, some romance and a lot of funny scenes.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 380  Average listal rating (236 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 8.4
20. Samurai Champloo (2004)
Very original style anime with great sword fights and an interesting dynamic between the main characters. Its a very solid original anime.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 63  Average listal rating (39 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 7.7
21. BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (2004)
Solid anime about a rock band. Has a lot of musical references, a very interesting character development and a bit of romance. However it deserved better animation.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 97  Average listal rating (56 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.8
22. Eden of the East (2009)
Very good plot filled with romance, mistery and very pleasent art. The OVA is a must see after the anime.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 389  Average listal rating (248 ratings) 7.6  IMDB Rating 8.1
23. Trigun (1998)
Very good old anime with interesting plot that keeps you watching. Oldie but Goodie as they say.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 444  Average listal rating (275 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 8.4
24. One Piece (1999)
My favorite between its long-run shounens direct competitors (Naruto and Bleach). It brings you to a very brightfull pirate world with lots of funny scenes, fights and its packed with a lot of interesting characters.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 821  Average listal rating (516 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 7.7
25. Naruto (2002)
Its probably the most popular anime worldwide currently airing. Along with it's sequel Naruto Shippuuden is a very solid show that takes place in a ninja governed world. This show weakest point it's the constant interruption of the main plot by fillers that aren't even trying to be interesting.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 213  Average listal rating (144 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 8.7
26. Yu Yu Hakusho (1993)
Very good classic shounen. Has everything a shounen should have, character strengh development, good fights, enemies turned to friends and so on...Solid show for the genre.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 48  Average listal rating (28 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.7
27. Fighting Spirit (2000)
Very solid sports anime. Its probably my favorite sports anime. Very fun to watch!
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 4  Average listal rating (2 ratings) 8.5  IMDB Rating 7.1
28. Sket Dance (2011)
Funny comedy anime. It was created by a former assistant of gintama's creater and you can see some similarities on the humor. Its not as great as Gintama but it is very good and has lots of potencial to grow.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 91  Average listal rating (50 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.7
29. Fate/Stay Night (2006)
Surprisingly good! Loved the mythology and the "historical" characters. I am currently watching the prequel Fate Zero and enjoying it too.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 101  Average listal rating (67 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating 7.3
30. Gantz (2004)
Very original anime with some very graphic scenes. Ended abruptly though.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 345  Average listal rating (219 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 7.8
31. Hellsing (2001)
Not as good as the OVAs but it still has Alucard, which is one of the few vampire characters that didn't ruin vampires for me. Packed with action and bloody scenes it delivers.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 172  Average listal rating (101 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 7.7
32. Full Metal Panic! (2002)
This show has in the characters interactions its strongest points. I don't personally like mechas very much but this one got me hooked. The presence of a lot of funny scenes which originated a comedy spin-off are a plus.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 77  Average listal rating (47 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.8
33. Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (2005)
This show has in the characters interactions its strongest points. I don't personally like mechas very much but this one got me hooked. The presence of a lot of funny scenes which originated a comedy spin-off are a plus.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 53  Average listal rating (31 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 7.2
34. The Prince of Tennis (2001)
Very good sports anime. Can be way too unrealistic even for a sports anime sometimes.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 4  Average listal rating (3 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 5.6
35. Hero Tales (2007)
Judging from the ratings i enjoyed this anime more than most people. In my opinion the plot is solid, the characters are great and the battles are good. I believe this anime is way underrated since it delivers the same as some of the popular battle shounens.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 26  Average listal rating (13 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.7
36. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (2009)
Very interesting and underrated show that has on its characters its strongest suit.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 106  Average listal rating (56 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.8
37. Last Exile (2003)
Great art and very original technology. I believe it could be better since i didn't get as immersed in the plot as i could be. Still great visual experience.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 286  Average listal rating (162 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.9
38. Wolf's Rain (2003)
I have to rewatch this series because it has been to long since i watched it. Its a good fantasy show, with good characters and a bit of a phylosophical plot.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 166  Average listal rating (106 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating 7.7
39. Afro Samurai (2007)
Its a solid action anime filled with bloody sword fighting scenes. The voice acting is in English and the main character is played by Samuel L Jackson. (Btw i´m not a fan of dub versions)
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 25  Average listal rating (14 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 7.6
40. KenIchi: The Mightiest Disciple (2006)
In my opinion this series deserved more episodes than it has. As a battle shounen i think it is unappreciated since it delivers exactly the same as the popular battle shounens.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 367  Average listal rating (266 ratings) 5.9  IMDB Rating
41. Dragon Ball GT (1996)
The fact that it wasn't based on Akira Toriyama's manga may be the main reason for not being even close to the quality that DB and DBZ delivered. Still if you re a big fan of the predecessor series as I am, you'll have to watch it anyway.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 92  Average listal rating (63 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating 7.3
42. Chrono Crusade (2003)
Very nice adventure/action anime with a strong romance component. I didn't have great expectations for it, so it was a pleasant surprise when i finished watching the show.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 55  Average listal rating (30 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 7.4
43. Speed Grapher (2005)
It isnt that original nor that great but its still pretty watchable. The opening with Duran Duran's Girls on film fits the show like a glove and its a plus.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 708  Average listal rating (434 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 8.6
44. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
Its not my favourite take on the story of the Elric brothers, but its still a pretty decent anime. Its actually very good until they start deviating from the manga storyline. I would recommend FMA Brotherhood over this version, but a fan of the series should watch both.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 195  Average listal rating (96 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.7
45. Blood+ (2005)
An interesting take on vampires made this show fun enough to stick with it until the end. It's not on my top, but i definitely don't regret having watched it.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 86  Average listal rating (53 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.6
46. Hunter x Hunter (1999)
I am currently watching the remake and i expect it to be better than this first take. Its is a fairly good battle shounen with interesting characters.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 9  Average listal rating (5 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating
47. Beelzebub (2011)
A fairly watchable comedy/action anime.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 116  Average listal rating (66 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 7.7
48. Fairy Tail (2009)
Another typical modern battle shounen that didn't get me hooked so far. It has potencial but may be i'm getting too old for the genre. With better arcs it can get better.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 21  Average listal rating (17 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 7.5
49. Kaze no stigma (2007)
Good action anime with an interesting main character.
melonupyours's rating:

People who added this item 40  Average listal rating (21 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 7.7
50. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (2006)
Popular series with a very weak begging, but it gets pretty watchable after a few episodes.
melonupyours's rating:

I hope to update the list regularly. Please comment. Any suggestion based on my taste would be very welcome.

A pretty funny anime I'm sure you'd like is FLCL.
If you liked Paprika you'd probably like the psychological thriller Paranoia Agent.
Assuming you like steampunk and psychological drama, you might like Serial Expermients: Lain
If you like supernatural anime set in the past you might like Mushi-shi.
Posted: 11 months, 3 weeks ago at Jun 2 9:52
Thanks for your comment and recommendations...I will definitely watch Paranoia Agent. I dropped it after the first couple of episodes because i was not in the mood for that type of anime at that time. Same goes for Mushishi, the pace was kind of slow and i dropped it, but i will give it a second chance since it has been highly reccomended by a lot of people. Serial Experiments Lain is a maybe in a near future if i'm in a cyberpunk mood ill give it a shoot along with Ghost in the Shell. Im not sure if i would like FLCL. Thanks again!
