John Belushi-------------------->Dr. Peter Venkman
![]() ![]() The role was originally written for John Belushi if it wasn't for his untimely death. Eddie Murphy-------------------->Winston Zeddmore ![]() ![]() The role was originally written for Eddie Murphy. John Candy-------------------->Louis Tully ![]() ![]() The role was originally written for John Candy. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Eric Stoltz----------------------------------->Marty McFly
![]() ![]() Stotlz had got the part due to Fox not being available. Production had commenced (with a few scenes being shot) but it was eventually decided that he wasn't right for the part and he conflicted with the cast and crew regularly. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
James Remar------------------------>Cpl. Hicks
![]() ![]() Remar was cast as Dwayne Hicks but due to artistic differences between him and Cameron, he left the project. He is still in the final cut but its unlikely you will notice! Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Jean-Claude Van Damme--------------------->The Predator
![]() ![]() VD was set to face off against Dutch's team as a more agile ninja-like alien but due to his constant complaints about the conditions and his lack of face time, he was booted off the project. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Stuart Townsend--------------------->Aragorn
![]() ![]() Townsend had bagged the role but after the primary days on set Peter Jackson decided to re-cast with an older actor in mind. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
OJ Simpson------------------------>The Terminator
![]() ![]() O.J. was offered the role but it was deemed he was "too nice" to fit the bill of the cybernetic killing machine. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Kurt Russell------------------------>Han Solo
![]() ![]() Although there were many big names of today who went for the role of Han Solo. I think Kurt Russell was most prominent as his audition tapes are most commonly used during Star Wars documentaries. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Ryan Phillippe------------------------>Anakin Skywalker
![]() ![]() Phillippe was among the front runners for the legendary role of pre-Vader but he didn't get it. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Will Smith----------------------------------->Neo
![]() ![]() Smith was offered the role but he later turned it down. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
William Hurt----------------------------------->Dr. Alan Grant
![]() ![]() Hurt was offered the role of the protagonist originally but he turned it down without reading the book or the script. No doubt the hat wouldn't have suited him as well. Kryptic Centurion's rating:
Leonardo DiCaprio----------------------------->Patrick Bateman
![]() ![]() Initially, DiCaprio was said to be interested in playing the role and a media frenzy piped up. It was later regarded as an exaggeration and Christian Bale took over. Kryptic Centurion's rating:

Description
Easy to decipher, this is a list of actors who were offered (primarily) or cast as the adjacent character but ultimately turned it down or left the project or else. This is a work in progress, so any other movie trivia out there would be helpful to make this a comprehensive list. Thanks cherubs. To be added: -Links -Reasons -Success/Failure Rating

And I don't know whether to be sad or happy that Ryan Phillipe didn't get Anakin... Quite possibly saved his career...

how about jodie foster in panic room, she replaced nicole kidman. I think she got ill or broke a leg, not sure. She shot only few scenes before she left the movie
"The Ram" in The Wrestler - Chosen One: Mickey Rourke
Superman in Superman Returns - Chosen One: Brandon Routh
The Green Goblin in Spider-Man - Chosen One: Willem Defoe
Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon - Chosen One: Jim Carrey
Willy Wonka in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory - Chosen One: Johnny Depp
Joel Barish in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Chosen One: Jim Carrey
The world would be a sadder place
Johnny Depp:
- was to play the lead (I think he was cast, initially) in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, but then he didn't, not sure why (scheduling conflicts I believe), can't remember.
- turned down the lead in Speed
- turned down the lead in Legends of the Fall [I believe he turned down seeveral roles that went to Brad Pitt]
- turned down the role of Lestat in Interview with the Vampire
- was the first choice to play Neo in The Matrix
- was Coppola's choice to play Jonathan Harker in Dracula (don't know if he turned it down or what)
And ok that's enough Depp.
Heath Ledger was reportedly attached to Australia, but dropped out to play The Joker.
