Lectures on Literature - Vladimir Nabokov
Ok, LOLITA is a true classic but this book of Nabokov's lectures is as good. it gives you an idea of how he approached writing and how he lovingly mocked the greats while also paying homage in his lively teaching style.
War and Peace and Anna Karenia are of course two of the greatest novels/physio therapy kettle balls ever written but this story about jealousy told to a stranger on long train ride is Tolstoy's finest work as is ISAAC the story of a vagabond violinist feted by the wealthy.
Lord Jim can't hold a canoe ride by candlelight to Heart of Darkness but then few books can.
