Set during the Sengoku period among the sparring Iga ninja factions, Mumon is a carefree 16th-century mercenary whose only wish is to make money to satisfy his new bride. When the ruling Oda clan threatens the country of Iga, Mumon joins the fight against them. Yet, Mumon soon finds that there are more worthy principles for fighting beyond money or a nation.

I wasn't expecting this to be such a fun comedy drama. It's full of OTT fights, crazy set pieces and stupid slapstick with outrageous characters. Carrying the lead role of Mumon is Arashi member Satoshi Ohno who is very good. Ohno did all of the stunts in the movie by himself. The character of Mumon has a laid back way of dealing with things especially in fights. Unfortunately his life is dictated by the actions of his power hungry wife who wants wealth and this pushes Mumon into getting involved in a fight against the Oda clan who has superior numbers against the Iga. The battle scenes featuring ninjas against samurai warriors armed with guns is impressive to see. The comedy amongst the drama might be annoying to some viewers but it didn't seem to bother me. That's the director Yoshihiro Nakamura style apparently. When the movie needs to be serious though it does it perfectly. On the whole, I enjoyed this period movie. The mix of comedy and drama gels well together. If you fancy seeing a different take on the samurai genre then give this a go.

Sachio Kinugasa is a celebrity novelist who is cheating on his wife with a young editor. Sachio's wife leaves to go on a ski trip with her best friend by bus. The next morning he receives word that there has been an accident and his wife has passed away. He plays the grieving husband on television without as much as shedding a tear. The husband of his wife's best friend gets in contact with him. As he is on the road a lot with his job, Sachio is asked to look after his 2 kids.

This was a fantastic movie about loss, guilt and redemption. When the viewer gets to know Sachio at first he is an unlikable selfish and moody pig of a man. He finds relief from the guilt he feels by playing a surrogate father to the kids but even this does not resolve his unfinished business with his dead wife. He feels the best way to get over her death is to forget her but this does not sit well with the kids' father. At times the viewer feels that Sachio deserves a smack in the face such is his insulting attitude but this is the only way he can face his deep guilt. Masahiro Motoki delivers a stunning performance as Sachio whose demeanor thaws when looking after the kids. He genuinely cares for them as apparently his late wife did not want to have kids with him. After all the pain and heartache, Sachio does redeem himself by the end. A superb movie about grief but in a different way from the norm. There is no sentimentality on show here. Just a brilliant piece of storytelling about a deeply flawed man. Definitely recommended.

This adaptation of Charles Dickens' first novel might not be as good as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist which preceded it but it is still an entertaining movie to watch with a good cast led by James Hayter as Mr Pickwick. The story is of a naive old gentleman who sets off to discover England, accompanied by three equally naive members of his club and his worldly cockney valet. Nigel Patrick, future Dr Who William Hartnell and comedy actress Hattie Jacques make an appearance. This movie does not cover all of the book as it would be far too long but it covers most of the good bits and the comedy on show is funny. It might not be the most lavish of movies but the performances of the cast make up for the lack of budget. Those who have read the novel will enjoy the movie, even if is abridged.

A horse racing syndicate set up in the London district of Lambs Green by Major Hill to buy a particular race horse make the mistake of buying the wrong one. Instead of trying to sell it, they decide that it is better at being a jumper than on the flats. As it makes progress, they decide to submit the horse to run in the greatest steeple chase of them all - The Grand National!

An endearing comedy movie set in the early part of the 50's. It shows a bygone era now long gone especially with the public transport shown. The story is fun and inhabited by great characters which are acted by a cast of familiar British actors of the time. There are even cameos by the likes of Sid James and Charles Hawtrey. The plot does get rather silly near the end when the horse somehow gets into a film studio after walking off from it's stable and gets an acting role with the owners and most of Lambs Green searching for it everywhere. There's a race against time in finding the horse before the Grand National. Overall, a good nostalgic movie which will certainly raise a smile or two.

Bird Girl! (2017)
Yukina is persuaded to join the college Team Birdman Trial. It's a team that hopes to power a light aircraft into the air at Lake Biwa through pedal power at the annual Birdman Rally. The cockpit of the plane is fitted with two bicycles. As Yukina is good at racing with bikes, she's an ideal candidate for the cockpit team. When her crush Kei who is also the President of the team has an accident during a trial run of the aircraft, Yukina is asked to replace him but in doing that she has to team up with the aggressive Sakaba who doesn't like her at all.

This great sports comedy follows your usual zeroes to heroes movie. What makes it different is the subject - the Birdman Rally contest. I don't think a plot with a team trying to win the contest has been done in a movie before? It's a story which has jokes with references to the classic Haruhi Suzimiya and Crows Zero. The movie follows the team's training, failures and eventual triumph at the contest. The cast is led by the likable Tao Tsuchiya as Yukina. Her on-screen chemistry with Shotaro Mamiya as Sakiba is a large part of why the movie works so well. Their competitive and combative spirit in which both egg the other on to better themselves is great to see. Even if you're not really a sports fan, do take a look at this movie. I had a lot of fun watching it.

Despite the cannibalist name, it's not a horror movie and it doesn't have anything to do with zombies or a weirdo wanting to literally eat a pancreas! It's about a high school girl Sakura who has been diagnosed with a pancreatic terminal disease. A socially awkward boy Haruki who is in the same class happens by chance to come across her diary on the floor of a hospital whilst he is there and finds out about her illness. Thus begins a friendship between the two and how he helps her to do several things before she dies.

A sweet and moving tale about love and life and although I've seen numerous movies with similar plotlines this is still worth having a look. I liked the friendship between two polar opposites - Sakura being a popular and carefree young girl and Haruki who doesn't have any friends and is a library committee member at school. Although it might seem that this is a romantic tearjerker, it isn't. It's a lovely tale of a blossoming friendship between two young people. The movie shifts between past and present (a span of 12 years). There's a strong cast with Shun Oguri and Keiko Kitagawa appearing. The standout performer is of course Minami Hamabe as Sakura. There is a tragic side to the story near the end but not in the way you think it's going to happen. Grab yourself a box of tissues and enjoy this great movie.

Billed as a comedy, this movie is about a young woman who has been so traumatised by something in her past that she cannot smile anymore. It takes future Last of the Summer Wine actor Bill Owen as a tramp named Tim to make her smile again. Tim is asked to move in with the young woman and her family. However, on trying to dig deep into her psyche and finding out what really happened to her, she gets amnesia and forgets everybody in her life.

I'm not sure why this has been called a comedy as it isn't really funny. There are one or two humorous moments but on the whole it's more about sorting out a young woman with mental health issues. At times the movie is dreadfully dull and far too wordy. It was nice to see a young Bill Owen in this role and Elizabeth Henson is beautiful as the girl who can't smile but it's not a movie I would recommend to watch.

Anthony Quayle stars as Jim Preston who wants to leave his scatty brained wife Amy and son Brian for a younger woman Georgie who works with him. When Jim eventually tells Amy that he wants a divorce and is going to leave him, her life starts to spiral downwards. She thinks of a plan to win him back but will it be to no avail?

This is a really good drama which shows the repercussions of an extra marital affair has on a family. Yvonne Mitchell is fantastic as the wife Amy who through a mixture of grief (losing a child), loneliness and boredom has turned out into the person she is through no fault of her own. She never has time to get dressed properly hence the title of the movie. It's quite sad seeing how pathetic she becomes at trying to win back her husband's affection. Mitchell is probably the stand out performer in the movie even though Anthony Quayle is also very good. The plot, script, directing and the acting combine to make a taut drama that deserves to be seen more by people. Well worth your time and effort to seek out.

Arguably the high point of John Waters' career, this is a fun, energetic and infectious movie with a top-notch soundtrack and earnest performances from everyone involved. The story centers around Tracy Turnblad played by Ricki Lake, a "pleasantly plump" teenager who spends her afternoons watching the Corny Collins Show, where teenagers dance the most popular dances to the latest tunes. She manages to get on the show, and from there hopes to bring integration to Baltimore, Maryland. While still maintaining some of the weirdness which made John Waters (in)famous, this movie rises above campiness because of the social ideas it embraces such as racial equality. A lot of things in the movie works from the retro fashion which has been lovingly recreated/exaggerated to the choreography and music. It's not perfect by any means but if you're after a fun movie then Hairspray is for you.

The 3rd and final movie in the Outrage trilogy is just as good as the other two entries. It finds the protagonist Otomo working on the South Korean island of Jeju after being banished by the yakuza clan Hanabishi. Hanada is a young member of the clan who finds himself on the wrong side of Otomo after abusing 2 young female sex workers, killing one of his workers and refusing to pay compensation before fleeing back to Japan. With Otomo still seething that his old yakuza clan the Sanno has been taken over by the Hanabishi, he returns back to Japan to settle old scores.

If you've watched the other 2 Outrage movies, you'll know what to expect in this movie. Blood, bullets and revenge. For a lot of the first half, Takeshi Kitano's Otomo is missing from the screen as the viewer is witness to people pushing for power in the Hanabishi clan. Once Otomo returns to Japan, it's fireworks all the way as he and his friend blast their way through the Hanabishi. The bloodbath at the convention is superb. Otomo makes sure to take care of the punk Hanada until last (and what a way to go for him as well!!). The movie has a rather downbeat ending. Takeshi Kitano is excellent as Otomo and his old school yakuza trilogy has been nothing short of brilliant.

This movie is about a pivotal moment in the history of Japan - that of the Battle of Sekigara on October 21st 1600. It represents a battle in which the forces of Ishida Mitsunari from the West took on the army of the East led by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Everybody who understands a little bit of Japanese history will already know who was the victor. Tokugawa Ieyasu would unify the country and usher in the Shogunate era which would rule Japan for the next 260 years.

The movie takes it's time to set things up for the inevitable battle and shows the political machinations behind the scenes. It's quite a complex lead-up to be honest and can be a little confusing to the viewer because it jumps from various characters involved in the climatic battle. There is more attention drawn on the individuals in the losing camp rather than those in Ieyasu's. Koji Yakusho is fantastic as Ieyasu but I'm not sure if he acted at times like the buffoon he's portrayed in this movie even though we do get to see the flip side too in that of a master strategist. The main battle itself is a little disappointing as I expected it to be a bit more epic. It's still a great movie if you want to find out more about a battle that changed the course of Japan's history.

Probably the best Marvel movie ever. It is simply incredible. Two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War, the Avengers team remain a fractured group of heroes, with some completely dropping off the radar altogether. However, one day, the powerful intergalactic tyrant Thanos arrives on Earth to complete his collection of Infinity Stones, which upon acquiring all six, will allow him to control half of the known universe. With time quickly running out, The Avengers must reunite and team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to put an end to Thanos' unquenchable thirst for power.

From start to finish it is action packed, never has a dull moment and is a truly amazing achievement by everyone who worked on this movie. Thanos is a truly terrifying villain who is unstoppable. Although this is for most of the time quite a dark movie, thank God for the Guardians Of The Galaxy to lighten up the mood a bit. Every single superhero gets a chance to shine in the story which should please everyone. The CGI blew me away and as for the cast - they well and truly delivered it for me. All of them! I never expected such an emotional packed ending. I can't wait to see how things continue. All in all, Avengers: Infinity War seamlessly ties together 10 years worth of anticipation with top-notch acting, thrilling action, grandiose visuals and hilarious comedy.

Brought to life from the classic Beatrix Potter tale, this is an incredibly fun movie for all the family. The story centres on Peter Rabbit and his friends who like nothing better than stealing vegetables from their enemy Joe McGregor's garden until the day he dies from a heart attack. McGregor's nephew Thomas comes up from London to take over the house and starts a war with Peter and his friends.

Don't expect this to be a classic take on the Peter Rabbit tale, it's been updated to be a contemporary story so it's definitely different to the books but it doesn't really matter because after a while you'll grow to love this modern version. The blend of CGI and real life is stunning, and visually a treat for the eyes. There is a lot of humour in the movie which the kids will enjoy very much. The voice acting is fantastic with James Corden a good choice to play Peter ably supported by Margot Robbie and Daisy Ridley amongst others. The live action cast by Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson is also brilliant. Right from the start, this movie is a pleasure for adults and kids alike. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I'm sure you will too.

The 2nd Pacific Rim movie is set 10 years after the Pan Pacific Defense Corps stopped the apocalypse. It has a brand new cast although there are cameos from some of the original actors. John Boyega takes the lead as John Pentecost, son of the famous hero Stacker Pentecost who sacrificed his life to save the world. It's a story of Jaeger vs Jaeger as a rogue Jaeger causes massive destruction and when it is finally destroyed it doesn't have a human pilot inside but a Precursor but how can this be?

I enjoyed this movie much better than the original even though the story isn't that good although it makes more sense and isn't as confusing as the first movie. The action scenes are great and the CGI for most of the time is brilliant. The jury is still out on John Boyega as an actor. I've seen him in several movies now and I really don't rate him that high. He's OK in this movie. Same can be said to Scott Eastwood too. The rest of the cast are fine. It looks like this movie is setting up for another sequel judging by what is said before the end credits. Not too bad of a movie in the end and debutant director Steven S DeKnight did a good job. If you loved the first part then this is a must watch.

Based on the memoirs of British nurse Vera Brittain, this is the tale of tragic loss as young, idealistic men volunteer for the slaughter fields of France and Belgium during WW1 and of a young woman trying to find her way in the world. The movie boasts a fine cast with Swedish actress Alicia Vikander (of Tomb Raider fame) playing the leading role of Vera Brittain. She gives a very powerful performance. Kit Harington plays a doomed officer Roland who falls in love with Vera with Taron Egerton as Brittain's brother Edward. The movie as a whole is beautifully shot with stunning scenery shown. It may be too slow for some people but I enjoyed it.

Based on a manga and anime, this movie started out well enough but got more silly as time wore on. It's about a transfer student named Koichi who has moved into a town called Morioh where there has been a spate of mysterious deaths. He meets JoJo after he is confronted by 2 thugs demanding money for him to pass down a street. JoJo looks like a yankii with his dark clothes and eccentric hair style but he has secret powers called Stands. There are other young people with Stands who want to use their power for evil.

I've heard about this manga title for years but I wasn't that familiar with what it was all about. The first half of the movie is mostly about introducing the characters and relationships which it does reasonably well and setting up the conflict with other Stand users. The action scenes in which several characters use their Stands that look like avatars to beat the hell out of each other are good. For a Takashi Miike movie it's one of his tamer efforts to date and the story smacks of being predictable if I'm being honest. It piles on the melodrama for the climax between some of the characters which spoiled the movie for me. The location filming in the town of Sitges in Spain is great though and makes for a nice change from the landscapes of Japan. The CGI effects are decent and the cast don't do anything special to stand out. I'm sure fans of the manga/anime will enjoy this movie but it's not one I would watch again.

Shape shifting aliens have quietly taken over some humans as a prelude to an invasion but before they do that they want to learn about human beings. They use a human as a 'guide' - a person they control to do their bidding. The guide selects victims that the aliens take a human concept from them such as fear, love etc. One unfortunate man is Tatsuo who has been selected as a guide by an alien who has taken over the body of Dr Makabe. Tatsuo's wife Etsuko senses that something odd is going on with her husband and finds out the truth. But can Etsuko who is immune to the aliens' power stop them before humanity is wiped out?

If you're expecting an all action alien invasion story you've come to watch the wrong movie. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's movie is fairly interesting, has an uneven pace and is long on talky bits. The movie is based on a mini-series that aired in Japan. It definitely creates an unsettling atmosphere that something bad is about to happen at first but seems to abandon that half way through to have Tatsuo trying to break free from the aliens' power over him and a chase begins with him and his wife fleeing from Dr Makabe. This was probably the weakest aspect of the movie for me. The ending isn't that good either. The acting by the cast is just OK. I felt the movie missed a chance by not creating enough creepy moments to sustain viewers' interests and it goes on for way too long. In the end, I feel this movie was a wasted opportunity. Not one of Kurosawa's best work that's for sure.

Debutant director John Krasinki creates a gripping and original horror suspense movie in which alien creatures have taken over the planet and hunt human beings using sound as they are blind. The storyline follows the Abbott family as they live their everyday lives on a farm in the country trying to make as little sound as they can. Any sound no matter how little attracts the creature to attack.

Using little dialogue to create tension, this unique movie has won rave reviews from critics. It's clever how the director who also plays the leading male role uses visuals and sound to give you a story that at times leave you on the edge of your seat. It's Emily Blunt though that gives the standout performance and the most memorable moments in the movie. She's amazing. I can't say the movie is perfect as one explanation states that as long as there is a louder sound than the Abbotts, they are perfectly safe from the aliens. Surely they could use that to their advantage for most of the time but they don't. Just a small gripe though. All in all, it's a good exciting movie but it's not a must see.

Laurence Olivier stars as Archie Rice, an entertainer who has seen better days. Now playing to near empty halls in an unnamed Northern seaside town (I think it's either Blackpool or Morecambe), he carries on regardless thinking that the good times will come back but they never do. Archie is a relic of a bygone age but he's still a despicable man who's out to bag a young girl or use somebody for his own gains.

This movie has been touted as being one of Olivier's best movies and whilst it is very good I wouldn't say it's a classic. His performance is definitely strong and makes the viewer see how pathetic of a man Archie Rice really is until the tax man comes a calling and Rice's world finally crumbles down. The supporting cast which includes Olivier's future wife Joan Plowright and Thora Hird are also good. It might be quite a depressing movie but it's still worth watching.

A great comedy which follows the (mis)adventures of Mike, as he tries to get over the break up of his long term relationship by moving to Los Angeles to look for work as an actor. Helping him are his group of struggling actor friends including the ultra cool Trent. This movie has a lot of good moments from Trent's famous "you're so money and you don't even know it" line which has been parodied by a company in the UK for many years to a funny discussion about Martin Scorcese and Quentin Tarantino or Mike and the boys playing hockey on the Sega Genesis. At the time it was like a 20 something single man's guide on how to succeed in the dating world. It's entertaining from start to finish with terrific acting from the cast but I wouldn't say it's a classic movie as many are saying.

Jennifer Linden is a wild teenager who plays by her own rules and hangs out with other misfits at a local club. When her father marries a young French woman, she isn't too happy about it. Jennifer discovers her new stepmother used to be a stripper in Paris and uses her knowledge to try and break her father's marriage.

A great exploitation British movie about rebellion, beatniks, stripping and jive music. The highlight of the movie is no doubt the debut of Gillian Hills as Jennifer. She is sexy with genuine fire behind her eyes and an attitude to boot. A typical bad girl who hates her own father and stepmother! She drives the story's plot forward to a rather limp conclusion I thought. Alongside Hills there is Adam Faith as a teenage crooner, a small role for Oliver Reed and Christopher Lee as a sleazy strip joint owner who wants Jennifer to perform in his club. There are very daring scenes for a British movie at the time which I wasn't expecting. This movie is also notable for being John Barry's first soundtrack to a movie. His music would become more famous once he came onboard to do the James Bond movies. I liked this rebellious teen movie but the ending should have been better. Definitely worth a watch.

The debut movie from Studio Ponoc - ex-employees from Studio Ghibli who banded together to form a new company. It has all the hallmarks from Ghibli like the fantasy storyline, crisp and sharp animation, strong characters and a great soundtrack. The story is a mixture of several Ghibli features as well such as Kiki's Delivery Service and Laputa for instance. There are touches of Harry Potter with the magical castle in the sky resembling Hogwarts and the soundtrack even sounding like the Potter one at times. The movie is exciting and has several good set pieces and characters you root for. It's not a perfect movie by any means as there are flaws such as why is Mary trying to be friends with Peter all of a sudden when he hasn't been nice to her. However, the movie does a really good job of hooking the viewer in with awe-inspiring spectacle and unique visuals. Overall, a delightful movie for all ages. I'm hoping that Studio Ponoc will come up with something a bit more original for their next movie and not rely on their former employer for inspiration.

This is a low budget Japanese parody of the Power Rangers in which 5 young women with large breasts use the energy produced by them to become Sexy Rangers. They fight Queen Amorous of the Muscle Kingdom and her cronies who want the women's Pai Energy for their own nefarious use. This movie is just an excuse for the women to show off their bodies in bikinis and skimpy Ranger outfits. The fight choreography is pathetic and the special effects is poor but you're coming into watching this movie not because of that but to see the buxom girls in action. It's Z-grade stuff but it's still fairly entertaining in how well they've captured the spirit of the Super Sentai genre. The women themselves are cute and have their own 'charm' so to say!! Yes, it is silly and a little bit exploitative but you can still have some fun watching this movie.

Based on the manga and anime series, this movie is about people that cannot die that are called Ajin. They are able to 'reset' themselves if a limb is chopped off or if they've been seriously injured. The storyline is about an escaped Ajin called Kei Nagai who has been experimented on by government surgeons. He comes across another of his kind called Sato who feels that the government that wants to do harm to all Ajins should be destroyed. Sato builds a group of other Ajins with a mission to finish off the government but Nagai and the government army face off against them.

I've watched the first season of the anime and enjoyed that. This movie is quite faithful to what I saw in the anime. In this fast paced movie, there is a hell of a lot of action and violence. The fights involving the "ghosts" that the Ajin can call up to help them were fantastic. Takeru Satoh is great as Nagai with Gô Ayano also really good as the antagonist Sato. The well written storyline is backed up by a high octane music soundtrack which complements the action sequences. It ends with the suggestion that a sequel is on the cards. All in all, a blistering action movie that makes for a refreshing change from the oversaturated Hollywood superhero scene.

If you're expecting an action packed female spy movie along the lines of Atomic Blonde then you won't like this at all. It's more of a clever and well thought out political spy drama than anything else. The movie tells the story of a former female ballet dancer Dominika who is coerced into becoming a spy for her country by being taught in a school of the art of seduction and sex in order to extract information out of their target. They are called Sparrows. The movie takes it's time in establishing Dominika's story and at 140 mins it's long but I never felt disinterested by what was going on. The story is split into two: the first half goes through her training etc and the second is your usual spy double crossing shenanigans. I thought Jennifer Lawrence was excellent in the role of Dominika. Director Francis Lawrence who has worked with J-Law on numerous occasions does a great job in crafting this wonderful movie. It was entertaining and enjoyable.

This movie tells the story of a woman who has arthritis. Her family thinks she's a little bit odd but she makes a world for herself by becoming a respected and popular artist. It is hard to watch because I found Maud's life very depressing. She is physically, emotionally and financially abused by her husband. Yet she stayed remarkably resilient and positive. Sally Hawkins gives another wonderful performance as Maud alongside Ethan Hawke as her husband. Unfortunately the story is terribly slow paced and it hurts the movie. I found the first half tolerable enough but the second half was unbearable in how dull it was. This movie will have it's fans but I can't say I'll be one of them.

A below average comedy farce set in Ireland in which a once wealthy eccentric family now have to rent rooms out in their large mansion to tourists after the late owner spent all his money. There are rumours of some precious stones hidden somewhere in the grounds of the house but nobody has any idea where it could be?

I was expecting this to be quite funny seeing that Jimmy Edwards headlines the movie but it turned out to be a damp squib. It's an adaptation of a stage comedy and it looks like that as well. The poor script likes to emphasise the kookiness of some of the family's members such as an aunt who thinks she's travelling the world once she steps inside of a carriage that's in the family's lounge! I don't think I laughed at all whilst watching it which sums it all really. A very forgettable movie.

This may be your usual, typical and cliché teen flick in that the plot is more or less the same story of a not hot girl (called a Designated Ugly Fat Friend) who tries to change herself then loses her 2 best friends but finally discovers that this isn't who she is and ends up with the guy who she did not fancy in the first place. However, the real charm is within the main character of Bianca who is awkwardly funny and smart and played brilliantly by Mae Whitman. Even though there's nothing new you haven't seen before in this movie, don't let that put you off from watching it as it is a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it.

This intriguing movie is about 2 misfits living in Tokyo that find each other. Shinji is blind in one eye and works as a construction labourer. He is prone to talking shit that annoys his 3 friends. They are working on various sites to do with the Tokyo Olympics. Mika is a hospital nurse, whose duties include apologising to the families of those that have died. In the evenings she has another job in a hostess bar and that is where Mika and Shinji clasp eyes on each other. This isn't a straight forward tale of love as there are all sorts of complications but they meet at various times usually during the night to talk about their crappy lives. The viewer is given hints as to why they behave the way they do. Shizuka Ishibashi and Sosuke Ikematsu both give solid performances and I loved the cinematography which shows a lot of Shibuya and Shinjuku. I enjoyed this movie as it's not your usual sort of Tokyo love story.

I think it was the Wimbledon 1980 Mens final when I was growing up that made me into a tennis fan. It was one of the best tennis matches you ever saw between 2 rivals. On one side you had the ice cool Swede in Bjorn Borg who was chasing a 5th Wimbledon title and on the other side of the net you had Superbrat himself in the raging volcano of John McEnroe. Two contrasting people who put on a tennis show that ebbed and flowed and made it into such an exciting contest. This movie isn't just about that match. It goes beyond that into their supposed lives. The viewer is made to believe that it was Borg that had an explosive temper as a young teen tennis player. How much of this is the truth I don't really know? The acting is fantastic: Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgård and especially Sverrir Gudnason who looks exactly like Borg was in the day is really good. For tennis lovers this is a great watch, for those of you who are not into tennis or similar sports, you might still enjoy it!

This movie carries on from where The False Songstress ended with a short recap of scenes right at the beginning. It continues the SMS fight against the alien species Vajra and Ranka Lee growing in popularity as a singing sensation whilst Sheryl's health quickly deterioates after collapsing during a performance.

I wasn't as keen on this movie compared to the False Songstress. The romantic subplot surrounding Ranka, Sheryl Nome and Saotome Alto bored the hell out of me. There are several good battle scenes especially the Valkyrie dogfights and the songs which have been an integral part of the 2 movies are fine but yet I felt that something was missing in the overall plot. The lack of logic in the story doesn't help and I didn't really care for the characters. The animation though is sharp and looks great. A lackluster and boring soap opera in space is what I'd call this movie. Unless you're a big Macross fan I wouldn't waste my time on this movie.

A police officer investigating the apparent suicide attempt of his friend comes across a cocky and crooked businessman who will do anything to stop the investigation.

The first act of this movie might make you seem this is going to be a funny slapstick type police comedy but don't be deceived by this. This movie turns surprisingly dark by the time of the final act. There are some good choreographed action scenes too and some of the fist fights are quite brutal. The movie is constantly entertaining all the way through and rarely lets up. The main lead Jeong-min Hwang does a wonderful job as the detective and he steals the show in every sense. The villain Jo Tae-oh is a nasty piece of work with his smirking face. Overall, Veteran with it's blend of dark humour and stylish action is a wonderful movie and worth seeking out.

Three female gold diggers set up shop in a Manhattan penthouse, in an effort to attract wealthy husbands. This is supposed to be a comedy but the laughs are few and far between. With 3 big hitters in it's cast I expected this to be great but I was disappointed. It's only Marilyn Monroe that shines as a short sighted woman. Lauren Bacall is OK but the less said about Betty Grable with her squeaky voice and awful hairdo who is plain awful. The script is rather lame but I wouldn't have minded that if the movie had actual memorable funny lines but there isn't. In the end, this movie is a tiresome bore.

The Informers (1963)
After a bank robbery, an informer of Chief Inspector Johnno is found murdered after passing along information to the police. The criminal gang is determined to frame the Inspector and concoct a plan to make sure that he is sent to prison whilst they get away with the money.

This is a very good British crime movie with a superb turn by Nigel Patrick as the dogged C.I Johnno. The bad guys are led by a stand-out Frank Finlay, making an impression at a young age, and an incredibly slimy Derren Nesbitt. It's quite a gritty movie for it's time. I would say it's the cast that makes this movie as you have a who's who of great British actors such as Roy Kinnear, George Sewell and even an appearance by Last of the Summer Wine's Brian Wilde. The story trundles along nicely to it's conclusion where everything is wrapped up. Definitely a thrilling and dramatic movie that's worth seeing.

This is apparently based on a true story in which former hockey player and drug addict Eric LeMarque became lost on a mountain during a blizzard and had to survive for 8 days before being rescued. It combines his current situation on the mountain with numerous depressing flashbacks throughout the movie, depicting LeMarque's troubled life which doesn't really make it an easy watch. Josh Hartnett gives a good performance as Eric with Mira Sorvino as his mother. In the end it shows the real Eric LeMarque and how he turned things around after his life or death ordeal. I've seen better survival movies but this one is still worth seeing.

This movie brings the story of a couple of survivors of an unidentified contamination or radiation and the love triangle that ensues between them.

Don't expect this movie to be faithful to Robert O'Brian's book as it differs quite a lot from it. The post apocalyptic scenario doesn't really affect the plot either so there's no action scenes or anything exciting for that matter that happens. It's basically just a slow paced romantic drama with tensions simmering between the 3 characters. Margot Robbie and Chris Pine are good but I felt it was Chiwetel Ejiofor that stood out and has the most interesting character. I wouldn't say this is a memorable movie at all. It's fine for what it is but I don't think I'll be watching it again anytime soon.

Based on a popular Japanese smartphone game, this movie is about a writer Masaru Sakumoto who is struggling to write his next novel. His publisher wants him to change what he's writing currently to feature zombies instead but he has no idea how to make it work so he gives up on it. He decides to move to the countryside where he can write in peace and quiet but once there he becomes distracted by the cats that visit his backyard. He begins to buy toys and food for all of them and the love the cats give back to him gives him the ability to start writing once more.

I'm not a lover of cats to be honest so I have no idea why I wanted to watch this movie but the premise interested me so I gave it a go. It's a good movie of how the love of cats starts a change in a failing writer and gives him a much needed boost in rediscovering his talents. It's that simple a tale and you will have a smile on your face by the time the end credits begin. Atsushi Ito brings a childlike innocence to his performance as Sakumoto. I'm not sure where the rural location scenes were filmed but it looks like a lovely peaceful place to live and work. This movie will mostly appeal to cat lovers and those that enjoyed the game. The story has it's charm I'll say that for it.

A quite brilliant remake of the South Korean movie of the same name. 22 years after a string of brutal murders in Tokyo with the police failing to catch the killer, a man comes forward with a book claiming to be the murderer nicknamed the Tokyo Strangler as he no longer can be brought to trail due to a statue of limitation. He goes on a media tour taunting the police for not having caught him. The victims families which includes a police detective Makimura are outraged as they want justice. Soon after though, suspicions are aroused that the man may not actually be the killer? If he isn't then who is the killer and can Makimura find the person responsible?

This is a very engrossing murder mystery movie and the outrageous twists in the plot keeps you on the edge of your seat right to the end. I cannot say how close to the Korean original this movie is as I haven't seen it yet. This is the kind of thriller I really like so it hit all the right notes with me. The plot is insanely clever with 2 superb leads in Tatsuya Fujiwara and Hideaki Ito. Director Yû Irie keeps a fast moving pace to the proceedings and has you guessing who the actual murderer really is. It was probably around half way through the movie that I correctly guessed who the culprit was. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable movie and I can heartily recommend it to murder mystery fans.

A cool anime which takes place in 2 settings: present day Japan and the fantasy kingdom called Heartland. A young teenage girl called Kokone finds herself dreaming of being a princess in Heartland where her father has been arrested of stealing technology. However, Kokone's dreams and reality fuse together when the events that take place in Heartland seems to come true in her own real life and she must try and save her father from the clutches of a greedy corporate executive who wants to take over a giant motoring company.

This anime movie has a lot going for it with an exciting storyline that has plenty of thrills and spills for the entire family to enjoy. The intriguing plot with it's 2 settings work well especially when they both start to meld together towards the climax. There are touches of the works of Studio Ghibli in the whole proceedings which should interest many Western anime fans. The heroine in Kokone and her dream alter ego Ancien are very likable and you will find yourself rooting for her. The animation by Signal MD is excellent and no doubt the real life locations in Okayama perfecture featured here will see fans flocking to visit the area. This is a great movie with a solid plot. I really liked it.

Two murdering sisters in Kitty and Lulu have to sacrifice 5 men (with the last being a virgin) in order to resurrect their dead father. They set their eyes on 2 long time friends Jim & Alex in a bar (as one is a 29 year old virgin).

A quite amusing comedy horror which is a change as usually movies made in this genre by Britain haven't got a good track record. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised by how great it was. The cast are fantastic and there is genuine humour to be had. Gorehounds won't be disappointed either. An entertaining movie.

Penny Gold (1973)
A beautiful young woman is attacked and murdered at her home and Detective Inspector Matthews is charged with the investigation. He finds that the deceased was one of a pair of twins. The surviving twin's guardian has a very rare and expensive stamp that may have been the reason for the murder.

A so and so thriller with a lead character that seems like a watered down version of The Sweeney's Jack Regan. There isn't that much suspense to be had and apart from a good but short car chase not that much excitement either. The location filming around Windsor and it's castle looks good though and there are short cameos by Penelope Keith and Una Stubbs. Francesca Annis is gorgeous and plays the dual role of the twins Diane and Delphi. There are a couple of twists and turns in the plot which makes it slightly interesting but with a bit more oomph this should have been a lot better than what it was. As it is, this is a predictable but still watchable thriller.

In 1970's Boston, an illegal arms deal goes from bad to worse, leaving a group of low lifes with guns drawn, for an hour long shootout in an abandoned warehouse.

This movie started out quite well but after setting things up in the warehouse and all hell breaking loose, it started to lose it's appeal and it became boring. The problem with this seemingly never ending shootout, complete with guns which hold about 96 bullets, and characters who are shot multiple times, only to show no ill affects, is that it never looks real. There's not a character you care about either so that doesn't help things. A shame the great cast which includes Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson got wasted in such a movie.

One of the better examples of a British 70's sitcom getting the big screen treatment. All the cast from the classic series return apart from Richard Beckinsale who had passed away so Christopher Strauli replaced him as a new character. The movie has 3 threads running through it: that of Strauli's character moving in to share a room with Don Warrington's Philip, a boxing match between Philip and Rigsby and Denholm Elliott as an English gentlemen who is looking to steal money and win Miss Jones' heart. It's quite an amusing movie and Leonard Rossiter is on fine form as the landlord Rigsby. In fact all of the cast are given good material to work with here. It's obviously not as good as the episodes from the series itself but there is plenty of laughs to be had. Fans of the series will definitely enjoy it.

This movie feels like a watered down version of a Carry On movie and without much of the comedy as well. It's about a bunch of new navy recruits and the misadventures that takes place when they join up on a joint exercise with the American navy. The laughs are few and far between and some of it consists of one recruit being pursued by the Doberman dog of the American Navy Admiral. The laughs really dry up near the end as the plot goes way off course. The list of cameos by famous British comedians is fantastic from Sid James, John Le Mesurier, Rodney Bewes, Michael Bentine and Brian Wilde. Kenneth More is the star player in this movie and sadly this isn't his best role. I wanted to like this movie but it did go flat after a while. I would only recommend it to British comedy completists.

This is another imbecile and over-the-top cheesy 80's horror flick about demonic possession with an awfully bad script and hilarious special effects. It's about a young woman Susan suffering from a curse that killed her mother and it seems that Susan is going down the same path. Her eyes glow a darker shade of green when she's possessed and whatever poor soul she's focusing on dies a very unpleasant death. There's absolutely no logic or suspense in the script and the only thing keeping it from being an absolute stinker is the imaginative deaths that take place. I did think that it would improve for the finale but unfortunately it doesn't. It's not really worth watching as there are far better demonic possession movies around.

Based on a true story, it follows 3 friends who go on a trek in the South American jungle with a suspicious guide to find a supposed Indian tribe but things go awry when their raft capsizes on a river. On land, 2 of the men decide to walk and find civilisation whilst the other 2 build another raft and go downriver but again problems occur when both men go overboard. Yossi finds himself alone with no help and has to navigate through the deep jungle and the deadly creatures that inhabit the area and try and find his friend or some kind of help.

What an incredible story of survival this is with a great performance by Daniel Radcliffe. The story has it's mix of suspense and danger as Yoshii goes to hell and back but never gives up in the hope that somebody will come across and rescue him. The movie starts out quite slow but once Radcliffe's character Yossi is alone after being pushed down a mighty river the story comes into it's own and you find yourself willing Yossi along and praying for his rescue. The cinematography is fantastic with the lush green jungle scenes really standing out. The movie kept me glued right to the very end. I think this was one of Daniel Radcliffe's best performance of his career. Overall, it's quite a gripping survival adventure story and if you love these kind of movies I'm sure this one will keep you hooked as well.

There's been many complaints from Agatha Christie fans that this remake of the 1974 classic is poor by comparison but I disagree. This movie starring by and directed by Kenneth Branagh is a good murder mystery with a little pinch of humour added. Branagh is excellent as the master detective Hercule Poirot even with the ridiculous moustache he has! He commands the role as Poirot. Everything about the movie is good from the superb cast, script, sets, costumes etc. It's been confirmed that Branagh will return as Poirot in Death On The Nile in 2019 so this movie has been a success despite the moaners. I've never been a fan of Poirot in the movies or the TV series in the past but I certainly enjoyed this one.

The 38th Doraemon movie finds the robot cat, Nobita and his friends on a pirate ship and heading on an adventure in the Caribbean sea. Shizuka is kidnapped by the captain of a larger pirate ship with Doraemon and his friends having to travel to a treasure island to rescue her. The story is somewhat based on Stevenson's novel.

Doraemon's latest animated movie is a charming tale of heroism and reunion/forgiveness. It features excitement and comedy (mostly from a red parrot) that will no doubt entertain children and adults of all ages. There's also as expected some teaching messages of wisdom for Japanese kids on how to live their life. The young girl Shizuka is given a hefty part of the plot as she is kidnapped by a nasty bunch of pirates after they think she is the Captain's daughter Sara. The time flew by in watching this movie as it never drags and always has something to keep you interested. There was a small preview of next year's installment right after the end credits. Another belter of a movie from Doraemon.

This movie charts the highs and lows of two different people who are a part of 2 different manzai comedy acts from 2002 to 2012.

It's hard being a successful comedy double act in Japan. It's a tough long journey and only those that are lucky enough and have the material/talent manage to hit the top of the showbiz world. Whilst you may be expecting this to be a tale of zeroes to heroes it isn't and it shows the harsh realities of trying to make it big on the Japanese comedy scene. It might also make Japanese people who dream of being famous in a comedy double act to think again. Tokunaga and Kamiya whilst being rivals of sort as they are in different manzai acts become friends as we witness how their lives pan out during 10 years. It is obvious that their acts is going nowhere (although Tokunaga and his partner manage a brief stint on TV) but you continue to watch as you think well perhaps maybe a corner will be turned soon but it never does. Masaki Suda and Kenta Kiritani are great as the main players. A fascinating look into the Japanese comedy scene which you might not know about.

The small seaside town of Uobuka decides to welcome 6 strangers into the community under a mysterious government project and a young man in Tsukisue, a civil service worker is told by the town's officials to help them settle into town. He is shocked to discover through his boss that all 6 people have been in prison for murder. Soon after the 6 have come into town, a murder occurs at the harbour and Tsukisue suspects that one of the 6 is ultimately responsible. But which one of the 6 could be the culprit?

A great drama/thriller that keeps you guessing who the murderer is until the end even though you may have an inkling who it may be. All of the 6 murderers have their own agenda in the town. Some just want to forget about their past and start afresh whilst others are waiting for the right time to do something about their situation. Each of the six cons are brilliant to watch and played wonderfully by the cast whilst keeping a close eye on them all and gauging their success is Tsukisue played by pop star Ryô Nishikido. The plot drags a little bit when the town has their own festival to celebrate the deity known as Nororo but most of the time it ticks along nicely and culminates in a satisfying climax. I definitely think this is worth catching if you're into these kind of movies and I had a great time watching it.
