aka The Gelignite Gang. An American insurance investigator helps police to search for members of a criminal gang who use explosives to commit their robberies. This is an enjoyable British B-movie crime thriller from director Francis Searle who made scores of these low budget movies from the late 40's right up until the early 60's. The story has a criminal gang posing as busking musicians in the vicinity of where they want to rob. They alert their accomplices to any danger from the police by changing their tempo from slow to fast and from fast to slow again when the danger has passed. Quite an amusing scene to watch. Performances are good from the entire cast. If you get the opportunity one day to watch it be sure to give it a go.

This movie is not to be confused with the one starring Will Hay. It concerns a cockney family from London who have inherited a run-down farm from a dead uncle which comes complete with it's own housekeeper. The head of the family wants to have a go at farming even though he has no experience whatsoever whilst the rest of them only see pound signs in their eyes and want to sell everything to the highest bidder.

This is a charming fish out of water comedy based on a play led by the great Leslie Dwyer with George Cole again with a role as a spiv (but nothing like Flash Harry). It marks the first ever appearance of Edward Woodward as well. Dandy Nichols (of From Death Us Do Part) rounds up the main leads. The comedy is very gentle and has mostly the family members arguing with each other of what they want to do with the farm. It's one of those comedies to watch whilst lazing away on a wet afternoon. There's no big laughs to be had here but it's amusing seeing the city folk trying to handle country life.

A stubborn shepherd Tam refuses to sell his patch of land to the ruthless new Laird who has plans to redevelop the area for his own greedy gain. He sends his heavies over hoping to force Tam to give up the land and even threatening his woman who runs the local shop in the village.

This is a movie with a familiar tale - that of a small person taking on the might of somebody with power and money. Tagged as a family movie there are several scenes which definitely isn't child friendly when Tam is beaten up by the Laird's goons and also when Tam's dog is murdered by the same people and forcibly drowned in a river (you don't see this happening, just the aftermath when Tam discovers his dog's corpse). Bernard Hill is great as the proud traditional shepherd who refuses to be bullied around even as others in the village are swayed by the Laird's promise of making them rich. Betsy Brantley and Hill make for a likable couple and you definitely want them to win their battle. So whilst this movie and it's story aren't original, the beautiful Scottish cinematography and acting by the main cast make this an entertaining one to watch.

Millennium (1989)
Two planes collide in a mid-air crash and it's up to an investigator to find out what really happened. He stumbles upon a odd device in the wreckage that convinces him that something strange took place. A mysterious woman eventually reveals that she's from the future and has been taking people from the airplanes before the strike as the human race is dying.

What sounded like an interesting and intriguing plot on paper didn't materialise by what I saw onscreen. The science fiction and mystery elements are unfortunately made nearly worthless by the awful pacing, crappy effects, poor dialogue and worst of all, the silly romance plot which takes up a lot of the time. The look of the future is great and the scarred elders held alive in huge tubes were cool. Kris Krisstoferson and Cheryl Ladd are OK in the roles but I liked the robot Sherman better than them. The ending is terribly cheesy. The filmmakers botched this movie up big time. It could and should have been far better than this.

Michael Bentine is Horace Quilby, a kind and friendly sandwich board man who walks around London advertising a tailor shop and meeting various eccentric people of all colour and creed. It's basically a variety of sketches on various characters which are linked by Bentine - some are quite humourous (a demented sit-on mower with a mind of it's own) but others are painfully unfunny. The cast is a who's who of 60's UK comedians which includes Norman Wisdom, Harry H Corbett, Bernard Cribbins and Terry Thomas. Other people popping up is future Dr Who villain Roger Delgado as an Arabian carpet seller. The movie has been filmed entirely on location in central London and is a valuable time capsule on how things were during the time. As a gentle comedy it's a bit hit and miss but I still enjoyed it.

A young couple go camping in the Australian Outback and find an abandoned tent with no clues where the occupants have disappeared to. They soon find two local rednecks with guns have come to hunt and kill them.

Quite a harrowing survival movie although the plot has been done many times before. It doesn't mean you have to ignore this movie as it's still good. There are flashbacks to the inevitable doom of the family in the abandoned tent which includes a shocking killing of an infant boy. There are other brutal deaths at the hands of the rednecks. Harriet Dyer is great as the female heroine who goes through a horrible ordeal until she extracts her own revenge. The movie is shot well and the atmosphere is sufficiently chilling. All in all, a nasty and gritty Australian horror which although not original in it's plot is still worth seeing.

Continuing from the great anime series, the school idol group u's (spoken as Muse) travel to New York City to promote the 3rd Love Live concert in Japan. After returning back home, they find their popularity is bigger than ever but have a hard decision to make. After the third year girls graduate from school, the band must either disband for good or carry on. They also prepare to hold a big school idol concert in Akihabara with their rivals A-Rise and other up and coming school idol groups.

A satisfying conclusion to the first Love Live saga even though it continues with new characters in Love Live Sunshine. It's basically just a long goodbye to the group with the members accepting the end is nigh but realising that stopping being u's does not mean their friendship will finish. All of the idol group members get a chance to shine and there are plenty of insert songs dotted throughout the movie to tap your toes to. Don't expect any deep and meaningful message to come out from this movie. It's just a cheery and innocent movie to celebrate idols, their music and friendship with characters you can't help but root for.

American Made (2017)
Tom Cruise is back on form in this superb true life tale about Barry Seal, a man who worked for both the CIA and the Colombian drug cartels before his luck ran out in the mid 80's. This may not be a blockbuster action movie but it holds up on its own firmly with the help of great direction by Doug Liman who previously worked with Cruise on Edge Of Tomorrow. The story goes at a fair pace and never slows down from start to finish. The 2 hours flew by so quickly and you never feel bored by the storyline. Tom Cruise is fantastic and it was great watching him immerse himself in the crazy world of Barry Seal. The sets, costumes and music make the viewer feel that they are back in the late 70's/early 80's. American Made is a fascinating biopic about a larger than life character. The movie benefits greatly from Cruise's committed performance and Liman's lively direction to provide an entertaining take on an unbelievable true story.

A great kung-fu warrior Chen Wai who has beaten several rivals and has many enemies is made powerless when his hair (which can apparently create a hurricane!!) is shorn off by his girlfriend when her mother is kidnapped. Chen Wai runs away and hides in a temple where he has to wait 7 long years until his hair and power can return. Chen's enemies haven't forgotten about him and track him down for a final showdown.

This is a low budget Taiwanese kung fu actioner. It starts off pretty good but sags badly in the middle before finishing with a bang as Chen squares off against his deadly rivals. The English dubbing at times is hilarious and naturally director Godfrey Ho can't help but steal Western music to add to this movie. He uses a lot of dramatic Battlestar Galactica music here! The fight choreography is decent but the slow motion in the middle of fights doesn't help at all. It's not the greatest martial arts movie you'll ever see but it's fine if you want to while away 90 mins.

After being forced to flee London because of debts, Johnny Mansell returns to his home town to move into a flat next door to his brother Dave and his girlfriend Calico. Dave has embezzled his employers of £300. Calico suggests a plan to rob Dave's workplace and to steal enough money to cover his fraud but things go horribly wrong.

A very well made British noir movie with Diana Dors at her sizzling and sultry best as a femme fatale who comes in between the 2 brothers. The plot is tense and gripping especially after the botched robbery and the net is slowly closing in on the pair. George Baker and Terrence Morgan play the Mansell Brothers who are about as different as brothers can get. Whilst Johnny can play it cool under pressure, Dave is the more nervous and wound up with questions being asked about their whereabouts during the time of the robbery. It all culminates into a satisfying ending to the movie. Brilliant acting from the whole cast. An entertaining and interesting movie which comes recommended.

aka Soft Beds, Hard Battles. Peter Sellers is in multi character mode in this movie and playing 6 roles including Adolf Hitler. The story is set in a brothel in Paris, France during WWII with the prostitutes helping the resistance and an American and English soldier trying to save Paris from being blown up by the Gestapo. It's well known that this isn't one of Sellers' best movies and it's been criticised by many but honestly I can say it's not that bad at all. Sure, it's not a riotous comedy and laughs are few and far between (the death by farting is one instance) but for some reason I liked it. Maybe having a cast of beautiful women which includes Jenny Hanley and Rula Lenska helped! Sellers plays a couple of Germans, a Frenchman, a British officer and a Japanese Prince. Overall, an enjoyable romp but don't expect to be laughing your heads off whilst watching it.

A drunken man Ted who has been banished from England and is sent to a tiny British colony on a small island gets into trouble with the new Governor for his wild behaviour but slowly and surely starts to change over time with help from a Welsh female missionary Martha Jones. Great acting from the cast which includes Donald Sinden and Glynis Johns. Donald Pleasance would be crucified in this day and age for blacking up as an Indian man. Surprisingly enough an elephant is another star of this movie and we see a duel between him and a crocodile which ends with the elephant trampling it to death in the water. He also gets involved in the climax. The plot gradually gets serious in the second half when a cholera outbreak threatens to kill the residents of the island and it's up to Ted and Martha to find a cure. This is a pleasant enough movie with nice cinematography of an island somewhere in the Indian ocean. Good to watch on a rainy afternoon.

Set in London's Petticoat Lane Market, this slice of life movie follows the lives of several characters living and working in the area. With a great cast which includes Diana Dors and Irene Handl you'd think this movie would be a winner but somehow it never quite gels. The title refers to a child character and his quest to buy a unicorn to bring his family and friends luck. He ends up with a goat instead. The kid's performance and dialogue are a bit annoying at times. I found the storyline to be rather dull and uninteresting and didn't really care for any of the characters. The only bright spot is seeing a part of London which is now sadly gone. Rather disappointed overall.

Life (2017)
Life is an average horror/alien movie with a good cast and well shot visuals. It is not a masterpiece especially considering that there are other similar movies much better. The movie carried a good amount of intensity and suspense and was gory and terrifying at times. The performances were quite good, the cast is pretty great though so there was no surprise there but it did fall flat in writing though, not that it was poor but it's a very straight forward and rather clichéd stuff that we've seen many times even though it was indeed well done. I did like the ending though. In summary, it's a moderately entertaining watch of a story that's been told countless times before.

Seoul Station (2016)
Many think this is a prequel/sequel to the South Korean zombie blockbuster Train To Busan but it isn't even though both are written by the same person. This was made before that was a huge hit but they didn't release it as anime movies tend to do poorly in South Korea. Of course once Train To Busan was a success, this was then released to cash in. Both have a similar plot in that a zombie outbreak occurs and several people do their best to survive during the confusion and mayhem that occurs. The animation is not up to the high Japanese standards many have gotten used to seeing. Characters tend to look rather ugly but don't hold that against the movie itself. It is action packed, exciting and terrifying at the same time. There's even a social commentary about how the South Koreans tend to look down towards the homeless in the story. There are enough interesting twists to keep you engaged until the end which is rather dark. As a companion piece to Train To Busan, this is a good grim apocalyptic horror anime which is worth having a look if you enjoyed the other.

I have been an avid follower of the March Comes In Like A Lion anime since it first started last year. It's one of the best slice of life dramas I've seen and this is the 1st of 2 live action adaptation movies of it. It centres on Rei Kiriyama, a disconnected lonely teenager who lost his entire family in a car accident as a child and was adopted by his father's friend whose children despise him as he always beat them at a Japanese chess game called shogi. Now living alone, Kiriyama has grown up to be a great shogi player and his only friends are those in the shogi club until he meets the kindly Akari Kawamoto and her 2 siblings (themselves orphans after their mother died) who show him what the meaning of being a family is really about.

I found this movie to be superb. The filmmakers have captured the characters perfectly especially Rei's rival and friend Nikaido played by an unrecognisable Shôta Sometani. The first half of the movie revolves around Rei trying to find his place in society and the second half concentrates on shogi with Rei playing in the finals of the Newcomer Tournament. Whilst many might find chess to be boring, it is made to be rather gripping in this movie. Ryunosuke Kamiki is excellent as the child shogi prodigy Rei and his interactions with the Kawamoto family is sweet. I'm really looking forward to seeing the concluding part to the story and how it all pans out.

Parks (2017)
This Japanese movie was made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Inokashira Park which is situated in Kichijoji, one of Tokyo's surburbs. It's a beautiful park with it's large pond and is very popular with people. The story is about 2 young women trying to find an acquitance of one of their grandfather's. They find that person's grandson who tells them that his grandmother died recently. Upon discovering an old reel tape of a unfinished song that his grandmother had made back in the 60's, the trio decide to work together complete the song.

This is a quaint little movie revolving around the friendship of 3 young adults trying to finish a song and performing it at a music festival. One of them after falling asleep even imagines she is back in the 60's with the people that started to write the tune. There is extensive footage of Inokashira Park in Summer and some during the cherry blossom season. The song that the trio is trying to complete I wouldn't say is very good (crap lyrics to be honest) but it didn't distract me from enjoying the movie even though it has a paper thin plot. The main cast do a decent job with the material given to them but it is certainly not actress Ai Hashimoto's best work. I don't think this movie will appeal to everybody but give it a shot and see what you think.

Three women take it upon themselves to get back at their evil boss in this funny comedy. Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin make a fantastic team. There was obviously an incredible chemistry at work between them. Along with Dabney Coleman they play their fantastic characters to the hilt. There are some silly moments when the 3 women high after smoking pot imagine how they will get rid of their boss. The mix up at the hospital, though inane, is needed to keep the story going. The supporting cast has some real interesting roles as well. Elizabeth Wilson plays the office snitch and anyone who has ever worked in an office can count themselves lucky if there are only one of those in your place of work. It might not be a memorable movie but it is a lot of fun and Dolly Parton's catchy tune is wonderful. All in all, a very enjoyable 80's comedy.

Hoffman (1970)
Everybody was so used to seeing Peter Sellers act in comedies they weren't sure what to make of this movie in which he plays it dead straight as a creepy man Hoffman who blackmails his secretary Miss Smith after he finds out her fiancee has been giving company secrets away to competitors. Hoffman will keep silent about the matter if she'll agree to spend the weekend at his home.

This is a very underrated movie of Sellers and one which he wasn't too enamoured with at the time as he believed he was playing himself. He wanted to reshoot some footage but this never happened apparently. I was a little bit disturbed with this story at first but I gradually begin to warm to the character of Hoffman. A very lonely man with limited social skills and who was betrayed by his wife. He loves his young secretary from afar but is afraid to say anything to her. Sinead Cusack is fantastic and stunning as Miss Smith, who has found herself in the most baffling of circumstances. To be fair to Hoffman, he treats Miss Smith very nicely even though she was expecting the worst from him and over time she starts to warm up to him. It builds up to a heartwarming ending. This may not appeal to many Sellers fans but I enjoyed it. You get to see a different side to him.

The Servant (1963)
What an incredible psychological drama this is with a sharp script by Harold Pinter about class warfare and sexual games between a wealthy but lazy man Tony and his man servant Hugo Barrett. The two men constantly play a tug of war for power in all forms and in the end the roles have been reversed. You can cut the tension with a knife in this movie as other female characters are introduced which serve to further the rift between the two men. This movie would be absolutely nothing without the performances of it's two men, and they both deliver in equal measures. The women are both superb as well, Wendy Craig being sharp and vicious (not used to seeing her like this as she always played nice homely roles when I was growing up) and sexy Sarah Miles being naive and sensual. Dirk Bogarde is amazing as he turns more sinister and terrifying as time passes on. James Fox is also fantastic as the composed young man at the start of the movie but by the end is a shattered wreck. It's such a cracking movie and is highly recommended.

Bionic Ninja (1986)
A ridiculous action/martial arts movie by Godfrey Ho that makes no sense! It has no ninja with cybernetic implants at all! What Ho has done is take footage from another movie The Daring Kung Fu Refugee, shot new footage and made this one out of it all. And to top that he's also stolen some tunes from various Western shows (Miami Vice TV theme for instance) and incidental music from the original Dirty Harry movie. The mishmash plot is about a top technical secret film that's been stolen and a CIA agent is sent to Hong Kong to retrieve it. It won't take you long before you're completely lost with this movie because it's just jumbled mess of random scenes put together. The ninjas on show are very special as they can appear and disappear whenever they please! If you still want to watch this and decipher what's going on then I can only wish you good luck. Peter Finch in one of his best screen roles as Johnnie Byrne recently re-elected Labour member of Parliament. He's got ambitions and he'll do whatever it takes to succeed, to get to the front benches where the Labour ministers sit when they're in power. He's got a wife that he's estranged from and a mistress he's cheating on also with yet another woman.

Johnnie Byrne is such a despicable person and the viewer will have no sympathy for him whatsoever. Whether it's stirring up trouble for the Prime Minister or playing away with various women and it's thanks to Finch' talents that make Byrne such an interesting character to watch. Donald Pleasance also shines as a nasty Labour MP. At the time of it's release, people weren't aware of how things worked inside Parliament so I believed it alarmed some politicians that it showed some to be so ruthless in their activities. There are some great views of the old Euston Station before it was demolished in 1963 as well. Overall, this forgotten movie is well worth a watch if you get the chance.

Manji is a battle-hardened samurai who committed quite heinous crimes in a past life. A mysterious 800-year-old nun introduces a bloodworm into his body which will regerate/heal any damaged part of his body, thereby being cursed with immortality. In order to be freed from this eternal life, he has vowed to kill 1000 evil men. Manji crosses paths with a young girl named Asano Rin whose parents were murdered in front of her by a gang of elite fighters. He promises to help her avenge their death.

Another blood soaked production by Takashi Miike and the 100th movie he has directed. Who else is best at making ultra violent movies with superb fight choreography than him. It's a blast from start to finish and I thought the way the black and white part of the movie segued into the color portion was amazing. The movie has a story that manages to remain relatively simple to follow but still turns out to be profound because of a strong character development. All the characters have depth and are performed brilliantly by the actors and actresses involved in this movie. Kimura Takuya convinces as the bitter yet passionate samurai Manji and Sugisaki Hana impresses as the innocent yet traumatised young woman Rin. The fight scenes are quite brutal, fast and pitiless. In the end, Miike delivers another winner. Highly recommended.

Sapphire (1959)
When a young woman's body is discovered on London's Hampstead Heath, the ensuing investigation quickly focuses on racial bigotry and hatred in 1950's Britain, exposing the prejudice amongst those under investigation and those investigating.

A brilliant piece of groundbreaking British cinema now long forgotten. A little clunky and overly reliant on stereotyping by today's standards, but still a fascinating exploration of the fears and struggles inherent in a newly mixed-race society. The movie is well-scripted, and boldly directed by Basil Dearden, and it shows without flinching the true state of feeling as it was in those days. The acting is all reliable and convincing especially by the police detectives in Nigel Patrick and Michael Craig. The bottom line is that the movie is amazingly good and definitely well worth seeing.

Tax man Harold Crick one day wakes up to find his life being narrated word for word by burnt out writer Karen Eiffel. Odd thing is, Eiffel is writing an actual book where Crick just happens to be the main character. To make matters worse, she plans on killing him off as soon as she can make it through a particularly arduous stretch of writer's block.

Originality is one thing that is absent from a majority of contemporary Hollywood movies, so this one is great just for simply trying something different. I suppose it's the icing on the cake that the movie is genuinely good. Will Ferrell definitely deserves praise for his portrayal Harold Crick in what is one of his best roles. The fact that he plays it straight is even better. It's not just about him though as Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson also turn in brilliant performances. All in all, I really liked this movie, and I would definitely recommend it to friends/family.

Told in flashback before a post office van robbery takes place, the story follows 4 men and how and why they are about to commit a crime. The back story of the men are rather melodramatic and it doesn't fit well with what was meant to be a bit tougher and gripping; they are interesting enough to do the job but I must admit to feeling that they were a bit dragged out and unnecessarily long. If you can stay awake through this, you are treated to a good last 30 mins and the reason I would have liked this movie to have been all about. I won't spoil it but it is enjoyably brutal and downbeat. The cast do their best with the material given to them. The promise given to the viewer in the opening scene doesn't really deliver until the end which is a shame so it's only an average movie overall. Had the melodrama been taken out from the movie I'm sure it would have been better.

Al Gore is back 10 years on from his climate changing wake up call documentary to give an update on the fight against reversing the catastrophic polluting that humans have done to the planet. It's true that a lot of the information is rehashed from the previous movie and there's too much of Gore in this one but the overall message is still the same - we are heading for the point of no return with the health of the Earth unless governments change their policies on fossil fuel and move over to renewable energy instead. There is hope though in that it shows several cities in the US have changed to 100% renewable energy and only good can come from that. If you're not up to speed with what's happening on the fight against global warming, this is a good documentary. I don't think it was as good as the first one but still very informative nevertheless.

Gintama (2017)
This is the live action movie of Hideaki Sorachi’s long-running manga/anime series. I haven't read or seen anything about Gintama so I wasn't too sure what I was letting myself in for. For starters there's no introduction to the characters at all so you're naturally assumed to be a fan when watching the movie. No need to worry as it doesn't really hinder your viewing experience. It's a very funny OTT comedy which never takes itself seriously (as the 4th wall is often broken!) with several pokes at other manga/anime series such as One Piece, Dragonball or the Nausicaa movie. I wasn't aware that several bizarre characters inhabit the Gintama universe such as a big white duck named Elizabeth, tiger face aliens and a big puppy dog! The one thing that annoys me is the loud shouting by characters which isn't amusing at all. Shun Oguri is great as the lead character who constantly picks his nose. Masaki Suda and Kanna Hashimoto play Gintama's sidekicks. Nanao is very sexy as one of the female villains with Jiro Sato also performing well as a man with a lolita complex. It all depends on whether you embrace the silliness on show in this movie whether you'll like it or not. It put me off at first but I grew into enjoying it and it did make me laugh. A very entertaining movie.
