It's The Towering Inferno meets Die Hard! This is just a pure adrenaline rush of a movie. Dwayne Johnson is a former FBI agent turned security adviser who must rescue his family from the tallest building in the world in Hong Kong after terrorists take it over and set it on fire. This movie doesn't do anything new and I didn't really care if it copied other movies - all that mattered to me was the story of a man battling against the bad guys and the odds in trying to save his family and this movie does it well. You'll be entertained by the OTT thrills and perils faced by Johnson as he dangles several times from a burning skyscraper. The acting here is solid from all cast members, even the child actors. Overall, I've for sure seen better, more enjoyable action movies, but nonetheless, I had a really good time with Skyscraper.

I'd read so many negative reviews about this movie so I wasn't expecting much but what a pleasant surprise I got. Sure, the plot about a middle aged person going to college and getting down with the young has been done before but it was still a fun movie with a great performance by Melissa McCarthy. What's good about this comedy is even though it's a typical college frat house affair there's hardly any swearing and no nudity. It does try too hard at times to get a laugh though but I definitely thought it was funny. Apart from McCarthy, the young female cast led by Molly Gordon was pretty good. Don't listen to the negativity surrounding this movie. If you're after a fun movie that will make you smile go check it out.

After a string of below average movies, Bruce Willis is back at his best in this remake of the Charles Bronson classic. He plays Dr Paul Kersey, a surgeon who finds his wife has been murdered and teenage daughter in a coma after a vicious robbery at their home. The police have no leads so Kersey goes out to find the criminals on his own and getting a name of The Grim Reaper by the media.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a fantastic old school action movie just like you saw in the 80's. Willis is on top form as the vigilante out to find his wife's killer on the streets of Chicago. You could say it's almost as good as Bronson's original. As Eli Roth directs the movie, there's some gore involved especially in 2 scenes so don't watch if you hate the sight of blood. The revenge story is well written and the action scenes are exciting. This movie really entertains from the very first frame to the last. Those that love revenge movies should get a kick out of this one.

An old lady is brutally killed in her apartment and the only 'witness' is a blind young woman who passed the killer on the stairs. It seems the killer was after an expensive brooch that the old lady kept hidden in a jar of coffee and it's now been been inherited by the blind woman. Will the killer be back now to get the brooch with the police using the blind woman as bait?

A taut little b-movie thriller. Viewers will undoubtedly make some comparisons with the classic Audrey Hepburn thriller Wait Until Dark but this low budget movie is just as good as it. Nigel Green plays the killer and is quite menacing but it is Patricia Dainton who steals the movie as the courageous young blind woman. Madge Ryan also deserves a mention for her performance as the interfering and nosy neighbour, Mrs Finch who sets things in motion for the murder by blabbing about the brooch in the pub. Watch out for a very young Richard O'Sullivan as an angry blind boy who is getting braille lessons. All in all, I enjoyed this movie as it is well written with a wonderful cast. Definitely worth seeking out.

A movie of two halves: the first centres on a violent motorbike gang led by Kane in the seaside town of Weymouth. Kane's pretty sister becomes romantically involved with an American tourist which pisses Kane off. The gang start chasing the pair to a military base and then to a cliff face who appear to fall off but they don't. Having survived they stumble upon a cave full of young children who are locked away in a laboratory. This is what the second half is all about as Kane joins the pair in the cave. The children are all cold to the touch and part of a government experiment in which they are all radioactive. The adults try to escape with the children but the government are hot on their tails.

An interesting sci-fi movie by Hammer. It's totally unlike anything else the studios ever produced. A strange, somber and unpredictable movie that depicts a world on the brink of nuclear annihilation and the UK government using radioactive children as weapons. It leads to a fairly bleak ending for the 'heroes'. Great acting from all concerned such as a young Oliver Reed as Kane and Kenneth Cope as one of his lackeys. The movie could have worked out much better if it had only been more tense and mysterious but it's still a good watch. Give it a shot. Chances are you might end up liking it, despite all of its flaws and the wasted potential.

There's no real plot to this movie, it's an excuse to showcase the hip dixie jazz music that was happening in the UK before thankfully The Beatles hit the scene the following year and changed everything. This movie is fine if you like this sort of music but I thought it was awful. The only thing of note from this movie is it was the directing debut of Richard Lester. It's supposed to be a comedy musical but the humour on show is useless. There's a lot of artists performing which includes Chubby Checker and Del Shannon. Even a DJ legend in Alan 'Fluff' Freeman has a small role. Overall, it's a nice time capsule on the early 60's music scene in the UK and those that enjoyed that era will like this movie but sadly it did nothing for me and I thought it was terrible.

Not one of Adam Sandler's best movies truth be told. It's an extremely mediocre leaning towards bad movie. I really thought this would be fun because of Sandler starring in it but I didn't find it amusing at all. It may have been the fact that he had to tone down his humour for Disney. Another problem is that all of the characters are extremely poorly written and even the so-called bedtime stories aren't even clever or very interesting either. I'm sure kids will enjoy it though because that's who the target audience is for but those that like the usual Adam Sandler comedies will find it rather boring.

Comedy sequels are, more often than not, a disappointment waiting to happen. Thankfully this isn't the case with Super Troopers 2. It's a worthy follow up full of classic one-liners and lots of laughs. You'll be smiling through the whole movie. All of the guys from the first movie are back! New plot, new location with the same characters. The jokes are hilarious and I was laughing a lot through the movie. The filmmakers captured the essence of what made the first movie so great and put it in the sequel. If you're after a very funny comedy, definitely go and see this movie.

A pointless reboot of the Ocean's movies but this time featuring an all-female cast. It lacks the charm and charisma of the original trilogy and it doesn't come close to capturing the thrills and spills you expect in those movies either. This movie has characters that are fairly unlikable which is led by a wooden performance from Sandra Bullock. The rest of the cast aren't very good either and there seemed to be a lack of chemistry and spark between them. Only James Corden comes out of this movie with some dignity and manages to get a few laughs out of the poor script. Considering the strength of the cast, I expected this movie to be a fun experience but it was more dire than fun. All I have to say is that this half baked remake was totally unnecessary and a total waste of time. Don't bother with it.

A thrilling and tense drama as a member of the Royal Air Force relates a dream he has had about an air crash involving certain members on the way to Tokyo. Gradually, his dream starts to turn to a nightmarish reality as events start coming true. This gripping story makes comparisons between the Eastern beliefs in dreams and omens and the Western culture's dismissive attitude to the same. Superb direction from Leslie Norman, wonderful atmospheric music and great acting from the cast which includes Michael Redgrave and Denholm Elliott makes this an edge of your seat movie. It's an old fashioned suspense story worthy of a watch.

Dakota Fanning plays Wendy, a young autistic girl who runs away to Los Angeles from her communal quarters in order to submit a script for a Star Trek contest. Fanning totally nails it as a person with autism and her character Wendy is somebody you root for. Her passion for Star Trek is unprecedented and you want her to succeed in the contest. During her journey to Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles, Wendy encounters many obstacles that test her resolve from a thieving couple that steals all her money to a kindly old woman that helps her out in a convenience store. The Star Trek references are used in a meaningful way too. I thought Dakota Fanning was fantastic as Wendy and you can see how she grows as a person by following stuff from Star Trek. The movie has a lovely script with interesting characters in it. It deals with autism in a good and sensitive way. A movie to watch if you're a sci-fi fan or not.

Takashi Aoyama works for a printing company and has a bastard for a boss who rips into him for even the smallest errors and makes him work overtime without any pay. Having had enough of living, Takaashi decides to end his life by throwing himself into the path of a subway train but is saved at the last second by a man in a Hawaiian shirt. He claims to be Yamamoto, a classmate of Takashi's from elementary school. He decides he wants to help Takashi out and he succeeds at first in making him happier but after a careless error at work his life goes back to the hell it was before.

Billed as a comedy, this is definitely not one but a look at corporate life and how working for a lowlife boss can seriously damage your health. There's a mystery to the movie as to who Yamamoto really is after Takashi finds out he is lying about his identity and the weird knack he has for turning up at the right moment - is he a ghost, an angel or a con-man? His only ally at work, a woman called Igarashi is hiding a secret from him too. I found this movie had a great message about suicide prevention in that you don't have to do something drastic like killing yourself if your work is getting you down. Just quit the damn thing and find something more suited to yourself instead. Excellent acting from Asuka Kudo and Sota Fukushi as the cheerful Yamamoto. Even though parts of the movie does get a little heavy, I enjoyed what the storyline was trying to say to me.

Side Job (2017)
Miyuki Kanazawa works as a clerk for the city of Iwaki and lives with her father in temporary housing after the 2011 disaster. Her mother died in the tsunami and her father who was a farmer has lost his livelihood and now wastes time every day in a pachinko parlor and drinking heavily. Every weekend Miyuki heads to Tokyo to work as a prostitute. There is no explanation why she is doing that as she has no debt but perhaps it's to escape her boring drab life back home. Other survivors of the disaster who live near Miyuki and her father are also struggling with day to day life.

Newcomer Kumi Takiuchi is given the lead role of Miyuki and does a fine job of portraying what it is like for people who cannot go home after the disaster and are left in a state of limbo. Some still trying to come to terms with what happened. Suicide rears it's ugly head from the woman next door who is depressed thanks to the stigma surrounding her husband’s job with the decontamination programme. There are a couple of scenes where the director takes the cameras into a contaminated zone to show empty houses and shops. I liked that near the end several of the residents find a new path in their life so that they can move forward. It may not be the answer for the trauma they're going through but at least it's a new beginning for them. This is a great movie which shows another side of life for residents of Fukushima as there's no tears or melodrama here. Well worth watching.

Shell (2012)
A bleak drama set at a petrol station in the remote Scottish Highlands. 17 year Shell lives and works there with her epileptic father. The only interaction with the outside world she has is the occasional visitor wanting fuel with some making romantic overtones towards her but she won't betray the odd relationship she has with her father.

This is a slow paced movie and a character study of two people both wanting to be released from their situation. There is obviously something that has gone on in the past between the father and daughter - it definitely throws in some questions for the viewer to explain the creepy close relationship they have. It is certainly not normal father/daughter behaviour. Chloe Pirrie is good as the brooding Shell but the highlight of the movie for me is the stunning backdrop of the Scottish Highlands. The petrol station is located on a road close to a loch. There is a good ending to the story with Shell now free to escape from her situation after a long time. Overall, a complicated and rather awkward movie but definitely one to watch.

Three teenage girls make a pact and decide to lose their virginity on prom night but when their parents find out they set out to stop this from happening. This is a really good and funny raunchy comedy. It's like American Pie for the millennium generation. The laughs come from the antics of the well-meaning, but clueless parents, the ridiculous situations they get themselves into, and sexual and gross-out humour involving the girls' quest and their parents' anti-quest. Wrestler John Cena is probably the funniest out of all the adults. Even the young teens are great in their roles. Every single member of the lead cast gets a chance to shine. I really enjoyed Blockers as it is consistently funny with many laugh out loud moments. As a comedy it more than delivered so go check it out!

Rampage (2018)
A ridiculous movie based on a video game I played years ago. A deadly man made pathogen that crashes to Earth after the ISS blows up infects 3 animals. They grow to super size and develop massive strength before heading to Chicago and destroying the downtown area. The story doesn't feel like it's been thought out properly - very lazily written. It's just an excuse for scenes of destruction then again that's how the video game played out! To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this movie anyway. I usually like Dwayne Johnson movies and even though he's his usual charming self here it's definitely not one of his best work. I do like the chemistry though between Johnson's character and George the Gorilla. The cliche one liners and the OTT action scenes didn't help in my low opinion of this movie. All in all, it's just a mindless and drab popcorn flick which I'm sure the kids will enjoy. I don't think I'd watch it again.

After a gap of 14 years, the Incredibles are back. The sequel doesn't quite reach the lofty standard of the original, which would have been nearly impossible. What it does improve on is the visuals which are a treat for the eyes. The lighting, the colour and the movement are all immaculate. The story is fine but the weakest aspect of the movie is the villain. The villain is obvious and a bit predictable but despite this it shouldn't spoil your overall enjoyment of the movie. In the end it's a good movie but it isn't special. I'm not convinced Disney should have made this movie but I guess money talks.

Set in a deprived area of Liverpool, this movie is about a detective transferred to the Juvenile Liaison Dept to try and stop kids from progressing into becoming criminals once they reach adulthood. His 1st case involves a pair of Irish twins who have been stealing. He meets and falls in love with their elder sister Cathy. The twins' elder brother Johnny is the leader of a gang of hoodlums running riot in the streets. He is also responsible for arson attacks in the city and when the net starts to close after a botched arson attack on a hotel, Johnny barricades himself in a primary school classroom armed with a machine gun and a class full of kids as hostages.

This gritty drama has a fantastic angry performance from a young David McCallum as the mixed up teen Johnny. The plot could have done without the romantic part between the detective and the elder sister. What's odd is even though the movie is set in Liverpool, there is no Scouse accent heard at all between the characters! The story tries to say that rock n roll has a disruptive influence on the nation's youth making them become unruly and that the squalid environment of inner-city estates of major cities is a breeding ground for juvenile delinquency. The most memorable part of the movie is the climatic classroom scene where a bunch of terrified school children are held hostage by Johnny. There's a very good cast which includes Peter Cushing and a young Freddie Starr who would become a popular comedian in the 70's and 80's. Overall, this is a brilliant movie which is worth watching.

After being thrown out of a London jazz club for being rowdy, 4 tearaway young men break into a magicians shop to terrorise the owner before he extracts his own brand of revenge magic!

This very rare movie has a good and effective story which holds your attention. Initially an X certificate at the time of release, now it's quite tame to watch. It resembles an episode of Tales Of The Unexpected! This chiller stars Warren Mitchell, a year before hitting the big time as Alf Garnett in Till Death Us Do Part. Here he plays Emilio Dinelli, an Italian magician who is tied up to a chair in his own shop and forced to watch as the hoodlums muck about with his props and inevitably breaking one of them which sets the story up for his revenge. A young John Challis of Only Fools And Horses fame appears as one of the 4 thugs. There's a good climax to the movie as Dinelli unleashes what appears to be supernatural forces on the young men and the great twist in the last scene which shows the fate of what has happened to 3 of them. Although this movie isn't that scary, if you want to watch an interesting story give it a whirl.

I Wish (2011)
An excellent coming of age movie by Hirokazu Koreeda. Two brothers are living apart from each other due to the separation of their parents. The eldest brother Koichi wants the family to be back together again. One day, Koichi overhears that the energy released by two bullet trains passing by each other would grant wishes. Together with his 2 best friends and his younger brother and his friends who is planning to meet up with him, they decide to travel together to the point where the 2 trains intersect with each other to grant their wishes.

What a fabulous movie this is with awesome acting from the young cast. Koreeda manages to weave a simple and sensitive tale of loss of innocence of children that need to face reality instead of immature and naive dreams. The two main child leads are brothers in real life and the director squeezes out wonderfully naturalistic performances from the pair. The observation of people in real life, and attention to detail is extraordinary. Loved the cinematography as well. I Wish is a charming and lighthearted movie that is well worth watching. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Geraldine Page is superb as the mad woman Claire Marrable who is left penniless after her husband's death. She moves to the Arizona desert where she employs a steady stream of old lonely housekeepers with no family so she can murder them for their savings and then dump their bodies underneath her garden of trees. Enter Alice who goes undercover as a housekeeper to find out what happened to her friend who has mysteriously disappeared after working for Mrs Marrable.

The movie works not so much because the story (an eerie one, to be sure) is so original, but because the cat-and-mouse aspect of the story which has Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon as adversaries in a household fraught with suspicion (of murder), is what hooks the most interest in this vastly entertaining little shocker. The suspense builds slowly as the viewer comes to realise just how manipulative and cunning Mrs Marrable really is. There's no blood and guts in the movie because it doesn't need it to be honest, it works perfectly well without the gore. This movie is definitely worth seeking out.

This was David Niven's last movie before his death. Pinky Green is an American criminal released from prison in London and determined to go on the straight and narrow by getting a job as an electrician in a bank of all places. Unfortunately the boss of a gang of hoodlums named Ivan sees this as an opportunity to rob the place and forces Pinky to help him out.

This movie is an almost forgotten gem from 1979 which although in essence a comedy it was based on one of the UK's biggest ever bank heists. It was directed by Gerald Thomas, best known for the Carry On movies. It has an engaging story and it moves along at a good pace. I wish the movie didn't have a stupid Benny Hill like music throughout. I'd never heard of Richard Jordan before but he does well in the leading role of Pinky Green. David Niven as always is fabulous and plays the role with his usual charm. Elke Sommers and 70's hearthrob Oliver Tobias provide supporting roles to the pair. For a bank heist movie, there is no violence, blood or even a car chase through the streets of London. This movie just gives you a well written story that is well acted, well directed and well photographed! I wasn't expecting much from this movie but I really enjoyed it.

A simply fantastic musical with a tremendous feel-good factor and a soundtrack to die for with songs that are very catchy and stay in your head. The story is loosely based on the life of P.T Barnum who was a showman that loved entertaining people. Everything from the incredible toe-tapping music, awesome choreography to the dream filled storyline was great. I was totally immersed in it all. Hugh Jackman is perfect in the leading role of Barnum with a supporting cast that compliments him nicely. This movie is an uplifting, joyous experience that we all need now and again in our lives. Take a look at it. Guaranteed to make you smile by the end. Recommended.

Re: Born (2016)
A very well made Japanese action movie in which an ex-specialist soldier Toshiro is targeted by one of his old colleagues who sends hoards of assassins to eliminate him. Toshiro runs a small convenience store with his adopted daughter Sachi but when she is kidnapped, Toshiro realises he cannot run anymore but has to take on his old friend in order to finish things off.

The story as such isn't that important as it's the close combat knife action sequences that takes centre stage in this movie. Most of these fights take on an almost balletic display. There is one particular 30 minute segment where Toshiro and 2 accomplices are making their way up a tree ridden hill facing a seemingly innumerable amount of enemies which will leave you breathless. Tak Sakaguchi is incredible as Toshiro and his distinctive pre-fight shoulder movements lets the viewer know the enemy is in for a lot of pain and suffering. If you want a movie with a clear cohesive plot and interesting dialogue then this won't be for you but if you're after action and blood in bucketloads then you'll love it.

A crime story that starts out well enough but quickly becomes rather dull. The setup is great - a group of criminals steal bagfuls of old used money from the mail train and all this is done without any dialogue for the first 15 to 20 mins. The group is then shown celebrating their heist and living it up in an unknown foreign beach resort. The movie then goes backwards in time to how they came to plan for the robbery and the various setbacks that occur before they succeed. Most of the movie takes place in one train carriage with a lot of time wasting to fill the story out. There isn't anything in the way of thrills and peril that takes place. The cast led by American actor Lee Patterson is fine though none of them stand out in any way. As the movie wore on, my interested in the story waned and I was glad when it ended. A bit of a wasted opportunity I thought and this movie should have been a lot more exciting.

Up River (1979)
This is a low budget Western about a young man that wants to buy some land in the wilderness of British Columbia but finds opposition in the form of Kiefer, the local boss of a small town and his cronies. Kiefer tries to scare off the man by beating him up but he refuses to give up and before you know it more trouble ensues.

You're not going to find anything new in this saga of love, revenge and adventure. The plot has been done to death but I still liked it. There are some good set pieces and the acting by the cast with Morgan Stevens in the leading role is decent enough. The cinematography showing the beauty of the snow clad mountains and wilderness is fantastic. This movie passed a good 90 mins for myself and I've no regrets watching it. It's a long forgotten movie which I'm glad I checked out.

An interesting Japanese movie about a former kendo prodigy Kengo now an alcoholic who killed his father with a kendo stick via a blow to the head when he was growing up. Now as an adult, he has given up on life and wastes his time getting drunk daily. It takes an angry and troubled teenage boy in Toru Hada who is talented in kendo to bring him back to that world again in order to move on from the tragedy that occurred in the past.

Whilst the movie does drag at times, I found the build up to the inevitable showdown between Toru, the cocky teen kendo student and Kengo who despite being drunk for the majority of the time can still show how good he is with a kendo stick to be great. Kengo can see his dead father's dark and controlling streak in the young Toru and so naturally wants to beat him at kendo. The self destructive Kengo played by Go Ayano isn't a character you'll warm up to. Nijirō Murakami as Toru is ALSO good as another troubled soul who is bullied by his peers and lashes out at every opportunity given. When you get 2 characters like these squaring up against each other you'll expect nothing less than total violence. I enjoyed this modern take on the traditional ‘jidaigeki’ movie.

A fantastic step up from the previous movie with thrills aplenty which shows the franchise is well and truly alive. We all know what to expect from this franchise. Fantastic visuals, engaging characters and some excitement plus more. The story subtly deals with issues such as animal cruelty and of humans destroying the planet. The part of the movie which shows Isla Nublar being destroyed by a volcano is awesome to watch. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are charming on screen as always, but there is hardly any character development between them. Daniella Pineda and Justice Smith are good supporting characters that provide comic relief. Isabella Sermon is adorable in her debut role as Maisie Lockwood and does a terrific job. The remaining actors who played the villains are amicable but are easily forgettable, since they are very clichéd and don't bring anything new to the screen. The ending sets the scene for Part 3 which I cannot wait for. Overall, a brilliant movie for all the family.

After an earthquake, the residents of a small town start acting crazy. Quite a good disturbing little horror movie which builds up the story nice and slow. It doesn't try to do too much right away and instead it gradually reels the viewer in to the terror that's unfolding in the town. The actions of the sick townspeople are believable and creepy (such as the Sheriff killing a young boy with a machine gun and the snapping back finger scene). And some of the photography is really good, giving the viewer some striking images. It's then discovered that an unknown chemical has spilled into the town's milk supply. The ending is very downbeat. The movie might not be a masterpiece and the budget may be small but I liked it. The great cast which includes Bill Paxton do a good job. Impulse is a little seen 80's horror but it deserves to be seen more by people.

A gentle British post war comedy centering on the Huggett family that were first shown in the movie Holiday Camp. The plot has the family getting their first ever telephone and an unwelcome visitor in their female cousin Di who causes chaos wherever she goes. Standing out head and shoulders from the regulars is a pre-blonde Diana Dors who uses her sex appeal to great use on the men! The Huggett family are perfectly cast from Jack Warner as the head of the household to Kathleen Harrison as the mother who is afraid that her new telephone might go off like a bomb! The youngest daughter in future pop star Petula Clark gets to show off her vocals as well. The script for the movie was partly written by Peter Rogers who would go on in making the Carry On movies. The Huggetts were incredibly popular in their time and 2 more sequels were released the following year. I found this quite entertaining and even though it's not a laugh out loud movie, there's enough to keep everybody amused here.

A poor comedy based on a minor George Bernard Shaw play set in Roman times. It's about a hen pecked Christian man Androcles who is out on a walk with his wife and they come across a lion with a thorn in his paw. Androcles takes the thorn out and discovers the lion's name is Tommy!! Soon after Androcles is captured with other Christians and sent to Rome to fight in the Roman Coliseum.

This just isn't a funny movie even after having a decent start. There is hardly any genuine laughs here and the dialogue is horrible which makes it even more painful to watch. Harpo Marx was originally as the leading star but was replaced by Alan Young who would later gain fame as Wilbur Post in Mr Ed. A young and beautiful Jean Simmons plays his co-star. The cast is terribly wasted on a pathetic script and trying their hardest to produce useless corny humour - seeing Androcles dancing with a man in a lion costume is perhaps the dumbest thing you'll see in this movie. Not good at all.

Savaged by critics upon it's release, this movie is now touted as a lost gem that is never shown on TV these days. It is set in Germany during the Thirty Years War (1618 to 1648) in which Catholics and Protestants fought one another. Omar Sharif plays a wanderer on the run when he stumbles into a beautiful valley with a small village untouched by the conflict. Michael Caine and his band of mercenaries also discover the valley and instead of raping and pillaging the place they decide to stay until after the winter there and integrate themselves with the villagers.

What people will notice most from this movie is Caine's ridiculous German accent and the stunning location of the valley which was shot in Austria and not Germany. The beautiful soundtrack by John Barry is worth mentioning as well. Michael Caine and Omar Sharif are solid in their roles. There are a couple of good action sequences which move the plot along with also a nasty witchcraft burning scene. I have no idea why this movie was criticised so much as it has a well written story. Give it a go and I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

5 strangers awaken in an ancient dungeon with no memory of how they got there but in order to escape the place they have to team up and beat the challenges that lie ahead. This is similar to Saw with bloodletting, mysterious puzzles to solve but obviously on a cheaper budget. The cast is led by sexy Bai Ling who looks incredible for her age. Unfortunately the climax is a bit of a let down. If you've got nothing better to do, I suppose this movie is fine. It's a reasonable if instantly forgettable time filler.

Black Tide (1958)
Two swimmers (one male, one female) are attempting to swim the English Channel to France but during their attempt a thick fog drops down and the female disappears. Her body is discovered and drowning is the verdict by the police but her male co-swimmer is convinced that she was murdered having heard a speedboat close by when the fog seperated them. He starts to investigate and comes too close to the killer.

A short and briskly paced murder mystery with lovely location shots of Dover in the late 50's. Despite the story being somewhat predictable, it definitely keeps the viewers interest. Although it's a British movie, it has 2 Americans as the leading stars in John Ireland and Sheldon Lawrence. Nice to see Dad's Army star Arthur Lowe in a small role as a garage owner. The story builds to a great and exciting climax. All in all, it was a pretty entertaining thriller.

In this fast paced children's movie, a schoolboy reggae/ska group named The Pirates (similar to Musical Youth) is trying their luck out in a contest but the members don't know that their lead singer Paul is involved in a video piracy scheme run by his nasty uncle and gets one of the others in danger.

This is one of the later Children's Film Foundation movies from the mid 80's which were shown on BBC1 usually on a Friday afternoon and is a fun entertaining ride. It features a cameo role for Roger Daltrey as a producer and also Bill Treacher who would go on to play Arthur Fowler in Eastenders. Shot on location in and around Brighton, it has a very Summery feel about it. There are thrills to be had as one band member is kidnapped and locked inside an old barge whilst the baddies carry on with their business of copying music video tapes to sell on. The story's conclusion is rather rushed I felt. It's not the best CFF movie I've seen but then again this made was in the dying days of the company. Still worth a watch though.

A truly awful Japanese teen comedy about a high school girl who has confessed her love 12 times to boys in the past but has been rejected by them all. Now she's got several boys chasing after her which includes her adopted brother and her teacher.

Comedy movies like this should go straight to the bin as it is so bad. It's so unfunny and the characters are written badly. It's terrible to have an incest like plot going on with also a creepy teacher trying his best to seduce a young girl. I found it very hard to watch all of this movie. Most of the male characters are portrayed as preening, effeminate pretty-boys but this type of role has been popular over in Japan for a long time. A total waste of a movie with a throwaway plot. Utter garbage.

The concluding part in the fantastic double bill about a young Shogi player named Kuriyama - a loner who finds friendship and the meaning of family with a trio of kind sisters. There is more drama here than in the first movie as one of the Kawamoto sisters Hina is bullied at school, the sudden reappearance of their unwelcome father and Kiriyama's slump in form at shogi. Once more it faithfully follows the main plotlines in what I saw in the 2nd season of the anime and the characters in live form are spot on. The cast that's been picked to bring these characters to life have been nothing short of brilliant. It builds to a very satisfying conclusion as Kiriyama's bonds with the Kawamoto's is strengthened even more and he triumphs in one of the biggest shogi matches of his life. One of the best manga/anime adaptations I've seen. It was a joy to watch.

A young girl of 12 nicknamed Bird by her stoner mother is embarrassed during her school picnic in front of her classmates when she has her first menstrual cycle. Confused at what has has happened, she tries to ask her mother for help but she is out of her head most of the time so Bird has to figure out and deal with this new chapter in her life for herself.

It's not a special movie at all but Girl Flu has a nice coming of age story to tell. Jade Pettyjohn delivers a great performance as the lead character Bird with Katee Sackhoff as her mother. She is for a lot of the time in various stages of undress. The movie does have some predictable moments but there is some sparkling dialogue to be had between mother and daughter. The plot also touches on being bullied and first love. This movie will be very relatable for girls of Bird's age that are going through the same thing and trying to find their way in the world. Overall the movie is charming, sometimes funny and also a little bit weird.

Time Lock (1957)
Gerald Thomas is most famous for directing the Carry On movies but before that he also directed some 'b' movies and this is one of them. Based on a play by Arthur Hailey, it tells the story of a little boy who accidentally gets trapped in a Toronto bank vault and of the numerous attempts to rescue him. Robert Beatty heads the cast, which features a young Sean Connery as one of the would-be rescuers. It's a surprisingly good and tense movie with time ticking down as with the oxygen rapidly running out inside the vault the boy could be dead by the time the rescuers break in. For a movie with a simple plot, it's gripping stuff and really gets you involved. If you've 75 mins to spare, you can't go wrong with this movie.

Hirugao (2017)
The continuation of the Japanese drama series which follows 2 people that have cheated on their respective partners with each other. Set 3 years after the events of the drama, Sawa who has lost everything including her friends and family has moved to a seaside town to rebuild her life and to try and forget about Kitano by working in a restaurant. A flyer posted in her mailbox advertises a talk about fireflies that Kitano is doing very close to where she lives. After meeting each other, they find that their old feelings come back and Kitano leaves his wife for Sawa. Things seem to be settling down for the pair until she confesses what she has done to a colleague in the restaurant which turns everybody in the place against her. She also thinks that Kitano might be sneaking away on some days to be with his wife.

I never watched the drama series of Hirugao so I thought I'd be lost with this movie but it didn't make a difference. The story can easily be picked up if you've never seen the drama. The movie is basically about Sawa's inability to move on properly with her life despite moving somewhere new and Kitano not really sure if he wants to dump his wife for good or not. The most interesting character in the movie is Kitano's wife Noriko who looks normal on the outside but madness and paranoia is starting to take over. Her actions near the end of the movie prompt a tragedy. This is a nice movie with a message that illicit love cannot succeed. There is always a price to pay. Aya Ueto, Ayumi Ito and Takumi Saito deliver solid performances and the cinematography of capturing the sun-baked seaside town of Mihama in all of it's Summer glory is great.

A high school student Hibiki falls in love with her history teacher Mr Ito and confesses to him. He turns her down but she still pesters him and over time Ito starts falling for her and during one encounter on the school roof during a festival when Hibiki is wearing a wedding dress, Ito kisses her. However, another student has seen this encounter and taken pictures on their mobile. Soon the pictures go viral and Ito is asked to appear before the school board to explain himself.

Schoolgirl crushes on a male teacher is part and parcel of school life and most of the time nothing ever really happens in most occasions. It's a phase and once they start dating somebody of their own age that crush is soon forgotten. This movie couldn't have come out at a worst time with the current climate of scandals and the MeToo movement as it has a very inappropriate tale to tell. It seems there are several students in the movie who have crushes on teachers and there doesn't seem to be anybody telling them it is wrong. In fact, it is actually encouraged by fellow students which is rather stupid telling them to act on misguided impulses. I think Western audiences might feel put off by the irresponsible story that takes place but in Japan young adolescent girls love this kind of tale and lap it up gleefully. I was frankly disturbed by it all despite how good the overall production is and the fine performances of the cast.

The 3rd and final movie in the Maze Runner trilogy has a fitting end to the story but it does go on for far too long for my liking. It does though tie up loose ends and finds a way to close out the series in a surprisingly emotional send-off. It is fairly predictable at times, has some good action scenes and there are one or two genuine surprises for fans. Dylan O'Brien gives a decent performance with some good turns also by Kaya Scodelario, Aidan Gillen, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, and Rosa Salazar. This movie is far from perfect but The Death Cure was better than what I expected.

A fantastic movie by Steven Speilberg! This movie is full of stuff from when I was growing up - a journey filled with absolute nostalgia of pop culture from the 80s and early 90s. The entire time you can spot references or so called easter eggs throughout the entire movie. You get that feeling of being a kid again and reliving your childhood. The music is also cool and what better way of starting the movie than with Van Halen's Jump to let you know you're about to step back into the 80s! The CGI effects are brilliant. Even though the movie runs for over 2 hrs it never lags and the time passes by very quickly because you're enjoying yourself so much. Just go on and let this stunning and fun and loving piece of cinema wash over you. You'll be glad you did!

Thankfully better than the awful The Last Jedi, this movie is about the young Han Solo and how he came to meet Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. It also tells how he came to acquire the Millennium Falcon. The movie is solid, if a bit predictable at times. The big difference compared to TLJ is the plot has a flow to it with no stupid side-stories that make no sense and pathetic attempts at humour. There is plenty of exciting set pieces with some nice twists thrown in. The cast is great with Alden Ehrenreich doing a good job as the young Han but it is Donald Glover that shines the most as Lando Calrissian. Overall, a good movie, not quite Star Wars as you expect it as a hardcore fan, but a good action movie nevertheless and a big improvement on TLJ.

Whilst this isn't as good as it's predecessor, it is still a very funny superhero movie full of stupid physical antics and harsh banters from the merc with the mouth who does his usual thing of fighting crime, making jokes, and embarrassing criminals. The plot has Deadpool trying to save a young mutant named Russell from being killed by a cybernetic soldier from the future named Cable. To stop Cable, Deadpool forms a group with other mutants and calls the group "X-Force". Sounds familiar doesn't it and you'd be right as it does copy parts of The Terminator. The jokes are on a par with the first movie and I did find myself laughing out a lot. Ryan Reynolds delivers an amazing performance again as Deadpool and his co-stars are awesome as well. All in all, Deadpool 2 gives you exactly what you expected: comedy, action, and an overall good time. I loved it.

A scientist steals a nuclear bomb and threatens to blow up the centre of London in 7 days at noon unless the Prime Minister stops making them. This is a great little thriller worthy of Hitchcock with many location shots of London at the turn of the 50's still showing the scars of the Blitz during WWII. The story is setup for a manhunt as Central London is evacuated of all people with the army searching through all property one by one to find the missing scientist. Seeing the capital devoid of people and quiet is very eerie. Barry Jones is superb as the scientist who is fatigued and questioning why the government is developing weapons of mass destruction. The supporting cast which includes a young Joan Hickson and Geoffrey Keen (who appears frequently as a government minister in some 007 movies) do a sterling job as well. The tension is ramped up during the final 15 mins as the clock ticks down to doomsday with the scientist still at large having been clever enough to evade the military. It is edge of your seat stuff. If you want a sensible, suspense-filled, well-thought out movie you would do well by watching this movie.

Set during the Sengoku period among the sparring Iga ninja factions, Mumon is a carefree 16th-century mercenary whose only wish is to make money to satisfy his new bride. When the ruling Oda clan threatens the country of Iga, Mumon joins the fight against them. Yet, Mumon soon finds that there are more worthy principles for fighting beyond money or a nation.

I wasn't expecting this to be such a fun comedy drama. It's full of OTT fights, crazy set pieces and stupid slapstick with outrageous characters. Carrying the lead role of Mumon is Arashi member Satoshi Ohno who is very good. Ohno did all of the stunts in the movie by himself. The character of Mumon has a laid back way of dealing with things especially in fights. Unfortunately his life is dictated by the actions of his power hungry wife who wants wealth and this pushes Mumon into getting involved in a fight against the Oda clan who has superior numbers against the Iga. The battle scenes featuring ninjas against samurai warriors armed with guns is impressive to see. The comedy amongst the drama might be annoying to some viewers but it didn't seem to bother me. That's the director Yoshihiro Nakamura style apparently. When the movie needs to be serious though it does it perfectly. On the whole, I enjoyed this period movie. The mix of comedy and drama gels well together. If you fancy seeing a different take on the samurai genre then give this a go.

Sachio Kinugasa is a celebrity novelist who is cheating on his wife with a young editor. Sachio's wife leaves to go on a ski trip with her best friend by bus. The next morning he receives word that there has been an accident and his wife has passed away. He plays the grieving husband on television without as much as shedding a tear. The husband of his wife's best friend gets in contact with him. As he is on the road a lot with his job, Sachio is asked to look after his 2 kids.

This was a fantastic movie about loss, guilt and redemption. When the viewer gets to know Sachio at first he is an unlikable selfish and moody pig of a man. He finds relief from the guilt he feels by playing a surrogate father to the kids but even this does not resolve his unfinished business with his dead wife. He feels the best way to get over her death is to forget her but this does not sit well with the kids' father. At times the viewer feels that Sachio deserves a smack in the face such is his insulting attitude but this is the only way he can face his deep guilt. Masahiro Motoki delivers a stunning performance as Sachio whose demeanor thaws when looking after the kids. He genuinely cares for them as apparently his late wife did not want to have kids with him. After all the pain and heartache, Sachio does redeem himself by the end. A superb movie about grief but in a different way from the norm. There is no sentimentality on show here. Just a brilliant piece of storytelling about a deeply flawed man. Definitely recommended.

This adaptation of Charles Dickens' first novel might not be as good as Great Expectations and Oliver Twist which preceded it but it is still an entertaining movie to watch with a good cast led by James Hayter as Mr Pickwick. The story is of a naive old gentleman who sets off to discover England, accompanied by three equally naive members of his club and his worldly cockney valet. Nigel Patrick, future Dr Who William Hartnell and comedy actress Hattie Jacques make an appearance. This movie does not cover all of the book as it would be far too long but it covers most of the good bits and the comedy on show is funny. It might not be the most lavish of movies but the performances of the cast make up for the lack of budget. Those who have read the novel will enjoy the movie, even if is abridged.

A horse racing syndicate set up in the London district of Lambs Green by Major Hill to buy a particular race horse make the mistake of buying the wrong one. Instead of trying to sell it, they decide that it is better at being a jumper than on the flats. As it makes progress, they decide to submit the horse to run in the greatest steeple chase of them all - The Grand National!

An endearing comedy movie set in the early part of the 50's. It shows a bygone era now long gone especially with the public transport shown. The story is fun and inhabited by great characters which are acted by a cast of familiar British actors of the time. There are even cameos by the likes of Sid James and Charles Hawtrey. The plot does get rather silly near the end when the horse somehow gets into a film studio after walking off from it's stable and gets an acting role with the owners and most of Lambs Green searching for it everywhere. There's a race against time in finding the horse before the Grand National. Overall, a good nostalgic movie which will certainly raise a smile or two.
