Legendary British comedian Frankie Howerd's debut on the big screen. He plays a relief bus driver named Percy Lamb who has to transport a small number of passengers to another airport when fog delays all aircraft out of Heathrow airport. Unbeknown to Lamb, a robbery has taken place and gold bullion bars have been put into the bus' hold with a criminal mastermind known as The Banker being one of the passengers. On the way Percy gets lost in the bus and they stop at a small village.

A fun movie with a stellar cast which includes Margaret Rutherford and a young Petula Clark as a female bus conductor. It took me a while to recognise her though. She doesn't get to sing either! The pace of the movie is quick, but what I think really makes this movie above par is that you are never sure about who are the good guys and who are the bad guys. You will definitely change your mind multiple times, and the script does a wonderful job of leading you down one path only to change direction a few moments later. You think you know who did it, but then you are sure you are wrong. Frankie Howerd is brilliant as the bus driver and gets a lot of laughs. He's on top of his game in this movie and if you were a fan of his style of comedy then this is definitely worth watching.

This is a wonderful movie set just after WWII has ended. A female writer from London goes to the island of Guernsey in 1946 to find out more about a curiously named book society. She becomes enchanted with its idyllic village life and rural tranquility and how each member of the society has their own wartime story to tell.

The movie contains multiple sub-stories which are a montage of war-time Guernsey. They include dark themes of Nazi collaboration, the trauma of children separated from families, and uplifting themes about how literature can bring people together. The characters are warm and charming and the filmmakers capture the era perfectly. Lily James and the ensemble cast are superb. It's a shame they did not actually film on the island of Guernsey. Most of the beautiful landscape shown is of Devon and Cornwall. This is a fantastic movie of a study of survival under wartime occupation, and a tale of friendship, romance, and love of literature.

This cool and thrilling crime caper has a smooth conman by the name of Dominic organising a team of crooks to break into a safe full of money in a London Foreign Embassy with information by the Ambassador's daughter who is infatuated with Dominic. The plan is to go through an unused tunnel that runs off the London Underground. This will lead to a basement wall of the Embassy. They will knock through the wall at 4 in the morning when everyone is either gone, or sleeping.

Another example of a forgotten well made British movie that's full of suspense with a tight script and realistic characters to propel the story along. The movie begins rather slowly, taking time to explore the characters and their relationships, but quickly builds up steam in the second half. The scene of the actual robbery is limited to the last 20 minutes or so but makes for cracking entertainment, with plenty of tension to keep it brimming along. Terence Morgan and John Crawford are great but it's future Dr Who William Hartnell that shines as an old-fashioned safe cracker. All in all a very enjoyable hour and half despite the slightly predictable ending.

This great movie is about an aspiring author with OCD named Bella. She befriends her next door neighbour Alfred when she is told she will be evicted from her house if she doesn't tend to her garden. With the help from Alfred and Vernon, Bella's personal chef, they try to find a way to tend to the garden and, in doing so, discover how a garden influences them.

This movie has stunning visuals, character development and a spellbinding script that make it such a wonderful experience. The characters grow alongside each other. Alfred starts off as a grumpy and mean old man, but grows to be kind, gentle and treats Bella as though she is his daughter. Bella is introduced as timid and scared of nature, but she overcomes her fear when she befriends Alfred and learns to care for the garden. Throughout the movie, you also see Bella become less and less OCD. Jessica Brown Findley is a pleasure to watch and she has a great co-star in Tom Wilkinson as her foil. This movie overall was a breath of fresh air with it's simple storyline.

Tom Brown starts Rugby School and it isn't long before he becomes one of the victims of the school bully, Flashman. A year later, he is assigned to look after a new starter, the rather nervous Arthur. He also becomes a victim of Flashman and together with Tom's friend East they conspire to have their revenge on Flashman.

This is supposed to be one of the best depictions of schoolboy life in literature and it comes off rather well onscreen too. It looks great, beautifully shot and the period setting is suitably atmospheric and quaint. The script is very thought-provoking, with some nice charming, humorous and poignant moments, and much of the story is charming and lively. Flashman's very vindictive bullying borders on being sadistic but thankfully he gets his comeuppance near the end. John Howard Davies is great as Tom Brown with John Forrest coming very close to stealing the show as Flashman. If you like stories of schoolboys banding together against the bad guys, you'll probably like this story.

Director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg are back for their 4th testosterone-laced collaboration but this movie isn't as good as their previous efforts. CIA operative James Silva leads a small but lethal paramilitary team on an urgent and dangerous mission. They must transport a foreign intelligence asset from an American embassy in Southeast Asia to an airfield for extraction - a distance of 22 miles. Silva and the soldiers soon find themselves in a race against time as the city's military, police and street gangs close in to reclaim the asset.

After a good opening sequence, I was expecting this to be a great well-written actioner but it doesn't turn out to be the case. Mark Wahlberg spends most of his time yelling and Iko Uwais only gets to really show off his martial arts skills in an incredible hospital room fight scene. Intensity, tension, violence, gun play, fighting and chase scenes are jam-packed into a relatively short run time and this would have been OK with me had the director not used so many unnecessary zooms and shaky shots. Ronda Rousey is wasted with barely no lines and doesn't get to fight. I thought the movie was a bit of a let down and I don't think I'll watch it again.

Denzel Washington returns as Robert McCall, a vigilante-type figure and former special forces operative who begins the movie on a mission in Turkey. Things become personal for McCall when a woman who he worked with on multiple missions has been killed by thugs in Brussels. McCall attempts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

This is a great sequel. It's a solid if unspectacular follow up with thrilling and intense action scenes. The movie's action-packed finale - a climatic showdown in the midst of an incredibly rough hurricane, is thoroughly effective and satisfying. Denzel Washington is fantastic as McCall, blending a unique mix of charisma and ferocity. He is able to carry the movie on all of its levels from beginning to end. If you've seen any other "vigilante"-style action movie before, you'll be able to guess the key plot elements well before they unfold, and the movie's sole attempt at a plot twist can be guessed within the first 20 minutes. Fans of the first movie and Denzel Washington should be able to look past that and enjoy the action-packed ride.

A nice sly comedy that has similarities to Richard Pryor's Brewsters Millions. When Henry Russell dies, known during his lifetime as a practical joker, he sets his beneficiaries a task that they must achieve before they can gain a share of their inheritance of £50,000. One has to committ a crime and go behind bars for 28 days, another has to marry the first girl he has a conversation with, another has to pull a gun out and threaten his bank manager boss to give him the money from the safe and finally the last one has to become a carer at a nursing home.

This comedy is fairly amusing because the viewer watches as the various stories unfold, with varying degrees of success. One just can't get arrested, no matter how hard he tries. Some twists at the end... some are successful in their tasks, some are not. It's very entertaining. Alistair Sim and George Cole are on fine form and produce the best laughs. All of the characters learn something about life and about themselves by the end. This movie might not be a masterpiece of the sort that Ealing Studios were turning out in the 1950s but it's still worth a look.

Final Score (2018)
Billed as Die Hard In A Football Stadium, this is an entertaining and completely OTT actioner starring former wrestler Dave Bautista who gets caught up in a terrorist plot during West Ham United's final game at Upton Park. When his niece who is with him at the match is kidnapped by the bad guys, he unleashes a one-man war against them.

If you can disengage your brain and forget about the plot holes in the story then you'll have a great time watching this movie. It's got all the action you want from gun fights to hand to hand combat and ridiculous stunts to make you happy. OK, so Dave Bautista won't win any awards with his acting but he does make a good leading action man. You'll cheer him on as he takes on the nasty Russian villains. I laughed when former West Ham striker Tony Cottee who has a small cameo in the movie is shot dead by one of the baddies! Pierce Brosnan has an awful Russian accent on him. This is one of those movies to watch with your friends after coming back from the pub on a Saturday night. All good fun.

I was expecting this to be an interesting documentary about mountains but what I got instead was a showcase for extreme sports and a very irratating soundtrack. The narration by Willem Dafoe is so muddled and so shallow that it almost defies belief at times. It's complete claptrap if I'm being honest. Don't get me wrong, the footage at times is breathtaking but there's no telling which mountain ranges you're looking at. A simple text at the bottom of the screen or something by Willem Dafoe would have been nice. I didn't feel the documentary showed any understanding of mountains and why people feel the need to climb them. I think I'll watch something better by the BBC next time if I feel the need to see a proper nature documentary.

The Mimic (2017)
Disappointing Korean horror which started off well but petered off badly towards the end. Traveling into the wilderness, a troubled family trying to heal itself after their son has gone missing finds that the reclusive girl they found in the woods leads them into a series of confrontations with a deadly ghost that can mimic human voices.

South Korean horrors have eclipsed other Asian countries efforts over the past decade but unfortunately this one doesn't come up to scratch. It's a rather cliched, generic horror with jump scares. The story I felt was unappealing and I did feel myself losing interest during the second half. The characters portrayed in the movie were one-dimensional cardboard cut-outs that you formed absolutely no bond or relationship to. There was nothing scary about this movie. I know I can't expect South Korea to come up with cool and interesting horror movies all the time but this was one effort that's not really worth bothering about.

Before his wedding day, the groom uncovers a skeleton in a mud pit and is dragged underneath the mud by unseen forces. The next day the wedding goes ahead but the groom is acting a little bit strange.

This is not your typical demon possession movie. There is no deep voiced evil spirit which causes blood and carnage here. It is instead based on the Jewish dybbuk story so if you watch this movie expecting a good horror I'm afraid you've come to the wrong place. It's not a bad movie and the atmosphere is great but it just wasn't what I was hoping for. Performances are good, but the plot and characterisation are uneven. There's a bit of a sad tale to this movie as the director Marcin Wrona committed suicide whilst promoting it. If you want to see a possession story with a difference by all means give it a go.

This is a fun and energetic horror flick by Wes Craven about a young teen named Fool, a street-smart 13 year-old kid living in the ghetto. When his mother falls ill and the evil landlord hits them with an eviction notice, he hatches a plan with a family friend to break into the landlord's house and rob him of his riches. Unfortunately, Fool finds himself trapped in the house which turns out to be a fortress and uncovers a disturbing discovery about the inhabitants lurking in the basement.

Full of stunning visuals, slapstick humour and colorful performances by its cast, it feels like an 80's movie because of the outfits the characters wear to the oddball hip-hop song that closes out the movie. It helps, though, that Wes Craven is in top form with delivering some truly nightmarish visuals, aided by one great big set-piece in the house. Quintin Adams as Fool is a rarity in that he is a kid in a horror movie that isn't annoying. Quite the opposite, Fool is likable and real enough that you can't help but cheer him along. The movie is more fun than it is scary with plenty of witty one-liners. Overall, this is an immensely entertaining and offbeat little horror flick. It isn't perfect but you can enjoy a twisted, almost fairytale-like horror movie.

Eyewitness (1956)
After arguing with her husband, Lucy gets out of the house and goes to watch a movie at a cinema. Unfortunately she stumbles onto 2 men robbing the safe there and murdering the owner. Escaping onto the streets outside, she gets hit by a double decker bus and is taken to the local hospital. The two crooks follow her there, intending to finish her off as she is the only witness to watch happened.

A tension racked and thrilling crime movie set mostly at the hospital where Lucy has been rushed to with concussion. It's true there are many characters and coincidences stopping the crooks from killing Lucy off but it definitely makes it more exciting to watch. The director gives the movie a sinister atmosphere as the viewer can see that the thieves are nasty pieces of work. Donald Sinden is great as one of them. I found this movie was effective in delivering thrills and chills. It is certainly worth a look.

The 4th and final movie featuring the Huggetts family isn't as good as the first I saw a while ago. It didn't do well commercially either as the proposed Huggetts Christmas movie was scrapped soon after. The story has the family relocating to South Africa by truck when the father loses his job. With a Canadian travelling companion they travel to Algiers but soon trouble crops up which involves stolen diamonds.

It seemed by the time this movie came out, the well had truly run dry for the Huggetts. Their popularity was on the wane and the script for this movie wasn't up to scratch - hardly any comedy. Possibly audiences didn't like they'd been taken out of their suburban environment as well. The budget is cheap so the cast didn't go to Africa after all. The desert scenes were all shot in a studio. The cast led by Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison are good and teenager Petula Clark sings a few numbers. A rather poor end to a series of movies that had started brightly. Despite the family being axed onscreen, they did come back to radio 4 years later in 1953 which spawned a BBC series that ran for 9 years.

An innocent discovery of a well-preserved mummified Emperor from 200 BC China unearths a 2000 year old nightmare - a secret that should have remained buried.

This is a terrible movie financed between China and Australia. A crappy mix between Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones. It's full of cliches, predictability and muddled, convoluted storytelling. I can't tell you which is worse - the script, CGI or the acting. For the life of me I can't fathom why Kelsey Grammer signed onto this. Bingbing Li is awful as the woman searching for her lost brother. There's really nothing I can tell you which is good here. I urge you not to watch this travesty of a movie.

A pretty standard actioner about a logger who vows to protect his family against a drugs gang that has stashed it's dope on his property out in the snowy Canadian wilderness. Jason Momoa does a decent job in the leading role. This movie never out stays it's welcome even if some character development is questionable. Fight scenes look good as do some of the gruesome ways in which characters meet their demise. Momoa is not a superhero here. He bleeds and takes a beating just like the rest of us. Garret Dillahunt plays the lead bad guy and it's apparent to all he's loving it too. He's menacing, evil, a right nasty piece of work. As long as you switch your brain off and go with the flow, you'll enjoy this movie.

A great sequel that manages to retain the feel and charm of the original and further expands on it in many ways. Like in any good sequel everything is a bit bigger (some times literally). It's funnier, more action-packed, and the stakes are higher. Also the characters have the same great chemistry as before which results in some very funny and moving moments. Much like the original it perhaps is not among the greatest of Marvel movies, but it has it's own unique charm! Paul Rudd as Ant-Man evolves himself as a hero but it's Evangeline Lilly as Wasp that stole the show for myself. All in all, this movie is full of action, fun moments and character development and if you loved the original then you'll love this too.

Jason Statham takes on a gigantic 75 foot prehistoric shark in this thrilling movie. According to what I've read, the theatrical version isn't what was originally planned and there were more gory deaths supposed to happen but the filmmakers wanted to get the teen audience onboard to see this movie so they re-cut it. It's been a while since there has been a decent shark movie and this one certainly hits the mark. What you'll notice as well is that this movie is very obviously made to grab the Chinese market. The set pieces between Statham and The Meg were cool and exciting with a number of red herrings thrown in when the characters think they've killed the shark but what do you know another Meg pops up. The movie doesn't try to hide what it is, but rather embraces the absurdity of the premise and goes full throttle to becoming the Summer's most satisfying popcorn feature with a lot of tongue in cheek humour. I had a lot of fun watching this movie.

Smugglers disguised as Navy Personnel are bringing French Liqueurs into the country. Unfortunately, they decided to drop them off in a nature reserve watched over by Lady Flavia Queensway. Concerned about her beloved bird population being in danger from the transgressors, she informs Customs and Excise of the events. They send Detective Kenyon to check it out. This, in turn, leads them to a more important smuggling ring who are about to bring in a large volume of drugs. Kenyon sets out on their trail, which takes him to the south of France and closer to one of the suspects than he would like.

Admirably tense and exciting, this movie comes across as an engrossing and suspenseful thriller. The cast is solid and everybody is superb in their roles. Nigel Patrick is good in the lead role as dogged customs detective Kenyon ably supported by Jack Warner who a year later in 1955 would hit the big time with the long running police TV drama Dixon of Dock Green. Theodore Bikel has an air of menace about him as Max who is smuggling the drugs into the UK. There is some light comedy to proceedings right at the beginning and at the end but mostly this is a serious movie and a good thriller at that too. Definitely worth a watch.

Up the Creek (1958)
An early vehicle for Peter Sellers as the Chef Petty Officer of a mothballed ship HMS Berkeley whose crew has been running a laundering service for 2 years until a calamitous Lieutenant who has been making his own rockets with disastrous results is made in charge.

The late 50's/early 60's was the time in which comedy movies about the military service were made a lot in the UK and this is one example of that genre. It's an amusing farce in which the wily crew led by Sellers try to pull a fast one on their new commanding officer. The tone of this movie feels like one of the early Carry-On's. The jokes come thick and fast and the situation comedy is hilarious. Peter Sellers is probably the main reason for watching this movie but David Tomlinson is also good as the buffoon in charge of the Berkeley. I wouldn't say this is a memorable comedy but it is funny and if you're after a laugh or two you can't go wrong with it.

Fiona gets a letter from her 88 year old aunt Martha, who's lived in Paris for decades but now cries out for help. Fiona does not hesitate, says goodbye to her Canadian village in the snowy mountains, and off she goes. When she gets to Paris, her aunt Martha is not home, forcing Fiona onto the streets and into all sorts if (mis)adventures.

This is quite a bizarre comedy movie and some of the stuff that happens to Fiona is really absurd but the best thing for the viewer to do is to go along with it and as the story goes on you'll laugh at ridiculousness of it all. The two main stars in Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel also co-directed, co-produced and co-wrote the movie. They use a physical and visual kind of humour that the French comedian Jacques Tati did a long time ago. I didn't think I was going to like it at first but it grew on me and I did laugh out loud several times. Naturally the views of Paris during the day and night is stunning to see. I'm sure this movie will bring a smile to your face.

This is a brilliant satire on what would happen in the future if stupid people ran the world. The movie tells the story of two people who take part in a top-secret military human hibernation experiment, only to awaken 500 years later where everything is dumbed down and laziness runs rampant. The scary thing about this movie is what's shown in it is starting to come true. Dumb people are definitely breeding far quicker than intelligent ones and reality TV stars have more respect than actual scientists and doctors. Fox tried to bury this movie as it did not want to offend the corporate whores of the world. I found the movie very funny but it was also troubling as well. I guess director Mike Judge had an idea of how our future was shaping up to be. If you haven't seen this movie yet, by all means do so and heed it as a warning.

Whilst on holiday in Italy with his auntie, Tim Brett finds she's been murdered where they were supposed to meet. He believes some sort of peculiar conspiracy behind the murder of his rich aunt and he goes about his way to prove it back in London, except he gets his apartment broken into, strange messages and cackling laughter mysteriously appear on his tape recorder, and someone appears to have sent him a warning letter written on his own paper with his own typewriter. The police don't believe him as he's a recovering drug addict.

An enjoyable thriller about a man slowly losing his grip on reality. Are these things really happening to him or is he back on the hard stuff and all of this is a drug induced nightmare? The story cleverly builds an atmosphere of justifiable paranoia with Brett visibly feeling trapped and scared and because of his behaviour nobody believes him. David Hemmings carries the entire movie. He's great as Tim Brett, a regular guy who gets in over his head and slowly begins to lose his mind. There are appearances from Yootha Joyce, Patricia Hayes and Arthur Lowe. The movie gets more exciting as it goes along and it all boils down to a good ending that provides a nice twist. I was glad I saw this rather obscure movie.

A locksmith who breaks into a jewellery shop safe and steals £60k worth of diamonds finds himself on the run from the police and a gang of criminals when his girlfriend double crosses him. Staying with 2 sisters, one of them reports him to the gang leader whilst the other helps him to stowaway on a removal van that is going to a place in the countryside but all the while the criminal gang is on his tail.

A predictable but watchable thriller from b-movie specialists Butchers Film Distributors. You sort of know what to expect when watching movies from them: double crosses, lovely women, a wronged person and some action. Don't expect anything different from the norm here! The only fight in the movie is poorly choreographed and looks terrible and rather amateurish. There are some decent performances in this movie notably from Dorinda Stevens and Felicity Young who work well together as the sisters who are two completely different personalities. Spencer Teakle is the locksmith on the run. All in all, this movie has little to set it apart from the countless number of British b-pics of that time but thanks to a few good performances it is definitely worth checking out.

At the end of the 2nd World War, a stiff-necked British Army Major is in charge of displaced refugees with the assistance of a Slav translator who is in reality a Russian deserter. This starts out as a bit of a comedy but the laughs soon dry out. The story is a bit of a love/hate relationship between the British and the Soviet troops whose camps are next to each other in Austria. David Niven tops the bill and who better to play a uniformed officer than him. He was well used to it by this time in his career. Topol plays the sly and wily translator who is playing both armies against each other and last but not least there's John Hurt as the rather wet officer Pilkington. As the movie wore on it got less and less interesting and I got rather bored by the finish. The only good thing about the movie is the stunning locations that were filmed in Austria. Not a movie I'd recommend to be honest.

A romcom about an overachieving blind man, and his under-appreciated brother, that both fall for the same woman. The movie is very darkly comedic, in a clever way. Kudos to writer/director Sophie Goodhart for creating a story with a difference in that something good happens to two guilty, self-loathing characters. Robbie, the blind brother of the title makes a wonderfully heroic antagonist, whose capability and determination the viewer slowly comes to dislike more and more as the story unfolds. All 3 leads are great especially Jenny Rose. The movie itself is short, engaging, maybe a tiny bit predictable but ultimately leaves you with a smile.

A well done Western horror about a tribe of cave dwelling cannibalistic savages who kidnap a couple of people from a small town. A rescue expedition of 4 men which includes the town's Sheriff and his Deputy go after the kidnappers. The first half of the movie is a great character drama as it follows the group of 4 for a few day and nights as they travel to where the savages are living. Some viewers might have a problem with the pacing in the first half as not that much takes place and it is a bit slow but gore hounds will enjoy the second half where the horror and action element really takes off. The men are unprepared for the level of brutal violence that befalls them. Kurt Russell gives a very gritty and convincing performance as the Sheriff who wants nothing more than the safety of his town and is willing to do anything to protect it. Arthur O'Dwyer is a cowboy who has a serious leg injury but still goes into this expedition, because for him the stakes are personal with his wife kidnapped. All in all, this is a very good movie, with an interesting premise and a nice twist on the Western genre.

Based on Meera Syal's novel who also wrote the script as well, this is a great coming of age story about a young Asian girl Meena Kumar living in the West Midlands during the 70's who becomes friends with the local bad girl Anita and her gang called The Wenches. It deals with racism, education, growing up and family. It accurately depicts the attitude at the time towards Asians living in the UK. The movie is funny and has got some cracking witty lines. Chandeep Uppal is very likable as Meena with her thick Brummie accent and gives an excellent performance. Familiar faces to British audiences such as Sanjeev Bhasgar, Mark Williams and Kathy Burke also take part. It's a charming and engaging movie with characters you take a shine to.

Summer Camp (2015)
Same old crap you've seen before about a rage virus going out of control at a remote Spanish camp and 4 young counsellors getting infected. It's a poor horror movie and it's basically just the counsellors running around screaming from one infected after another who have black ooze dribbling from their mouths. The only difference this has from other rage virus movies is the infected can suddenly snap out of it and become normal with no recollection as to what happened. I'm beginning to get tired of the camera shake technique that these type of horror movies use as well. The viewer is bombarded with quick-cuts and constant camera-shake which becomes annoying. The acting of the 4 leads isn't that good either. Do yourself a favour, there are far better rage virus movies out there so skip this one.

One day, a woman in her 70's Tokue brings him a plastic box filled with home-made sweet bean, because she doesn't like the industrial sweet bean Sentaro uses for his dorayaki. At her request, Sentaro hesitantly hires Tokue as an sweet bean maker, and from then on, business is booming. But trouble looms when rumours start that Tokue lives in a sanitarium because she had leprosy as a child.

This is such a great movie which is heartfelt and a little bit sad. The story is about illness, redemption, discrimination, youth and capitalism. But above all, it's about enjoying life and looking at the bright side of things. It's not a food movie at all but a wonderful story about 3 lonely people finding friendship and learning lessons in life from each other. Director Naomi Kawase who also wrote the script does a fantastic job and the 3 leads are superb. Kirin Kiki is outstanding as the old lady Tokue. Lovely cinematography especially when showing the cherry blossoms swaying in the wind. Overall I really liked this movie, it's beautiful and sentimental...and it will definitely make you want to eat dorayaki!!

Frank Capra's knack for getting the best out of James Stewart and Jean Arthur is demonstrated here with both stars giving superb performances. As a bumbling, naive Senator who is a lamb thrown to the wolves in Washington, Stewart does a fabulous job although there are moments when his bumbling awkwardness looks a bit staged. Jean Arthur is a natural for the role of the wise secretary who at first scorns his innocent ways but soon comes to realise he's the real thing. As usual in a Capra movie, you have to be willing to forgive some obvious plot contrivances or overall schmaltz. The ending (when it finally comes after a long time) is rather abrupt as though the director suddenly realised he'd gone overtime on the story! This is James Stewart at his peak here and it's a movie not to be missed. A true classic.

This terrific movie has an outstanding performance by Beryl Reid as an ageing lesbian actress June whose character George in a soap opera is about to axed. She takes out her frustrations on her lover Childie played by Susannah York. Beryl Reid's non-stop barrage of put-downs, insults, wisecracks and other hateful remarks are acidly hilarious. Her world is about to teeter over the edge when a female BBC production head sets her eyes on snatching Childie away from her. Although the movie does go on for half an hour too long, it held my attention from start to finish. There are plenty of location shots from around London in the late 60's. It was quite a groundbreaking movie at the time for it's graphic lesbian sex scene but now it's rather tame. All in all, thanks to Beryl Reid's brilliant acting, this is a great movie to watch and see a person disintegrate before the viewer's very eyes.

aka Naked Fury. This short British crime b-movie is about a bungled heist in which a night watchman is shot and subsequently dies whilst his daughter is held hostage in a crumbling and dangerous warehouse that's ready to be demolished with the thieves. It is quite a tedious movie to be honest. To be fair the story is fairly brisk but it just isn't interesting enough even if there are some twists near the end. It's obvious that the thieves are going to fall out before the movie finishes. The cast, with the exception of a youthful Kenneth Cope who would go on to Randall & Hopkirk, are largely unknowns. A waste of an hour.

A fairly loose adaptation of Jonathan Swift's work which is saved by Ray Harryhausen's special effects. Be it the giant and tiny people sequences or the perils that come to Gulliver and his wife courtesy of an alligator and a squirrel, it's these that most will find interesting. The story has been given a romantic edge to corner the family market. The movie is very colourful but somehow there were times when I was bored watching as it dragged. Kerwin Mathews gives a good performance as Gulliver and the supporting cast are fine. I'm sure kids will love this movie more than adults though.

On a dark and stormy night, 11 strangers have to take refuge in an isolated motel when a rainstorm turns into a monsoon. One by one they begin to be killed...but by who and for what reason?

I didn't know what to expect from this movie so I was happy by how good it really was. Such an imaginative mystery storyline. By the first 10 or 20 minutes you get this feeling that the entire movie is going to be nonstop suspense that gives you a feeling as if you were the character but instead of you making the decisions you are being forced into them. There are numerous red herrings to make you think and the twists that are thrown in took me by surprise. Brilliant acting by John Cusack and Amanda Peet with the rest of the cast which includes Ray Liotta performing well. The movie had me on the edge of my seat and held my interest from start to finish. I loved it.

A delightful comedy by the men behind the Carry On movies - Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas. Michael Craig plays Jack Hopkins, an aircraft designer who's hobby is traction engines. An American airline executive comes to the UK to buy new aircraft and it's a two horse race between Hopkins' design and another by a rival company called the Gryphon. Unfortunately the relationship between Hopkins and the American doesn't get off to a good start when the American's car crashes into Hopkins' pride and joy called The Iron Maiden.

I was surprised by how good this gentle comedy was. The movie may not be as well known or liked as Genevieve or The Titfield Thunderbolt but it's got it's own charm to it with a nice story. It hasn't got any of the smut that's associated with the Carry On movies either. As this is a transport movie, there are many classic vehicles (planes/cars/traction engines) of the time seen. The English countryside in Summer has never looked better. The traction engine The Iron Maiden is still around to this day and can be seen in various steam rallies around the UK. There's a great cast to this movie with two of the Carry On team in Jim Dale and Joan Sims getting cameo roles. All in all, this is a wonderful family comedy which I really enjoyed. One to seek out for sure.

Probably the worst movie in the Purge franchise. It's a prequel story about the very first purge that takes place on Staten Island. This is basically a race movie - the good black people of a neighbourhood taking on the evil white militias that come to their place to take them all out. What once was a franchise about surviving the night, now has become a (semi)political movie about racism and racial divides. As to the cast, I've never heard about any of them apart from Marisa Tomei playing a role of the person that comes up with the idea of the purge. The movie stops short of terrible by its flowing plot, quick editing and visuals but I can't really recommend it for those that liked the previous entries in the franchise.

The story of the last weeks of Jesus Christ told out of the perspective of the first ever female apostle in Mary Magdalene. It is an interpretation of the Bible and the new found redemption of Mary Magdalene by the Vatican in 2016. Rooney Mara plays the title role and gives quite a solid performance. Joaquin Phoenix also has his moments as Jesus. The cinematography was fabulous. The whole look and feel felt accurate and it had a nice score. It did feel too modern often in the way the people talked and the way they gestured. Garth Davis as director has put together a new narrative of Jesus and Mary Magdalene which won't be to everyone's taste but I enjoyed it.

Peter Sellers plays a smarmy, self-absorbed star of a TV gourmet show who enjoys the swinging bachelor life, even as he hits his mid-40s. He meets up with Goldie Hawn, a hip sexually-liberated young girl who is 19 years old and the sparks as they say fly.

This movie started off well but after the first half hour it went downhill. It's not a comedy with that many laughs if I'm being honest and Hawn's character turns from somebody that's playing hard to get into a giggling annoyance. The whole section of the movie where the couple go to France to wine and dine is tedious to say the least. There is absolutely no chemistry between Hawn and Sellers characters. This is certainly not one of Seller's best works and I would say many of the movies he made during the late 60's to the early 70's are not up to scratch. Overall a rather misguided and lightly dull movie which I won't be bothering with again.

The Shrine (2010)
A trio of American journalists go to a small village in Poland to investigate the mysterious death of a young man. Once there, the villagers are unfriendly and warn them to leave. They see a mist that seems to hang over a forest near the village and go to take a look but come across a statue to a demon. The villagers arrive in the forest and capture the trio to take them to a shrine.

At first I thought this was going to be a slow moving and boring horror but thankfully the last third of the movie more than makes up for the other two thirds. The movie is fairly low budget, so don't go in looking for fantastic special effects. The acting is decent. There is hardly any gore at first but the red stuff comes thick and fast by the end. It is also fairly creepy at times as well. In the end, it was a good and entertaining horror but you need some patience before the gory payout.

Teen pop idol Jeep Jackson is drafted into the army for 2 years which presents problems for his superiors when he secretly bunks off with his agent to sing at concerts at night or is dating the Drill Sergeant's daughter.

Made as a parody to cash in on Elvis being conscripted into the army at the time, this movie proved popular and made leading actor Anthony Newley into a huge star. In fact this movie made him into a bona-fide music performer with several of his records entering the UK chart. It's a feel-good comedy similar to early Carry On movies with Newley performing 4 numbers during the movie. Sid James, Lionel Jeffries, Bernie Winters (minus his brother Mike) and a cameo role for Clive Dunn appear in the movie. As a whole, it's an amusing movie and well worth taking a look.

Kenneth More is Billy Blood, a man with perfect health that's selected by the British Atomic Space Centre to become the first man to land on the Moon. They don't want to send their trained astronauts in case something happens to them so Blood is sent by them to test the waters so to say.

Kenneth More is charming as the leading character Billy Blood. The story has a lot of gentle comedy with some of the laughs being provided by the jealous astronauts with one played by Charles Gray trying to sabotage Blood from going to the Moon. The stunning blonde Shirley Anne Field plays More's love interest. There's a bit of a twist once More supposedly lands on the Moon! The surreal opening to the movie shows you the type of humour you'll find on show here. Whilst this comedy has some slow spots here and there, on the whole it's an amusing movie to watch.

The Legacy (1978)
An American couple come over to the UK and on a motorcycle ride in the country they are "accidentally" run off the road by a wealthy man who invites them to stay at his mansion whilst their bikes are being repaired in the local village. Once there, numerous guests start to appear and each one dies in mysterious circumstances. The American woman slowly begins to realise that her presence at the house is no coincidence and she's been primed to take over the evil power of the very ill owner of the mansion.

Quite a good horror mystery but be aware that it is a little slow paced but to be fair to the story it doesn't have long boring stretches of irrelevant dialogue or character development that nobody wants or needs, the majority of what takes place is relevant to the story. The twists and turns are revealed gradually, although not completely to my satisfaction and a few things could have been elaborated on a little bit more. The movie managed to keep my interest throughout and I liked the overall story and where it went, even if the last couple of minutes didn't make a whole lot of sense and felt somewhat rushed and unfinished. The location filming around Loseley House in Guildford, Essex is beautiful. There's a little bit of gore involved and some nice deaths. It has faults to be sure and it isn't a masterpiece by any means, but for what it was I liked it.

On a tropical island, a man is sent from his small village to a penal colony after an affair with a married woman. He escapes from the colony and is discovered by a bunch of pirates led by Christopher Lee. The pirates agree to help him get back home but only if he'll tell them where the colonists' treasure is buried. After seeing how nasty a bunch they are, he rejoins his former village in a fight to see off the pirates.

A unique and entertaining Hammer swashbuckling movie with the storyline set entirely on land. The only time you see a ship at sea is in the opening credits. There's good action, especially for the battle at the finale, while it's good to see low cost effects, such as a piranha attack simulated by ripples on the water which is quite effective. The plot is brisk and there's never a dull moment. Kerwin Mathews is good as the dashing lead man Jonathan Standing whilst Christopher Lee is as dependable as always as the pirate Captain LaRoche. Oliver Reed has a bit part role as one of the pirates Brocaire and there's a cameo role for a very young Denis Waterman. This might not be one of the greatest pirate movie you'll ever see but it's great fun and is entertaining enough.

Sentenced to death for murder, Pitt, a civil servant reveals that he has long been a foreign agent smuggling secrets out of the country. He meets with special branch officer Inspector Brown and offers to reveal the identity of an elusive master spy in return for a reprieve. With 5 days before Pitt is to be hung, Brown sets out to trace the identity of the spy without having to reprieve Pitt.

The mystery starts well and has potential but it is never filled as fully as I'd hoped at the start. Instead it goes off the rails and becomes baggy and the climax is a real damp squib. It's a shame because it moved quickly for 30 minutes or so and promised much. It is still worth watching once but it isn't very good. Overall this is an average mystery movie but it could have been much better.

A good adaptation by Hammer Studios of the Jekyll & Hyde story. It's well-directed by Terence Fisher, and the sets, costumes, set decorations and cinematography are excellent. Performances are very good, particularly Paul Massie in the title roles, though he may seem a bit over-the-top at times. He does an excellent job of differentiating between Jekyll and Hyde especially vocally. Christopher Lee turned down the role of Jekyll for fear of being typecast so he took the character of Jekyll's friend - the pompous and sleazy Paul Allen instead. Well worth a watch.

There's been a lot of buzz lately about this movie with some saying it's the best horror movie in years. It's OK I'll grant you that but it's certainly not as good as certain people make out it is because many things do not make any sense at all. The storyline on the whole is frankly ridiculous and rather laughable. On the plus side, the atmosphere of the movie is done very well. The sense that something evil has manifested itself grows as the story goes on (after a rather slow start I might add). Just as you think it's building up to something good, the finale lets it down. The performances from the cast which includes Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne are fine. In the end I'm not sure why this movie has been highly praised by so many as I can't say it's memorable at all. Give a week or two and I'll have forgotten all about it. It's just an average horror at best.

I had put off from watching this movie for a long time due to it's reputation for being rather cheesy. Well, it is cheesy but in a good way. It's the movie that made Kevin Bacon a star and he carries off his likable role as Ren McCormack extremely well. There's no denying the feel-good factor and the charm that Footloose shows even though the story about a town banning music and dancing would be a bit unlikely yet it is perfectly suitable for the teenage audience at which it is pitched. The movie has a great cast which includes John Lithgow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chris Penn and Lori Singer. The soundtrack which features Kenny Loggins' memorable title track is fantastic. Footloose is certainly no masterpiece but it succeeds in being a lighthearted knockabout caper, and as such is a very enjoyable movie.

This was a pleasant surprise of a movie about obsessive personality in the social media-centric age we live in. Aubrey Plaza's character Ingrid has serious social issues. She equates passing interactions on social media as meaningful friendships. These virtual relationships quickly turn into real obsessions. She targets a California Insta-girl named Taylor who responds to one of Ingrid's comments and the next thing you know Ingrid is heading to LA. Through some mild stalking and other questionable behavior, Ingrid becomes fast friends with Taylor and is desperate to win and retain Taylor's affection through any means necessary. It's quite an uncomfortable watch at times and even though it's billed as a dark comedy there's no laughs to be had here. Aubrey Plaza is excellent as Ingrid and you do sort of sympathise with her as she's rather lonely and wants to be loved but the way she goes about getting friendship and love is dubious. The supporting cast led by Elizabeth Olsen and O'Shea Jackson Jr are great. All in all, a fabulous movie that looks at how social media and the need for acceptance will drive someone to go to many means to the point of obsession. Go watch.
