This one is worth a look for the horror fan with well-tested nerves who is looking for something different and original. Those who can look past the disturbing content will find a surprisingly classy, mature and heartbreaking film that falls just a little short.

This one had potential to be a fun, campy romp, but instead it's a mess and the saddest thing of all is that it seems to think it's ideas are actually it's own. Not worth anyone's time.

This film is representive of the Peter Jackson horror fans know and love, becoming a Hollywood insider. However, no one would have predicted from this mess of a film that this man would one day go on to make one of the greatest film trilogies ever. This one can't hold a candle to his previous works in the horror genre either, but it's worth a look for completionists. Just don't expect a film that knows what it wants to be, or how it wants you to feel.

Suspiria (1977)

This is a beautiful, creepy little picture with several good things going for it, and horror fans won't regret seeing it thanks to atmosphere and buckets of blood for everyone. But a lack of narrative direction and some poor acting holds it back from being as good as it could have been. This is one case to prove that style never trumps substance, or the irresistible combination of both.

I'm no great advocate of the original, but this Hollywood remake is a spit in the face to even that film. There's minor, mindless entertainment to be had here. But it's buried underneath wretched writing and buckets of unoriginality.

I have to applaud Carpenter for his vision and being gutsy enough to even try and get a project like this off the ground, but much like his "Prince Of Darkness", this tale is a little too much all at once and asks the viewer to suspend their disbelief more than most will be able to. There's plenty worth seeing here, but some of it is campy when it shouldn't be, or simply does not achieve the effect it was going for. It's an interesting failure, but still a failure.

Session 9 (2001)

This is a well acted, atmospheric and at times quite creepy little film. But it squanders it's potential with a been there, done that plot twist that offers no pay off for the brooding build-up. Still, for such a low budget film it's surprising how well made it is, and it still warrants a watch from cult horror lovers. But director Brad Anderson has, in my opinion, put out several much better films since this one.

I should have expected bad things when this one got pushed back to a January release, and it's just as one might expect. This film is a catastrophic mess of themes and attempts in scares that often end in muffled laughter or exasperated exclamations of "What the hell?". It's a damn shame, because this had serious potential to be a new classic and a great film, instead I can't urge you enough not to waste your time on this crapfest. The Bye Bye Man should indeed go "Bye Bye".

This is good fun for an evening of gore, and surprisingly the acting, direction and characters are all spot on, making this a fairly serious horror film with a handful of effective, memorable moments. But the uneven tone and unintentional cheesiness hold it back from being the classic it could've been. Still more than worth a look for horror fans of all kinds.

If you're looking for an in-your-face scarefest this one could fit the bill. It's riddled with clichés and jumpscares, but it has it's moments, and those are shockingly effective. Although it's drab, unoriginal and uninspired, this flick warrants a watch thanks to some strong performances and an absorbing climax. But if you want a great eighties vampire film you're better off sticking with The Lost Boys or Fright Night for a film with more personality.

There was almost no need to make this film, and by knowing that none of the victims can escape in the end it's hard to even stomach this one. It's brutal, ugly and sadistic simply for the sake of it. The plot points it "adds" to the original are worthless and dumb, the gore is overdone, and it's hopelessly depressing. All of this without any of the breathtaking suspense or stylish direction of the original remake. This is the kind of worthless shit that nearly killed horror. Fuck this movie.

This could've been so much better in my opinion, and a true classic, if only it wasn't more concerned with trying to look like something more prestigious than it is. When this film gets going, it's a brooding, creepy and hauntingly beautiful film. But more often than not it's caught up showing us tiny details that we don't need and ultimately feels like a mess. Maybe some like this style of filmmaking, but I prefer deep films that are actually "deep" and don't try to be more intelligent by pummeling us over the head with irrelevant scenes and artsy camera zooms. This one is still worth a look simply for the parts that are still good, of which there are plenty. But it could've been so much more.

The Haunting (1999)

While this one is not without merit, namely it's magnificent sets and imposing atmosphere, it's ultimately a mess. Gone is any sense of true suspense or subtlety as Jan De Bont believes that a horror film viewer should see absolutely everything. Sad thing is, being pummeled over the head at every turn with cheap CGI ghoulies and golden cherubs isn't at all scary. This is not how you make a horror film.

Before I Wake (2016)

Mike Flanagan proves once again that he is the best new voice in horror with this film. It's very different from his usual output, but it's still got a lot of his trademark themes along with some genuine emotion that makes this one much more than just a nasty horror flick. It's PG-13 rating holds it back a bit, and it's not anything breathtakingly original, but it's very good and very worth anyone, horror fan or not's time.

XX (2017)

I've seen much better feature length, female directed, horror films than any of the four shorts in this film. If this was some attempt to suggest to Hollywood that women are just as able at scaring audiences as men, then it failed miserably. Rather than think of anything remotely original, these ladies are happy to blandly rehash everything from The Omen and Rosemary's Baby, to Friday The 13th and Evil Dead. Besides the Jack Ketchum based "The Box" there isn't a shred of originality in this film, and none of the segments attempt to do anything to spice up or even add enthusiasm to their tired tales. It's not awful, just awfully boring and unoriginal. If you want to see a good female directed horror film go check out Pet Sematary or the handful of other good/decent female directed horror efforts out there. They're all better than this.

This one rises above it's cliché story thanks to Argento-like cinematography and some richly creepy scenes. Rings (2017)

It's strange that the studio even tried to make this into a franchise after so long, and the results are about as good as could be expected. It tries, but this one is a muddled, cheesy mess that makes a mockery of the original. Those wanting to get a thrill out of seeing Samara again will be satisfied in small doses, but those hoping for an intelligent film will be sorely disappointed. Paramount should leave this "franchise" alone.

The Void (2016)

This one has massive potential, and had a huge spot on my radar. Sadly, it just couldn't hold up to my lofty expectations. The first half is great, full of creepy atmosphere, genuinely unsettling gore and a sense of impeccable dread. Then the filmmakers felt the need to try to explain themselves and ended up ruining a good, ominous film with cheesy plot-twists including a mad doctor. By the end, one realizes that these two directors failed to think of anything remotely original, as the film "borrows" (more like outright steals scenes from) Hellraiser, Slither, Prince Of Darkness, In The Mouth Of Madness etc. I'm not kidding, there's a scene at the end that's absolutely identical to the corridor chase in the first Hellraiser. It doesn't pay homage as much as it does blatantly rip off. Although this is a mildly enjoyable, well-made enough endeavor, I can't honestly give it props when it doesn't even try.

It's easy to see why this one has become a classic, but it's not without it's more noticeable flaws. Still, none of these hold it back from being a highly original and unique little film that's in a category all it's own, and easily one of the best post-Scream meta-horrors.

This is a fairly well made picture, but the original already did everything this one does with more style and atmosphere. In fact, it's pretty much a shot for shot remake up until the end. This one is well worth your time, and deserving of much more praise than it gets. It requires patience as it takes a long time for the scares to settle in, but the build up is superb with a cast of loveable characters and a lot of surprisingly funny moments. The setting and atmosphere also perfectly lend to the creepy moments. It's only held back by it's lacking of a proper story and it's minor letdown of an ending. But still a must see and great entertainment.

I expected this one to be well worth my time, what with the involvement of two dependable genre veterans in Greg Mclean (Wolf Creek and Rouge) and James Gunn (Dawn Of The Dead remake and Slither), and I was right. Somewhat in the same vein as The Purge films this is an entertaining, disturbing and blunt little film that takes a metaphorical look at human nature, capitalism, corporate mentality and morality. It's not an easy film to sit through, and it does become rather grim, but it succeeded in having me yelling at the screen and sitting on the edge of my seat, which is no easy feat these days. It's not perfect or particularly original even. But it's genuine, perfectly directed and acted and thoroughly satisfying. Whether you're looking for intelligence, black humor or rampant gore, you'll find what you're looking for here.

If you're looking for something unlike anything you've ever seen, I'd recommend giving this one a go. It's chilly, creepy and effectively unnerving. But best of all, it's truly original. Something not easy to accomplish these days. Not all of it's concepts work and some parts of the film leave you wanting more, but the sum is better than the parts and it's a satisfying watch overall and much better than director Ovredal's previous effort, Trollhunter (in my opinion). Well worth horror fans' time.

I was extremely excited for Verbinski's return to the horror genre, and while this is certainly worth a look, I can't quite give it my stamp of approval. This is a highly ambitious little film that tries to do far too much, and ends up only succeeding in half of it's ambitions, half of the time. It can be slightly plodding, and a more than a little hard to swallow at times, but I could see it becoming somewhat of a cult classic in time. Not on par with The Ring or even Pirates, but it does it's own thing and doesn't shy away from the overtly controversial. In this day and age, that deserves some respect.

Life (2017)

It won't win points for originality, as we've definitely seen astronauts battle alien lifeforms of all shapes and sizes in outer space before. But the "alien" is different from anything we've seen, the direction spot on, the cast full of familiar faces that give it their best and a different setting from the usual "deep space" portrayal that actually makes things more intense. It's not perfect, but it's fun, suspenseful and had me on the edge of my seat. Good entertainment with a healthy dose of humanity as well.

I was hoping this could be a fun, teen horror romp in the tradition of Scream, I Know What You Did, Urban Legend etc. But instead it turned out to be a total mess. This film throws a lot of ideas in the pot and stirs them rather vigorously, but sadly none of them are the slightest bit original or even handled in a fresh or fun manner. When the film is not being flat out boring, it's being immensely stupid and unbearably cheesy. Let's get one thing straight. When making a supernatural horror film, do NOT try to turn things into a basic slasher pic. It does not work. Wretched, ugly, boring stuff. Leave it dead.

Let's get one thing straight. I hate musicals with a passion, but this being a "rock" musical and being directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, whom I find to be a dependable, original director, I thought I might like this. And it certainly wasn't bad. It's fiercely original, there are some memorable tunes and some amazing vocalists contributing their pipes, like Sarah Brightman and the utterly amazing Anthony Stewart Head. But not all of the songs work, and I despise the notion that ALL of the dialogue has to be sung. Predictably, the moments that are obviously not meant to be sung are cringey and forced. Also, Alexa Vega is pretty and astechitcally she fits her role, but she can't sing at all. Despite these rather large faults, the story is so original and the vision so unique that Repo more than warrants a watch from horror fans.

This a top notch sequel, and honestly I even enjoyed it just a little more than the original. I had hopes for this one, wanting someone to finally do a "found footage" film about aliens right for once, but it was all for naught. This is just another variation of the template we saw in last year's amazingly disappointing "Area 51". It does have a few decent moments and some solid characterization going for it, but it takes way too long for the action to finally start, and when it does it lasts a measly twenty-something minutes, which equates to rehashing stuff we've already seen time and time again. Not bad, but sorely mediocre.

I was hoping that this would be a fun, suspenseful little flick in the tradition of other late nineties teen horror flicks like IKWYDLS, The Faculty and Urban Legend. However, mentioning this film in the same breath as those would be a travesty. You'd think for their first American endeavor that the Pang Brothers would have been interested in creating a film a little less by the numbers, but instead this film plays out exactly as one would expect. It's a completely unoriginal ghost story that checks off all the appropriate boxes to be as mundane and bland as possible. There are some attempts at drama and story, but those are drowned by the cast of washed up TV actors, with only the little boy and Kristen Stewart giving worthwhile performances. I'm a big fan of Jamie Blank's first foray into the horror genre, Urban Legend, which is up there with the cream of the crop of late 90's, Scream inspired teen slashers, in my opinion. Despite a spotty reputation, I was pleased to find that this one is along the same lines, but not without it's own personality. It's not perfect, with several apparent plot holes, a sometimes hard to follow plot and in some ways, disappointing ending. But the journey there is fun, filled with memorable, expertly directed kills and a biting sense of humor. It's almost like a chick flick meets slasher, but it's more than appealing for both genders. Although it does sort of paint all men in a light of suspicion, danger and sleaze, it's just downright fun and well executed. I miss slashers like this.

This is an solidly directed film, that for the most part accomplishes what it sets out to do in being as dirty, disgusting and "creepy" as possible, but I can't give it my stamp of approval for several reasons. While the cast is decent, all of the characters prove in one way or another to be either flatout annoying or downright despicable and beyond "woman accidentally gets locked in subway and pursued by deformed maniac" there is no assemblance of any story, therefore the film just seems pointless and gory for the sake of shock value alone. A rather nasty, pointless film. Even in the context of a horror flick.

There hasn't been a good killer shark film since, well, Jaws. And in the wake of the disaster that was "The Shallows" last year, this one looks even better. But it is really a rather good film. It's not perfect, the constant screaming can be a little grating and it's nothing groundbreaking, but it is incredibly tense and suspenseful with several nail biting sequences and surprisingly Moore and Holt are very likeable and good at being thoroughly freaked out. This was an absolute surprise. Since Child's Play 2 I've thought that this franchise was in a downward spiral to hell. The last installment was merely decent, but still not satisfying to me. I've long thought that the series needed a ground up reboot after the disasters of Bride and Seed, but this was an astonishingly fun and well helmed installment. Easily the best since part 2 way back in 1990. It still incorporates the plot points I'd rather pretend don't exist, like Jennifer Tilly's character, but this is really a return to form. There's still humor here, but this is a down to business, nasty little slasher flick. The practical effects are welcome, kills gory and fun and the cast and direction surprisingly great. It's nothing groundbreaking, but this is good old-fashioned Chucky fun, the likes of which we haven't had in a decade. I may have my gripes, but I'm totally okay with them making more of these if they're this much fun.
