Excellent blend of drama, thrills and some commentary thrown in for good measure. Acting from the cast was fantastic, Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and especially Ben Foster who as of now (September) certainly deserves a Supporting Actor nomination come Oscar time. Was never bored with any of the characters and found them to be all fleshed out with their motivations and views of the world clear. A real treat, I hope more people catch this, it deserves all the money it can in theaters.

A hell of a lot of fun, might not be as strong when it comes to the plot but the humor and characters help to make up for that. Certainly sets a high bar for the superhero films coming out later this year. Here's hoping they match up!

Simply fantastic, a very dark and disturbing tale and a rather confusing one as well, needs a bit of a think at the end to try and wrap your brain around the the whole piece, the ending especially baffled me at first but in a good way. Jake Gyllenhaal has such an emotional performance here I defy any viewer not to feel for him. I really hope he gets a nomination here, he should have gotten one for Nightcrawler but perhaps there will be a "make up" award here that people keep talking about. I suppose my only real problem with Nocturnal Animals was that the storyline involving Amy Adams wasn't quite on the same level as Gyllenhaal's but given what his character goes through that can only be expected. I was still interested in both however, was never impatient to get back to the the admittedly better "story in a story", still them not being equal is still an issue if not a major one for me.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
I see several Oscar nominations coming in this film assuming the Academy doesn't get all butthurt over Mel Gibson. If not I am hoping for nods to Andrew Garfield and his great performance to Mel Gibsons directing and some visual stuff as well. Of course there are still two months to go so other films may come to overshadow Hacksaw Ridge but as of now I think it would be a shame to see this film go unrecognized. Desmond Doss and his personal beliefs and how they clashed with the realities of combat was s story ready to be told. Truly he and the supporting cast were terrific (along with Vince Vaughn... Vince Vaughn really?) and the war scenes... once Doss and his fellow soldiers arrive on Hacksaw Ridge it is a brutal thing to watch, Gibson pulls no punches with what war looks like and doesn't shy away to appease the precious sensibilities of anyone.

The only problems I really have with this is the clunky start of his courting his future wife and relations between him and his father. Picked up real fast after he goes to boot camp though. Also I found there to be a few moments of "Hollywood" here where the film has a character give a dramatic speech or such. Annoying but I suppose inevitable. These are minor though, momentary hiccups in great film.

Brilliant. Civil War was a little shaky in the beginning but once the conflict between the characters starts boiling to the surface this film takes off big time. I only wish I felt more conflict in myself when it came to the two "sides" but I was Team Captain America all the way. :)

Certainly deserves the praise that Moonlight is receiving even if not quite up to the insanely high standards that the critics are throwing on the film. Still one of my favorites of 2016, will cement a place in the bottom half of my Top 10 list I believe.

Marvel makes another terrific film in their lineup of films with Doctor Strange. You can argue that this follows same basic formula of origin story films especially with Iron Man and that the villain was not the most fleshed out and I can understand these viewpoints. For me though the story unfolding to us, the journey Dr. Strange is going on and the new world opening up to the audience in the MCU was too fascinating for me to really have any real gripes on Doc Strange. If anything perhaps the first act was not as interesting as what followed but I was all in thereafter. I think this may find a home in my Top 5 Marvel films, really left an impression.

Also this is definitely something that should be watched in IMAX 3D if it can be managed, usually I find 3D to be a distraction and unneeded but I think it expands the experience greatly like it did with a film like Gravity. The visuals are the main feature I think even more than the story and characters (which were good don't get me wrong) so spending the extra few bucks to really enjoy them is recommended. Also as a passing note I have to say I was impressed with the handling of the "love interest" in the film. Rachel McAdams was useful and rather essential in this story and isn't just tacked on so the hero can be "humanized" with a relationship. It worked where it so often doesn't. Good on you movie!

Beautifully animated like a Pixar film should be with a fun story and characters to back it up. Certainly a quality sequel, took away any fears of another Cars 2 within first 10 minutes. When we have our inevitable third movie I'll vote for "Finding Hank".

I found the film to be quite the emotional punch in the gut, multiple hits as the film continued on its depressing way. I really don't know what to say here that wouldn't be too much of a spoiler but it sported an excellent performance from Casey Affleck who needs to get an Oscar nomination from what he brought out here. The only reason that I can't get this over the 4 star mark is because of the nephew character. I found him to be quite unlikable and most of his scenes annoyed me as I felt they distracted the audience from the emotional weight that was being brought out from Casey Affleck. Perhaps it was the casting choice but it is a blot on what could have been something close to perfect

Arrival (2016)
I found Arrival to be overall too much of a slow burn to give it a higher rating but that doesn't mean that I didn't have a great time figuring this film out. It is definitely one that makes you have to think, especially after leaving the theater to decide if it all holds together at the end. Of which I think really worked, a reveal at the end could have fallen on its face and ruined what came before but it flowed easily with the film as a whole.

Amy Adams carried Arrival on her shoulders, the rest of the supporting cast were fine but if she didn't sell her performance than what unfolds wouldn't have had the impact that it managed to. Jeremy Renner's character though didn't have enough to do here, felt more like he tagged along as Adams did all the heavy lifting. Would have been nice to make him more useful throughout.

Of course the special effects were fantastic, the opening shot of their approaching the spaceship was the best in the film imo, incredible on a theater screen and was quite intrigued with how the film decided to make these "arrivals" both visually and with how they communicate. I can say that Arrival is not a film for everyone, those who need more action will be very disappointed here, it is not that kind of film, not an Independence Day or War of the Worlds at all, closer to Contact if a comparison must be made. Arrival is certainly more on character and plot which is hardly a bad thing now is it? :)

Not up to the standards of the classic animated version but still a fun watch. The CGI is superb, the jungle and animals feel very realistic. Idris Elba was fantastic as Shere Khan and the tiger was certainly the best part of the film.

Sure the film pushed the spy plot too far without too much thought into it but I found the film to be hilarious and it had few of the cringe scenes that comedies usually have that take away from the experience for me. I've always found Kevin Hart to be annoying as well but as there is a role reversal here with him playing the straight man for the most part it improved the film there as well. Dwayne Johnson surprised me with his ability to do comedy and was a treat to watch.

Don't Breathe (2016)
As someone who doesn't care for horror movies this was a chance to go see. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. It might be that I found this to be more of a thriller than a horror film but hey its advertised as one so it must be right?

Reminded me of Panic Room with the roles reversed. Even one of the kids who break into the blind mans house looks like Jared Leto from Panic Room. As I liked that one I suppose it makes sense to have a good time with Don't Breathe as well. I will say though that I found myself in the odd position of cheering more for the blind guy trying to kill the "heroes" then for the thieves trying to rob him. Sure the man is hardly a saint (not by a long shot, watch and see why) but I simply cannot feel sorry or root for people who break into someones house, nope.

Only negative i really have here is a couple rather ridiculous events that happen to keep them in the house when they could have just left but I can put that aside as the film overall was fun to watch, even with a predictable outcome. Would watch again.

The Wailing (2016)
A long one but once it gets going it should be impossible for anyone to say that this isn't a wildly entertaining mystery/horror film. Will leave you questioning what is really going on even after finishing. Is a perfect example of a movie that needs to be watched more than once as the ending will almost certainly leave you with a "what the..." feeling. Ambiguous and perhaps jumbled but as a whole was quite a treat to watch.

La La Land (2016)
Unconventional, beautifully shot, great music and great humor can be found here. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone work fantastically together, chemistry just steams from the screen. I can truly see why there is so much buzz around this film, I think La La Land is a certainty for a Best Picture nomination and I would give it very good odds to winning as well not to mention other major category Oscar noms. With all that said for me there were times in the film where I felt rather... bored. I can say this is certainly not a film for everyone, the girl next to me fell asleep for instance, many will not like this at all and not just because it is a musical but for the "artsy" storytelling style as well. For me I was into La La Land for its majority but as I said there were a few tough spots for me. I simply cannot love this film like others have.

It seems to be surprisingly popular, the theater I saw this in on Christmas was simply packed. Never thought this film had that kind of attention to general audiences, am thrilled to see a smaller film such as this get such a crowd.

This is a film that I think needs at least two viewings to really understand all the subtext going on. A weird one and definitely not for everyone but I found the society created in The Lobster to be fascinating as well as the characters living in it. I'd say that whether or not someone liked a movie such as "Her" will determine their interest here as well.

Story is simplistic as well as the characters but the humor carried it for the most part (except for the in your face social commentary) and the relationship between Hopps and Wilde carried it though I couldn't help wish for a stronger tie, they went from unwilling partnership to friends real fast.

Was a decent watch but after the perfection of Days of Future Past, this new X-Men: Apocalypse was a bit of a mixed bag. I think the film spent so much time introducing the rebooted young characters and including scenes that are there only to tease a future film that it really dragged this down. After all this is called "Apocalypse" and is supposed to be about that character. Instead we are distracted by other events and even when we do have Apocalypse on screen it takes so much time to get the story going that it was hard to stay invested.

The new X-Men characters were interesting enough (especially Sophie Turner's Jean Grey) and there were enough entertaining enough action scenes to make this a worthy popcorn film but it is simply not a great film like its predecessors sad to say. I suppose Bryan Singer can't hit a homerun every time at bat...

Certainly not the fantastic video game movie many were hoping for but it certainly isn't the terrible film that the critics would suggest that it is. It is simply a fun fantasy film that doesn't ask too much of us. Yes the plot and characters aren't that in depth and the main human is an Aragorn clone but overall I enjoyed myself in the theater. 13 Hours (2016)
I'm rather surprised that Michael Bay is capable of making a decent film any longer, I thought that the Transformers series had ruined him and here he directs something that is actually entertaining. The action is actually watchable and I was able to tell what was happening. Now the characters are just a series a big bearded men that were interchangeable for me and Bay still has the habit of putting in both needlessly over patriotic shots and the necessary scenes of talking with the wifey and kids back home.

Film has echoes of Black Hawk Down and one of the characters even references that so at least Bay knows where he got some of the inspiration for this. I'd say that if that was a film that you enjoyed then this will also be a treat for you even if the characters don't grab you as well and the politics a bit more hard hitting then perhaps some will care for.

Entertaining enough animated fluff film, makes the cute baby jokes a little too often, could get rather on the nose but the back and forth between Junior and Tulip was quite amusing as well as the earnestness of the boy Nate who really wanted a brother. Sully (2016)
Seeing the plane scenes play out was a thrill to watch but overall Sully felt much to Hollywood with the dramatic moments, the conversations here too confrontational to feel real, just to get a reaction from the audience. Was too procedural as well with the investigation into the crash and the time shifts to different periods of Sully's life. Didn't connect with me.

Tom Hanks was great as usual though and so was Aaron Eckhart as his copilot, its just too bad I was never fully invested, all too aware I was in a movie. Fortunately the story was intriguing if not told in perhaps the best way.

The film doesn't flow very well so it was hard to stay engaged throughout and Ana Kendrick's character felt tacked on a obliged "female character" rather than a needed presence. The Accountant doesn't use her well. However I loved Ben Affleck's Chistain Wolff, his performance as an autistic accounting badass was quite entertaining even if it took a bit to get to his baddass side of him. Moana (2016)
Has decent music, wants to sell the soundtrack more than the movie seems to me, be another Frozen. Wish they had put as much effort into the story and characters as they did with the songs and I admit the animation which was fantastic. Looking and sounding pretty only got Moana so far with me though as it was all color and no substance.
Generic Disney princess and comic relief large male dummy. Checks off all the required plot points in a movie like this which would be fine if the characters were more interesting... unfortunately they are not. Don't want to trash the movie too much however, there was enough humor to keep me entertained and I think it is safe to say that kids will love this. Doesn't meet the standards of 90s Disney though imo.

I found the underlying story to be an interesting one but I also found the narrative to be uneven, with the quick cuts given to the home lives of these three women, quick cuts showing racism in the early 1960s in the country and overdramatic scenes about racism in NASA itself. This culminates in Kevin Costner smashing the "colored restroom" sign in something so over the top that I couldn't stop myself give an eye roll. Subtle this film is not. I also have to wonder how much of this is accurate history and how much is Hollywood changes to increase the celebration of these black women, Katherine Johnson especially. Hidden Figures would have us think that she got John Glenn up to space single handedly! And got Glenn to trust her and her alone to run the numbers to get him back to Earth!

Still the film was entertaining enough that I can ignore the flaws and watch the effort to get a man into space with the help of those fighting against the ignorance of their time. If only it wasn't so on the nose!

Mel Gibson's daughter is lucky her father is who he is, if just a regular deadbeat dad then this film would have ended much quicker. As it is this film is a fun little adventure that manages to keep the pressure on with only a few stopping points. A short running time too which works to keep unnecessary additions from bogging the plot down. A straightforward story, man protecting his daughter from baddies coming for her while at same time trying to reconnect. Impressed, hope Mel Gibson turns up in more films to come.

Standard disaster fare but better acted. Like most films of this type it takes awhile to get to the actual disaster and it can feel like a bit of a slog to get there. Has the mandatory calls with the wife back home to humanize Mark Wahlberg's character but like usual in these films it interested me not the least. The explosions were nice the rest of Deepwater Horizon wasn't interesting enough so I doubt this will get a rewatch even if its an all around decent flick. Hollywood is putting out too many of these films though, saw Sully earlier, now this and in the theater saw a trailer for a film on the Boston Marathon bombing (also starring Marky Mark). Loving (2016)
Loving focuses more on the relationship between the couple the film features and pushes the actual court proceedings and general reactions of the case to the background which was an interesting choice I have to say. I was hoping for a little courtroom drama and on that front I was disappointed as it has none of that. A low key film that avoids the trappings of over-dramatizing events but I have to wonder if Loving may have went a bit too far in the other direction instead. It tried in a couple of places to hike the drama up but given what the overall film gave us it just felt like a desperate attempt to add a little spice to a bland meal and it just wasn't enough. Terrific acting, Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga nailed their performances, I just wish that this slow burn would have flared up by the end instead of just fizzling out. Decent film for all that, can understand why there was Oscar talk for it but for me I simply can't see myself watching this again.

Sing Street (2016)
I tried to keep my expectation down after hearing reviews praising Sing Street up and down and I'm glad I did since the film is not deserving of it. The music is fine but everything else from the plot to the characters I found to be mediocre at best. Most were paper thin anyway and the main duo Cosmo and Raphina I found to be irritating some of the time. Also little things kept the score down like the fact that though Cosmo was poor he somehow found the money for a different wardrobe for every song.

Still the journey was interesting enough that I can give this a lukewarm positive rating though its no doubt helped by the fact that this year has been so disappointing in its films.

These Trek reboots continue to feel more like a generic action series with the title "Star Trek" slapped on top. It just doesn't feel like the original Trek films and no amount of forced jokes and special effects is going to change that. Action scenes themselves were well done and the Jaylah character actually interested me but for the most part it just felt like "meh" characters in a "meh" plot. I couldn't buy the motivation of the villain either nor the actions he took to get to his goal. Still the film is an acceptable diversion though I'd put most of the Shatner and Stewart movies ahead of this.

The "monster" certainly looked good and being voiced by Liam Neeson was a perfect choice to voice him but I simply could not get behind the kid or his situation. Blatant attempt at tear jerking that for the most part did not work for me because I believe of the child character being so unlikable. The film not being what I was expecting it to be didn't help either. Assassin's Creed is not the video game movie that many have been waiting for I'm afraid. It spends too much time in the present and the storyline there is not that compelling. It is also jarring in how the film tries to go back and forth between the two time periods and simply does not gel well with me. However it is hardly the disaster that critics and many regular viewers have been trumpeting for all. Perhaps its because I never played the games so I am missing some disastrous fault in the adaptation from game to movie but for me I simply found Assassin's Creed to be underwhelming. It is not like this film was directed by Uwe Boll or something.

Mildly entertaining in a rainy day, nothing else to do, watch on cable kind of way.

The Shallows (2016)
Was an alright film if you want something to see on cable and you have nothing else to do. Blake Lively looks fantastic in a bathing suit and her versus the shark was an entertaining enough watch. Unfortunately everything else around it didn't interest me in the least, not her past or the few supporting characters in the film either. Half of them felt shoehorned in and were unnecessary for me but these "person in peril" movies always need to let us know that there is "family back home" and it usually is a distraction for what I am waiting to see, in this case a shark. Once it gets going it was fine, if not the levels of tension the film was trying for no doubt. The ocean itself was certainly beautiful though, the colors leapt out of the screen.

Oh and there was a seagull, I guess the bird was for comedy relief or something? Or maybe it was the Wilson of the film? Was an odd presence either way.

Nothing magnificent about this film, it really is average in every way, forgettable characters, the redone plot poorly done from the first Magnificent Seven or the original Seven Samurai with a mustache twirling villain. The two main gunfights are entertaining enough as an action piece but as the people in the film are just cardboard cutouts it was hard to really care about what was going on, no tension to be had. Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt were the best in the film naturally, Denzel has that natural charm and Christ Pratt did his Chris Prattisms that you get in Guardians and Jurassic World. I think the film would be fine on its own but carrying the burden of "Magnificent Seven" does this no favors. An acceptable watch certainly, I just hope no one is expecting anything great out of this remake.

2016 is almost done and finally I have seen a few terrific films. Its just a shame that it will probably take me deep into January to see all of the smaller late year releases.
