Evil Dead II (1987)

Directed by: Sam Raimi
Written by: Sam Raimi and Scott Spiegel.
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Sarah Berry, Dan Hicks, Kassie Wesley, Richard Domeier, Theodore Raimi, Denise Bixler and John Peaks as "Professor Knowby".
Distributed by: Rosebud Releasing

Plot: A group of people in a cabin, deep in the woods are attacked by an onslaught of flesh-possessing demons.

The Good:
-Some good gore and plenty of devilishly creative moments.
-Fantastic performance by Bruce Campbell. This guy seriously should've been famous.
-Great effects.

The Bad:
-As much as the original was low on story and character, this one is even worse. Five minutes in and Ash's girlfriend is already dead, the chant has been spoken, the demons unleashed and Ash is inexplicably already become accustomed to all of this.
-Would've worked better as a sequel.
-A little too much slapstick humor for me.

All In All: It took me some time to appreciate the original, but it truly is a classic piece of horror cinema and an amazing landmark. But as much as I wanted to like this one, I just didn't. It's not nearly as brutal, raw, creative or distinctive as the first. It does have it's charms, but I much prefer the original.

My Rating: 6.5/10

Directed by: James DeMonaco
Written by: James DeMonaco
Starring: Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson, Joseph Julian Soria, Betty Gabriel, Terry Seripco, Edwin Hodge and Kyle Secor.
Distributed by: Universal Pictures

Plot: The 2029 annual Purge falls on the months before election, and a senator who opposes the Purge and The New Founding Fathers finds herself the target of assassination. Now a motley group of survivors must protect her and the future of their country.

The Good:
-More brilliant and original concepts.
-Loveable characters.
-Elizabeth Mitchell.

The Bad:
-Too caught up in the politics.
-Leans more towards the action side, than the perfect blend that the last film had.
-Leo is kind of a dick this time around.
-Simply not as disturbing as the others.

All In All: After an already immensely stressful election year, this film is simply not much fun to watch. Although it's still a good and very worthwhile addition to the series, it's simply not as good as the second, or in my opinion, even the first. It attempts to do too much and in the process becomes rather overwrought.

My Rating: 7/10

The Neighbor (2016)
Directed by: Marcus Dunstan
Written by: Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.
Starring: Josh Stewart, Bill Engvall, Alex Essoe, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Luke Edwards, Jaqueline Fleming and Skipp Sudduth.
Distributed by: Anchor Bay Films

Plot: A couple discovers that their next door neighbors are a family of ransome artists and murderers.

The Good:
-Intense and suspenseful.
-Stylish direction.

The Bad:
-The lead character is basically a carbon copy of "Arkin" from the director's previous films "The Collector". He's even played by the same actor.
-Too short.

All In All: Dunstan made a name for himself with the Collector films, which are some of the greatest and most memorable horror films of our time. Sadly, this one just can't compare. It feels far too much like the director is just playing it safe and using the same themes over again. It's not a bad film, and it's certainly a well made, edge of your seat effort. But it doesn't feel like the product of a director that already made two exceptional films.

My Rating: 6/10

Lights Out (2016)

Directed by: David F. Sandberg
Written by: Eric Heisserer
Starring: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander Dipersia, Maria Bello, Billy Burke, Andi Osho and Alicia Vela-Bailey as "Diana".
Distributed by: Warner Bros. Pictures

Plot: A family is terrorized by a spirit from their Mother's past, one who cannot come into the light, and will never let them go.

The Good:
-Fairly scary.
-"Diana" is a fascinating, frightening and cool looking "monster".
-Loveable characters.

The Bad:
-Way too short.

All In All: It's not perfect, but this is a thoroughly entertaining little horror film. It's fairly original and tries different things with it's formula than expected. Very worth watching.

My Rating: 7.5/10

Directed by: Peter Cornwell
Written by: Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe.
Starring: Kyle Gallner, Virginia Madsen, Martin Donovan, Amanda Crew, Elias Koteas, Erik J. Berg, Ty Wood and Sophi Knight.
Distributed by: Lionsgate

Plot: A family with a teenage boy suffering from cancer move to a new house in order to be closer to the hospital. However, this house has a dark past. One that reaches out to the boy and wants him to join it in death.

The Good:
-Strong performances.
-Tries some surprisingly different approaches to the sub-genre.
-The whole cancer ordeal lends the film plenty of emotional weight, allows the actors to flex their abilities and gives the film a soul.
-Some effective scares and creepy effects.

The Bad:
-Littered with lazy, boring jumpscares.
-Presents itself as a merely bland and unoriginal rehash for too long before it drastically shifts into gear in the later half.

All In All: This one is almost one of the finest ghost films of the past decade, but nonetheless it unfortunately suffers from being a product of it's time and trying to fit into the mold paved by countless Japanese remakes back in those days. However, when it deviates from the standard it does so well and in the end stands as a very worthwhile little horror flick. If only it had been more consistent.

My Rating: 7.5/10

Directed by: Tobe Hooper
Written by: Kim Henkel and Tobe Hooper.
Starring: Marilyn Burns, Paul A. Partain, Allen Danziger, William Vail, Teri McMinn, Edwin Neal, Jim Siedow, John Dugan and Gunnar Hansen as "Leatherface",
Distributed by: Vortex Productions

Plot: A group of young people are terrorized in the Texas countryside by a sadistic and deeply disturbed family of murderous grave robbers.

The Good:
-Superbly creepy sets and set pieces. Images like the "couch" made of human bones are hard to forget.
-Terrifying ending sequence.
-Nice, gritty look going for it.

The Bad:
-Franklin is incredibly annoying.
-Really dumb characters with almost zilch personality.
-As annoying as some of the kids are, the villains are even worse, cackling and laughing like hyenas constantly. I wasn't really scared of them, I just wanted to punch them in their faces so they would shut the hell up. Leatherface is scary, thanks in large part to the fact that he never talks.

All In All: You can hate me for saying this, but I feel that the remake is a huge improvement on simply every aspect of this film. Don't get me wrong, this one certainly has things going for it, but the remake is just so much scarier, better elaborated and more suspenseful. Just not my cup of tea.

Goosebumps (2015)

Directed by: Rob Letterman
Written by: Darren Lemke
Starring: Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Ryan Lee, Amy Ryan, Jillian Bell, Halston Sage, Steven Krueger and Keith Arthur Bolden.
Distributed by: Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures.

Plot: A teenage boy discovers that his next door neighbor is R.L. Stine, and accidentally unleashes an army of Stine's most fearsome monsters on his town.

The Good:
-Actually quite charming.
-Loveable characters.
-Jack Black is magnificent as Stine.

The Bad:
-The CGI is not awful, but it's bad.
-Some of these monsters are not even from any Goosebumps books in my memory.
-Ugly, cheap looking digital cinematography.

All In All: It's not the classic it could've been, and it's not what I (and I'm sure other people who read Goosebumps as kids) was hoping for, but it's an undeniably fun little flick, perfect for some good, brainless popcorn viewing.

My Rating: 7/10

Jaws 2 (1978)

Directed by: Jeannot Szwarc
Written by: Carl Gottlieb and Howard Sackler.
Starring: Roy Scheider, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton, Joseph Mascolo, Jeffrey Kramer, Ann Dusenberry, Mark Gruner, Barry Coe, Gary Springer, Donna Wilkes, Gary Dubin, Keith Gordon and Cynthia Grover.
Distributed by: Universal Pictures

Plot: Another shark is terrorizing the island of Amity and Chief Brody must set out alone to save his sons from the monster.

The Good:
-Just as suspenseful and intense as the original.
-Good character development.
-Feels like a true continuation and not a slapdash sequel.
-You get to see the shark more.

The Bad:
-Seeing the shark more occasionally allows you to see just how fake it looks.
-Missing the mystery and some of the spectacle of the first.

All In All: As far as sequels go, they don't come much better than this. This is a polished, respectful and well made companion to the first and truly deserves to be much better remembered.
