Starting off the list is the show that arguably or probably has, on average, the highest TV ratings for an animated TV show in the USA (correct me if I'm wrong). While I watch Family Guy less and less nowadays, it is still a very entertaining show, even if its overall quality is hit and miss. The best episodes are the ones where the cutaway gags complement the story line, most notably the "Road To" episodes, which are the episodes I look forward to the most.

I'm still quite astonished that this show has a large male following. After hearing that this show has a serious male audience, curiosity is my weakness so I checked it out myself. I completely became under its spell after season 1 and I cannot stop watching it ever since. I am a bit ashamed since I'm a guy but I cannot call this a guilty pleasure as it is a very good animated show. The animation is very expressive, the characters are three dimensional and have very rounded personalities, its writing can be surprisingly complex and its morales are very admirable. The girly aspect of the show somehow feels more of a frame than the image itself and becomes something more than just a cartoon for girls. I also appreciate many of its subtle yet clever pop culture references and it does make me quite happy to see and recognise one, especially in this show. I mean, there's a Big Lebowski reference in one of the episodes. What little girl would get that reference?

Just to put it out there; this is not a girl's show. It's violent, it can sometimes be very dark and grim and it kicked ass. The Powerpuff Girls is a fun animated show that can catch you off guard under its girl power persona. What I liked about this show is its unpredictable nature. Sometimes you get a save the world episode and sometimes you get a nightmarish one or sometimes both and there are different kinds other than just that. Each episode felt different from each other and it always delivered in its surprises. The animation is very stylized and the characters are very interesting and quite complex, especially the villains.

I think this is the only Disney animated show on the list since I am not big on Disney's collection of animated television shows since most of them were catered exclusively to kids, with the exception of Kim Possible. Kim Possible was a very entertaining cartoon that actually catered less to children and more for pre-teenagers, which I was when this show was on air. I liked how Kim's double life contrasts, with her saving the world bombastic and action packed and her high school life being down to earth and surprisingly believable. The animation is the best I've seen out of the Disney Channel Original Series shows plus I really love the visual style, the characters are likeable and hugely entertaining and the jokes were surprisingly unique.

Besides having a very boring title, Regular Show is one of the shining examples of cartoons that are for adults but hiding behind the façade that its a cartoon for kids. The down to earth style complements its contrasting moments of insanity, the jokes are most of the time, quite enjoyably risqué and the characters have very interesting and quite relatable personalities. Behind an image where animals and other things are characters, it's still feels like being around with people who you might have met before.

I think Drawn Together holds the record for me saying "WHAT!?!" the most times at the television whenever something weird and bizarre happens in the show. Drawn Together was a very, very strange cartoon, not to mention quite raunchy. The situations the characters are in are so over the top and ridiculous, it always brings out a lot of emotions, particularly confusion. While it can be a little bit (or very) offensive, I really do like this show. The characters can be very despicable at points and the jokes do tend to be a bit too much but sometimes, for a strange reason, that makes it all the more funny.

The most badass cartoon to ever come out of Cartoon Network. Along with its brilliantly cinematic and stylish animation, Samurai Jack boasts a very interesting premise, a subtle sense of story telling and incredible action set pieces. It's a huge shame it has been cancelled since the story line remains unresolved to this day.

This fun little show does live up to its namesake of adventure. Adventure Time brims with so much imagination that it is beyond charming. While having a large cast of characters, each are uniquely designed and diversely personified. I love its silly and light-hearted sense of humour and the world that these characters live in is just a wonder to look at.

The best thing Seth Macfarlane has ever made up to now. I favour American Dad more than Family Guy as I appreciated its use of story and characters as the basis of the humour instead of cut-away gags like what the other Macfarlane shows, Family Guy and Cleveland Show, heavily rely on. The characters were very well rounded and a lot more interesting and colourful, the story lines have more quality to them and it's overall very hilarious.

Nickelodeon's top dog and the network's highest rated show, Spongebob Squarepants is a very inspired and very funny cartoon series and I consider it Ren & Stimpy's true successor. The setting and premise I thought was incredibly ingenious, the writing is very imaginative, the characters, design and personality wise are very creative and colourful and its Ren & Stimpy style of animation gives the world a different life of its own.

There is something about the sketchy and minimalistic style of Ed, Edd n Eddy. It's like an acid trip. The cartoon's humour strikes a balance between whacky and down to earth but mostly relies on its very interesting and varied casts of characters. Its writing stems off brilliantly from a simple scheme of getting a Jawbreaker but it is never dull thanks to its characters and unique animation style.

This show was incredibly insane. It was incredibly insane when it first came out and it's still is to this day. Nicktoons today, particularly Spongebob, owes everything to Ren & Stimpy. It reinvigorated the notion that you can do whatever you want when it comes to cartoons. It was stupid, it was vulgar, it was risqué, it was crazy and sometimes quite hard to watch but you can see how much the fun it was through its insane characters and ridiculous set up.

Will The Simpsons die already? Not trying to be mean but you have to admit, it has overstayed its welcome. Even with that truthful comment, The Simpsons will always be remembered by its legendary early seasons. The early seasons (in my opinion from season 2-10)are undeniable classics. This is when the writing was at its best and delivered so many original and clever jokes and gags that at the time, it was on a league of its own. Nowadays, The Simpsons are hit and miss for me and there is a considerable drop of quality but you can never forget its incredible glory days.

This is a show that always puts a smile on my face whenever I am watching an episode. Archer is the quintessential animated show made just for adults. It's sexy, it's raunchy, it's violently action packed and it is absolutely hilarious. While being a very clever satire of James Bond and other spy films, Archer shines through its top notch voice acting, character relationships, clever writing and rapid fire dialogue. The cast of characters are one hell of a selfish bunch but they are just so endlessly entertaining to watch. I love how the main character, Sterling Archer, is the ideal alpha male and living man's ultimate dream from hot women to hot cars but in truth, he's completely inept at his job but is irritatingly lucky and he's actually just like a little kid with a lot of insecurities.

Being a sequel to a highly revered and much beloved cartoon series is a great burden of a task but The Legend of Korra does not disappoint. Easily the best animated show I've seen in 2012 and a welcome return for the Avatar series. The Legend of Korra takes a more darker and mature approach than its predecessor as it caters for older teenagers, tackling themes of racism and social issues but thankfully still keeps its predecessor's sense of humour and adventure. The writing, while a bit more contained, is deep, the animation is gorgeous and a lot better than The Last Airbender, especially when there is an action set piece and the characters, while less developed, are as complex as its predecessors.

In my opinion, the best comic book to TV adaptation ever, not just animated but overall. The Animated Series captured everything that was good in the comics, from its gothic atmostphere, clever character development and the dark, brooding nature of its writing. The voice cast is probably the best I've heard in an animated show as the characters felt alive thanks to its excellent voice work. The animation was stylish and cleverly blurred the lines between a cartoony look and the comic's visual style.

The most underrated animated show on this list and I am so glad that it has been revived and still going today after it was cancelled. This is the show that I hoped would replace The Simpson as the top animated sitcom but of course, Fox had to ruin everything by cancelling it. Its satire of future life is astonishingly clever, the characters are enjoyably larger than life and its comedic writing, I thought, was way better than The Simpsons.

The go to show for sharp social commentary and satirical lampooning. South Park's writing is second to none when it comes to satire. If there is something worth making fun of (or not), South Park will take it to ridiculous heights and provide a smart commentary while at the same time delivering top notch comedy. Its characters are so whacky and so insane that it always complements the subject matter an episode is tackling. The animation has improved over the years but its still quite bad since characters still look like they're walking sideways but it always makes up with its brilliant comedic writing.

This is the show that I watched the most when I was kid and probably the only cartoon I'd watch from the Boomerang Channel today. Tom and Jerry is and always will be the king of cartoon violence. Even after all these years, Tom and Jerry is still relevant and the shining example of a timeless cartoon. The never ending war between a cat and a mouse never gets old. I prefer the Hanna-Barbera era since the animation was the best, the comedic timing is genius and the music is just classic.

I've already mentioned in one of my other list that this cartoon is the greatest I've ever watched in the last decade. Avatar: The Last Airbender is the best show Nickelodeon has ever produced and no show to this day have topped it, not even its excellent sequel. While most of these cartoons catered to different ratios of kids and adults, Avatar catered to all. The kids can get into its inventive action, light hearted humour, fun characters and varied animation style and while the adults can get into its Miyazaki style setting, the fascinating mythology, the excellently inspired soundtrack, the surprisingly deep writing and the complexity of its characters. Yes, it's not perfect as it does have some episodes that gives it a hiccup and have some production and continuation issues but overall, it's an outstanding American animated show and my all time favourite.
