"That's right. I'm Will Munny and I've killed women and children. I've killed everything that walks or crawls at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill......"
![]() This film could've also been called The Final Chapter Of The Man With No Name, But Now We've Given Him A Name, Punk. The Mighty Celestial's rating:
In my opinion, this is the role that should've won Mr. Washington the Oscar, even more so than Training Day. In this movie, Denzel is Malcolm X. This is one of those rare instances where an actor actually becomes the person whom he is portraying. Denzel Washington tranforms himself into the man who went from being a small time crook named "Little", into the larger than life civil rights leader named "X".
A great biopic that intrinsically depicts the spiritual journey & it various transitions that led a singular letter in the alphabet to become a part of American history books. Definitely my favorite Spike Lee Joint. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() "That watch costs more than your car. I made $970,000 last year. How much you make? You see pal, that's who I am, and you're nothing. Nice guy, I don't give a shit. Good father, fuck you! Go home and play with your kids! You wanna work here, close! You think this is abuse? You think this is abuse, you cocksucker? You can't take this, how can you take the abuse you get on a sit?" "A-B-C. A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing." The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() Because of the severe financial restraints of this picture, the story is forced to be told thru the creativity of all-out action in it's purest, unadulterated form. I think that there should be a law requiring that all big budget action films be shot & directed with as much energy & fun as in this one, before even one cent of the million dollars of special effects is spent. Cool, violent & high-octane action-adventure in all it's bared-boned glory. The Mighty Celestial's rating:
A mexican stand-off. Pop culture laden discussions. Casual cursing with machine gun rapidity. A mixed bag collection of songs that could only be found on a cassette that was taped by some nerd boy who collects comicbooks, works in an indie video or record store & thinks that guns are bad-ass.
All the elements that would qualify a film as being described as "Tarantinoesque". And this is where it all started. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() In a game that's mostly associated with male players, it's ironic that a film which focuses on the women's first professional entry into the sport, would be the one that, for me, truly captures the feeling which best reflects of why this sport is truly an American pasttime: And that is that the purpose of a game is, no matter how political world events may be turbulently transpiring, we can all just escape for a little while by catching a ballgame & then, hopefully, return into the real world with our spirits a little higher & our perspectives a little bit clearer. Because, as we all know by now, there is no crying in baseball. The Mighty Celestial's rating:
A town comes together for one of their own.
Well.... one of their own that came "outta the the abandoned basement of society", which we have all seem to deny exists. Until, the media comes arunnin' to shine it's light of "subjective truth" upon it. A story that starts out macabrely weird & ends up macabrely moving. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() Do you like movies that feature bullets, babies, lots of all-out, gun-toting action & that don't come sunny-side up? Then this is the film for you. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() I tell ya.... friggin Jack Nicholson in this movie, in a role that plays perfectly to his strengths. A mean ol' sunuvabitch with a focused confidence, a black heart & a wry look that you know he wears wether he's describing a blowjob from a female officer or warding off bullets from Cuban snipers in defense of this great country and, more importantly, of his military career. Nicholson does this to such a successful degree, that even though he doesn't really have all that much screentime in this film, the face of Col. Jessup in the witness chair is usually the 1st. image that comes up when this movie is mentioned. And as always, the mark of a great performance is to be able to deliver a line that ends up becoming a part of the culture. And if you don't agree with that, there's only one reason why: "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!" ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() Okay, I know he got razzed alot for this performance, but I liked it alot. When I look at footage of Jimmy Hoffa, Jack looks & sounds in this film alot like the infamously corrupted union leader. But since I'm not only in the minority with this opinion, but most likely, I'm the only one who holds this view, I'll just end my thoughts on this now so that the attention of anyone who reads this will disappear as as silently & quickly as Hoffa's body. Description
This was the year of the gun. Three super kick ass gun movies (El Mariachi, Reservoir Dogs & Hard Boiled) & one that addresses the accumulated consequences on a man's soul after engaging in so many shoot 'em ups (Unforgiven). List cont. 11. Baraka - koo-ooollll......... 12. My Cousin Vinny - My favorite Joe Pesci movie, with a formula plot that works in the way that good formula plot is supposed to work. A plotline with an unplausible situation but with enough strikes at all the chords of the suspendibilty beliefs along with it's fair share of laughs, that it can comes off as almost believable. Not to mention that Marissa Tomei not only steals the show, also looks as hot that she ever has have in any movie. 13. Man Bites Dog 14. Bad Lieutenant - This isn't standard Keitel. This is intense Keitel ( and, as anyone who's seen this movie knows, it's also BRAVE Keitel..... yikes! ). Harvey as a raw, gritty, corrupt, perverted & redempting avenger. And those are alot adjectives to try and fill in just one role. Something that very few actors manage to pull off (and if there's any kind of pun in that statement, believe me, it was unintentional).
