1984: My Top Ten Favorite Movies By Year |

I avoided this film for years, under the assumption that it's subject matter was just something that I would absolutely no interest in.
Then one day, as it aired on one of those "classic" movie channels on T.V., I decided to finally give it a chance, just to see what all that Oscar hype back in '84 was all about. Turns out, this film isn't so much a historical retelling of classical-music pioneer, Mozart as it a homage to the creative process of a genius who's talent was masked by both his almost hippie like eccentricity & by the conservativeness of the times. The ease of Mozart's ability to conjure up music that would stand the test of time was only recognized & appreciated by his "best friend" & rivalous contemporary, the more forgotton Salieri. For me, the true test of any film that centers on the art of artist is the ability for it to make me appreciate (and maybe even like) the art more than I did before I watched the film. Maybe, in my case it was more the result of ignorance than anything else, I wasn't into Mozart's stuff. After viewing this movie though, as far as his music, I walked away with my eyes a little more opened & my ears a little more enriched. Rock me, Amadeus.* ![]() * Don't any of you dare roll your eyes at that last sentence. You knew it was gonna come sometime. The Mighty Celestial's rating:
Ghostbusters is a fun, 80's summer-blockbuster defining sci-fi comedy that not only features Bill Murray at his sharpest & Sigourney Weaver at her sexiest (even though at one point, she does turn into a dog....), but also cool specials effects, a couple of proton packs, sliming goblins, a key master, a gatekeeper, streams crossing, cats & dogs living together, not to mention one really big "Twinkie".
![]() In this story, the dead are starting to rise on the streets of New York. Well, moreso that usual that is. And at the center of it all, is the head ghost demon known as Gozer The Destructor. Who, even in marshmellow form, is still a destructor. So when ol' Goze decides to start giganticly rampaging down through the avenues of the Big Apple, who you gonna call....? Oh alright, I know, I know..... ![]() One overused cliche in a top ten list is already one too many. I'll stop. I promise...... The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() I am one of in the minority who likes this better than the Last Crusade. While I feel that LC's story was stronger & more down to Earth, for me, the Temple Of Doom action's sequences, while many times cartoonishly unrealistic, still were done with a lot of energy & suspense. Plus, IMO, the stunts didn't seem to try to copy the first Indy film as much as LC did. I remember all the hootin' & hollerin' that was going on the theatre during TOD, whereas LC, as exciting as it was, didn't seem to invoke as much from the audience (at least, that was the case when I went to go see it). And when it comes to listing my favorites, there are times where my experience in the theatre tends to influence my take on the film. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() An emotionally wrenching ending, because it's real life & not a script. I was really taken by this film mainly because of the manner that it focuses on those who are easily forgotten in our society & then brings to the surface their raw reality & all the street-life drama & engaging emotion, all at a level that the world of escapism entertainment can never really compare to. The Mighty Celestial's rating:
An alien being comes down to Earth, morphs into a human form in order to understand our species & then begins a race against time to meet with his star-faring rendevous party before the government military can get it's hands on him/it. But not before he/it can get a girl pregnant.
Simply put, this movie is E.T. for adults. Or at least, it's for those of us whose mind's are mature enough to understand that when it comes to traffic lights, red means "stop", green means "go" & yellow means "go very fast". ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
Okay, okay, so maybe the non-musical parts of the Kid's debut film leave something to be desired.
But this 1984 rock 'n' roll anomaly featuring the Minneapolis funk acts Prince, the Revolution, the Time & Apollonia-6, contains concert performances that, along with their charismatically maneuvered dance moves, are some of the most energetic caught on film. And all the songs, every one penned by the main musical mini-might star of this show, culminate into one of the best movie soundtracks ever recorded. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() This film could very well be my favorite movie of the year, if only I ever get the chance to watch the full four hour unedited version which it's director and co-scripter, Sergio Leone had originally intended to be released. As it stands, this story comes off as a bit too choppy & the script a bit awkward. There are missing bits of plot that, I assume, would've better established much more the emotional impact on various story-points. Whenever I watch this movie, I tend to keep thinking on what could've been on screen instead of what is actually there. Therefore, until I get to see this movie in it's uninhibited entirety, this is where it stands for me. The Mighty Celestial's rating:
![]() This was the first time that Ahnold ever uttered those infamous words "Ah'll be bock." And he didn't stop coming bock until we finally elected his blockbuster @ss into office. Well, I guess that's one way to stop an unstoppable killing machine. ![]() The Mighty Celestial's rating:
Initially, this movie had all the makings of big hit: a then up & comer Michael Pare, a very young & incredibly sexy Diane Lane, a bad-ass Flock Of Seagulls lookin' William Dafoe, a serious role for Rick Moranis, a cool soundtrack, all capped off with a script & direction by Walter Hill, the guy responsible for The Warriors, Southern Comfort & 48 Hours. Oh, and Another 48 Hours. And the '85 version of Bewster's Millions. And Supernova.
*groan* So I guess the moral of this rock'n'roll fable is "Tonight.... is what it means to be young." ![]() This is definitely a film that falls under the category of "guilty pleasure". The Mighty Celestial's rating:

Ho whoa, wait a second..... Purple Rain and Streets Of Fire...? Two really campy rock'n'roll movies in one year? Whoa. So this then, is what it must sound like when doves cry. List cont. 11. Places in the Heart - This is the film where Sally Field discovered that people liked her. They really, really liked her. 12. The Last Starfighter - A teenage kid discovers that the video game he has mastered is secretly a celestial training simulation program, when he is notified by an alien who reveals to him that he is a gunner/star-soldier in an intergalactic war between good & evil. So, to all you video gamers out there, don't listen to society when it tries to convince you that all those hours spent on your x-box, gameboy or psp will eventually accumulate into a vast amount of wasted life. For all anybody knows, you could very well be the last starfighter. Therefore, feel free to grab your wii & play with yourself as much as you like. The future of the galaxy may depend on it. 13. This is Spinal Tap 14. Romancing The Stone 15. Blood Simple - Simply because this is the beginning of all things Coen. And in the manner of all things Coen, no more explanation is needed from this point on. And yet again, as in all things Coen, this may be b'cuz of some personal artistic liberty or just b'cuz I really don't have anything to say. 16. Splash - Opie directs Forrest Gump in a movie about a young Elle Driver, back when the California Mountain Snake was just a mermaid. 17. Beverley Hills Cop 18. All of Me 19. Johnny Dangerously - As much as I enjoyed this movie, I saw it only once when it was out in the theatre. Once! 20. The Natural - I'll be honest with you, even though I don't consider this a bad movie, I didn't love it as much as everybody does. But, it's on the list because I needed one film to make I needed one more to make it an even twenty, & it was between this movie or Sixteen Candles. Films from this year that I have not seen but am interested in seeing - The Killing Fields - NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind Other lists by The Mighty Celestial: My Top 20 Female Movie Bad-Asses http://www.listal.com/list/my-top-10-female 10 Movies That Feature A Dancin' Travolta In 'Em http://www.listal.com/list/my-list-9158 Yep.
