Man! I haven't even seen a FOURTH of these!

Good job putting it together :)

Posted: 3 years, 6 months ago at Nov 20 10:34
Thanks! This is a pretty good guideline to all classical, cult and in many ways important films, though many (in my and according to some others' opinion) great films have been left out. So don't worry about those you haven't seen! There's plenty of time.
Posted: 3 years, 6 months ago at Nov 20 12:19
103 out of 1000 isn't bad... I guess.
Posted: 3 years, 4 months ago at Jan 10 17:59
110 out of 1000 here. I think. Maybe a few more or less. It's 1 in the morning here so I'm not that focused. I'm 16 so I guess this is pretty good.

Was Eyes Wide Shut in there? Maybe I wasn't paying attention.
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Jan 23 14:16
Nice list! Thanks for it!
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Feb 8 12:17
I think I kill everybody on this one...I have seen 428 of those movies! For the record, I'm 30 and I still have to watch 70 movies to reach half of it... I have to say it is one of the most amazing list I have seen. There are so many incredible movies that I never heard of before ! Thanks a lot !!!

By the way, if you're 16 and you have seen 100 of them, it is pretty good.

Finally, Eyes Wide shut is not on the list but all the Stanley Kubrick movies from Path of glory to Full Metal Jacket are there.

Hieno lista, mutta missä on viimeinen elokuva eli Sovitus?
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Feb 15 3:42
Kyllä se siellä on.
Posted: 3 years, 3 months ago at Feb 15 9:54

heh, some interesting changes.
I'd like to thank upidipi for keeping the list recent. kudos. However these seem like changes just used to keep the book recent. Sure, these new movies were very good compared to the rest of their couple years, but I don't know how they stand compared to the rest of the movies on the list. I think TDK is the only one that should definitley be put on that list. JMO.

@ vai_tu_22. You're saying you have all 1001 films !! I find it hard to believe... Some of them are almost impossible to find. How old are you ?
Edit: 2 years, 9 months ago
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 28 16:34
I didn't say that ! I said that I found on the net all movies from 1902 to 1927.
I am 16.
But I am sure that I will find all of them.
johanlefourbe je vois que tu ne comprend pas très bien l'anglais si tu veux mon aide pour trouver un film, dis-le moi et je t'aiderai sans problème.
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 28 16:45
joahnlefourbe you're right : "- almost impossible to find" but not impossible.
Like Nike says: Impossible is nothing :D
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 6:28
try finding deseret or too early, too late!
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 9:07
vai_tu_22, everything is quite clear now. I minsunderstood your comment : "Since now I found them all, from 1902 to 1927, I have seen all of them". I thought that after you found all the movies from 1902 to 1927, you had seen "all of them", meaning all the movies on this list. so just a small misunderstanding. and for your info, I'm 30 years old and I have an English master (maitrise d'Anglais pour les francofiles)... so don't worry, my english is fine... mais merci quand meme !
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 9:24
vai_tu_22. I still think that some movies are quite impossible to find. I have 3 examples :

- Méditerranées (1963) (n.399)
- Blonde cobra (1963) (n. 409)
- Last chants of a slow dance (1977) (n.630)

If you manage to see those movies, I won't argue anymore !!
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 9:44
@ Adam F I just found Too early, too late if you want links , send me a private message and I will give them to you :D,
now I am going to try to find the other one :D
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 9:49
Méditerranées or Méditerranée because Méditerranées is from 1999 and Méditerranée from 1963
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 9:52
I found it in french if you want it ... private message
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Jul 29 9:58
@ vai_tu_22
sorry... the correct title is indeed "Méditerranée". My mistake !
Well done if you found it !
I already have about 60 movies to watch right now so I'm not interested but thanks anyway. and what about the 2 others ?
Edit: 2 years, 9 months ago

Thanks, johanlefourbe, for the updates. Even though the updates are - once again - quite useless. I mean, for fuck's sake, what the hell is The Hangover or Paranormal Activity doing there instead of now dropped Fanny och Alexander? Or hundreds of other great movies? The only update I can kind of undestand is Avatar because even if it's only an average movie in my opinion, it has done something for the movies - in a good and a bad way - the 3D hype. But yeah, money is funny, and that's why these useless updates are done. Don't buy the new edition if you already have one of the old ones.

Nice! I see that the list have been updated. Well done ! My score goes down...

total seen : 444

I agree and don't agree at the same time about the updates. I think it's nice to keep the list up to date with the latest releases and to remove movies which don't belong there.

I don't agree with the updates in the sense that, indeed, some useless movies are added (The Hangover, Paranormal activity for example) and we both already know they will be removed the next year. Also, they remove only new movies. I'm sure some old movies could be removed aswell.

Anyway, it still is a great list and my favorite list on Listal.

Posted: 2 years, 3 months ago at Feb 15 12:13
@Belligerent, if your goal is to watch all 1001 as quickly as possible, you're on the right track but personally, I don't see this as a race.

Furthermore, even though I watch a lot of movies, I don't see classics or great movies everyday. I consider it just like drinking wine. If you drink only the best wine everyday, how are you going to appreciate it?

Borat - very funny

Well, I'm a movie hunter I guess you could say, I like to watch 2 to 3 a day. I mean I like other movies too, silly ones like, dumb and dumber, wrongfully accused, but most movies that come out nowadys stink, they're dumbed down, predictable, full of gratuitous cursing and no real redeeming value, so its nice to get up everyday looking forward to great movies from all different countries and times, never knowing whats next. I used to get tired of it like you said, but every since december I've been on a tear, 35 movies that month and I've seen 98 so far this year, I dunno I haven't gotten tired of it yet maybe when I get to 500...maybe.

@Belligerent, you see such classics on youtube?!? It means the quality is shit and you have to watch them in ten parts... I would rather a watch such good movies on DVDs or at least on TV or properly downloaded. But that's a personal point of view...

@Johanlefourbe Yes it is YOUR point of view. If you would simply click on any of my links you would see the movies are in pristine condiiton and crystal clear quality. And even if they are in 10 minute segments so what? Would you rather watch a movie in 10 minute clips at your own pace or not at all because its not available anywhere else? And there are literally thousands of movies from ever director of every country, and not just youtube, video.google and megavideo, it an entire underground network that lots of people who don't have any other access to these classics appreciate and take advantage of. Maybe someday you'll get it, but I won't hold my breath.

I just paid $23,98 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $37,59 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $677 which only cost me $72,13 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CoolCent. com

Basically, as usual, they just add and remove some recent movies... Too bad!

Apocalypto (2006)

Seriously?! Who the hell is campaigning for nutty p.o.s. Mel Gibson over there? And at the cost of Princess Mononoke! Something is seriously wrong.

Ha, not yelling at you of course, johan. But... wow.

Posted: 1 year, 7 months ago at Oct 21 6:04
@Xanadon't, I think 'The Passion of the Christ' is actually an acceptable choice but, even though I liked it, 'Apocalypto' doesn't belong here...

The most annoying is that every year they only remove some decent or even great recent flicks. I mean, there are some older flicks from the 40's, 50's and 60's which could easily been removed but they stay here like forever...

At the end, it is just another list with its default and qualities...

Ace in the hole (1951) ei taida (ainakaan) enää kuulua listalle, jos se onkin joskus ollut. Ei sitä ainakaan löydy tuolta http://www.1001beforeyoudie.com/ sivulta.
Posted: 1 year, 6 months ago at Nov 5 3:07
Finally had the time and energy to do the changes. Thanks to johanlefourbe for telling me about the new edition!

So, the new edition:

Out:

Boogie Nights (1997)
Happy Together (1997)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
The Butcher Boy (1997)
There's Something About Mary (1998)
Traffic (2000)
Moulin Rouge (2001)
Irreversible (2002)
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
The Wrestler (2008)
Precious (2009)
An Education (2009)

In:

The Passion Of The Christ (2004)
Apocalypto (2006)
District 9 (2009)
In the Loop (2009)
Monsters (2010)
Of Gods and Men (2010)
Black Swan (2010)
Four Lions (2010)
The Social Network (2010)
Inception (2010)
The King’s Speech (2010)
True Grit (2010)

As usual, the changes only affect recent movies (yes, even 1997 is recent - for me anyways). And again, the changes are quite pointless and some even disturbing: Princess Mononoke and Irreversible out and Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto and Social Network in? I mean, come on! I would like that they would even once try to shuffle the oldies list and not put movies on the list that will only be talked about for a few years. But easy money is funny money. I think...

Ja Sulo! Ace in the Hole oli kyllä joskus tuolla listalla, koska tuon kautta silloin alunperin tämän tein. En tiedä, että missä vaiheessa mukamas se olisi pudonnut listalta. Pitääpi tutkia asiaa...

@Lee, if after 50 years, we are still talking about a movie, you can take my word for it, it is worth a look and it is the case for about 99% of the movies on this list. You have here some major motion picture milestones here and if you are not interested in them, that is your loss.

By the way,
1. Donnie Darko : It deserves a spot indeed
2. The Butterfly effect : you have to be kidding me... It is not bad but not one of the best movies ever made.
3. Harry Potter : Again... no way!
4. LOTR is on the list...
5. Seven is on the list as well...
6. The Bourne Ultimatum : rather overrated in my opinion, do you really think that this movie will be remembered in 30 years ?!?

Made the changes. Thanks to johanlefourbe - again :).

Pretty pointless update - again :(.

Great that they removed The Hangover and The Passion of the Christ. The Hangover doesn't have any place on this list. Passion of the Christ was a "groundbreaking" movie in its own way so it may have even deserved a place here - even though it is a 21st century propaganda movie, awful shite. I'm sad to see Kill Bill go because it was one of those movies in 2003 that started my interest in different kind of movies, so it will always have a place in my heart.

And then the additions. I think I'm going to the book store to have a look at why Bridesmaids deserves a place on thist list because nobody is going to remember that movie in 20 years. Great to see that Drive has a chance here (at least for a year), it is a great movie. Don't understand why they chose Fincher's Girl With The Dragon Tattoo instead of the original adaptation of the book. Even though I wasn't a big fan, I bet it is more fascinating than another movie from Hollywood. And nice to see Kaurismäki's Le Havre here even though I haven't seen that one either (he is from Finland too).

I also added Trier and Arnfred's Riget (The Kingdom) here now that you can also add TV Shows to movie lists.

And thanks for everybody that still like to comment on this list. Keep on keepin' on!

Yeah, those updates remain pretty pointless, like you said... I remember that 'Apocalypto' and 'The passion of Christ' were added just a few years ago and, now, they are removed again... I still believe that some older movies could be removed but, well, it still remain my favorite list.

I have just watched "To Have and Have Not"

May I add, this should be one of my favorites. Bogart, Becall, Dalio, Hawks, based on one of my favorite novels by one of my favorite authors, but it just comes across as a Casablanca rip off. Other than the first scene, there is very little in this movie representative of the book. The book is about the very rich and the very poor and the hopeless strife of the latter. It could have been so much better if it only dared to tackle the issues the book did. That being said, as a simple Bogey and Becall romance it works rather well... So final rating is:

3 1/2 stars out of 5

Thanks, I'm currently trying to rewatch all of the movies on the list that I've seen but haven't rated, so it would help if this is up to date. The list probably got messed up at some point during the many pointless updates of the book, so this site might help you check what's wrong:

@upidipi, to each is own ;)

Personally, I think "Man with a Movie Camera" is pretty tedious to watch but it has definitely an invaluable historical value so it is indeed a masterpiece.

Concerning 'Drive', even though I enjoyed it, I'm pretty sure that in 20 or 30 years, it will be pretty much forgotten. So, no masterpiece, in my opinion.

I have just seen "La planete sauvage" (n.563)

it was really awesome.
