10 most impressive female performances!

Sort by: Showing 10 items
People who added this item 180  Average listal rating (86 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 7.2
1. Funny Girl (1968)
Actress: Barbra Streisand!

Character: Fanny Brice!

Other notes: Barbra won the Academy Award for Best Actress (which was tied with Katherine Hepburn - This is the first and, so far, the only time 2 actresses have been tied).

People who added this item 1093  Average listal rating (684 ratings) 8.6  IMDB Rating 8.6
2. Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Actress: Gloria Swanson

Character: Norma Desmond

Other notes: Swanson was nominated for Best Actress but did not win. She's also the originator of such classic cinema quotes like "All right Mr. DeMille, i'm ready for my closeup", "I'm big. It's the pictures that have gotten small" and my personal favourite: "We didn't need dialogues. We had faces"!

People who added this item 775  Average listal rating (449 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.4
3. All About Eve (1950)
Actress: Bette Davis

Character: Margo Channing

Other notes: Davis was nominated for Best Actress Award but failed to win.

4. The Aviator (2004)
Actress: Cate Blanchett

Character: Katherine Hepburn

Other notes: Unsurprisingly, Cate Blanchett won the Best Supporting Actress Award. In this film, Cate plays Katherine Hepburn - Which is widely considered the greatest female actress of all time!

People who added this item 142  Average listal rating (84 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 7.3
5. Coal Miner's Daughter (1980)
Actress: Sissy Spacek

Character: Loretta Lynn

Other notes: Spacek sweeped up the Best Actress Award and like the above, Spacek also plays a real life person - Famed country star Loretta Lynn. When Sissy Spacek won the Best Actress Award, it marked one of the only 2 times that an actor/actress & person they were portraying onscreen were both present at the Oscars. The other is Raging Bull!

Happy Vader's rating:

6. Sophie's Choice (1982)
Actress: Meryl Streep

9. Misery (1990)
Actress: Kathy Bates

Character: Annie Wilkes

10. Matilda (1996)
Actress: Mara Wilson

Character: Matilda Wormwood

Other notes: The most youngest in this list and the most natural. Even though she wasn't nominated for any major awards, she won several Young Artists Awards. A very heartwarming and touching performance that sends Shirley Temple back to Year 1!

Happy Vader's rating:

Yes, i'm aware that there are hundreds of great female performances out there but these 10 have impressed me a-lot and believe me, i only see these films just to see those positively stunning performances that can only rarely be matched nowadays!

I think i might whip up a part 2!

I agree about All About Eve and Misery. As a matter of fact, I think ALL the female actors in All About Eve give the BEST performance by a female ensemble.

Regarding Meryl, well I guess you already know which performance by her is my fave. =) But yes, she deserves to win in Sophie's Choice.

Btw what about Faye Dunaway in Chinatown?
