smh no Network or Dog Day Afternoon
Posted: 2 weeks, 2 days ago at Sep 6 5:36
I totally need to rewatch both of those. I remember liking Network a lot and being kinda bored with Dog Day Afternoon. I was in like 8th grade though when I was obsessed with 12 Angry Men, so obviously I was just a retarded middle schooler who didn't understand either film. But I should revisit if just because you've kinda reignited a lost flame for New Hollywood

Network is a masterwork, peerless as satire. Dog Day Afternoon is a just a super good piece of cinema. Cinema, at least "respectable" American cinema ("films", as Bill Maher put it), is the one thing for which I have a nostalgia for what I haven't lived through, as both of those I could never see getting made in this era, and are both really what I want of cinema.

Also, A Seperation is a fantastic, certainly something I don't think there exist a hundred films better than.

I've never seen A Separation. Have been meaning to but right now I'm going to try to put collective efforts into watching New Hollywood and Kurosawa films

Oh wait, this list is missing Chinatown, too? Man, you're really not giving New Hollywood its due at all
Posted: 2 weeks ago at Sep 8 4:03
It's so embarrassing but I fell asleep while watching Chinatown. I was going to watch it again but it was removed from Netflix... will be of utmost importance alongside French Connection, the Lumet Films (along with Serpico?), and any and all Kurosawa (Kagemusha is on netflix so I guess I'll watch it. Red Beard and Ran I still haven't seen though). Oh and Putney Swope definitely, if just for your recommendation

Chinatown is way better than all of those, just everything Hollywood films are supposed to be but aren't because everyone aspiring towards great cinema has to insert their head up their ass. I don't really like late period Kurosawa; Kagemusha is sinfully boring, and the misanthropy at the heart of Ran is just abject sourness mistaken for profound insight. I won't say not to watch them, but if your priority is great films, I'd put those lower down. Idk, I'm in the minority regarding, and again, my opinions on cinema run in opposition to most self-proclaimed cinephiles, so maybe you'll like them (they're certainly not without redeeming qualities).

I'm probably not going to get around to Ran for a bit, I'll watch Kagemusha literally just because it's the only Kurosawa on Netflix. Red Beard is the one I have highest hopes for. Also High and Low looks phenomenal.

Ya Chinatown looked damn good just I was very tired and couldn't stay with it. Embarrassing, I know. Also, better than Network? And I need to watch Rosemary's Baby, I suppose, along with Chinatown (idk how I haven't seen that yet). As far as New Hollywood goes I don't see anything being better than The Graduate, I think it might be my favorite movie (a reewatch will decide). At least, lately I've been thinking higher of it than any other film. I feel the connection to it like what I could only imagine nostalgic stoners do to Dazed and Condused

Redbeard is really amazing for the first half, Kurosawa's best work, though the second half loses me. High and Low is very good, honestly impeccable on the level of creation, though a bit, well, sterile for my taste.

Oh no, not better than Network. At least I don't think so, but Network is to me the work that most encapsulates my world view. I honestly don't even like calling it satire even though it obviously is because I feel it's just too painfully accurate to be put alongside the almost invariably exaggerated crop that constitutes most satire. Not to say isn't impeccably acted and written, but I'd certainly have no problem with someone preferring the style and class of Chinatown to it. It and Dog Day Afternoon are about the same, Dog Day's got more grit and intensity, but Chinatown's just so damn stylish. I found the Graduate very endearing and very fun, though it strikes me as kind of strange how anyone could prefer it to masterpieces like The Conversation, but I guess different art just connects strongly with different people (Nights of Cabiria was a film I used to rate way higher and probably still would than a lot of objectively better things because of how much I loved the bright-eyed sadness of it all and thought the main character like a way better Shirley McClaine (albeit far less physically attractive, though that was part of her appeal))

I'm not about to try and pick apart the Lumet films or Chinatown because I obviously need to rewatch them, but concerning The Graduate, the latter has way better character writing, and maybe my favorite dialogue ever. I also think Dustin Hoffman is my favorite actor (thoughts on Midnight Cowboy?), but it is a deeply personal film if you can relate to it, and it's themes concerning the inevitable path of life for the everyman is incredibly deep. Yeah, The Conversationis an incredible thriller but Hackman and his character are just a notch below Hoffman and Benjamin. I feel you on Nights of Cabiria totally though.
