97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Winner of 6 Oscars and the director is the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director. I thought it was good but not that great. I do like its grounded cinematography style and atmosphere and I really like the look of the setting. The acting is good too but I found Jeremy Renner's character as really unlikable and the story was kind of lacklustre for me. It was somehow trying to convey his psychological state of mind but he comes off being a douchebag. I thought it tried way too hard to be suspenseful but instead dragged out its supposedly intense scenes.

Babel (2006)

69% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nominated for 6 Oscars. Included in the late great Roger Ebert's list of great films. This was a really infuriating film to watch. From the entire runtime, the only thing I saw was a group of dumbass people doing dumbass things, which are interconnected with each other. I get that it portrays carelessness but its stretched beyond ridiculous and I had little to no empathy or sympathy for most of the characters. I would've given this film a lower rating if not for the Tokyo segment, which included Rinko Kikuchi's exceptional performance, the overall acting, and the consistency of the non-linear storytelling. Funny enough, the Tokyo segment has the least connection to the film's catalyst of stupidity, and I was wishing that it was a completely separate film from this.

76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Has a strong cult following. I thought this was going to be a fun and satirical look at heroes in costume. What I got instead is an unpleasant and violent film that takes itself way too seriously with its far fetched premise. While the action scenes are really good and the pacing is solid, I found most of the characters quite unlikeable and unrelatable and the fact that it wasn't willing to take advantage of its premise was its biggest problem. Granted, this adaptation is a lot better than the graphic novel since that one was a lot more ugly and unpleasant with near despicable characters and unnecessary violence.

89% on Rotten Tomatoes. Won the first ever Oscar for Best Animated Feature. As with everyone else, as a kid, I really like this film. As I grew up, I became a lot more distant from it. While I like its take on the fairy tale story and the animation, I thought the jokes were unoriginal and pop-culture heavy reliant and the characters, with the exception of Shrek, were a bore and I'm probably one of the minorities that really don't like Donkey.

87% on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.6 rating on IMDB. Okay, it may look like I am completely contradicting myself with putting this film on the list because I wrote a review for it and gave it a 9/10. First off, the review was not just a film review, but a product review as I was reviewing what the entire Bluray was offering. I gave it a 9 because its behind the scenes content was just fantastic, and was worth the Bluray purchase just for the special features. For the film itself, I think its a good film overall but I think it falls short of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. While the acting is great and had ambition and scope, having too many characters lead to having multiple stories, resulting in it being a bit convoluted with a few glaring plot holes. To this day, I always wondered what Dark Knight Rises would be if Heath Ledger never passed away and continued playing Joker and I'm guessing that it would be much better than what it currently offers now.

97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a film that I used to love as a kid. After watching it again, I was completely underwhelmed by it. While the animation is really good, I thought the pacing was too rushed and the overall story was boring. The characters were okay but not as memorable as I remembered.

87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Won 4 Oscars in technical aspects. Considered an innovative film and one of the greatest science fiction films ever. Um, I don't think so. The idea that we actually live in a virtual reality , clever cinematography and special effects are the film's strongest aspects but the story and acting lets it down quite a lot for me. Keanu Reeves is the most boring actor I have ever seen on screen and while he's a bit better in this film, it doesn't do much and the rest of the cast seemed like they caught Reeve's monotone style of acting and the story felt ridiculously pretentious and full of itself.

Avatar (2009)

83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Won 3 Oscars for visual aspects. Highest grossing film of all time. I'm going to keep it short since other people have already pointed out why this film is so overrated. While a visual juggernaut, the story is a story that we've seen before and is not that very well executed. The acting is quite bland and the characters are more caricatures than characters. Need I say more?

92% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is definitely Hayao Miyazaki-sensei's strangest work. While I think it's quite good, it's not on par with his other works. Being a Miyazaki film, the animation is stellar and one of a kind. The characters are very likeable and the story is a clever adaptation of The Little Mermaid. My problem with the film is that it was just uncomfortably strange. I did found some scenes to be quite bizarre and at times disturbing, especially when the island setting has been completely flooded by a tsunami yet the residents looked at it as an inconvenience. Whenever it tried to be whimsical and enchanting, I was dazed and I thought it was kind of creepy but hey, that's just me.

96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Considered a film masterpiece, particularly in the science fiction genre. I think this is a good film but it's far from a masterpiece. I understand that this film polarised people back when it was released and to this day, still have the same impact. I mostly like the scientific realism, special effects, the Hal 9000 segment and soundtrack but I didn't like its lack of story, vagueness and really slow pacing, especially when its just droning.

95% on Rotten Tomatoes. One of the highest rated films on Metacritic, earning a 98 point score. I wasn't amazed as other people were when I watched this film. The acting, special effects and story are really good though the main reason why it felt short of great is that I thought the balance between the fantasy and the civil war aspect was quite off and instead of complementing each other, it felt like they were fighting for screen time, which was really distracting.

86% on Rotten Tomatoes. I was completely bored throughout when I was watching this film and it's a shame since it's Aardman animations and I know they put so much effort with their claymation style of animating and it looks ambitiously great animation wise. The story was underwhelming, the jokes were sub-par and the characters were completely wasted upon. They aren't bad characters, in fact they are really good but the problem was that they felt underutilised and that frustrated me quite a lot.

These films, in no particular order, are films that are highly revered by critics and audiences but I don't really see why. I don't think these films are bad, I kind of like some of the films in this list, I just think that they get too much praise than they deserve in my opinion. The list will be updated occasionally.

I don't agree with you about on about half of them, but you have very well reasoned arguments.

When I first saw this list the first movie I thought of was The Godfather.

I agree with you on ponyo completely and I am happy that you and I are on the same line here. As much as I praise Pirates, I am getting your point as well. It has its moments when I was happy and then there were some where I was bored. good list, don't agree with you on some movies but you have your right to like/dislike :)

Agreed on most of these being overrated & for the same reasons as you. Glad to see reasons btw, as any overrated/underrated list should have well-explained reasons to justify such claims. ;)

Ponyo was irritatingly cutesy which turned me off of it, though the animation was good (not exceptional in my book & especially compared to other anime films) & the story decent.

I agree on some of this, but especially on Ponyo. I couldn't quite put my finger on what makes me feel uncomfortable watching it but what you said is exactly it.
