Kelis Rogers (previously Jones; born August 21, 1979), is an American R&B singer-songwriter. She is a BRIT Award winner and has been nominated for two Grammy Awards. She became known worldwide for her third studio album Tasty, released in 2003 and has so far become Kelis's most successful album to date. The album also featured her biggest hit, "Milkshake," which became well-known in Western popular culture. Kelis has sold an estimated 5 million records worldwide.
Kelis was born and raised in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, New York. Her first name is a portmanteau of her father's name, Kenneth, and her mother's name, Eveliss. Kenneth is an African American jazz musician, Pentecostal minister, and was a professor at Wesleyan University. Eveliss is a Chinese-Puerto Rican fashion designer who inspired Kelis to pursue her singing career.
Kelis began recording her debut album, Kaleidoscope, in late 1998 and was finished within a year. The album was produced by The Neptunes members Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. It debuted at number one hundred and forty-four on the Billboard 200 and reached the top fifty on the Top Heatseekers, selling over 10,736 copies in its first week of release.
Its lead and most notable single, "Caught out There", peaked at number nine on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and became a minor MTV/BET video hit. The entire album took off in Europe, where all three singles "Caught out There", "Good Stuff" (featuring Terrar of Clipse), and "Get Along with You" were sizable hits. Kelis's colorful style in both clothing and hair received considerable attention.
"Caught out There" entered the UK Singles Chart at number four. With its success, it was decided that another single should be released. A second single, "Good Stuff", was a modest hit, securing a number nineteen position on the UK Singles Chart, although the third release, "Get Along with You", only reached number fifty-one in the United Kingdom, despite Kelis promoting the track there.
Kelis's second album, Wanderland, was released two years later exclusively in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, after its lead single, "Young, Fresh n' New", failed to catch on in the U.S. The video for the song barely registered on American MTV or VH1, but received heavy airplay on MTV2 as well as on Canada's MuchMusic.
According to Kelis, then-U.S. record company Virgin did not understand Wanderland. The record executives at Virgin felt the album material did not have strong enough singles. Unlike those of her debut, Wanderland's sales were mediocre, with just 80,000 copies sold worldwide, and the only single released off the album, "Young, Fresh n' New", only managed to reach number thirty-two in the UK. The album was, however, critically acclaimed.
Tasty is the third studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Kelis, released on December 9, 2003 by Star Trak Entertainment and Arista Records. Considered the breakthrough of Kelis' career, she was able to expand her success across Europe reaching new markets in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. Unlike her previous albums, Tasty opted for a more pop-yet-alternative-oriented tune which led to a greater success outside Europe with "Milkshake" being the first single from Kelis to receive critical acclaim in the U.S. and a peak position of number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The cover was shot by acclaimed celebrity photographers Markus and Indrani.
Kelis Was Here is the fourth studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Kelis, released in the United States on August 22, 2006 by LaFace Records and Jive Records. It involves production by Bangladesh, Raphael Saadiq, Max Martin, Sean Garrett, and Scott Storch, among others, and also features collaborations with will.i.am, Nas, Cee-Lo, Too $hort, and Spragga Benz. The album was nominated for the Best Contemporary R&B Album category at the 2007 Grammy Awards and is also notable for being the first Kelis record to feature no production from long-time collaborators The Neptunes.
Flesh Tone is the fifth studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Kelis. It is the singer's first album since joining the Interscope Records family under the will.i.am music group brand. It was released on May 17, 2010 in worldwide and the United Kingdom. The album is due for release on July 6, 2010 in the United States and Canada.
The album sees Kelis move into electronica and dance music compared to the previous urban sound of her last album Kelis Was Here (2006). The new sound and vision is thanks to collaborations with Ammo, Jean Baptiste, Benny Benassi, Burns, Diplo, David Guetta, Boys Noize, Free School, DJ Switch and will.i.am.
She has also worked with David Guetta on a number of collaborations for the album including the preceeding lead single, "Acapella" which spent one week at the top of the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart and reached number five in the UK.
"4th of July (Fireworks)" is the second single from Kelis' fifth album, Flesh Tone. The single was released in June in North America and will be released in July in the United Kingdom.
