John Barry Prendergast, OBE (3 November 1933 – 30 January 2011) was an English composer and conductor of film music.
He composed the soundtracks for 11 of the James Bond films between 1963 and 1987, and also arranged and performed the "James Bond Theme" to the first film in the series, 1962's 'Dr. No'.
He wrote the scores to the award winning films 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Dances with Wolves' and 'Out of Africa' in a career spanning over 50 years. His other films scores include 'Zulu' ("
M (Judi Dench)'s house in the film is the former home of the legendary Bond composer John Barry. The filmmakers thought it would be a lovely tribute to the late composer who composed many of the James Bond film scores and defined the signature theme music in the series, his work being a core inspiration for the modern Bond music composed by David Arnold. John Barry passed away in 2011. Thomas Newman's score for 'Skyfall' has been said to pay tribute to Barry."
