An American film and stage actor who was the patriarch of a family of famous actors including daughter Jane Fonda, son Peter Fonda, grand-daughter Bridget Fonda and grandson Troy Garity.
Throughout six decades in Hollywood, Fonda cultivated a strong, appealing screen image in such classics as 'Young Mister Lincoln' (1939), 'The Grapes of Wrath' (1940), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, 'The Ox-Bow Incident' (1943), 'Mister Roberts' (1955) and '12 Angry Men' (1957), on which he was also a producer.
Later, Fonda moved both toward darker epics as Sergio Leone's 'Once Upon a Time in the West' (1968) and lighter roles in family comedies like 'Yours, Mine and Ours' (1968) with Lucille Ball.
Fonda had a cameo as a prospector in 'Wanda Nevada' (1979), which his son Peter both directed and starred in.
He received a Best Actor Oscar for his final film role in 'On Golden Pond' (1981) in which he co-starred with his daughter Jane.
Died: Los Angeles, California, USA of heart disease.
