I think it would be good to have different ways of communicating though and with the update feed it can be integrated with that. Another option is adding twitter like micro blogging which also would be integrated into the feed updates.

Sometimes I'm content with just rating an item but in some cases I may want to say a few words about it 'twitter-style' but not want to do a full form IMDB-style review. I realise I could use the review function to in effect microblog my movies but because points are awarded for this the point nazis would be soon on my case. However given that the focus of this site is the media you own or use it'd be better if the blogging could be kept to that, we don't want for example random blog posts about your cat/dog/goldfish. It would detract from Listal's focus which is social catalouging. Maybe a link in each media item to 'blog this' or 'microblog this'. Maybe we need a suitably web 2.0 term to describe this sort of blogging on Listal? Though what that would be I have no idea.
