Listal's A-Z of favourite bands!

Does anybody remember THIS thread? Well this thread went on to create THIS list, which I think is a pretty good community achievement.

I am thinking that we can do this again, but this time by nominating our favourite bands. We'll take each letter of the alphabet and nominate 10 artists in total for each letter. Each member contributes ONE artist at a time and writes a paragraph about why they like the artist. We can't always have ten separate members nominating bands, but please don't nominate more than TWO per letter so we can keep as many people involved as possible.

Additionally, I think it might be good to nominate a favourite song and/or album from the particular band you nominate.

Nominations will appear in this list:
http://www.listal.com/list/listals-z-library-favourite-bands

NB: Bands such as 'The Strokes' will come under the letter 'S'. Acts like 'Louie Armstrong' will come under 'A'

Good luck!

I'll get the ball rolling:

A

1. Animal Collective

Almost definitely not to everyone's taste (even I can only stomach about half of their output), their sound ranges from experimental folk music to powerful noise rock. I'm definitely more a fan of their subdued songs, but their creativity across the board stands out a great deal to me. They're always interesting and it's often surprising to see which direction they take with every new release.

2. Autechre

Always has been a favorite of mine for any electronic group, even though I haven't liked thier last 2-3 albums. I still listen to them frequently and kinda keep wanting to hear what's next from them, even though I bitched about the last album. But Aphex Twin is a close 2nd as well.

Favorite Album: EP7 (Amber is a close 2nd)
Favorite Track: Gaekwad

Adam & The Ants

I was bang into this band a pre-pubescent schoolboy, it was the tribal driving rhythms pumped out by their double drummers. Started as a punk band then were considered to be be part of the new romatic movement when they changed their image, donned fancy costumes & painted their faces. Still to this day nearly 30 years after I first heard them their music brings a smile to my face though I lose interest in the stuff they did once they entered their Prince Charming phase & beyond.

Audioslave

Being a fan of Rage Against The Machine I was saddened to hear of their break up in 2000. But when I heard that most of the band members and Chris Cornell were joining I got excited. And what came out of the project was a fusion of hard rock and soul that rocked my ears.

And One

Pure synthpop goodness. Also a mix of old-school EBM and even military pop. Earlier releases are their best, with the most recent being a big let-down. They're one band out of a handful that's on my absolute "must see live" list. Even though they're German, they have a huge following in Mexico... I'll never understand why.

6.
ABBA
Ahh... Sweet Swedish pop music. Even though I wasn't even born when they came out I must admit that I've fallen in love with their music seeing as I grew up listening to it. Then again I've recently watched Mamma Mia! (the sing along version no less!) and have had their songs stuck in my head because they are just so darn catchy.

A
7. Aavikko
Great quirky and original finnish electronic lo-fi music. This makes me always feel energetic and joyful. Their whole discography is great but my favorite might be Derek!

other honorable mentions: Alcest, Amesoeurs, The Angelic Process, The Arcade Fire, Atrium Carceri, Anaal Nathrakh, Asobi Seksu, Amebix, Antsy Pants

8. The Arcade Fire

A brilliant and fairly new band, whose albums have solidly impressed me throughout. They use such a varied array of instruments and borrow from an eclectic mix of genres, for this, I love them. The Arcade Fire have helped lay the way into reinventing the orchestra for modern music.

Thanks for bumping this fellas:

1. Battles

The technical wizardry of this band never ceases to amaze me. When I saw them live I think I counted them playing three instruments at a time on occasion. Really creative music that is difficult to categorise in any genre other than awesome.

2. Anthony Braxton

Anthony Braxton's output is insane and he's still creating music. He's recently released a 10 CD box set as well as two 4 CD one's so the proof is right there. His music is one that rarely takes form but is something that always has shape. A great artist in pure free jazz genius.

Favourite Song: none
Favourite Album: Five Pieces 1975

*****Don't inlcude this part*****
I can't pick a favorite track for a free jazz artist as there's never really any form for free jazz. Pretty much impossible in my book.

4. Björk

Overwhelmingly creative and controversial, Björk has continuously released some of the most breathtaking music I've ever heard. She's also an opinionated and intelligent woman that isn't the slightest bit shy about speaking her mind. Originally in the Sugarcubes, she went on to form a solo career with a vocal style that's a force to be reckoned with.

7. Black Sabbath

One of the "inventors" of Heavy Metal. Often copied, they had massive influence on the whole genre and accidently created a whole subgenre (Doom Metal). Unlike many other bands from the 70ies, their music stands the test of time and still captivates the listener with it's thunderous riffs and haunting vocals.

(Although it's nearly impossible for me to name a favorite album out of all the brilliant Ozzy-era albums, i'll try:)

9. Beirut

Probably my favourite music artist. Well, at least over the last three years or so. An incredibly talented young musician whose music brings all the fun of a Balkan carnival. He gets my respect for making brass instruments cool again. Beirut's songs are feel-good masterpieces packed with sprinklings of European romance.

10. British Sea Power

Ever since I saw them at Reading Festival, I was hooked. They're not like your average Indie Rock band as they continue to evolve with changing times. It was a tragic shame when Eamon left but the boys managed to adapt because thats what they do! Never confined to muddy waters, BSP have an epic range which can see them afloat for years to come.

1. Coheed & Cambria

Originally I missed out on seeing these guys at the Reading Festival. I was told they were an incredible band with 2 wonderful albums to their name. Instead of taking heed of that persons advice I watched something else. This was a mistake I soon came to regret when not 1 week later I discovered what I had missed out on. Their music is best described as progressive rock,(or new prog) and each song forms a part of an overarching story that all of their work is focused upon. Their songs evolve throughout each of their 4 albums, becoming heavier as the story turns darker and climaxing with an excellent 5 part finale called "The End Complete"

2. John Coltrane

Nothing pleases me more than putting any John Coltrane album on. I'm a hugh lover of jazz but this man does more for me than any other jazz artist and me owning 30 of his releases proves that. His work was vast in the short time he lived and he rarely, if ever, released anything that I'd give a rating of 2.5/5 or lower. A master with the saxophone John Coltrane will be remembered forever and is one of my favorite artists as well.

4. COIL

My absolute favourite band ever. The first song I heard was "Heartworms" off of Foxtrot, and after that I delved as far as I possibly could into as much COIL/COIL-related material as was available to me at the time. Not one single release has been a disappointment, each is extraordinary and the brilliance of the music immeasurable. Even after Jhonn Balance's untimely death in 2004, COIL has still continued to influence a vast number of other experimental and esoteric bands today.

5. The Cramps

I remember The Cramps as one of the first bands I really got into. I have nearly all of their releases, and even as the years have worn on and I've gotten into a lot more music, I still come back to them as one of my favourites. Each release is a psychotic, trash rock frolic through camp and kitsch, and I frickin' love it. Lux Interior just died this past week, but he will always be remembered as one of the best frontmen of one of the most bizarre and unique bands in history.

Nim, I'm pretty sure the C's are an extremely hard list to get through, this and the X Ys and Zs will probably be hard to fill... anyways, out of my probably 300 bands that I listen to... 13 bands are C for me... and the only one I'd even think of putting here would be Collective Soul, but Collective Soul shouldn't be in this list, at least, not from my nomination, seeing as I've only heard 4 of their songs (Gel, Heavy, Runaway Train(Original or Cover???) and Shine)

9.
The Cult
Best Album: Electric
Best Track: Lil Devil

The Cult are an English rock band which gained a dedicated following in their native Britain with mid-1980s singles like "She Sells Sanctuary" before breaking into the American metal market in the late '80s with "Love Removal Machine". The band fuses a "heavy metal revivalist" sound with the "pseudo-mysticism...of The Doors, the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, while adding touches of post-punk goth rock".

&

10.
The Cranberries
Best Album: Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?
Best Track: Linger

The Cranberries are an Irish rock band associated with alternative rock, but the band's sound also incorporates indie, indie pop, rock, post-punk and pop rock elements. The Cranberries rose to international fame in the 1990s with their debut album, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, which became a high commercial success and sold over five million copies in the United States. The group was one of the most successful rock acts of the '90s and sold over 14.5 million albums in the United States alone. The band has achieved four top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?; No Need To Argue; To the Faithful Departed and Bury the Hatchet) and eight top 20 singles on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart ("Linger", "Dreams", "Zombie", "Ode to My Family", "Ridiculous Thoughts, "Salvation", "Free To Decide" and "Promises").

2. Depeche Mode
Best Album: Violator
Best Track: Enjoy The Silence

Depeche Mode are one of the longest-lived, most successful and influential bands to have emerged from the New Wave era. They have had forty-five songs in the UK Singles Chart, as well as one U.S. and two UK number one albums. According to EMI, Depeche Mode have sold over 75 million albums worldwide, as part of total worldwide record sales in excess of 100 million. But more then all that, French kids travel all the way to Basildon in Essex, UK, just to be in the groups old stomping grounds. And Basildon isn't great - so the band must be! :-)

Death In June is one of the first bands I think of when given the genre neofolk. Also one of the first neofolk bands I got into. Earlier releases are their best in my opinion, with Nada!, having a more electronic sound, being absolutely essential. With an endless list of DIJ releases under his belt, Douglas Pierce has also worked with numerous other neofolk and experimental artists over the decades as well.

It's one of my favorite bands, but I think it's kinda hard to talk about them here, 'cause the most important thing about their music, for me, are the lyrics. They use a lot of schemes and other figure of speech, like alliteration, assonance and antithesis. The earlyer albuns are more... experimental, I don't know, more noisy, but the recent ones are "cleaner".

Owen Pallett sings music heavily reinforced with epic sounding violins and plinky plonky pianos. This off beat and optimistic sounding freak folk is always refreshing to listen to.

7. Fleetwood Mac

Appearing in many top 50 rock band lists, this groups most successful periods were the late '60s with Blues music and '75-'87 with more pop-orientated songs. As the band line-up changed, so to did their music, which kept each album fresh and new. Just wish 'Albatross' had appeared on an album so I could nominate that one!

8. The Flaming Lips

I'm never in a mood where I wouldn't fancy listening to The Flaming Lips.
Optimistic bubble sounding music supported by electronic beeps supplies them with happy tunes to sing along to.

Of course, as must be expected, their lyrics often aren't as flippant and surreal as they may first sound. As the band addresses issues in our world, but they do so without taking themselves too seriously. Which is a nice change :-)

9. Front 242

Pure EBM industrial. This is THE band I think of when given the sub-genre EBM (electronic body music). They pioneered the way for other EBM and industrial artists and some members are still involved in several electro-related scenes today. I remember blasting this in my car in my teenage years and it brings me back to those days when I put any of their albums on now. Ah, good times. :)

1. Garbage

Their debut album, Garbage, was an unexpected smash, selling over 4 million copies and certified double platinum in the UK, USA and Australia. Garbage won the Breakthrough Artist award at the 1996 MTV Europe Music Awards. This really is music for a certain mood, and in 1995 it fitted the bill perfectly for me. Today as a mature nerd/geek I can still appreciate Shirley Mason, this time as a T1000 Terminator (The Sarah Connor Chronicles - TV Series).

4. Go Betty Go

All female band, they sounded to me like they weren't just following a cliche and generic style common in pretty much every single girl band in existence. IE mega butch lesbians like Kittie or ironic man hating bull shit like Alanis Morriset. These girls just sung about living in LA and I liked their leads voice (though my mrs hates it... and she is probably right.). Sadly the lead left the band and now they have a mundane sounding generic girl band lead singer who ruined the whole thing for me.

There are few albums that I can lose myself in, Godspeed seem to know how to make music that takes hold and grabs you until it chooses to let you go. Godspeed have hit the nail on the head, creating stunning orchestral tracks that can go on for 30 minutes or more, they're geniuses and the pinnacle of their genre, so much so, they've probably redefined it.

Swedish rock band that first grabbed the public's attention in the early 2000s as a prominent group of the garage rock revival, playing garage punk. Their mainstream success came with the release of the "greatest hits" album 'Your New Favourite Band', featuring their most well-known song "Hate to Say I Told You So". First, I wanna thank Grand Assault for the invite to the thread. i've been really busy lately, but this looks like a great thread! My "H" nomination might be really obvious, but it ought to be mentioned...

Jimi Hendrix.

Arguably one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time, his song-writing is often overshadowed by his guitar. My favorite album is Electric Ladyland. That record is a trip. If you've got a rainy afternoon and nothing to do, put it on and tune out. Wonderful stuff. So sad that he passed so soon. If Band of Gypsies is any indication, he had so much more to offer.

8. Herman's Hermits

"I'm Into Something Good" reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 13 in the US in 1964. Why do I like them, the band has a double H title, meaning we are one step closer to getting to I's. But more then that they suit Listal as The Hermits appeared in several movies, including When The Boys Meet The Girls (1965) and Hold On! (1966). They also starred in the film Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter (1968) and were one of the performers in Pop Gear (1965). So this is it for J? Otherwise I would have nominated:

Jane's Addiction

An alternative Rockband from Los Angeles formed in 1986. The members of the band are as different as one can imagine and this transfers directly to their sound. Unfortunately it also tranfered to their relationships and so after one EP and two albums (which included the hit single "Been Caught Steeling" and one of the greatest songs of all time "Three Days") they broke up in 1991. A faction of the band realesed another album in 2003, but it was only last year that the original line-up has once again reunited to play exclusive shows, jam and re-record old material.

But if that doesn't count anymore I will have to wait. None of my favorites begins with K...
