Posted : 1 month, 4 weeks ago at May 12 7:59 - I was just thinking that even though we all like Media 'Items', we aren't all adept followers of each one. How about we rank out of the 5 distinct types (Books, Games, TV, Music, Films) and see which you devote most of your time too. Start with the medium you love/spend most with running down to the one you appreciate the least.Gunza Blazin 1. Films My Golden Goose. I've always been an avid watcher of films, while my youth consisted of watching the same 40 odd films hundreds of times. I managed to grow beyond that with Sky :-). There was no film I wouldn't watch, I'd try and watch anything that had the slightest grasp on my wavering attention span. I even took one of my A-Levels in Film Studies and was a brief member of the BFI. My current quest is to watch 2009 films by 2009. Indicated by the Collection Stat on my profile; so thats 2009 in total for my life. While I lost a few (and can't remember!) during the datalog error. I intend to complete the task with flying colours. 2. TV My Day to Day. I wasn't a massive TV fan before I went to University. I'd watch a 'show' if it was on but wouldn't make a habit of it. However, I got hooked on certain programmes and managed to keep up to date with them throughout the past 4 years. I even explored other shows just to fill gaps between seasons. TV is quite an expansive medium which I feel is its main advantage over Film. 3. Games My Specialist Meshalist. I only stick to a certain genres with games. But with those particular genres I am quite fanatic and obsessive. I try to explore other avenues but they just aren't for me. I've got enough consoles but not enough decent games with longevity to play on them! I managed to dabble in most of the popular titles so that I understood them but games like Command & Conquer and Final Fantasy are my specialties. 4. Books My Current Fetish. I won a 'Special Readership Award' in Year 7 for my reading habits but then there was a massive gap where I didn't read anything obsessively. However, since I started commuting for work, I needed something to pass the time and reading was my solution. On a single day journey, I can read about 40 pages. So I plan my book selections around this so I can finish them by a weekend. I'd probably rank this above games but I haven't read nearly enough of to compete with my extensive gaming over the past decade and a half. I'm on a reading quest for this year, I want to try and read 26 (1 by fortnight) new books by the year end. I'm currently on schedule. I've read 9 bookms this year and just started my 10th which I need to finish by the end of the week! Check my lists if you don't believe me! 5. Music My Achilles Heel. I could never find the time for music, its so integral to everything but I just don't appreciate my ears enough to bother with it. I'm also a hater of radio. Ever since my degree where I had to waste 4 weeks studying, going to lectures, seminars and burning my ears off for it and then it not being on the final exam! It ruined me. I have only bought two CDs in my entire life. The Blues Brothers Soundtrack and a Penny Stock Single of Will2k! So how do you rank the Media Types of Listal? I genuinely want to know! |

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago at May 12 11:44 - I really like this idea GB...it does define the person in a way1.TV I am an absolute tele addict. I just adore TV and like my favourite shows more than most of my favourite movies. I et totally swept up with soap operas and crime dramas in particular. I dont tend to download my tv programmes, I like to watch them when the TV guys say I should. I have a biblical knowledge of The Simpsons and spend way to much of my spare time watching the old box....you learn so much from TV though, and I know I could never settle down with a man who didnt love to sit with a tea and watch crap as much as I do. I've been known to sit on the phone to my friend while we both watched/talked about a show. It truely is the opiat of the masses. 2.Music I'm really proud of (most) of my music collection. I love how much more personal music is than any other media. I darnt leave my house without my Mp3 in my ears; lest some drunken hobo tries to talk to me...it always happens. I love my commute into uni, watching the world go by witha good tune on the background. Music is the perfect complement to being in the real world, just like TV and games are the perfect way to escape it. Plus I sing and dance quite often like Bacchas himself. 3.Games I cat really explain my love affair with the video game. I think its just become part of my life from very early on. The ultimate escapism I suppose, plus shooting Nazis can be very cathartic. It appeals to a part of me that really does want to be the world greatest hero. Walking down the highstreet thinking; 'nobody knows I took out 8 german tanks with a selection of badly damaged panzerfausts, and went on to play a major part in clearing the way into France for the normandy landings'. 4. Film I hate to put this so low, but I have to be honest. I go in fits and starts with my film love, I love a well made and captivating film. The trouble is of late, few new films have caught my attention; so film is drifting out of favour with me atm. I think its hit a bit of a dead end atm, and maybe this summer will change all that, but it certainly is not becoming the master of media it once was. I think new movies will have to step up the game if they want to compete with the already saturated media market. One suggestion, keep Adam Sandler out! 5. Books I just have so much reading to do at uni; I dont have the effort to read for pleasure. This is pure laziness on my part. I cant be stopped when I'm into a good book; but I rarely put the effort in to find and begin a book these days. |

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago at May 12 19:40 - 1. BooksI'm an avid reader of books. I love books. I love reading. It's always been my momentary escape. I can't take a movie with me half way around the world and have it keep me occupied for hours upon hours. Actually I can but it wouldn't be as easy. 2. Music I might not own alot of music in terms of amount of CDs but I do devote alot of my time listening to it. It's best used in conjunction with reading I've found but when the going gets good it's sometimes best to listen to it as is. Or while doing household chores. 3. Films I love movies, I really do. But only the ones that are good, or if not good epicly bad. In fact most of the things I've been borrowing from the library lately are in fact movies. Of course I only get to watch about 60% of what I borrow since I lack the time but I try my best. 4. TV I suppose I like watching TV alot but it's hard for me to find time. The only shows I followed while it was airing of recent date was Project Runway, and even that I didn't watch religiously. What I like to do is to find a show I've heard good things about and watch it on DVD. That way I skip commercials and the waiting of a week to watch it. But that's not to say I've given up TV entirely, I watch it when I can but for the most part I just wait for the DVDs. 5. Games Pity games have to be so low on my list. I do devote myself alot to certain games at certain times, but not often. It's even harder for me to devote time playing a game than watching a movie. I'm still working on "beating" Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life for the Gamecube. I got it several years ago and am only at year three or something. |

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago at May 15 16:57 - 1. TVI tend to watch television far too much, i prefer it to film because to me, i want to watch the characters progress over a long period of time. 2 hours, or say 6 lots of 2 hours, feels far to rushed, it leaves out all character development and doesn't allow for threads that can come up ages later, most threads in films tend to come up within the next hour making them predictable, or not giving you enough time to forget that it was there. Obviously a lot of television can be predictable too, but when it is well written i get far more enjoyment from watching an episode of my favorite tv show, than i do from watching a particularly good film. 2. Games This would be my second, mostly because if i am not watching television i will be playing a game. I prefer this to film and sometimes television even, because you get to interact with the story. I tend to play large games where you can add your own creative input to the story, be it making your characters stronger, doing things in a different order or leaving out certain people etc. It is far more interactive which keeps me amused more. 3. Music If i haven't the television on then i usually have Music on too, i love to sing along to the words much to anyone else's distress! Again i like a bit more thought in my music for example my favorite band uses their songs to tell a long story spanning 5 albums or so, and several graphic novels. The songs are accompanied by some excellent guitar work and vocals which fit my tastes (higher pitched voices mainly) I tend to try and find something special about a band i like really. 4. Books Much like with my TV addiction, i prefer books that are part of a long saga of books. My favorite series is the dark tower series, and my other favorite is the Alex Cross series, both span over years of writing and have extremely long stories to them. Although Alex cross solves a different crime each book, his life and families lives are continuous throughout the books. I do also read singular books, or books which aim to teach you something. Books are my favorite way to relax, especially before bed, it helps me focus my mind on one thing before falling asleep. 5.Films My biggest weakness. I just cant watch films often!! If someone puts on a film, or we go to the cinema i will watch a film and enjoy it whilst it is on, but i instantly forget it within a week, i never remember character names, and can give you a rough outline of the plot and how it ended etc. I am incapable of truly grasping the entire thread of a film the first time i watch it, iv gotten better over the years but at one point i could watch a film for an hour and not have a fucking clue what was happening!! This put me off of films for ages, but i have tried to improve upon this, and i can now actually follow and grasp a film fully from start to finish. But i am still rough on remember if i have seen a film by title alone, someone asks if i have seen "film" and i say no, then someone points out i watched it with them 2 months ago and i suddenly recall something about it. I have seen films of course and thought they were incredible, but equally i have seen films dubbed incredible and found them boring and over hyped. As i said above, i often feel like films are too fast, too much is cut out of them etc to fit the normal time slot etc. I prefer to have everything possible and more. Familiarity is a key as well, if you watch a film and its 1 or 2 sequels then thats it, you are left with those 3 for eternity. I cant re watch a film iv already seen, i can barely re watch a tv show iv already seen, but with television i do not need to as there are so many different episodes etc. |

Posted : 1 month, 3 weeks ago at May 16 4:32 - 1. TVI'm not quite the TV addict I used to be but I do still watch a lot of television - mostly procedurals and sci-fi stuff. I prefer it to film much like rb6k because of character development. Often times the story matters less than learning more info about characters (unless the storyline is totally sucky). 2. Music When I really thought about it I realized that music deserved a higher ranking because I listen to it a lot - at home, in the office. I have eclectic tastes in music but I'm going through a classic rock phase. My goal this year is to do more album reviews. 3. Film I prefer going to the cinema than watching film on DVD. The whole experience of sitting in front of the big screen with popcorn produces a more visceral reaction. But a lot of movies are throwaways - I tend to forget most of them a few days after watching. But a good film is immensely re-watchable. I've watched Aliens 20 times and it's still as good. 4. Books I used to be a bookworm when I was younger but these days I'm lucky to average one book a week. But there is nothing better than curling up on a Sunday afternoon with a good book. My reading tastes are in line with my tv viewing tastes - crime/mystery novels are my cup of tea. 5. Games This is waaaaaaaaay down on my list because I don't play a lot of games. Seriously the highlight of my gaming experience (if you can call it that) is playing Zuma :) |

Posted : 3 weeks, 4 days ago at Jun 14 6:13 - This is a great thread, well worthy of a Phoenix Down.1. Music I'm listening to music almost every hour of the day. Whenever my computer is on it's rampaging through my extensive list of MP3s. When it's not broken, I usually take to the streets with my MP3 player. It's definitely my forte, though my tastes are pretty obscure and I'm regarded as pretentious by most of my buddies. Electronica and post-rock genres are my favourites. 2. Films I can go through long periods of time without watching films, they're not really essential for my survival. Sometimes it takes great lengths to get me to sit down and watch them, but I don't really know why. I guess it feels a bit restrictive knowing that you can't do much else whilst watching them. Favourite genres are wide ranging, from cheesy 80's action-fests, through War films and science fiction classics right up to pretentious indie gubbins. I think Westerns and musicals are the genres I pay least attention to. 3. Games My time at University was pervaded by games, gaming marathons and I even lived with game designers. These days I don't really seem to have the time to get into new games, but now I certainly have the PC hardware to expand my collections, I think I'm going to try my hardest to get back on the scene. A next gen console might even be on the cards soon. 4. Books I enjoy a good book, but it's always a struggle to sit down with one. I can spend longer looking for the next book to read than I ever spend actually reading it. Reading if fulfilling and liberating, and the achievement that you feel from finishing a book is immense. Sometimes I can't get into another book for a long time because the characters just wont be the same from before. All in all though, I don't read enough. 5. TV Shows Aside from the odd comedy, quiz show or sports programme, I have little interest in TV. With the exception of The X-files, I don't think I've ever followed a drama over a long period of time. Over time, characters are dragged too death and are often handled by different script writers and as such - they become warped and lose their interest. I prefer a film because a character is more succinct, the director knows who the character is, what he will be and exactly what he will achieve over the next two hours. You can't build a character up one day and suggest what he'll be doing nine years down the line. |

Posted : 3 weeks, 4 days ago at Jun 14 7:53 - 1. BooksAs a child books were always my thing. Classic literature my speciality. I spent hours projecting onto 'Little Women', 'Little Lord Fauntleroy' and 'Jane Eyre'. My taste for such things has changed little, luckily the pool of classics is large enough to last me. I also have a love for the surreal, novels that take a twist on the mundane of the everyday and produce heroes from within it. Books just allow the opportunity to personal interpretation that films can't. So many fictional books have shaped how I piece together information, form my perceptions and shape my personality. 2. Films What I like most about films is the style and manner they are shot in. I like how that gives the film an individual feel, making it the director's own personal coloured view that you can step into. I'm not good at retaining quotes and even story lines often dissipate in my mind. But I always retain particular scenes, moments and feelings that captured me. 3.Music Growing up in a house where noise was banned I resorted to playing classical music and musicals, validating it by claiming it helped with my violin practise! Thus, I have a large gap in my knowledge which I fear it is too late to fill. Instead I take little bits from my friends and make my own makeshift tastes. I always take music around with me, but find very little time to sit down and listen with full concentration to it. Post Rock, Classical, Electronica and Jeff Buckley-esque music prevail. 4.TV Shows I just don't seem to get the point of most of them. A few years ago I was determined to try and set out to follow one series from start to end. This coincided with the coming of 'Lost'... I'm still holding fast to it...just. I also fail to switch on at the same time each week and find it a chore to have to do so. Sunday night currently offers super programmes on China and Russia though. 5. Games Again its the amount of hours that have to be set aside and allocated to playing. I fail to feel a sense of triumph and achievement after completing a game. Instead I feel guilty for wasting several hours in a darkened room improving the agility of my thumbs. |

Posted : 3 weeks, 2 days ago at Jun 15 16:46 - 1 TVI love TV, and would love, eventually, to write for it. There's a certain ammount of snobishness about it in some quarters, but I think it's a fantastic medium for telling compelling, sometimes thought-provoking stories to a wide audience. Favourite TV includes: Doctor Who, The Second Coming, Messiah, The Long Firm, Sapphire and Steel, Callan, I Claudius, and many more... 2 Books The only this isn't first, is because I generally don't allocate enough time to be able to read more than I watch TV. I've loved to read, right from an early age, and a deep part of me is always suspicious of people who say they don't. It's as though they have a part of theirself missing. Many a good book has proved a valuable companion, through times good and bad, and I find you can escape into them much easier and more deeply than you can with a film or TV piece. Favourite books include: The Stand, The Trial, The Man in the High Castle, Fatherland, and J G Ballard, the Complete Short stories. Plus many more. 3 Film I do adore a good film. Partly for the same reasons as I love TV, but film affords a greater scope and, I think, can sit well between book and TV, in terms of being able to get into the particular world being shown. Of course, some films can be be epic and spectacular, but not too taxing, allowing one to just relax and 'switch off' whilst watching - which is sometimes good! Favourite films include: The Pianist, Schindler's List, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Usual Suspects, Commando, License to Kill, Goodfellas, The Godfather, and many, many more... 4 Music I like music, but am not a dedicated follower. I just dip into it until I find something I like, really. Some favourite music includes: Faithless, George Michael, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp. 5 Games Don't have much time for them, and don't currently have a games console, so not really fussed about them, to be honest. I've enjoyed a few in my time, though, including: Streetfigter 2, Llamatron, Lemmings, Duke Nukem trilogy (plus 3D), GoldenEye: Rogue Agent, Medal of Honour, and some others... |

Posted : 3 weeks ago at Jun 17 22:48 - 1. FilmsGenerally, I watch 1-2 new films a day. I spend most of my money on either DVDs, hiring movies or going to the cinema. Sometimes it's also spent on buying a new shelf to accommodate my expansive DVD library. In the future I want to be a filmmaker so I want to expose myself to the strengths and weaknesses of films I have previously viewed. If all else fails I will write reviews for a publication or something. 2. Games When I'm not watching movies, I'm probably playing a computer game (or a PS3 game). At the moment I'm quite obsessed with the Half-Life series. I finished HL2 in three days because of how addicted I became. In the 5 years of my Half-Life obsession, I've completed the first game at least 150 times, the second about 100 times, and the two episodes thus far succeeding HL2 about 60 times respectively. 3. TV When I'm writing reviews or playing a game, the TV is usually on. Frequently it's the news or some rubbish soapie my parents are watching, but sometimes I watch the occasional TV show. Firefly and Family Guy are currently the shows I will put on at any time simply because of how fond I am of both shows. During the school holidays over the period of December/January that commenced 2007, I spent my days playing the computer with the Ashes series of cricket in the background. That was a memorable summer (in Australia, summer is during Dec/Jan/Feb)! 4. Music My iPod is either playing a movie, a TV show or a slice of music. Music relaxes me when I'm stressed or doing homework. I also have music playing when I'm writing a review and nothing worth watching is on the TV (lately I watch a film and review it while watching it a second time to solidify my knowledge on the events and anything I missed the first time. Music is a rarity now). 5. Books I haven't read a book for about 3-4 years. I simply cannot be bothered anymore. With the stress of school and the interest in films, my attention span does not extend to quiet reading. The last major obsession with reading was 4 years ago when I read Matthew Reilly novels non-stop. He's a great author, but my interest in reading disappeared in the long period between the release of his latest books. |

Posted : 2 weeks, 6 days ago at Jun 18 16:07 - 1. MusicMost of my interest, time and money is devoted to music. It's the one thing I care the most about and it's an extremely important part of my life. 2. Film I spend quite a bit of my spare time watching films. If I were to add up all the hours in my life I've spent watching them... well, it would certainly be a lot! I mostly rent as opposed to buying DVDs. 3. Games What I do when I don't quite feel like doing anything, if that makes any sense. As I'm pretty picky about what games I do play, I can delve into one game and play it for hours on end for several days. I think I've logged about 375 hours on FF XII and going for Order of Ambrosia. Lots of time and work. 4. Books I used to read all the time when music and film didn't matter so much to me. In middle school and junior high I could take a novel easily in a day or two. My book collection used to be quite extensive, but I've lost most of them along the way... 5. TV I watch zero television as I don't have cable. Of course I have a television for gaming consoles and watching films, but I haven't watched a cable television show in several years. The ones that I do watch are older ones that come from DVD sets I've bought. I just have absolutely no interest in the drivel that's on TV. |
