When/How did you find Listal?

Simple, you tell everyone how/when you came across this website. Don't forget, Alt Accounts don't count!

It was recommended to me by a friend. Everything from the Collection Database to the List Making is right up my street.

I was a member from January last year up until March. I had my final months of Uni and a dissertation to write so I just put Listal on hold. After some 'hardworking' and some proper party hard shennanigans, I came back around July and have added yo my account since then.

Your turn.

One of my friends at school made me join in April of last year. I think the 24th.
And I quit, then came back.

I used to have 3 accounts keeping track of what Listal keeps in one. Then on a random day of surfing, I discovered Listal and have since become addicted.

A friend of mine on another forum recommended it to me. I didn't think it was my kind of thing, but I quickly got hooked. I like enhancing the music database these days.

I was trying to make a CD devoted solely to songs about coffee. I couldn't find a certain song by War Rocket Ajax, and them I came across Wyrmslayer here, who had the CD, an voila.

I was looking for a place to keep track of all the money I've wasted that was free. It took me about three days of internet searching before I found listal. You wouldn't believe how many people pay for this type of service.

I actively looked for it, a place to catalogue all my movies (DVD sites won't do cause 2/3 of my movies are on VHS), the same way I use rateyourmusic for music. I didn't like what IMDb offered for cataloguing.

I searched the RYM boards for "rateyourmovies" discussions, googled for more discussions and comparisons, and checked out the sites on what kind of titles they had in their database, specially "old" and "foreign" films, and also compared how many ratings they'd received. Listal came the winner.

After joined (about 5 months ago), I realised you can add any film in the IMDb to your collection, the films amount to a proper "catalogue" not just a list of ratings, you can use tags to organise your collection, and that you can make lists (both private & public). A few days ago I was pointed out that I can add personal notes to each film title, which means I can use Listal to keep track of which films are on which videotape.

So basically Listal works for me.

The "discover" aspect is still a bit lacking, because there isn't exactly an active community of people with similar tastes to mine having discussions and writing reviews etc. But I'm sure this'll change. On the other hand, I use Listal for wanted lists, shopping lists (prices in different stores included in comments), as well as watching/uploading trailers so Listal does actually help me discover movies.

How's my typing getting along?

That is the most weird and interesting excuse I've ever heard and would love to hear what songs are only about coffee.

Anyway there was a site called Guzzlefish that I tried to use to list some of my collection and it went down so I went looking for a new one and found Listal.

I came across this site by getting on one of my friends Yahoo Accounts. I ignored it then...But when Ana and Takara tryed to sign me up I said "I already made an account." As soon as I came home from school I made my account (this was in augest 2007) I became friends with Lots of people. I deleted my account many times but came back. That's My story.

I'm pretty sure a podcast recommended it to me. (Unfortunately I don't listen to podcasts as much as I used to back then). I could be wrong. Either way the main reason was to stop my so called friends "forgetting" to return things to me.
I've been here for almost two years now I suppose. Sigh... and I still lose stuff (although not as much as before).

I don't really blame him. If I were to compare Listal to how it was when I first got here to now it's alot different, and I'm not talking about all the fancy new things Tom has added.

And 'sides not everyone has something to add to their list every day.

I was searching for a social networking site for book lovers and came across Listal listed on some website that was cataloguing all the different types of websites. I um'ed and ah'ed about it for about a week, did some reading, investigated some other sites and then thought I'd join for the hell of it while I still looked for a book lovers site.

There was a DVD collection thread on the Atari forums. At first the thread starter practically forced everyone to link to a dvdaf.com account rather than cluttering the screen with marathon-sized posts, but someone popped in and out with the link to Listal and, after joining, I tried my best to drag everyone else into it.

I used to catalog my movies offline (collectorz.com software) but it was a pain to let my friends and family know what I had. I tried a few other online sites that only dealt with movies, but once i found listal, i was impressed with how quickly its admin made changes and added improvements, and impressed at how near fully-open the database was, so we can add/edit our own pictures and movie posters. and that's when i got off crack and smack; i now had a new addiction :)

I came across Listal in early January 2007. There's an intersting story behind how I found it actually! I was surfing Yahoo images for Mallrats images because at the time I had an addiction to finding as many photos from the movie as possible. I still do that but very rarely now. Anyway, I found Listal on January 10, 2007. I was at my local library and it was close to closing time so I decided to create my account the next day. The photo that linked with Listal was this photo from a book titled "Mallrats", but this book had no connection with Kevin Smith. I actually have some of this up on my profile which says: "I actually found Listal completely by accident! I was searching for images on Mallrats and I found a weird book with MALLRATS as the title. I clicked on it and I looked around the site and was impressed with it. The rest is history!" So from there I began to become obsessed with Listal. It was also a little over two months after I joined that I found my girlfriend Jenn here on Listal!! If it wasn't for Listal I would've never found the love of my life!! She's made me so happy! :) Listal is a special site for me. That's my story!

I used to keep the list of books I want to read on an excel spreadsheet so this is WAY better.

I got on the site after my brother told be about it. He reeeally likes making lists, so it was right up his alley. Funny thing is that he put in some things here and there and then I went all crazy and added tons of stuff so I'm way ahead of where he was. Granted I was single when I started entering this stuff and he is married with kids... who says I had too much time on my hands?

Now I'm done school and will try to be on here more often, maybe get my girl to put more stuff on her list too, it's slightly addicting.

Lolz, Unfortunately TA, you are somewhat wrong. There isn't just those who found Naruto and those who found Lists. I originally found this place because of Naruto, but I didn't join because of it, I joined because i realized it had information that would prove useful(Hundreds of movies, TV shows, Books and Games) though, I'll admit, at that time I had no concern for contributing. But I did fill in a lot of tags for the books I've read ^^. And I wrote a few amateur reviews. And I am Ermm... In the process of making lists, though none are done lolz

Omg... I just realized... Why am I always in the middle? The only thing I am not in the middle for is brothers... I am the older, but there is only 2 of us lolz

You're not in the middle Wolf-Paw you just took the side against me. Don't think you are neutral because you're not in a flame war.

I originally found this place because of Naruto

Therefore you fall into 'finding this site by looking for Naruto; (you admitted it yourself!) and not because you were looking for a Collection Database. Which is what Prelude was referring to here:

I think the above two replies show why there are two distinct groups on here. You have people that found listal to manage their collections, and then others that found it when by googling up naruto.

That is a generalisation but it rings true with the majority of vocal people on the groups/website.

I use LibraryThing to keep track of my book collection & in a discussion on one of their forums about similar sites to LT, Listal was mentioned. So I clicked through, signed up & am still here. Listal for me is by far the best cataloguing site on the whole of the intertubes because you can keep track of ALL of your media collections.

I hesitate to say social cataloguing site as I think the social side is what lets Listal down. Yes it's got all the social features you would expect but the site doesn't seem to attract many 'serious' or 'power' users, the sort that would use LT or Goodreads for books, Discogs & Rate Your Music for music or Flixster for movies. Maybe that's because Listal is a sort of jack-of-all-trades site but given it's vast array of features it's a little surprising the user base isn't higher.

I think single category sites do a lot better in terms of marketing unfortunately, it's easier to spread the message of a site for movies or music rather than a site covers many different categories. To be honest I've wondered for years if I should split the site up but I decided to stick with this concept. I've also wondered many times if I should just go all the way with the multiple category concept and allow listing of most things (e.g. electronics, applications, places, websites etc...)

escafeld

Rank : 23

Posted : 4 months, 1 week ago at Jun 30 19:28 -

As far as multiple categories goes then Listal is the clear winner in terms of types & breath of funtionality that users are given when listing their media. However there's a definite trend within social media for people to not only list what they're doing but also say a few words about it, microblog or micro-review activity.

At the moment Listal allows you to select a movie say you've watched it & give it a star rating. As a minimum you can watch, listen, read an iem etc. You don't have to rate or review it. Why don't you raise the bar?

If someone wants to add a movie, dvd, music item, artist, director etc etc to any personal list then you MUST rate it & MUST do a review, minimum 4 or 5 letters. Basically the user is being forced to say a few words about about whatever item/thing/person they are adding to their watched, heard, seen, used list etc. Not talking about a full blown review here. 4/5 letters minimum but something MUST be said about anything that's being rated otherwise it can't be rated. Of course give the user the option once they've done a micro-review the option to produce a full blown essay type reviw if that's what they want. Provide the option.

Anyhow just thinking out aloud above. May make sense or not but something to expand on & discuss further if folk are interested.

I have actually been thinking of adding an option of 'micro reviews' on here. A lot of people have been against really short reviews in the past but as you say there is a trend favoring short form content with twitter etc..

I would not force people to write reviews but would like to make it easier to add them.

On the bottom right for human beings/bands etc on listal is the option to add a comment, but in my experience that feature doesn't work. It could function as the shout box style feature you're thinking about. You could slip the section underneath the reviews section on movie/book etc items as well for people to have their says. The only problem with making it compulsory is that if a new member joins and is carving through the thousand or so movies they've seen in their lifetime, it might be a bit daunting.

Another possible reason listal is apparently behind more selective sites is because the onus here is still most definitely on movies. The books section is a minefield and along with music is in need of a serious merge/clear up! Though it's advertised as a multi-platform it's still biased towards movies.

I'm going to experiment with changing the design of the item/person pages so the post review box is at the top with a link to the full review page when people want to write long reviews.

I can't remember how I found Listal but we should try and get the word out about it. Every time I type Listal into Yahoo I get "Did you mean: Listel" which seems to be a popular name for a hotel.

Checked my online footprint several months ago, used a site which listed and rated Listal highly along with social websites I use, so checked it out.

I found it after searching the internet for a way to keep track of all my stuff. There are free and commercial desktop applications that didn't cut it for me. I tried fumbling some thing together with Google Spreadsheets and forms and I even tought myself some PHP & MYSQL to make lists. Man, Listal is hard to find. But now I finally found it and I am going to have a blast! Hopefully it is accessible from my iPhone though...

I was searching for a place to manage my watched movies & ratings online, so I googled a long time until I finally landed here. That was about two months ago and now I'm totally addicted. :D
The only think that's annoying me: I've rated over 2000 titles, but didn't pay attention to the tag-function. I want to manage my movies by country, so it will take a lot of (nerve-stretching) time to mark them afterwards...

But when I'm done with that, I'm looking forward to follow this nice community with full attention. :D

cheers!

It was recommended by a friend who doesn't get on here anymore.

I joined way back in the day, when the Anime people were everywhere.

So I quit for awhile too, once they were kicked out. Alot of them were my friends.

But I decided to come back again.

Well, i looked and looked using all kind of combos in google to find a website that suite my needs since i think IMDB is very poor when it comes to community, then out of nowhere...in a site i don´t really pay attention and browsing tags i found someone linking this site, and when i read the description i though to my self "well...lets give it a try, maybe it wont be a waste like the others".

It wasn't. I´m here, and I'm loving it because it fits all my needs.

Ps: I also learned how "Not to hate" delicious :p

Ps2: I hope Listal is here to stay!
