Suggestion: MINIMUM age requirement to use Listal

Prelude VIP Moderator Rank : 2	Posted : 4 months, 4 weeks ago at Mar 25 13:59 - I strongly suggest we impose a minimum age requirement to use listal. 13 should be absolute minimum in order to comply with US laws of online child protections, but between 13 to 16, we should require parental consent. This should be retro-active to ALL current users on listal. Aside from legal issues such as children being exposed to swearing, talk of an adult nature, and occasional sex-related images that can be found on people's profiles or screenshots, there is also the degradation of Listal value by allowing any child on here. Poor reviews, idiotic ratings, and spam-filled groups are just some of the highlights. This user, for example, is only 11 years old: http://www.listal.com/groups/viewthread/7848/ and pretty much every post she starts is mind-numbing.

Ideally I'd like to see anyone under the age of 14 go, even with parental consent; they cant be observed 24/7 and some of the forum content is innapropriate for under 14s, well (16 really, but Im being realistic). However getting rid of the 11 and 12 year olds is the biggest priority atm.

Also it clears the site's responsibility if a 13 year old reads a rape or suicide thread (as is(was) common on here) - we can say they got parental consent to join. But right now, the site's screwed from a legal standpoint. Also, we already know MOST of your ages. ;) and new users answer a birthday question, and then they will get a blocking cookie if they are too young.

I didnt have the internet at 13, it didnt exist at home untill I was 15/16. A childs development is down to its parents, peers and teachers, not some randoms from a reviewing website. If anything these kids need a good kick up the arse. They can develop on the playground...did you never watch 'Hey Arnold'?

To be fair, most of the issues with rubbish on the "groups" section are being dealt with anyway and really it's just a case of complying with law. It does need to be done pretty soon though. There's plenty of kids with a bit of sense around and there's no need to get rid of them just because of a couple that're acting up.

I'm disagreeing with the notion that listal owes it to the children to be some kind of emotional nanny. If a kid can grow up right with rationing and the blitz, it can grow up right without listal. Besides there are plenty of sites out there specifically designed for young web users, to enhance their safe browsing techniques and communication skills. If anything its more important to their development to get them off the net and into youth clubs or the cotton mill. But this is just getting way off topic now.

I don't think the sweeping comments about teenagers are particularly helpful though. This site's attracted some that've proved pretty immature, but it's unfair to say that about all kids. In fact, even some of those who've been acting up in the Anime/Random Chat threads've in the past've been talking fairly sensibly in the last couple of weeks. I'm not suggesting Listal should be or is some kind of Nanny and I think there's still too much slack given to people - but it's worth remembering that with sensible rules (three strikes and you're out) you'd simply ban those who aren't mature enough, while allowing others to use the facilities as appropriate. I couldn't care less either way at my age, but it's worth thinking about. On the side topic - I started using PCs at the age of about 4 and the internet at about 11. Caught onto things fairly early!

Most of the top members on Listal seem to be about half a generation ahead of me. The kids in my district are educated on how to use a computer before passing grade school. True, I wasn't apart of this site then, but I still learned alot between the years of 12 and 16. But Thilian, seriously, you are being kinda wishy washy. I think the age should be a firm 15. 11 is ridiculous. Show me a 13 year old who wrote a decent review, and I might change my mind. I was 16 when I joined this site, so please don't make it 17. 16 is a fine age. 15 should be ok too. How is talking about wows new patch deletable? Hmm. Well, seeing as how this site has absolutely NOTHING to do with online games, that's how it's deletable. To be honest, for all of you people that are over like, 30, and say that you started using the computer at 16, things were alot different back then. I'm 17, started using a computer at age 10, and right now, I'm confident I already know more than my dad. You have to talk to someone that grew up in this generation, say, an intelligent 17 year old? ;)

I started about 5, I used to play on my moms computer, then I got my own computer but It was a Windows 93 and it didn't have internet, so I was stuck with boringness, then I got a brand new computer last July AND Internet service and I found this site a month after surfing the web with this computer, and here I am now ^^

They're not completely artificial, though I have personal experience with a kid in AB that wants to do nothing in his life but play on the computer. At the same time you got these angstridden teens posting all kindsa EMO suicide note stuff on their profiles, while clearly using the site for messaging & chat only. I don't like the equation. But I'm probably just paranoid about this.

It's pretty impossible to enforce in any non-invasive stringent manner. It might highlight the point that they're not really welcome at a site like this though if they're that young. It's also a valid reason to ban someone if they're breaking a law by being here.

So as you can see there are your figures for who is worth keeping.

And maybe the collection pages more exiting? I like my profile too, but I'm willing to make sacrifices. Or was the situation as bad before the improvements on profile pages? edit OK, maybe a bit harsh. I do really like the way Listal looks. But some people's profile pages DO look a lot like myspace, and you can't tell the purpose of the site by looking at their pages. So it's easy to understand why people get confused.

I take it that it hadn't occurred that U-18s aren't likely to have seen/heard/read/played anywhere near as much stuff as those that are older, so it makes sense that they've "contributed" less.

Tom doesn't like .gifs either. He said a simple rule for profile pages being readable might surface eventually. Voxy deletes without reasons or stepping in. Don't get me wrong, she deletes the right threads but unlike Prelude she doesn't lock threads for all to see. The mods and Tom can still see deleted threads.

I seem to be taking young ass kicking listal traits into the real world! Some kids were throwing sweets at a train station employee today, swearing and shouting. I went over to them and told them they were embarrassing themselves and to f**k off back to playschool. They apologised and murmured under their breath then sat quietly until their train came!!
