I dare say that a great deal of their success comes with the British love affair with bands with strong northern accents and 'edgy' lyrics. They aren't exactly a bad band and I can tolerate them on the radio, but already their first album is being mentioned in the same breath as Nirvana's Nevermind and Led Zeppelin's Four. That's just not right. Beirut, now there is real music compiled by a talented musician. The reams of awful bands listed in this thread (Papa Roach? HIM? MCR?) are all typical of a 14 year olds music taste I guess, but most definitely something you grow out of.

Just about every song gets cut off at the end, with incredible portions of the rest completely chopped off. Every word is apart of the song - all of them. It's like they're giving us a book to read after mindlessly ripping out multiple chapters. Censorship can be described using much of the vocabulary it skips over.

I listened to them when I was younger (regrettably) and they seemed to be just a bunch of guys making average music. They certainly put nothing into their image, then they reinvent themselves for the 20th century and come back with a bunch of trendy haircuts and awful politically charged songs. It makes me ashamed to be a part of the same species as the people who fall for these blatant marketing gimmicks. Feel free to replace Papa Roach with Linkin Park (we suddenly care about the environment because it's a popular issue), Lost Prophets (we suddenly felt like dressing in matching outfits and getting out Toni and Guy haircuts) or any other generic pop rock band. The list of ridiculous cliches goes on and on.

Looks like the type of thread that's never supposed to disappear, standard fixture on sites like these, like favourite movie or favourite writer. Good beginner-friendly thread. For me, it's a constant tug of war between The Stooges and The Stones. The Stooges used to have the obvious upper hand, because they had the good grace to break up at their prime, leaving a legacy of three faultless albums and an unparallelled notoriety. Then Iggy messed that up by re-uniting the band and releasing a pointless crap album.

The dark, ethereal metal is very easy for me to relate to musically. When first I listened to Mer de Noms, I heard the Hallow and thought Okay, this is different. This is nice. But when I heard Magdalena I was beyond compelled to sell my soul, my self esteem a dollar at a time for each new album - pardon the lyrical reference. :)
