Listal Points?

Phoenix Angel 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 14 3:49 -
What are listal points used for?
coyoteblue 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 14 4:47 -
For the moment, nothing, except the satisfaction of knowing that you are #whatever out of 8,000 something.
Hotstuff Files 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 14 15:14 -
Not a bad idea, if people like these type of things!

They may be used to grant people access to things, e.g. edit product, in this case will help stop spamming an vandalism.
chuckmuck 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 16 17:33 -
Can/will you see other members' points or rank?

Browse members then sort by points, will add it to the profile as well.
chuckmuck 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 16 17:56 -
Ah, I see. Thanks Tom :)
Phoenix Angel 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 19 3:18 -
I don't think I'll be trying to add points then.

What would you like them to do, any suggestions of things they could be used for?

This is probably really far fetched, but having them eventually tie into on-line shopping or gift certificates or something would be amazing. Obviously, this would only work if you could get someone to sponser you like Amazon or another on-line retailer and donate them, etc. Otherwise, maybe after a certain point cut off you get access to editing database records to fix titles, etc.?

!!!

I don't know what is up with these double posts. I swear I'm not trying to milk forum posting points.
coyoteblue 18 years, 7 months ago at Oct 19 14:58 -
Basing Edit access/Moderator privileges on points is a good idea. Somewhere in the 20,000 - 30,000 point range I think (maybe 10,000 would be more reasonable, maybe too reasonable).

Open edit access would lead to 'Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria'.

On the other hand, the product image thing seems to be going ok; I haven't noticed any abuse.

Which reminds me; wasn't there a thread about points where Tom said he was going to add "adding product images" as a point-generator? Is that still on your list, Tom? As someone with not a lot of points, but who's added what feels like a ridiculous number of product images so that none of my items doesn't have one, I think that'd be swell. Unless, of course, it leads to abuse of the whole product image system, which would suck. Maybe if you make it just a few points each, it wouldn't be worth it to do it just for the points?

If you find something to do with the points I'd try to get more points but until then I have no use for the points.
Anonymous 18 years, 6 months ago at Oct 21 19:23 -
For some reason, my points don't appear to be adding lately; I recently did two reviews - one definitely hasn't had the points added for it, and I'm pretty sure the same is true of the previous one too. My total points as displayed on my profile haven't changed, even though the bit that tells you the various ways of gaining points has been ammended accordingly. Anyone else finding this?

* Zoikes, that's probably an overly long-winded way of saying it

** Yes, I've given it the hour to change etc.
Anonymous 18 years, 6 months ago at Oct 21 19:27 -
Oh, well I got me points for posting 'ere, so maybe t'is just review points not showing?

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that you only get them for lists specifically titled "favourite books", "favourite dvds" etc, and not for ones like "Favourite Doctor Who Novels". I can't find it in any of the old threads though so maybe I imagined it :|

I can verify that Tom recently said that the 100 points are only for the main favorites lists. However, what Richard A. Booth seems to be referring to is reviews, not lists. For that, I have no idea.

Oops, I completely misread what he put.

To make things more complicated, I just created a favorite games list (from the link in the points section) with 6 items and have not been rewarded 100 points after several hours. So on top of the review problem that Richard A. Booth wrote about I am now having a similar problem with favorite lists (which Dan initially thought Richard was talking about). However, to even further obfuscate everything, I have written 2 reviews today, both of which I was given my 50 points for immediately. Welcome to Bizarro world.

So, to summarise: points are fucked up at the moment?

They are recalculated when you hit the homepage so whatever the problem is as soon as it is fixed they it will be corrected :)

Sorry?

I am just saying that the points are calculated when you view the homepage rather than being allocated when you do something (e.g. when you review something). I will investigate why it is not calulating certain things correctly.

If your sorry means "I'm not following", I think he is saying that the point value for a given user is calculated each time you log in from scratch, rather than it being an existing number that gets added to each time you earn points. This (if I'm understanding it correctly) is pretty smart because (as Tom says) when he fixes the broken bit of code, everyone's points will fix themselves, basically, instead of him having to go back and add in everyone's missing values that should have been added while the script wasn't working properly. Did I get that right, Tom?

Ooooooh, I see! :-)
salmonmoose 18 years, 6 months ago at Oct 24 5:34 -
I too, am not receiving points for my favorites list.
Anonymous 18 years, 6 months ago at Oct 24 9:17 -
I still haven't had those points for those two reviews, either - and my ranking doesn't apper to be moving. I'd have thought I'd have moved either up or down in the last few days...

You can actually see how many points you need to move up in rank by clicking on "Browse Members" at the top of any screen and then choosing to sort by Listal Points and then update the list. By doing that, it looks like you need to get up to 4114 to pass anyone. Hope that helps.
Anonymous 18 years, 6 months ago at Oct 24 12:54 -
Oh, I didn't know that - thank you kindly, squire!
DefenderOfKnowledge 18 years, 1 month ago at Apr 19 3:38 -
I'm moving up in the world!

*starts singing* I wanna be the very best! Like no one ever was!!!!!!!!

Actually, the points kinda motivate me to do more. I like em. Now if I only had more of em.....lol
