Police Quest series: Yet another classic Sierra series.

I have mixed views on this series. PQ1 was amazing, the best start of any of the Sierra series, but PQ2 was a big disappointment when they removed the bird's eye view drive-around-town feature. PQ3 and PQ4 I never bothered with because they tried to make it look 'cinematic' but it looked so cheezy, i just wished they stuck with cartoon characters like Leisure Suit Larry and Space Quest did.

p.s. is anyone finding these lists useful and fun, or is it just me? lol

Custom lists are so handy, I can't wait to see how Tom revamps them. If properly accessible, such lists can become a lot more powerful and useful than regular search results.

One more awesome series:

King's Quest series - from version 1 to 8, include all remakes and collection editions, with every entry full of screenshots and videos.

I'll start on a couple platformers. Sonic the Hedgehog, Castlevania, and Mario for now, if the third's possible. Then I'll do Ninja Gaiden and Rayman, and maybe even Wario and Gex.

Mario would be a doozy, that's for sure. lol

A tip, if you're making lists, only add one version of the game, and try to add the most approriate one. There's so many dupes floating around.

I'm off for the holidays right now, so over next week or so, I plan on tackling the following series: Half-Life, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and if I feel insane to the membrane, maybe even 'The Sims' *shudder*

p.s. I edited the first post to add mine (and other people's) lists so they are easier and quicker to find.

You're going for some good ones there, Prelude. I was planning on doing the main releases, not re-s or compilations (that don't add extra content, of course). That and I'm sorting it based on initial release date. Autosort would be awesome for lists (though criteria may need be edited duly).

Rayman
Sonic the Hedgehog

I hope you don't mind the way I did it, with initial releases on the main generation consoles and a small exception for re-releases that add original content. I'm not sure if the ones you've done overlap in that way, but Sims is sure to.

It doesn't matter how you did it, or even how I did mine, because its easy for anyone to make their own lists to suit. It is hard to figure out which versions to add and which not to, but I agree with your rule of thumb; if it adds content, then its 'new', but if its just a 'greatest hits' or 'best seller' re-release, that's just shovelware and doesnt belong. :)

For PC games, some 'Game of the Year' editions are nothing but re-releases with new packaging, and others actually have new content. I'm doing Half-life now, and the bloody folks at valve kept re-release a 'new' platinum edition everytime an add-on got created. the first had 3 games, the 2nd platinum had 4, and the 2002 platinum edition had 5 games. technically, they all belong on the Half-Life list, but man, is there ever lots of shovelware out there!

A good place to sort out all the revisions (along with great covers and screenshots) is mobygames.com

You're right about Moby Games.

Castlevania
Gex
Ninja Gaiden

I'd like to reserve Godzilla's video game history, though I'm sure it won't be anywhere near as monstrous as the big M's.

Thanks. Another tip for anyone else planning on doing lists is to add items backwards based on how they're planning on sorting it. If you don't know why I say this, you've obviously never attempted to have a sorted list of fifty items or more.

Half-Life series: This one is quite big, and includes all editions, re-releases, add-ons, spin-offs, as well as two upcoming awesome fan-made remakes - Half-Life: Decay and Black Mesa. I left out Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Portal since they have nothing to do with the actual Half-Life universe. I also decided to make new entries for certain 'bundled' items such as HL2: Deathmatch, HL: Source, and HL2: Lost Coast, so people can rate them invididually and review them seperate from Half-Life or Half-Life 2.

update: I delete the Half-Life console series and merged it with this list. It probably keeps it cleaner and more organized by showing all PC and console versions in one list, just like my Call of Duty list later on.

The Sims series: done! Jesus Mary Mother of Joseph! those guys at EA/Maxis sure know how to squeeze every bit of $$ from all the Sims addicts out there. And this is just the real releasese, bonus packs, expansions, and all console ports. I started another list for all the delux, combo packs, and collection editions.

The Sims shovelware series: In order to keep the above Sims series somewhat uncluttered (even though it stands at 59 entries!!), I decided to make a separate list of all shovelware that EA/Maxis throws at Sims fans. These are combo packs and compilations and collections that contain different expansion packs. Expect a lot more from Sims 2 (there's not many Sims 2 combo packs yet) once Sims 3 comes closer to release.

I'm afraid that due to the unrealistic image on the cover of many celebrity magazines, as well as the pressure from cliques made up of snooty and insecure young women, I'm going to have to binge for both Mario AND Wario. I plan to lose the full weight eventually, of course.

Mario Kart
Mario Party
Wario Land
WarioWare

Expect one for Mario Land and concurrent NES and handheld appearances, including Donkey Kong and Pinball, the next time I feel the need to conform to society's expectations of what a young lady should look like. Even though I'm a young man.

I'm not adding PAL or UK versions of games, and also leaving out Mac and Linux versions. If there is a PC game, and then xbox/ps2/gamecube version of the game, and then PAL version of xbox/ps2/gamecube, well, it can get quite a massive list.

I mean, these lists are more for myself to help sort out game series, and since i'm not in the UK and don't come across PAL versions of games, I'm leaving them off the lists. But maybe if Tom gives up some sort of master public list, or ability to group all sub-versions of games into each item, that might help.

If I get a chance, I'll make seperate PAL/UK/European version of my lists.

Harvest Moon
Pokemon (main series only)
SimCity (stuck to PC versions as there are lots out there)

I felt like adding what little I could since very soon I'll be back at university and too busy to add much to this kind of thing. :( I might tackle the Worms series tomorrow if I can sort through the different versions to form some kind of understandable list. ;)

Here's an old school classic list: Dynamix classic simulators. Dynamix was part of the Sierra group and in the early to mid '90s, they ruled the simulator genre with mega hits such as Aces of the Pacific, Red Baron, and Aces over Europe. Hope everyone enjoys this list, as I've had to add about 80% of these titles manually into Listal. So if you remember these titles and have played them, rate them please.

Another nostalgic classic series: MicroProse classic simulators. Do check out the mini-novel I wrote up in that list. :)

lots of great faves of mine in there, such as F-15 Strike Eagle II, F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0, ATAC, and Gunship 2000, although my favorite classic heli sim was LHX: Attack Chopper (not a microprose game so not in that list). Also, in the early '90s, I stopped caring about MicroProse releases, since I was so hooked on those Dynamix flight sims games in my other list.

Thanks for doing this thread, I would love to see more opinion based lists e.g.

Worst game endings ever
Most controversial game releases
Best game releases of 2007
Worst game cover art
Most influential game releases

etc...

I am redoing the list system right now, it will be easier to change large lists, you will be able to add notes on each item and many other changes. It's going to look a lot better as well.

Prelude

VIP

you read my mind. I just posted a long thread on all things I'd like to see changed for custom lists, and you've addressed most of them (add notes and easier edits of large lists are definite pluses)

And I was thinking of branching out into 'theme-based' lists, evolution lists (say, evolution of the flight sim, or evolution of the RPG genre).

It would also be nice to have a dynamic 'Upcoming game releases' list, and when the release date passes, it gets automatically placed into a dynamic 'New releases' list. And this can also be applied to movie releases.

Tom, are you going to just launch the site one day, or do you want me to test it out on a seperate server?

actually, i was going to suggest to Tom to remove (or hide) the UPN/EAC number. does anyone out there even bother with it?

maybe some collector's out there are so anal as to read the barcode off their items, but it seems a bit far fetched, IMO, and just adds to the clutter.

what would be more important is seeing developed by, produced by, maturity rating, PAL/NTSC, Genre, and think like that.

but to answer your question, no, i dont bother with it, i leave those fields blank.

Due to the stress and self-satisfaction involved with doing heavy lists, I'll finish up all the promised game series and promise not to reserve more than I can handle in the future.

Godzilla
Super Mario Bros.

The last one admittedly isn't finished, but I've almost breached the N64 era so it's as useful as anything. I've taken care to only include games that Mario is playable in while excluding most of the frivolous sports titles. I'll do more Mario for sure in the future, but this is the mainstream list.

thanks, saski.

two things I noticed, minor things, but maybe it can be fixed up:

1. You have two Sonic Hedgehog 2 games on the list, on is PAL, and the NTSC version is at bottom of list.

2. There's a few PAL Resident Evil games on there, when everything else on the list is NTSC.

here are the two NTSC games that should be there instead of PAL versions:
http://www.listal.com/game/resident-evil-2-playstation-17446
http://www.listal.com/game/resident-evil-3-nemesis-playstation-16535

3. You accidentally have the PC version of Frogger on your Playstation list.

other than that, great job. I'll add them to my main list at top.

One of my most proudest lists (had to create a hell of these from scratch): Dungeons & Dragons - The Classics

It includes all legendary 'Gold Box' SSi titles that were release in late 80's / early '90s.

I left off this list as DOS gaming was ending and Baldur's Gate was just about to launch, so this list is aprox 1988 to 1998.

My next list will be modern D&D games, beginning with Baldur's Gate and onto NeverWinter Nights 2 (and onwards).

I will make a seperate list of all D&D titles released on consoles (these D&D lists are only for PC Gaming), but it's on my back burner for now.

You've gotten a good deal of the Sims lists done here Prelude, but while clearing out Duplicate consoles I noticed this for a great deal of games that could either be transferred to PC Games or simply labeled Duplicate. I thought you'd be a better judge of this than me.

I'm not following, Thilian. You think Mac titles belong under PC Games? If so, I disagree. Technically even Commodore, Amiga, and Atari ST are 'personal computers', but I think that 'PC Games' should imply only DOS/Windows versions. In fact, I'd favor splitting up the massive PC Games section to DOS and Windows as there are many titles during early Windows years that had both DOS and Windows versions, and some DOS games that got ported over to Windows in future years.

I wouldn't have known, so I stayed clear of the situation. Like I said, you'd be a better judge. I think I'm turning some titles from PC games to PC just from searching for them to add images. I've fixed the damage though.

I decided to abandon my Gamespot Editor's Choice 2007 list, because after going thru the list, i discovered they smoke too much strawberry tobacco and drink too much red bull. They put Super Mario Bros. 3 as one of best of 2007 because it got released on Virtual Wii Console. They lumped Orange Box PS3 along with Xbox360 and PC versions, even though the pathetic framerates on PS3 version make the game unplayable thru some parts. They rated Halo 3 a 9.5 and Bioshock a 9.0 when every respectable gamer out there says it should be the other way around.

so anyways, i deleted that list, but i never finished it anyways so no big loss. i'll look for other sources for top 2007 releases.

I've been trashing duplicates out the wazoo. Until Koji Igarashi announces a brand new Castlevania game, cancels it, announces another one, cancels that one, and finally announces one that's actually released to the general public, the Castlevania list is pretty much finished up. There is one blank Castlevania entry that should be for the Commodore system. I'm planning on sprucing that page up, and I might even include it in the series list for the fact that it's graphically done over. Though the list is officially complete for now because no one cares about the different versions of the original Famicom title.

Prelude, it's pay back time.

To everyone who's already made list, thanks a ton for making this thread so popular and finding it useful, but just a quick suggestion: if you've already made a list, could you go back and fine tune it with some personal commentary on the titles that are most important to you, with the new 'add note' feature?

see the example in my latest list:
http://www.listal.com/list/star-control-series

obviously not all items need to be documented, but if some of the best entries in the series are given a bit of commentary, it brings life to the list, as well as makes those major key entries stand out more.

I'll be going thru my older lists, but first, i want to finish up 'Most Controversial Games' and add detailed note to every entry (big task, but it helps to explain WHY they were controversial).

Also, I'm going to start a thread in listal development for a suggestion: allow commenting on individual items in the list, rather than the list itself (if that's possible). So list creator get 'ADD NOTE' option, and everyone else has 'ADD COMMENT' option at each entry. and list creator would retain power to delete comments if they want to. so if you have thoughts on THAT suggestion, post in listal development thread.

I just re-read Thilian's Castlevania list, and its brilliant. I think we all would do well to aim for the type of narrative he achieves here. Hitting not only on the overarching story of the series, but taking the pains to describe the changes in structure, gameplay, and quality of each release (though I hope he gets to play out the later chapters, to give us his impressions of those as well). This is what a well done list should do (at least in my opinion). Bravo.

Another new list:

Elder Scrolls series

I originally added all EU/UK/PAL versions as well, especially since many of the older games are (incorrectly) on people's lists as the wrong version, but my list became way too big and distracting from its main purpose, which is to list all Elder Scrolls releases and not every single Elder Scroll version in listal's database. If anyone wants to make EU/UK/PAL versions of any of my lists, please do so, but I won't be bothering with them and will rather hope one day that we have sub-items showing all versions on each item's page.

I've decided rather than make separate EU/UK/PAL lists, but also rather than to completely shunning those versions, I will go back thru my lists and add any EU/UK/PAL variants of the most popular titles only. This way, my lists should get the most exposure and usefulness, and it saves me from going thru and trying to figure out which title had a PAL version and which didn't and manually adding missing PAL versions of some titles. If someone wants to make separate lists for EU/UK/PAL, please do so, but I will make mine as stated above.

What do you guys think of something like this?

http://www.listal.com/list/classic-dos-series

I'll make a few more series, such as 'FPS Shooter series' and 'Role-Playing Fantasy series', but basic idea behind it is to link up the original titles of each related series, and also to server as dynamic master lists rather than relying on this thread to list all lists.

As you may notice, I'm also adding a real nice intro to each series, as well as link to the listal list directly. If anyone wants to help out and make some master list similar to this one, such as a 'Nintendo series' list, or 'Survival Horror series' list, or so on, or even help me in writing up intros to certain lists, let me know.

A very important list for all Adventure Gaming fans:
http://www.listal.com/list/recent-adventure-games

Basically, it's a list of all recent (2002-present & beyond) Adventure style games, the point-n-click variety that everyone just assumes is dead and get near zero media attention. Well, there have been many great titles recently, and as a bonus, I've also added links to other lists, mainly for DOS classic adventure game series.

do check it out, adventure fans. I know you're out there.

also did a few other game series:

Simon the Sorcerer
http://www.listal.com/list/simon-the-sorcerer-series

Alone in the Dark
http://www.listal.com/list/alone-dark-series

and to give people an idea for other types of lists, here's one I've started up:

Pirate-themed games

Finished an official Myst Series list:
http://www.listal.com/list/official-myst-series

but because it got so big, I decided to make a related list as well called 'Myst Essentials'. Might start doing this for all other big lists.

removed all UK/PAL lists (those lists are linked via the main lists anyways) to clean things up a bit in first thread, and made a new category, 'Born at the Arcade'.

Ricky, for starters, these lists are done on volunteer basis, so if you'd like to see something, ask for it. dont' be rude and shout.

and secondly, these lists (series) are more for .. um.. series. or did that fly over your head?

how do you make a list?

On your My Games page it'll say Create New List in the olive green box at the bottom-left. Click it and pick your list's name. This'll be at the end of the list's link even if you change the title, so try to get it right straight off.

When searching items, make sure you check out the results and clarify which belongs on your list and which doesn't. The order of the list's items depends on the purpose of the list. Alphabetical could be proper for a list of movies available online for free, but chronological order is more appropriate for game series. No auto-sort function is available at the moment, so a knowledge of the list item's information or willingness to research it is necessary.

Adding notes (by clicking Add note near the item on your list) is extremely helpful, creating much more meaning to the construction of an entire list so it isn't a tag with visuals, so to speak. An item description has always been available, where notes as to the list's overall purpose can be included as opposed to specific notes for each item. Editing the item description can be done by clicking Edit, where you can also change the list's name and whether it's status is Public (included on item pages for extra notice), Semi private (only viewable from your profile), or Private (viewable by member and member only). Make it Public if you think others will find it useful, Semi private if it's useful to you and may be interesting to friends, and Private if you don't think it's something that should be seen by others at all.

Although only simple html can be utilized for lists, it can have a great effect on the appearance of it. All the html for forum posting is available. wtf's list, Beginner's Guide to Reggae, is an example I noticed a couple weeks back that gives a good picture of what Listal's lists can be.

Three Castlevania games have been exclusive to computers (Vampire Killer, Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo, and Akumajo Dracula X68000) and one, Haunted Castle, to arcade. Ten games (including the mobile phone Castlevania: Order of Shadows) have been handheld. What qualifies a game series as multi-platform or console?
Alright, what should I do next?

If I were you, or anyone else needing a break from the monotony of singular-style lists in repetition (as in game series lists), I'd experiment with the list system's potential by seeing what interesting things you can do with it. Mess around in the lab.
