Great story, passable gameplay, poor combat

Underage lesbian children. Good, now that I’ve gotten the attention of every pervert on the internet, let’s continue. Before I really start this review I just wanted to touch on why this game was banned in a few European countries. The main argument was that it contained lesbianism in very young girls. It does. BUT, they also claim that the game is very sexual in nature. It’s not. Aside from... read more

While this game has a very engaging story, particularly for the survival horror nut out there, it also has the clumsiest and most backhanded combat system I have seen.
While the game draws you in with wonderful cutscenes and a twisted sense of reality, it will spit you right back out with the difficulty level of most enemies compared to the fragility of your main character. With little for... read more

Description: Rule Of Rose takes you into the past for incredible and strange gaming action. It is March, 1930 when young Jennifer's parents are killed in a tragic airship accident. She is sent to Rose Garden Orphanage, in a remote portion of the English countryside. In this dilapidated building, a ragtag mob of children who call themselves the &qu ... (more)

The Most Controversial Video Games Of All Time (105 games items)

"The mayor of Rome called for the game to be banned from Italy, saying children "have the right to be shielded from violence". The then European Union justice and security commissioner wrote an open letter condemning the game for "obscene cruelty and brutality". An Italian magazine, Panorama, claimed that in order to win the game players must bury a girl alive, which the game's European publisher disputed. On the UK release day, the publisher announced that Rule of Rose would not be published "

Horror Games - ranked by preference (40 games items)

"Release Date: January 19, 2006 (JP) Publisher: Atlus Developer: Punchline Genre: Adventure - Horror Rule of Rose is very flawed in the gameplay department...Mostly in the way of combat. The combat is clunky and unresponsive. One could argue that since Jennifer, the main character, is a timid young girl that probably fights similar to how the game controls, the unresponsive combat is acceptable. If that was the case, I get it, but the unresponsiveness of controls in combat make it feel more like"

"Release Date: January 19, 2006 (JP) Publisher: Atlus Developer: Punchline Genre: Adventure - Horror This is kind of a shocker to me...I never realized until putting this list together that Punchline developed two of my favorite "not great but I love 'em anyway" games in Rule of Rose and Chulip. Anyway, Rule of Rose is very flawed in the gameplay department...Mostly in the way of combat. The combat is clunky and unresponsive. One could argue that since Jennifer, the main character, is a timid yo"

Game Characters I Like (10 games items)

"Jennifer. She is the protagonist and victim of Wendy's jealous tirade that set the whole thing in motion. Her journey through her own past to recover lost memories was fascinating. Out of all the games I've played this game has the best story I've ever encountered. "

Favorite Box Art (29 games items)

" The thing I like about Rule of Rose is how disturbing it is. The game contains children doing some pretty ghastly things...So it's appropriate to have box art for the game that looks like something a demented child would create. The only thing that might make me enjoy this more is if the visuals on the cover has a crayon texture to them. But, minor griping on my end. I still enjoy the cover as it is."

Games That Deserve More Attention (14 games items)

" The combat sucks. The gameplay itself is average. So, why is it on this list? The story. People should play this game if only for the story, which I honestly feel is one of the best I've ever experienced in a video game. The story is enough of a reason for me to have played through the average gameplay and awful combat sequences on more than on occasion. I think if more folks played it, there'd be many others following their lead."

BUT, they also claim that the game is very sexual in nature. It’s not. Aside from the two girls rubbing their noses together in the intro movie, their expressed love for one another never really goes beyond one telling the other that they love them. So, unless you’re offended by homosexual stuff in general, there’s really nothing here to offend anyone. The supposed strong sexuality between two young lesbian girls never happens. So, basically, the folks who got up in arms a” read more
