Immensely popular in the United States from its original release to the present day, Pac-Man is universally considered as one of the classics of the medium, virtually synonymous with video games, and an icon of 1980s popular culture. Upon its release, the game became a social phenomenon that sold a bevy of merchandise and also inspired an animated television series and a Top 40 pop single.
When Pac-Man was released, most arcade video games in North America were primarily space shooters such as Space Invaders, Defender, or Asteroids. The most visible minority were sports games that were mostly derivative of Pong. Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre and appealing to both males and females. Pac-Man is often credited with being a landmark in video game history, and is among the most famous arcade games of all time.... (more)(less)

A study would have to be done to confirm this, but I'd be willing to bet a decent sum of money that despite other game characters surpassing Namco's yellow mascot over time, that Pac-Man is still the most recognizable character in video games. Heck, back in the day, even the ghosts (Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde) were household names. But anyway, Pac-Man is one of those rare titles that if you have a young kid play it,"

Pac-Man himself may be an ultimately unknowable yellow disc, but his spectral pursuers had proper googly eyes and everything. And nicknames. And blood types. OK, not blood types. But this was one of the first games with identifiable characters, which goes a long way to explaining its success.

"Pac-Man
Simple but I mean c'mon. A brave warrior fighting ghosts without any weapons. Then coming across magical powers that weaken them and courageously moving on without knowing what's ahead. A true hero indeed! ;D

If the ghosts really wanted Pac-Man dead, why wouldn't they just put rat poison in place of some of those pellets? If ghosts aren't tangible creatures, how is Pac-Man eating them? If Pac-Pig eats everything in sight, is there really a need for him to eat diet foods like fruit? The only thing about this game that isn't questionable is how fun it was when it released. The yellow porker has aged well, too.

"Pac-Man (1980) was the first game to achieve widespread popularity in mainstream culture and the first game character to be popular in his own right."
