Nintendo R&D1's 1986 Alien-inspired Metroid is every bit worthy of the developer's name, and quickly became an apex that it would aim to meet with later games. Following 1985's Super Mario Bros., which set a new standard with its fine platforming, and earlier 1986's The Legend of Zelda, which pioneered non-linear progression and has the main character grow by way of collecting power-ups, Metroid c... read more

Metroid on the NES was one of the first games to give off real challenge like the Legend of Zelda. There was nothing wrong with this game. There are 3 stages to the game: Brinstar, Norfair and Tourian. There are 3 bosses in the game: Kraid, Ridley and Mother Brain. There are 5 possible endings to Metroid, all featuring Samus in various stages of un-dress: The slowest time featured an ending were S... read more

Description: Metroid provided one of the first highly nonlinear game experiences on a home console. The basic gameplay is a mix of action adventure and platform shooter. The player begins with a very limited amount of power-ups, and must always use their ingenuity to achieve the next "locked" or unreachable area. Because the game world i ... (more)

"First game I played in the series: Picture of My profile I know some people are going to question my logic on this one, but personally I've always been happy that Metroid II was my first experience with the Metroid franchise. Why? Well, if it wasn't I would probably dismiss it as "one of the worst games in the franchise" as easily as others do when it comes to talking turkey about Metroid. I'm sure some of my love for Metroid II is based purely out of nostalgia yet at the same time I think ther"

Video Game Music: Lessons We Can Learn (35 games items)

" Track Title: Mini Boss Room (I) ~ Kraid Composer: Hirokazu "Hip" Tanaka Lesson: When you need a good idea, take a page from some classical music. This is kind of a hard one to explain as the story behind it was all based on coincidence... but I think it's kind of interesting how the chips fell. Anyway, when I was in the seventh grade I met my old friend Steve who had a copy of the original Metroid. Prior to this point I had only played the following two game in the series: Metroid II and Supe"

" Picture of My profile Samus Aran This is kind of a special entry for me because out of all of Nintendo's properties Metroid easily ranks as my top favorite. However, I'm sure some of those reading will probably dislike the reasoning behind it. While I don't mean anything towards characters like Mario or Kirby by saying this, I just find the sobering sense of seriousness and maturity Metroid titles present to be more interesting. As a series Metroid and its main character just beautifully disp"

Number One Games - By Genre (12 games items)

" #1: Metroid - 1986 NES This category was a tough one to decide. There are so many classic and great games and series, even among honorable mentions, it was tough to choose. Ultimately, I opted with the first Metroid, the game that launched a series and one that I played so often and so many times, even after beating it repeatedly. Among early NES games, this is one of the titans, and one in which they have yet to improve on. A few other titles in the series came close to being included here, "

"No.039 / Added: 08.01.09 / Status: Played Samus’ first adventure on the Nintendo Entertainment System faces an ever-perplexing dilemma. While I don’t think anyone can deny the importance of Metroid in video game history many claim the original game has been so surpassed by its predecessors that it’s no longer a must have/play title. There may be a kernel of truth in such ramblings but to say it should be passed over is extremely shortsighted."

Favorite Games - A Year by Year Review (120 games items)

" Who doesn't remember this game? There were a number of notables this year, but this has to be the top of the list. One thing that always frustrated me on this game was the picture they had showing Samus at the end game with the wave beam. Is it possible to beat the game without the ice beam? If so, I'm just not that good, and I have to wonder who is. I could never make it to the end of the game without freezing those metroids. A true class here, though, and one worth playing if you enjoy the m"

Following 1985's Super Mario Bros., which set a new standard with its fine platforming, and earlier 1986's The Legend of Zelda, which pioneered non-linear progression and has the main character grow by way of collecting power-ups, Metroid combined elements of both. The result is an open world sidescroller - it was one of the very first and, despite its flaws, is certainly the most influential.

The Galactic Federation has sent bounty hunter Samus Aran to take care of the primary problem of the future: Space Pirates. Led by Ridley and his superior Mother Brain, this criminal organization is in possession of the deadly, paras” read more
