Mega Man is one of the very few stars of the 8-bit generation to still be an active character in the ol’ video game community, with the newest Mega Man title, Mega Man 9 being released on all three current consoles; Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. With a few spin-off series added in, Mega Man has been on nearly every console and hand-held system since his NES debut. There’s a reason that Meg... read more
The original. It's needless to say that every video game series has to start somewhere. For Mega Man, the beginning was in December of 1987 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. As easy as it is for one to slap down a date and call it a starting point, when did Mega Man become a household name, when did it really take off? Look no further than Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3.

At the forefront of this technology is Dr. Light and his assistant Dr. Wily. Commissioned to build six robots to handle a variety of specific tasks. They are named Bombman, Gutsman, Iceman, Cutman, Elecman and Fireman in reference to their individual prime functions. Dr. Wily however has bigger plans and chooses to take control of the robots and let loose destruction in a bid for world control. Dr. Light fights back with the best tool he has, an experimental near-human robot, Rock aka Megaman, who had been currently under testing performing cleaning duties. Now armed properly, it's up to Megaman to take on the maverick robots, fight his way into Dr. Wily's castle and end this madness.
Mega Man is a side-scroller platform. Megaman's has the ability to jump and fire his weapon. He must travel to the levels of the six robot masters and defeat them in combat. By doing so, Megaman is able to acquire their power for his own. These powers can then be used interchangeably with his main weapon and target the weaknesses of specific enemy bosses. Additionally, some hidden areas of the levels can only be accessible by using certain of these captured robot weapons. A special Magnet Beam ability can also be found which can be used to create steps.
Travelling throughout these levels, Megaman will be confronted by an army of lesser robot creations. Destroying these will usually yield energy capsules (for refilling Megaman's Energy), weapon capsules (for refilling Megaman's special robot weapons) and extra lives shaped like Megaman's head.... Explaining my stance on the original Mega Man is a bit tricky. Of course it's an important title - I mean you got to start somewhere - but beyond the main fact it's the franchise's first brick the game generally isn't too memorable (its lasting appeal is mostly summed up with its robot masters and music) and the experience is complicated with several roadblocks like unforgiv"

Within a few minutes of playing the original Mega Man, defeating Bomb Man, and realizing that I had just obtained the powers of the boss I had just beaten, I fell head over heels for the game. Mega Man's formula is just plain great - wonderfully designed, fun-to-navigate-through levels with an enjoyable boss fight waiting to greet you at the end. Later games in the series surpassed this game, but the orig"

"Why they seemingly never resolve and conclude the Mega Man Classic storyline?
Because, judging from Mega Man X's story, (most of) the original cast will die at some point (but not because Zero killed them; that theory is Jossed). Having them die is a horrific thing, especially considering the cheerful tone of the series (and this is somewhat supported by the Word Of God). So the writers try to avoid that point as much as they can, preventing any (obvious) relation between the Classic and X serie"

"As important as the original Mega Man is in laying the groundwork for all the following games and spin-offs, it is probably one of the least inviting games in the entire series. As simple of a diagnosis as that may seem, you can’t really underestimate how damming that is when the series is known for it’s pick up and play architecture. Because of this I only recommend it to the most loyal of fans.""

Why am talking about the immediate sequels when it's the original that's on the table here? When dissecting a game, it's good to start with a dose of reality. Most people (Capcom included) would probably have a hard time saying that the original Mega Man was a complete success. In fact, the creation of the superior Mega Man 2 was considered a "rogue effort" by the developers involved, a project that was far from b” read more
