From the company who gave us the tremendous Grand Theft Auto series comes a game that surpasses it in terms of violence, gore and controversy. The game takes the form of one long snuff film, set in some horrendous lawless city where a convicted criminal is spared from death row only to find himself having to murder his way to survival.
As you progress through the game you pick up a... read more
Description:Manhunt casts you as James Earl Cash, a prisoner on death row. You are led down a corridor where you are about to receive a lethal injection. The needle goes in. You wake up hours later. A mysterious voice tells you to stick in the nearby earpiece, and explains that the "lethal" injection was just a heavy sedative. The man, Manhunt casts you as James Earl Cash, a prisoner on death row. You are led down a corridor where you are about to receive a lethal injection. The needle goes in. You wake up hours later. A mysterious voice tells you to stick in the nearby earpiece, and explains that the "lethal" injection was just a heavy sedative. The man, later identified as Starkweather, turns out to be a director of snuff movies, where the people are really killed. He explains that if you follow his directions, manage to kill people and survive, you'll earn your freedom. This begins James Earl Cash's journey.
Throughout the course of the game, you'll have to make your way through different locales, such as a city and a mall, while killing gangs. You'll face lots of different gangs, from The Hoods and The Skins to tougher gangs like The Innocenz. Gang members carry weapons ranging from pistols and shotguns to knives and glass shards.
Manhunt is primarily a stealth game. You'll have to hide behind walls, flatten yourself against walls, crouch, hide behind objects, and walk to avoid attracting attention. You can also throw glass bottles to create a distraction, or you can punch surfaces and yell to get gangs to come to you.
You have a variety of weapons at your disposal, from the traditional, such as the shotgun and uzi, to the disgusting, such as a sickle and plastic bag. Each weapon has three different ways of attacking, depending on how long you hold the button. A quick attack will do the job, a medium attack will be bloody, but a high attack, requiring the longest amount of time, will earn you the most points, and will allow you to see your kill in a cinematic style, with blood splatting on the camera, and gurgling noises.
Nearly one month after Manhunt's November 2003 release and in the heat of the anti-Haitian claims against Vice City, New Zealand, notably the host country for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy (as well as Jackson's briefly brutal but excellent Heavenly Creatures film) banned the game. The OFLC blocked the Rockstar game from entry into the country for any age group, calling Manhunt "gruesome." GameSpot reported that the OFLC's chief censor, Bill Hastings, said, "It's a game where the only thing you do is kill everybody you see. You have to at least acquiesce in these murders and possibly tolerate, or even move toward, enjoying them, which is injurious to the public good." A 12-page report describing Manhunt's violent offences was filed by the OFLC.... (more)(less)

"Rockstar make this list for the third and final time with the dark, sordid and depressing Manhunt. Playing as a death row convict, the game sees you entrapped in a city overrun by convicts and murderous gangs inspired by those in the film The Warriors. Escaping requires sticking to the shadows and executing your enemies as gruesomely as possible.
Killing involved gruesome improvisational weapons like shards of broken glass and plastic bags, as well as tools like crowbars and sledgehammers. When"

Piggsy
My friends and I took turns playing through Manhunt the first time I played it...And Piggsy just plain freaked me out. He's a big guy with a chainsaw...And I thought for sure that he'd attack from nowhere and it'd be game over. After teasing his appearance for much of the game, Piggsy finally appears as a boss near the end. Using shards of broken glass to take him down, I eventually put an end to the pantless, chainsaw-weilding madman. And yes, he was pantless...And yes, you could see"
