Kingdom Hearts

The Door to the Light

Posted : 1 year, 4 months ago on 22 January 2012 12:05

The idea of Kingdom Hearts started in 2000 when the producer Shinji Hashimoto met an Disney executive in an elevator in the building both Square and Disney work at in Japan. Original this was going to be lighter and simple to get the Disney feel, but they decide to aim in the same level of the Final Fantasy series instead. After two years of development of choosing the right Disney worlds and getting the story set, Kingdom Hearts finally awake.

The story is about an group of three Sora, Riku, and Kairi who are building an raft to leave Destiny Islands to find new places away from the Island. While this happens at Disney’s Castle. Donald notice that the King is gone and after reading an note left from him. Donald and Goofy go on the gummi ship to find the keyblade an key like sword and the King. At nighttime, the island is attacked by the creatures. Sora go and found Riku being sucked in willingly by the darkness almost taking Sora as well but an light appears and the keyblade appears. After taking some of the creatures down, Kairi disappears and the islands get destroyed. Sora wakes up at an unknown town called Traverse Town when he starts looking for his friends while meeting Final Fantasy characters, Disney characters and getting himself involved into something huge.

The gameplay is where you can walk, run, swim, and jump in the worlds. Theirs an action menu where you can do commands depending on if you’re in battle or not like you can attack, talk, magic, combos, and summon Disney characters to aid you in battle. Their are also shortcuts that allows you to use magic you chose for quicker use. Some of the worlds you transform to fit in the setting of the world like Sora being an merman in Atlantica. To travel to other worlds you go on the gummi ship to shoot enemy ships to survive. You can also customize your ship to make it fare better for the later dangerous travels.

Personally I enjoy the concept of Final Fantasy/Disney and I enjoy the story that grabs your attention from the start. The combat is addicting fun to get into exspeciality in some of the battles in the game. The music by Yoko Shimomura is amazing and the themes for the Disney world really nailed the setting of it. She really made an very memorable soundtrack. The designs to recreate the Disney worlds are good. They did an really good job in making it really like the movies people grew up with.

The things I didn’t like as much is the camera. It can get in the way when you go around in the worlds and make some commands abit odd. Like Final Fantasy X the cut scenes are unskipable and can be annoying when you replay the game after beating it or you die at an boss and have to see it again. Some may not mind but I find the gummi ship section of this game boring and not interesting.

Overall this may not be everyone type of game. Honestly it’s an very enjoyable game with interesting ideas, addicting battle system, and great music. I highly recommend giving this an try.

Not Square Enix's greatest RPG, but it's good.

Ah, good ol' Square Enix. Creator of the most well-known RPG series of all time, Final Fantasy, and some other great but obscure titles such as Act Raiser and Super Mario RPG. Kingdom Hearts, made by Disney Interactive and Square Enix, is not as popular as Final Fantasy but it isn't just known by the Square Enix worshipers. This game has some great tunes, an acceptable storyline, and interesting battles.

Sadly, although this is a Square Enix game, this game's storyline only goes as far as acceptable. The game's story would actually be awesome if the story didn't sound like a twisted DeviantART fanfiction. I'm actually hooked into the story at times, but those times aren't when Donald and Goofy(or any Disney character for that matter) aren't derping around with Sora. Other than this, the story was pretty dark although the Disney characters are in it. It's a really creative take on the Disney world, so I appreciate this game's dark storyline. So you see, I would like the story more if it wasn't made for a fanfiction website.

Getting more on the positive side of the game, the battles are quite interesting if the partner AI or the camera angles get in the way. First thing about the battles is that the battles aren't played solo; Donald Duck and Goofy, along with other characters, come to assist you in your fights. If they don't get in the way, then the battles are all-out action and exciting. The controls worked perfectly in the battles, too. The camera was sort of a minor issue in the battles, though.

The cast of characters were, yes, mostly Disney icons, but there were also original characters such as the game's main protagonist and even Cloud and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII make cameo appearances. The Disney cast was both lovable and memorable, mainly because the cast of characters is mostly older Disney icons such as Ariel and Winnie the Pooh. Sora, the game's protagonist, on the other hand, looks goofy. Seriously, why does he wear oversized shoes anyway?

You'll spend plenty of this game trying to get 100% completion on this game. This game is not too short, but not too long, either, and you can complete a 101 dalmatian scavenger hunting sidequest. The game wasn't very easy, but it wasn't completely impossible, either.

Overall, this isn't Square Enix's best work, but it is a fantastic RPG anyway.

The first time I played it, the very first time, I was bewitched by it. the game play was fanominal, it story was superb, the weapons choise was excellent, the charaters where unique, witty, and lovable all at the same time. Hardly any other company could have taken disney and made it such a dark game with out turning it gothic. The characters from final fantasy where easily unmatched to any other games view of them (accept for the games them selves). SEphiroth in paticular was my favorite ff charater in there. such a challenge, one of the hardest bosses of all time, by far the funest too. All in all, accept for sora's amazing shoe size (looks like eighteens or so) it was one of the best games i've ever beaten.

Loved this game the gameplay was fa nominal. Combat and exploration in this game is presented from behind the lead character Sora's back at default, from a relatively low angle for some reason. However, it doesn't stay there for long. To keep attacks focused on the appropriate enemy, Kingdom Hearts uses a target-focused lock-on, a la Ocarina of Time. When locked on, whether to a specific target or a rotating set of semi-automatic targets (there's a soft lock-on that fixes Sora's attention on the nearest enemy). the camera keeps its focus towards that spot regardless of where Sora is facing. Thus he can circle around it and attack from different angles while still keeping an eye on what's what. This, as I say, works in principle. A few things intrude in practice, however. For one, this is a team-based game, not a solo adventure Sora is continually backed up by his allies Donald Duck and Goofy, as well as a rotating cast of other supporting movie/show characters. For another, the camera can be stymied by the presence of walls and other obstacles, since there are no routines to remove those from view or turn them semi-transparent when they may block the camera. And for a third, some of these battlefields are more packed with enemies than you'd ever imagine, with crowds of smaller opponents and giant bosses that fill several screens.

First off, I'll start with the first blatant fact; Kingdom Hearts is for children, and makes a weak game for the "advanced" gamer, right? WRONG! This game is totally under-rated by some gamers who claim to be "hard-core", even those who haven't even played the game. Why? Some say it's "Too unreal", others say because of its "dreadful plot" or "it's just too easy". Well, it may be "unreal" slightly, but have we forgotten what fun actually is? It's not how far you've got doing something or bragging your progress - FUN is your own personal entertainment, and believe me when I say that I have had lots of fun playing this.

Another interesting thing worth noting is the Journal. This Journal records all major information of your quest, with pictures and back-tracking information which help should you forget where you're up to in the plot. Another quick thing I have to mention is the graphics. During movie scenes, they are simply great and are so too during gameplay. Tropical places are lush and colourful, whilst the latter dark places give a great atmosphere.
