A good game, for free

For what was basically a free game, I enjoyed HL2 Deathmatch for a good while. Very quick gameplay and few team aspects made it slightly short-lived for a multiplayer game, but its worth a play, especially as it just appears on steam for nothing. It has also opened up multiplayer modding capabilities, which has perhaps been its largest effect.
