Using an enhanced version of the graphics engine that was employed in its predecessors, GEX 3: Deep Cover Gecko is the third outing for its obnoxious, wisecracking lizard lead character.
This time around Gex has to rescue Agent Xtra (played by Baywatch babe Marliece Andrado) from the clutches of his arch-nemesis Rez. You will wander through scenes such as a twisted North Pole and the Wild West, scooping up fly tokens (50 will net you an extra life), bonus coins (to access bonus stages), and, of course, the remote controls you need to progress through to other television dimensions.
Some tweaking has been done since Gex's last excursion, to give the player more control over the cameras. While still not perfect, the camera has been fixed to a point where you will no longer get seasick as it tries to nestle into the best viewpoint. Although, the graphics aren't as solid and impressive as, say, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, they are still pretty impressive for the PlayStation.
The sound fits in well with the atmosphere. In snow levels you'll hear Christmas music, in the mystery level, you'll hear a parody of the Inspector Gadget theme, and so on. However, if you spend a lot of time trying to find everything in the level, then the comedian doing Gex's voice does become gratingly repetitive.
The GEX 3: Deep Cover Gecko falls a little short in terms of gameplay. Although level design is decent, if very derivative of "Super Mario 64", the tasks you have to perform are too time consuming, and the tail whipping and karate kicking gets highly repetitive.
So although it's not giving too much more than we have already had from the adventurous gecko, it seems to be a case of "if it's not broke, don't fix it", as this is still a very solid 3-D platformer. ---Faisal Ahmed

Scientists have successfully cloned frogs and sheep but Crave Entertainment has successfully cloned Austin Powers' personality into a colourful little gecko named Gex. First introduced in Gex: Enter the Gecko, the sophisticated lizard is back in a new adventure in which he must rescue his partner, X-Tra (Baywatch's own Marliece Andrada), from his archenemy Raz. To save his partner, Gex must complete specific missions in cheesy television worlds in order to acquire remote controls, which allow him to transport to the next television world until he meets Raz in a final showdown. Dispersed throughout the main plot are minigames to keep you on your toes, and, of course, there is Dana Gould with his witty one-liners.
Although the graphics are fairly good, there is a little jerkiness and at times depth perception is a bit tricky, making some manoeuvres extremely difficult to judge. This aside, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko is a good game, designed for the younger crowd but also fun for adults. ---Hugh Arnold
Pros:
Solid, straightforward plot
Fun minigames
Easy learning curve
Cons:
Graphics need some work
Witty one-liners can get tiresome... (more)(less)
