Most Final Fantasy games have the same formula, but Mystic Quest mixed it up a little; it was a pretty gutsy move for 1992 and a company that didn't have many games out yet.

The game was released as a spin-off to Square's popular Final Fantasy series of video games. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was first released in North America in 1992 and marketed as a "simplified role-playing game...designed for the entry-level player" in an attempt to broaden the genre's appeal. The game's presentation and battle system is broadly similar to that of the main series, but it differed in its inclusion of action-adventure game elements.
In the game, the player controls a youth named Benjamin (name given in the US manual) in his quest to save the world. His goal is to reclaim a set of stolen crystals that determine the state of the world's four elemental powers.
The gameplay takes a departure from the main series in a variety of ways. Many series staples are eliminated, such as random battles, save points, manual equipment, and the party system. ""Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is a game that is often judged for what it is not. It’s true that an entry-level role-playing game may not have been what the genre needed at the time (at least outside of Japan that is) but when one looks beyond such a failed ambition it’s still a well-crafted product that can be enjoyable to anyone willing to give it a break and not expecting a full-fledged Final Fantasy.""
"This was the very first Final Fantasy game I ever played, and one of my favorites in the series, perhaps in part because it was my first. The series has taken a decidedly sci-fi turn, especially in later installments, but this one still stands mostly in the fantasy realm. For this system and time, it's amazing, with good character progression and an interesting assortment of skills and weapons, including magic of course. Not something I play all the time any more, but definitely worth giving it "
"Released specifically for the US market, this entry was designed to appeal to entry-level RPG gamers and to try and broaden the franchise's appeal. But because many features were stripped from the gameplay, it was not a well received addition to the franchise.

You are able to real-time weapon change, which means that you can switch between all of your weapons by pressing L or R, and use them to affect the surrounding environment (chop down trees, blow up rocks, etc.). Your armor is accumulated as a whole and automatically equipped. Every direction you can go is displayed on the world map, meaning you don't spend all that time mucking about trying to find your way to your next destination. It is also an over-the-shoulder type of battle, so you won't be on th” read more
