The real birth of the FPS

If Wolfenstein 3D is the equivalent of giving birth to the First Person Shooter genre, then DOOM is when the doc takes the baby, smacks its bottom, and makes it cry out to make sure its alive and well.

I grew up during the golden age of DOS gaming, and I remember both titles fondly, but back then, Wolf 3D felt just like a fun action game. It didn't give off an 'OMG! THIS IS THE FUT... read more

You're a space marine. There are demons. Find the key card to open the door. Find the exit. Also, Kill anything that moves. It helps that the game has a rockin' soundtrack that keeps pace with the fast paced frantic shooting.

Description: Not so long after Wolfenstein 3D changed the world, ID Software made another game of that kind. Viewed from your perspective and in real time, it's just you and a weapon against the world. This time, you won't just have a pistol, knife and a couple of machine guns, but much more powerful weapons like a rocket launcher, shotgun, and ... (more)

AW's Favorite Video Game Series (14 games items)

"First game I played in the series: Picture of My profile While I didn't exactly play it back when it debuted, by the time I got a good enough computer to run Doom I was absolutely hook, line and sinker. I'm not even a fan of the first person shooter genre but there was something about Doom (perhaps its amazing sense of design?) that just carried it, even if you played it way after it's prime. Games like those aren't really a dime a dozen but despite the fact I absolutely LOVE it as a game, I ha"

I just can't stop beating it. (26 games items)

"I've tore through this game more times than I can count. I suppose part of it is just pure nostalgia, as I can freely admit that the "puzzle" (and I DO use that term LOOSELY) mechanics have NOT aged well. Entirely too much back-tracking and pointless running around. Still, the rest of the game I still enjoy. I still remember the shitstorm this game ignited when it was released. In retrospect, this game actually seems kind of tame and even quaint. Funny how times change."

AW's Favorite Game Characters (44 games items)

" Picture of My profile The Stranded Marine a.k.a. "the Doomguy" It simply bewilders me how such a simple and silent character as the Doomguy can invoke intense feelings of being in the deepest of trenches against the beings of hell. As most gamers know Doom and it's sequels didn't have much of a story (which is why I give the movie adaptation everyone but myself seems to hate so much leeway) but these games didn't need much story. Why? Because you were the Doomguy! It was either kill or be kil"

The Most Controversial Video Games Of All Time (105 games items)

"While Doom will forever be known as the game which popularized the first person shooter, it was just as groundbreaking for its gore. For many it remains one of the earliest instances of being both impressed and sickened by such a high level of violence in a video game. I must have been about 8 years old when I first saw Doom in action – the hellish world and its bloody and gruesome visuals were a tad different from Sonic The Hedgehog. It was this visceral violence which made the game an immed"

Favorite Games - A Year by Year Review (120 games items)

"One of the earliest first-person shooters available, this game rocked back in its day, and is still quite a blaster. Of the early first-person shooter, the two most mentioned are Doom and Wolfenstein. Both are great games. The atmosphere on this one is dark and bizarre, as you're fighting aliens on this one, though perhaps not quite as sinister as Wolfenstein, in which you are fighting the Nazis. Even with somewhat dated graphics, this is a blast and well worth a play through. "

50 Best Video-Games I've Played - ranked! (50 games items)

" Platform - PC DOOM! This is a game that is found in every damn list out there. Not mentioning it would be like not mentioning Stairway to Heaven in The Top 10 Best Led Zeppelin Songs... that would be insane! This is the game that separates the boys from men. The weak from the strong. Whether you've played it or not, there's no chance you haven't heard of it and if you haven't, please state the co-ordinates of the rock you've been living in (you may find a SWAT team near you very soon)... GruntLogic's Top 100 Favorite Video Games (100 games items)

"You're a space marine. There are demons. Find the key card to open the door. Find the exit. Also, Kill anything that moves. It helps that the game has a bitchin' soundtrack that keeps pace with the fast paced frantic shooting. Having recently read The Masters of DOOM by David Kushner, I now have a greater appreciation for the genius of John Carmack and John Romero, the creators of DOOM. This is a game that exploded onto the gaming scene and really established First-Person Shooters as their o"

30 Days of Video Games List (30 games items)

"Day 8 - Best Soundtrack: DOOM Sure, it's simple 8-bit Midi music, but Goddamn, does it get the job done. I loved every second of the score for this game. The different music for the different levels is great. From the kickin' opening track for Episode 1: Mission 1 to the disturbing songs for the more disturbing levels later on, it pulled me into the hellish nightmare."
