There is no such thing as a perfect game. Bastion, however, comes damn close. Bastion is a marriage of pure old school game play with modern storytelling innovations. Most of the hype for the game revolves around the latter. There has been much said about it's gorgeous visuals, beautiful soundtrack and adaptive narrator who narrates your every action with a raspy, soulful voice. What hasn't been p... read more

pretty arcade/action rpg with great voice acting and two endings to choose from. It´s fun and it´s cute and is brutal and has an original way of treating an old school genre

There were three things that I really liked about this game - the unique art, the narrator's voice, and the outlandish music. The story is definitely what kept me inclined to play, for some reason I wasn't getting into the gameplay mechanics, polished as they were. The combat was consistently peppered with new weapons to keep things from getting old and you were rarely severely punished for lett... read more

The Top 10 2011 Games I Enjoyed Playing (19 games items)

" From an independent game stand point, Bastion seems like the most ambitious and highly funded indie game I've seen. The art design is gorgeous, the soundtrack is amazing, one of the best I've heard in gaming and its narrative is somewhat quite relaxing, all thanks to the baritone narrator throughout the game. The gameplay can be hit and miss at points as the isometric view can hinder where or when you attack and move, especially in combat."

Gaming Journal (34 games items)

" Bastion is a pretty fun and sometimes funny hack and slash RPG. Bastion was designed and written by my favorite gaming critic. I was expecting this game would make me cry because it was suggested to me by Reddit, but I'm not going to add it to my list of games that made me cry, because although the choices were poignant and thought-provoking, and the story's great, Bastion didn't make me cry.

My Indie Game Experiences (21 games items)

" I bet I'm not the only one who wishes that a super awesome voice e.g. Morgan Freeman or John Hurt would narrate their life. Bastion pretty much comes close to that. A narrator that constantly comments on the little things you'd do might sound annoying but if the voice sounded like a butch version of Clint Eastwood's, it certainly makes up for it. The game's strongest aspect is obviously the narrative style, thanks to the narrator's calm but charismatic delivery. While I have this game on PC, I"

Zero Punctuation (29 games items)

" a superlative example of how to mix gameplay and storytelling, combining intense isometric combat with a voice narration that will send rivulets of something shameful running down your thighs."

"Rucks Along with the fact that he has a super suave voice that rivals Morgan Freeman's, Rucks is always there to insightfully tell the story all the while being someone who is always there waiting for your safe return."

“There were three things that I really liked about this game - the unique art, the narrator's voice, and the outlandish music. The story is definitely what kept me inclined to play, for some reason I wasn't getting into the gameplay mechanics, polished as they were. The combat was consistently peppered with new weapons to keep things from getting old and you were rarely severely punished for letting your health drop to 0, or tumbling off ledges - which I did a lot of.

The ending is what made the game for me, but I'll leave it at that.” read more

Most of the hype for the game revolves around the latter. There has been much said about it's gorgeous visuals, beautiful soundtrack and adaptive narrator who narrates your every action with a raspy, soulful voice. What hasn't been properly addressed, however, is the gameplay.

Bastion is a hardcore action RPG with hack and slash gameplay (that is surprisingly heavy on ranged combat mind you) dressed up with RPG customization. You may choose from eleven different weapons and over thirty unique special skills, as well as a variety of passive boons acquired while leveling up. The game also has a light hint of Actraiser” read more
